The suicide bomber wanted to target rally of a religious group, but blew himself up when police stopped him, Abdul Razzaq Cheema, Quetta police chief, told reporters:

Last month, 13 people were killed in Quetta when blast ripped through a mosque during evening prayers: Mineral-rich Balochistan province is at the center of the $60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is part of Beijing’s massive Belt and Road infrastructure project; Violence in Baluchistan has fuelled concerns about the security of projects such as a planned energy link from western China to Pakistan’s southern port of Gwadar.
