#AceWorldNews – CAIRO – May 02 – An elderly political detainee has died of severe mistreatment while in police custody in the northern Egyptian city of Alexandria.
Egyptian security sources said on Friday that the 64-year-old man died due to high blood pressure related problems at Borg al-Arab Prison in Alexandria.
His relatives say he was being tortured and denied urgent medical care at the crowded prison.
The man known as Gomaa Hemeidah was arrested back in late December for taking part in an unsanctioned gathering.
According to independent sources, compiled by a number of human rights groups, at least 62 detainees have lost their lives inside Egypt’s crowded jails over the past few months.
In November, the military-backed authorities passed a law banning all but police-sanctioned protests.
Since then, hundreds of anti-government protesters have been jailed for breaking the law.
