#AceNewsReport – May.18: David Thomas George Hampshire, 28 (12.08.90) of Osborne Square, Dagenham, appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, 13 May where he pleaded guilty to four charges of burglary: He will be sentenced at the same court on Friday, 31 May.
The court heard that Hampshire had been employed as a window cleaner and persuaded victims to allow him entrance to their properties to use the toilet:
On 21 September 2018, Hampshire cleaned the windows of the first victim in Rosedale Road before returning the next day to collect payment: On doing so, he asked whether he could use the toilet and was given permission to go upstairs unsupervised………..Later that day, the victim, aged 69, realised that a number of items of jewellery were missing and reported her suspicions to the company owner who said he would terminate Hampshire’s employment.
A few weeks later, on 2 November 2018, Hampshire used the same methods to steal jewellery from properties on Walfrey Gardens and Farmway, Dagenham, which he had previously visited to clean windows.
In both cases, the victims recognised and trusted Hampshire and it was only a short time after he left their homes that they realised jewellery had been taken from their bedrooms.
Hampshire was arrested by police later that evening and was charged and remanded by police:
Later in November, another victim, aged 70, came forward to police reporting that jewellery had gone missing from her house in October and that she believed the suspect to be her former window cleaner David Hampshire: He was arrested for a further offence, charged the same day and was remanded by police to appear before the courts.
Hampshire originally pleaded not guilty to all offences but following a thorough investigation by the Met’s East Area Command Unit, he changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial.
PC Raheel Sarwar, who led the investigation, said: “Although most of the items stolen in these burglaries were not worth a great deal of money, each piece was of significant sentimental value to the victims who were left devastated when they were taken: “The victims had trust in Hampshire, who completely abused the kindness they showed by letting him into their homes…………..“Thanks to the thorough investigation carried out by our officers, Hampshire had no choice but to admit his guilt and we hope this brings some level of closure to the victims caught up in his deceitful actions…….“We are continuing to work to reunite the victims in this case with their jewellery, which we believe may have been pawned, and urge anyone with information to come forward.”
