‘ One Reporter Faces Anti-Russian Bias in the Ukraine ‘

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE – September 26 – RT correspondent Paula Slier faced strong anti-Russian bias during an OSCE panel on the freedom of journalism. She was invited to speak about her experience as a reporter while covering the situation in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine.

' Paula Silier Faces Ant-Russian Bias While Reporting in the Ukraine '
‘ Paula Slier Faces Ant-Russian Bias While Reporting in the Ukraine ‘

Slier was attending a panel entitled Professional Journalist: How to escape a deadly danger’, where she wanted to share her impressions that journalists nowadays have become targets.

I mentioned that I receive death threats on Facebook and Twitter for my reports on RT, that my colleagues have been – and continue to be – denied entry into Ukraine,” Slier said later to RT.

She added that despite repeated requests, RT “continues to be refused ATO [Anti-terrorist operation] accreditation’ which means that RT crews cannot film in areas controlled by the Ukrainian Army.”

Unfortunately, for the most part delegates were not open to hearing Slier’s point of view, repeatedly claiming that Russian media, particularly RT is a tool of propaganda of the Russian government who is a part” of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

` School and Kindergarten Shelled in Slavyansk ‘

#AceNewsServices – SLAVYANSK – May 28 – A school and a kindergarten have been shelled in Slavyansk as the city becomes increasingly unsafe in the intensified Kiev military campaign. At least 9 civilians were injured in Wednesday’s shelling incidents, including a child.

Slaviansk update

Ukrainian mortar shells have for weeks been raining down on the checkpoints and positions of the Slavyansk self-defense, but much of the shelling occurred outside the city. Italian journalist Andrea Rocchelli and his Russian interpreter, veteran human rights activist Andrey Mironov, were almost torn to pieces in one such shelling.

However, this week the battleground apparently moved right into civilian quarters of Slavyansk, as shells started hitting residential blocks and nearby buildings, killing three people on Monday.

On Wednesday, there was a shocking reminder of how the situation might unfold if the likely president-elect Petro Poroshenko pushes on with the military operation in the region, as shells struck the city’s streets, yards, a school and a kindergarten.

RT talked to a male schoolteacher from Slavyansk school number 13, who asked not to be named.

“Around midday there was a loud explosion in the school, and I fell to the floor, taking cover,” the teacher told RT over the phone.

The man said that he rushed to the corridor to assemble all the teachers and children in the school and take them to a safe place. Clouds of dust were billowing on one side of the building.

According to the teacher, it turned out that the shell exploded right above the school hall, where children are usually gathered for festive events, and part of the roof “was simply blown away.”

Luckily, no children were in the hall at the time.

All the pupils and teachers were quickly evacuated to the basement.

` China’s all ` Seeing Eye’s and ` Satellite Network ‘ can ` Globally Monitor ‘ and they are planning new Ground Stations ‘

#AceWorldNews – BEIJING – April 01 – (RT) – To compensate the frustration over the endless search for missing the Malaysian airliner, Chinese scientists have doubled efforts to promote their project of a huge satellites network, which will enable Beijing to monitor the whole world.

As the mission to find the passenger jet MH370 which disappeared off the radars on March 8 with 239 people on board, 153 of them Chinese, is yet to yield to any substantial result, the space surveillance net project is gaining strong backing from key government officials in Beijing, the South China Morning Post reports.

China currently has satellites in the orbit but they largely focus on its region and surrounding area. The exact number of them is a state secret.

“If we had a global monitoring network today, we would not be searching in the dark. We would have a much greater chance to find the plane and trace it to its final position. The plan is being drafted to expand our regional monitoring capability,” Professor Chi Tianhe, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of remote Sensing and Digital Earth, told the (SCMP) http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1460652/china-mulls-global-satellite-surveillance-after-flight-370-riddle

Professor Zhao Chaofang, an oceanographer at the Ocean University of China in Qingdao, also said that China needs to develop more ground stations, to ease and speed up sending data back to earth.

