MOSCOW, January 7 (Sputnik) – Russia’s coronavirus tally has increased by 23,541 cases recorded over the past 24 hours, slightly down from the 24,217 registered the day before, the government’s coronavirus response center said in an update on Thursday.
“Over the past day, 23,541 coronavirus cases were confirmed across 85 Russian regions, including 2,681 cases (11.4 percent) without clinical symptoms,” the center said: The highest local daily increases were confirmed in Moscow (4,871), St. Petersburg (3,005) and the Moscow Region (1,228), as stated in the update.
Russia’s cumulative case count has now reached 3,332,142 cases, with the rate of increase at 0.7 percent, according to the center.
The death toll has reached 60,457, with an increase of 506 over the past day, up from 445 from the day before. Moscow and St.Petersburg reported highest daily increase in coronavirus-related fatalities — 76 and 69 respectively.
Total recoveries count 2,709,452 as 23,729 more people were discharged from hospitals over the past day, up from 23,055 from the day before @Sputnik

TOKYO, January 7 (Sputnik) – Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Thursday declared the second state of emergency that will stay in force until February 7 in the Japanese prefectures of Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama due to a rapid spike in COVID-19 cases registered in the country: On Wednesday, Japan confirmed a new daily record of 6,004 COVID-19 infections registered over the past 24 hours, with 1,591 new cases recorded in Tokyo. Japanese think tanks suggested that the announcement of a state of emergency in the country may result in an up to 0.88 percent contraction of the economy and the loss of 75,000 jobs: “It will stay in force from January 8 to February 7 in the prefectures of Saitama, Chiba, in Tokyo and in the prefecture of Kanagawa,” the prime minister said at the meeting of the COVID-19 response headquarters: Under the state of emergency, all bars and restaurants will be obliged to close at 8 p.m. The country’s government has pledged to allocate compensatory funds to the businesses that will adhere to the restrictions. Japanese entities will have to encourage their employees to work from home, while mass gathering will be limited to 5,000 people: The previous state of emergency was declared in Japan in early April and was lifted on May 25: @Sputnik

LONDON, January 6 (Sputnik) – The UK Department of Health reported a further 1,041 coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday, the highest daily toll seen in the country since April: The death toll now stand at 77,346. April 8 was the deadliest day since the start of the pandemic, with 1,072 people dying with COVID-19.
England went into its third lockdown on Wednesday morning, in an effort to curb the spread of a more transmissible strain that was found there in December.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the vaccine rollout was the country’s “route back to normal.” More than 1.3 million people have been vaccinated since last month, more than the rest of Europe combined, he estimated @Sputnik
