The Liberation Day was established under a UN initiative to mark a revolt by Buchenwald prisoners who on April 11, 1945 learned that the Soviet Army was coming to liberate them.

The total of 18 million people were incarcerated in Nazi camps during WW2, 5 million of them were Soviet citizens.

The number of Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War exceeded 300.
Several million people were killed in concentration camps during the WWII.

Buchenwald concentration camp was liberated on April 11 1945.