“Many Chinese satellites can only offload their data when they are flying over China, so the data we receive is sometimes only a fraction of the amount collected by the satellites.

To build up a global monitoring network as efficient as that of the US, our ground stations overseas must be expanded as well,” he said.

TSA : Investment of $1 Billion in ` Behaviour Detection Techniques and Training ‘ shows no Evidence ‘

#AceSecurityNews – After investing $1 billion in behaviour detection techniques and training since 2007, the Transportation Security Administration has little to show for its efforts, the New York Times stated in a new report.

According to the newspaper, critics of the TSA’s attempt to read body language claim there’s no evidence to suggest the agency has been able to link chosen passengers to anything beyond carrying drugs or holding undeclared currency, much less a terrorist attack. In fact, a review of numerous studies seems to suggest that even those trained to look for various tactics are no more capable of identifying liars than normal individuals.

“The common-sense notion that liars betray themselves through body language appears to be little more than a cultural fiction,” Maria Hartwig, a psychologist at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, told the Times in their report – http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/25/science/in-airport-screening-body-language-is-faulted-as-behavior-sleuth.html?

The TSA’s body language program has also been critiqued by the Government Accountability Office, which found it to be ineffective and recommended cutting its funding going forward.

As RT – http://on.rt.com/4v1fsr reported last year, its conclusion was that human ability to read body language was “the same as or slightly better than chance.”

` Ukrainians must take up arms against ` Russians ' so that not even scorched earth will be left – Tymoshenko '

#AceBreakingNews – Ukrainians must take up arms against Russians so that not even scorched earth will be left where Russia stands; an example of former Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko’s vitriol in phone call leaked on-line. She confirmed the authenticity of the conversation on Twitter, while pointing out that a section where she is heard to call for the nuclear slaughter of the eight million Russians who remain on Ukrainian territory.

She tweeted “The conversation took place, but the ‘8 million Russians in Ukraine’ piece is an edit. In fact, I said Russians in Ukraine – are Ukrainians. Hello FSB :) Sorry for the obscene language.”

The former Ukrainian PM has not clarified who exactly she wants to nuke.

Shufrych’s press service flatly contradicted Tymoshenko, slamming the tape as fake. The press release reads “The conversation didn’t take place,” as quoted by korrespondent.net.The phone conversation with Nestor Shufrych, former deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, was uploaded on YouTube on Monday by user Sergiy Vechirko.

The leaked phone call took placed on March 18, hours after the Crimea & Sevastopol accession treaty was signed in the Kremlin.

While Shufrych was “in shock,” Tymoshenko was enraged by the results of the Crimean referendum .

“It’s going too far! Bugger! We must grab arms and go whack those damn katsaps [a Ukrainian word used to refer to the Russians in a negative tone] together with their leader,” Tymoshenko said.

The ex-pm declared if she was in charge “they [Russia] would’ve never gotten Crimea, god dammit.”

Shufrych nade the valid point that Ukraine “didn’t have any force potential” to keep Crimea.

But Tymoshenko, who plans to run in Ukraine’s presidential election, expressed confidence that she would have found “a way to zap those assholes [Russia].”

“I’ll use all my connections, I’ll raise the whole world – as soon as I’m able to – in order to make sure.. Bugger!.. not even scorched earth won’t remain where Russia stands,” she promised.

Despite being incapacitated by spinal disc hernia the ex-PM stressed she’s ready to “grab a machine gun, you know what I’m saying, and go shoot this bastard [Putin] in the forehead.”

Tymoshenko rose to power as a key figure in the pro-European Orange Revolution in 2004, becoming Ukrainian prime minister 2007-2010.

She was imprisoned in 2012, under president Viktor Yanukovich, after being found guilty of exceeding her authority by signing a gas supply and transit deal with Russia.

The deal is claimed to have cost Ukraine’s national oil and gas company, Naftogaz, around US$170 million.

Tymoshenko served part of her seven-year sentence in prison before being relocated to a Kharkov hospital.

She was released immediately after the Kiev coup which ousted Yanukovich.

