It is unclear whether the latest developments will shed any light on what then happened to Andrew.

The 45-year-old was also accused of possession of indecent images of children.

South Yorkshire Police said it was assisted by the Metropolitan Police in detaining the pair on Wednesday.

Senior investigating officer, detective inspector Andy Knowles, said: ‘Our priority at this time is supporting Andrew’s family while we work through this new line of enquiry in the investigation.

‘We are in close contact with them and they ask that their privacy is respected as our investigation continues.’

Andrew had skipped school and taken out around £200 in cash out on the day he disappeared, before buying a one-way ticket to London.

Various images of what he may now look like now have since been issued, with reference to a distinctive double ridge on his right ear.
