#AceFriendsNews – Featured Writers Post – Nov.14 – My friend Anne’s superb post of Monet.
Claude Monet would be 174 years old today. He was born in Paris, France and is, today, one of the world’s most famous and popular artists. His style and work lead to the name of an art movement, “Impressionism.” Themes in his prolific body of work were capturing , light, reflection and natural form. This lead an art critic of his day to insult him with the name “Impressionist” . The name stuck and an art movement born.
Monet, like many artists during their lives, struggled with depression, poverty and illness. For the last 40 years of his life, he lived and painted at his beloved farmhouse in Giverny, France. Below you see a model of the house, a quick shot of an incredible Gift Shop, and the heavenly gardens that you have visited in art galleries or museums.
Let me tell you a personal story. We were driving from Paris to visit the holy ground of Normandy. As some of you may remember, my oldest brother was a paratrooper who jumped the night before D-Day, the invasion, and later died of non-life threatening injuries. I wanted so much to visit Giverny and of course it was not a priority of the architect. But what a grand surprise when he detoured and we arrived for a half day visit. It is a very popular day trip from Paris and there were a number of buses, too many for the parking lot, with many were just parked along the small road.
I won’t try to describe the garden as the paintings and video are much clearer , but I did have a couple of memories about the house. From the little pop-up book model, you see the four main rooms. I loved the casement windows that open outwards and let the flowers, sun, and fragrances into the house which is set right in the middle of the garden! I also remember the color yellow which is shown in the model. I think these aspects of the house were to help him fight the never ending depression. Another thing that struck me was that there were none of his paintings on the walls, not a one that I noticed, but there were lots of Japanese paintings of water color and lithographs. Could this artist who is probably the most recognizable in the world today, have suffered with low self-esteem? Amazing. . . . . and yes, for the shoppers. . . . the gift shop is so complete that it will take you at least an hour. Never I have seen so many examples of an artist’s work for sale except at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona where Frank Lloyd Wright lived and worked.

#AceFriendsNews – Featured Site News – Nov.14 – Spreading awareness of the:
My DES Daughter Network blog is the little sister of my “Diethylstibestrol, Journal of a DES Daughter” website blog but with a focus on social media and social networking. This blog features and displays the social media networks of existing DES groups and individuals who have an online social media presence aimed at raising DES awareness. This new blog provides me with an additional platform where I can express myself about DES issues and share my experience of using social media networks to support this cause with others interested in the health and personal problems associated with DES exposure.
Why a new blog?
Around the world, thousands, maybe millions of people are totally unaware that they were exposed to Diethylstilbestrol DES , a toxic and carcinogenic drug. All of these people are not receiving proper medical treatment, or making truly informed decisions about their healthcare, as a result.
How do you reach out to these people? One answer which immediately came to my mind when I started writing my “Journal of aDES Daughter is through the use of social media and social networking.
Nowadays, social media and social networking tools are vital to building a strong online presence. The use of social media is stronger than ever.Facebook, Flickr, Google+, Twitter, YouTube are just some of the popular forms of social media used by millions around the world on a daily basis. Chances are, anyone you speak to today has at least one, if not more of these accounts.
To me, social media is simply the easiest, fastest and cheapest, yet effective way to raise DES awareness.
The 4 “C’s of Social Media for the DES cause
Connect, Contribute, Collaborate, Change
Connect: DES, like social media, is about people. People affected by this drug disaster often feel lonely and would benefit from connecting with other DES victims.
Contribute: DES information needs to be instantly available to the public to generate an instant reaction and increase awareness.
Collaborate: DES is a worldwide tragedy. DES information, studies and data need to be shared to better understand the full extent of the health issues associated with DES exposure. Social media increases potential for collaboration.
Change: The DES story needs to be told not just through studies, statistics, numbers and figures but through real life experiences. The collective voice of DES victims on social media platforms can bring about change. Lessons must be learned so that history doesn’t repeat itself.
Despite the number of people affected by the DES tragedy and the hard work of DES support groups and activists, the DES cause is going unnoticed, or not noticed enough among the general public. The use of social media can change this. In today’s fast-moving world, we will make a difference and bring about change only if we connect, contribute, and collaborate.

#AceFriendsNews – Nov.10 – In recent years, nearly every police force in the country has examined historic abuse in children’s homes.
Fifty private schools have also been investigated. If organisations responsible for looking after children in the 1970’s and 80’s got it so wrong how can we blame the BBC for failures over Jimmy Savile or the Liberal Party over Cyril Smith?
And what light does it throw on how it was possible for widespread abuse in Rotherham to be ignored over many years?