` Guinea ` Ebola Virus ' has killed at least 59 and According to Reports may now have spread to Sierra Leone '

#AceHealthNews – GUINEA – 23 March – The deadly epidemic, which has killed at least 59 people, in Guinea, West Africa, and could have spread to neighbouring Sierra Leone, has been confirmed to be Ebola, according to government officials.

Following failed attempts by medical experts in Guinea to identify the disease, which started claiming lives six weeks ago, samples of the virus were sent to scientists in the French city of Lyon, who confirmed the virus was Ebola.

“The Ebola fever epidemic raging in southern Guinea, including the prefectures of Gueckedou and Macenta, since February 9 has left at least 59 dead out of 80 cases identified by our services on the ground,” the Guinean health ministry’s chief disease prevention officer, Sakoba Keita, announced on Saturday, according to AFP.

The disease, which has diarrhoea, vomiting and bleeding among its symptoms and kills between 25 and 90 percent of those who fall sick, depending on the virus’s strain, has never before been registered in Guinea. It has now been found in three south-eastern towns and in the capital, Conakry.

The disease could have also spread to neighbouring Sierra Leone, according to World Health Organization (WHO) officials, who reported cases showing similar symptoms there.

` Ukraine Ready to Quit CIS, sets ` Visa Regime ‘with ‘ Russia ‘ asks UN to turn ` Crimea ‘ into DMZ ‘

#AceBreakingNews The new authorities in Kiev have decided to quit the CIS, the organization of former Soviet Republics, the security chief said. Ukraine is also ready to impose a visa regime with Russia and is to ask the UN to turn Crimea into a demilitarized zone.

The National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine has instructed the Foreign Ministry to introduce visas for Russian citizens entering the country, according to a statement by department secretary Andrey Parubiy.

Russians and Ukrainians have been able to travel freely between the two nations since the break-up of the Soviet Union.

In recent weeks, Ukrainian officials have turned back some Russian citizens entering their territory over ostensible concerns that they may take part in protests against the coup-imposed government in Kiev.

Parubiy, who was speaking to the media in Kiev, also said that Ukraine would appeal to the UN to turn Crimea into a demilitarized zone.

Similar UN-mandated zones exist between North and South Korea, and Turkish and Greek Cyprus, as well as in several territories adjacent to Israel.

` Washington has closed the ` Syrian Embassy ‘ giving the reason as the Atrocities of the Assad Regime ‘

#AceWorldNews Washington has closed the Syrian embassy and two of its consulates, and has told all Syrian diplomats that they must leave the country, after Damascus decided to call back its mission last week.

Following the announcement that the Syrian Embassy has suspended its provision of consular services, and in consideration of the atrocities the Assad regime has committed against the Syrian people, we have determined it is unacceptable for individuals appointed by that regime to conduct diplomatic or consular operations in the United States,” said a note from the State Department’s special envoy for Syria, Daniel Rubinstein.

As well as its mission in the US capital, Syria also operated two consulates in Troy (Michigan) and Houston.

Syria’s own decision, reported in Middle Eastern media last week, was allegedly provoked by the US, which made it increasingly difficult to obtain accreditation for new diplomats since the internal conflict broke out in 2011.

RT – Reports also claimed that Damascus would follow the same course of action in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, two other countries that have staunchly supported the rebels alongside the US.

` Crimean’s are not the only ones that want `Independence of State ‘ as `Veneto ‘ vie’s to break from Rome ‘

#AceWorldNews As Crimeans make their way to the polls this Sunday, another region further in the heart of Europe is also deciding its fate in a referendum: the Italian region of Veneto, which is voting on whether to break with Rome.

The independence movement insists the industrial northern region’s wealth is being drain by Rome’s mismanagement of the financial crisis.

Following in the footsteps of Scotland and Catalonia, Venice – the capital of the Italian region of Veneto – will be holding a referendum to form an independent republic.

About 3.8 million people in the region are eligible to vote in the referendum, which runs through Friday.

Leaders of the independence movement say they are not going to wait for Rome’s approval, and if the population votes in favour they will begin the separation process.

