(ADELAIDE, Australia.) Court Report: Nurse sentenced to nearly 10yrs in prison for trying to kill his wife i n a ‘ brutal cowardly attack ‘ in 2017 after she found out he was having an affair he will s erve at least five-and-a-half-years before parole #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Aug.08: An Adelaide nurse has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for trying to kill his wife in a “brutal and cowardly” attack, while his call to emergency services was tendered as evidence in court: George Alexander Freeman, 61, pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of his wife Carron Wickens, 57, in December 2017: The Supreme Court heard Freeman waited for his adult stepson to leave for work before attacking Ms Wickens in her bedroom with a 30-centimetre knife: Freeman bought the knife five days earlier from The Reject Shop: The court heard Freeman showed no remorse as he repeatedly stabbed his wife and watched as she lay dying on the floor: She had discovered he had been cheating on her and was “exhausted by his lies”……….Justice Sam Doyle today sentenced him to nine years and 10 months in prison: “Your attempt to murder the victim was not a fleeting episode, nor was your intention to kill momentary,”

Justice Doyle said: “The attack itself lasted over several minutes and included you leaving and returning to the victim’s bedroom to continue your assault…………..”I accept the prosecution submission that your conduct involved an unprovoked, premeditated, brutal and cowardly attack upon Ms Wickens in her own home — a place where she had the right to feel safe and secure.” ………..Justice Doyle ordered Freeman serve a non-parole period of five-and-a-half years: The court heard the non-parole period was lowered due to Freeman’s deteriorating health, remorse and reasonable prospects of rehabilitation: “I have also taken into consideration that any term of imprisonment will involve a greater level of hardship for you because of your Parkinson’s disease,” Justice Doyle said.

Freeman will be eligible for parole in June 2023.

The court heard after the attack Freeman called Ms Wickens’ elderly father and told him he had stabbed his daughter: It was only after Ms Wickens’ father urged him to call for help that Freeman eventually called an ambulance.

“You told the operators that you had stabbed your wife to death,” Justice Doyle said: “You did not however render any physical assistance to her, despite acknowledging to the ambulance officer that she was ‘just alive’ … and despite having the ability and knowledge to do so through your training as a nurse.”…………….The court heard Freeman was motivated by “festering anger” over Ms Wickens wanting to end their marriage after discovering he had been unfaithful.

In a triple zero call released by the court, Freeman told the operator: “I need an ambulance and I need police. I’ve just stabbed my wife to death”….He described how she was unconscious, but breathing……….”And is there any serious bleeding?” the operator asked…………..”Yes, there’s blood everywhere in the bedroom,” Freeman said: The operator then gave him instructions on how to control the bleeding before police and paramedics arrived.

Prosecutor Kelly Smith described the attack as “vicious and cowardly” during sentencing submissions last month: Outside court this morning Ms Wickens said “no amount of sentence will right the wrong inflicted by my husband”…….”To those men and women who are in abusive relationships, I encourage you to value your worth,” she said………..”Recognise the signs of abuse, seek help and plan your escape silently to protect the safety of yourself and your loved ones: “Whilst I live with the memory of the violent attack from someone I loved and trusted, as well as the physical and emotional impacts of the many injuries sustained, I am focused on healing and moving forward with my life.”
