GAZA CRISIS UPDATE (JULY 26, 2014)
- Since July 7, Israel has killed at least 883 Palestinians in Gaza, including at least 194 children.
- Early this morning (July 26), before a 12-hour ceasefire was to come into effect, 18 members of the Al-Najar family were killedincluding 11 children, and many others wounded when Israeli tanks shelled their home in southern Gaza. According to reports, they had been trapped inside the home since Thursday. According to the UN, prior to this most recent indent, 42 families in Gaza had lost at least three or more members killed by the Israeli military in the same incident, totaling 253 people.
- On July 24, Israeli forces killed at least six Palestinians in the occupied West Bank during protests against Israel’s assault on Gaza. Over the past four days, 11 Palestinians have been killed during protests in the West Bank.
- According to the United Nations, as of July 25 at 8 AM ET:
- At least 649 Palestinian civilians have been killed in Gaza, including at least 194 children and 101 women.
- During the 24-hour reporting period (July 24-July 25), 68 Palestinians were reported killed in Gaza, including at least 10 children and nine women.
- Forty-two families in Gaza have lost at least three or more members killed by the Israeli military in the same incident, totalling 253 people. Several of the over 100 women killed were reportedly pregnant, including three belonging to the Abu Jamea family, whose house was attacked by Israel on July 20. (Note: This does not include 18 members of the Al-Najar family killed on June 26.)
- The coping capacity of health professionals and facilities is increasingly overstretched. A rise in the relative number of miscarriages, premature births, and child mortality amongst pregnant women has been reported.
- Eighteen health-related facilities have been hit by Israeli airstrikes or shelling since July 8. At least one doctor and two medics have been killed.
- At least 165,000 children require specialized psychosocial support (PSS) due to trauma caused by the death or injury of someone they know or loss of home.
- 167,000 internally displaced people (IDP) are sheltering in 95 United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and government schools and tens thousands of others are taking refuge elsewhere. This is more than double the number of Palestinians who took refuge at UN facilities during Israel’s devastating three-week assault on Gaza in the winter of 2008-2009,Operation Cast Lead. All are in need of emergency food assistance.
- Israel has destroyed or severely damaged approximately 650 residential properties, including numerous multi-story buildings, causing hundreds of civilian casualties.
- Ninety-two UN installations have been damaged.
- During the reporting period, six UNRWA schools were damaged. Since July 7, 123 schools have been. On July 24, five people were wounded when the Israeli military shelled the Deir al-Balah girls school in central Gaza, which was sheltering approximately 1500 IDPs. At least six teachers are known to have been killed.
- The Israeli army has declared 44% of the tiny Gaza Strip a military “buffer zone.”
