REPLY TO PRESIDENT OBAMA’S POINTS ON ISRAELI INCURSION

PROTECTIVE EDGE ON DAY 27

DIANA BUTTU, Ramallah-based analyst, former advisor to Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian negotiators, and Policy Advisor to Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network:

“President Obama has failed the Palestinian people and failed the international community. By adopting, wholeheartedly, Israel’s position, President Obama has made it clear that he is unable or unwilling to stop Israel – the country that receives more U.S. aid than any country in the world – from targeting Palestinian civilians, at least 800 of whom have been killed by the U.S.-supplied Israeli military since July 7. President Obama has once again given cover to those who carry out war crimes by blaming Palestinian civilian deaths on Palestinians themselves – blaming the victims – despite overwhelming evidence that Israel systematically uses disproportionate deadly force in densely populated areas.

“If President Obama is truly concerned about the horrific carnage Israel is inflicting on the defenceless population of Gaza, he should stop supplying the Israeli military with the weapons it’s using to kill innocent men, women, and children, as he did just two days ago when he approved a request to resupply the Israeli army with ammunition that it’s using in Gaza.”

YOUSEF MUNAYYER, Executive Director of the Jerusalem Fund and the Palestine Center in Washington, DC:

“President Obama expressed numerous concerns today about the limits of American power to achieve goals around the world. This may be right in some areas but it isn’t true in Israel and Palestine. The United States has the leverage necessary and is in a unique position to reign in the Israelis but it refuses to do so. In fact, the United States is directly complicit in the crimes Israel is committing in Gaza by providing diplomatic cover and military aid. This week, as the United States was condemning the Israeli shelling of a UN school where 17 Palestinian civilians were killed, President Obama simultaneously announced the United States would open its arms caches to Israel and provide artillery that would help Israeli tanks reload and fire again on civilians. President Obama says he is heartbroken over the scenes in Gaza. If that is true, it is disappointing because that means the President is well aware of the horrors in Gaza, which he personally can do something to stop, and yet he still fails to do so.”

CECILIE SURASKY, Deputy Director of Jewish Voice for Peace:

"In the past three weeks, Israel has killed more than 800 Palestinian civilians in Gaza, including almost 250 children, according to the United Nations, using some of the most advanced weaponry in the world. For the last 47 years, Israel has militarily occupied the Palestinian people and taken their land and rights, and for the last seven years Israel has kept 1.8 million people in Gaza virtual prisoners with a devastating blockade. And they have demanded, and received, U.S. support for all of this. While Israel has the right and obligation to protect its citizens, in what dictionary would any of this be defined as ‘self-defense’?"
