#AceNewsReport – June.14: Police arrived after an alarm was activated and an 11-hour stand-off ensued: The District Court heard the police helicopter was circling and Special Tasks and Rescue (STAR) Force officers found Mann hiding inside an enclosure on the roof of the building used to house air-conditioning units: Judge Steven McEwen said the officer yelled “show me your hands”……………”The defendant turned towards him and pointed the shotgun directly at him,” he said………..”The STAR Force officer discharged his handgun from his awkward position on the beam before moving back out of the defendant’s sight.”……………Judge McEwen said a second officer then approached Mann and yelled “drop the weapon, drop the weapon now, put it down”…………”He turned towards the second STAR Force officer and pulled the shotgun around so the muzzle was pointed at the officer,” he said………..”The STAR officer then shot him, wounding him between the left shoulder blade and shoulder.”
The court heard breaking into the real estate office was part of a two-week crime spree where Mann had also robbed a post office at gun point: On Friday, Mann was sentenced for 11 offences in total, some of which he pleaded guilty to and some of which he was found guilty at separate trials.
In handing down the sentence, Judge McEwen said Mann had a “shocking” criminal record and at the time of the crime spree he was addicted to methamphetamine: “He has a history of severe drug abuse problems,” he said: “He has a history of generalised impulse control problems in the community and has engaged in reckless thrill-seeking offending behaviours.”
Judge McEwen said it was “extraordinary” that after being shot at by police Mann again attempted to point his gun at an officer: “His actions throughout this incident, including having a shotgun with him at all, … and his response in pointing the firearm at each of the armed officers are indicative of a man making extraordinarily bad, and to a degree, irrational decisions,” he said: “His decision making was clearly compromised … he was fortunate not to have been fatally wounded……”The injury he did sustain was a direct consequence of his own dangerous and criminal conduct.”
Mann’s lawyer Nick Vadasz told the court his client “unconditionally apologises” for his offending and now accepts the wrongfulness of his behaviour: He said Mann had written letters of apology to South Australian Police and each of his victims.
After multiple trials, he was today sentenced to 20 years in prison for 11 offences in total and ordered to serve a non-parole period of 16 years.