The latest polls carried out by the independence movement show that over 60 percent of the population is in favour of becoming independent.

“If there is a majority yes vote, we have scholars drawing up a declaration of independence and there are businesses in the region who say they will begin paying taxes to local authorities instead of to Rome,” Lodovico Pizzati, the spokesman for the independence movement, told the Telegraph newspaper.

` White House has withheld over 9,000 top-secret documents from `Senate Investigation ‘ of the CIA Detention and Torture Program ‘

#AceWorldNews For the last five years, the White House has withheld over 9,000 top-secret documents from a Senate investigation of the CIA’s former detention and torture program. The report comes one day after the CIA was accused of interfering in the probe.

Though the White House has publicly supported the investigation into Bush-era torture, the Obama administration has routinely rejected requests by the Select Senate Committee on Intelligence to see the records, McClatchy news service reported Wednesday.

It is not clear how substantial the documents are for the investigation, yet the White House has shielded them without wielding the claim of executive privilege that has been used often by the Obama and George W. Bush administrations to cover CIA and other government secrets following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The White House told McClatchy a “small percentage” of the 6.2 million pages of documents given to the Committee were “set aside because they raise executive branch confidentiality interests.” The White House added that it had worked with the Committee “to ensure access to the information necessary to review the CIA’s former program.”

Neither the CIA nor the Committee would offer comment to McClatchy.

` Illinois ` State Appeals Court ‘ Judge Rules that `Chicago Police’ Misconduct are Public Record ‘

#AceWorldNews Illinois state appeals court ruled on Monday that misconduct complaints against Chicago police are public record and cannot be kept secret.

The ruling rejected law enforcement’s claim that the complaints were exempt from the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. As a result, files alleging misconduct by Chicago police, as well as files naming police officers who have received the most complaints, must be released to the public when requested.

The court sided with law enforcement in one situation, though, ruling that should a citizen complaint lead to some kind of disciplinary action against an officer, records from that process can still be kept confidential.

A spokeswoman for the city’s Law Department told the Chicago Sun-Times that it will likely take the case all the way to the state Supreme Court.

According to the newspaper, the ruling comes after requests for police files by the independent journalist Jamie Kalven were turned down as part of a federal lawsuit in 2009.

Since the plaintiffs and defendants in that case agreed to seal the police misconduct files under a settlement, the US 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Kalven, a third party at the time, did not have legal standing to make the request.

` Yemeni inmate introduces a landmark lawsuit to challenge practice of force-feeding at Guantanamo Bay ‘

#AceWorldNews Yemeni inmate at Guantanamo Bay has introduced a landmark lawsuit challenging the practice of force-feeding at the US military prison camp.

The case represents the first time a US court will hear allegations of detainee abuse at Gitmo.

The plaintiff, Emad Abdullah Hassan, says he has been force-fed more than 5,000 times since 2007 as part of the military’s efforts to break his hunger strike, the UK-based human-rights organization Reprieve said Tuesday, citing court documents.

The 34-year old has been held at Guantánamo Bay since 2002 without charge and is said to be gravely ill.

“All I want is what President Obama promised – my liberty, and fair treatment for others. I have been cleared for five years, and I have been force-fed for seven years.

This is not a life worth living, it is a life of constant pain and suffering. While I do not want to die, it is surely my right to protest peacefully without being degraded and abused every day.”

Hassan claims detainees are force-fed up to a gallon of nutrients and water at a time, while another inmate said that feeding sessions have been sped up, sometimes compressed into as little as 20 minutes, AP reports.

“When liquid is forced into him at excessive speed, [Hassan] vomits on himself. The feeding process starts again, but the vomit remains. With the nutrient mix comes the forcible administration of medication to counteract his inevitable constipation.

The most humiliating aspect of the whole process, he says, is when he defecates on himself and is forced to remain seated for an hour or more before being returned to his cell — where he will be refused clean clothes,” Clive Stafford Smith, the founder and director of Reprieve who is representing Hassan, wrote in an op-ed for Al-Jazeera.
