` Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams Calls Britain a Post-Christian Country ‘

#AceNewsServices – BRITAIN – April – Britain is now a “post-Christian” country, former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has said.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Lord Williams said Britain was not a nation of believers and that the era of widespread worship was over.

It comes after Prime Minister David Cameron said people in Britain should be confident of its status as “a Christian country”.

Deputy PM Nick Clegg said the Church and state should be separated.

Writing in the Church Times, Mr Cameron said Christians made a difference to people’s lives and should be more evangelical about it.

This prompted a group of 50 public figures to write a letter insisting that the UK was “a non-religious” and “plural” society and that to claim otherwise fostered “alienation and division”.

(Telegraph) April 26 – Britain is now a “post-Christian” country, the former archbishop of Canterbury has declared, as research suggests that the majority of Anglicans and Roman Catholics now feel afraid to express their beliefs.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Lord Williams of Oystermouth says Britain is no longer “a nation of believers” and that a further decline in the sway of the Church is likely in the years ahead.

While the country is not populated exclusively by atheists, the former archbishop warns that the era of regular and widespread worship is over.

In writing in the (Telegraph) on April 20 – SIR – We respect the Prime Minister’s right to his religious beliefs and the fact that they necessarily affect his own life as a politician. However, we object to his characterisation of Britain as a “Christian country” and the negative consequences for politics and society that this engenders.

Apart from in the narrow constitutional sense that we continue to have an established Church, Britain is not a “Christian country”.

Repeated surveys, polls and studies show that most of us as individuals are not Christian in our beliefs or our religious identities.
