(LONDON) #Coronavirus Travel Report: UK travellers returning from “red list” countries are flying home via Turkey to avoid hefty hotel quarantine #AceHealthDesk

#AceHealthReport – May.06: Travellers from countries on the red list would otherwise face bills of up to £1,750-per-person to isolate in a hotel if they flew to the UK directly:

#CoronavirusNewsDesk#Covid19 Britons fly via Turkey to avoid costly quarantine: Passengers are breaking their journey in Istanbul, and staying in hotels there for a fraction of the cost they would have to pay in Britain but are they endangering other peoples lives?

Istanbul in Turkey is under a lockdown but foreign tourists are exempt

Those using the route must still quarantine at home once back in the UK.

One hotel worker in Istanbul said he had seen British nationals flying in from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh – which are all on the UK’s red list.

The BBC has also spoken to travellers returning from Pakistan to the UK, many of whom were attending weddings or funerals and say they couldn’t afford the cost of quarantining once the rules changed.

As long as they isolate at home for 10 days after returning from a non-red list country, they are not breaking the UK government’s Covid rules.

‘Red list’ countries

The UK has a so-called red list with travel heavily restricted to countries on it – usually those with high coronavirus rates.

Any British citizen arriving home who has been to a country on the list in the past 10 days must then pay to quarantine in a government-approved hotel.

The cost is £1,750 for a single adult, while a family of four with teenage children would pay £3,700. Guests are largely restricted to their rooms for the duration.

By comparison, anyone arriving in the UK from a country not on the list is told to self-isolate at home – so long as they’ve not been in a red list country in the past 10 days.

SuppliedHashir, a student, said he could not afford the cost of quarantining in the UK

One travel agent in Bradford said some of his clients who had travelled to Pakistan had been left facing a hefty bill to return home after the country was placed on UK’s banned list on 9 April.

“I’ve got customers who can’t afford to come back,” said Ascher Khawaja of Oltrax Travel, citing UK quarantine costs. To ease the burden on his clients, Mr Khawaja says he has arranged 15-20 journeys home via Turkey.

The country brought in a three-week lockdown last week because of rising infections – but it has not been added to the UK’s red list. “With the hotel factored in, it works out at around £600 compared to £1,700-plus,” he said.

Anyone entering Turkey must have had a negative Covid test within 72 hours. They also must have a negative PCR test to leave the country. Foreign tourists are, however, exempt from Turkey’s current lockdown rules.

TV and a fridge

Bradford businessman Mohammad Saad travelled to Pakistan on 23 March to attend his nephew’s funeral and had been due to fly home on 10 April – the day after Pakistan was added to the red list.

When he couldn’t change his flights, he and his 16-year-old son flew to Turkey instead. The cost was about £450 for 10 days in Istanbul, he said.

“It’s like an extra holiday. Then you can fly back into the UK from Istanbul without any hotel quarantine.”

Hashir, a 21-year-old student returning from Pakistan, said he had met other Britons at the airport when he arrived in Istanbul.

“There’s no way I have that money, I’m a university student,” said Hashir, referring to the cost of returning directly to the UK. He is due back in the UK on 7 May.

Zulfiqar Ali, a 45-year-old taxi driver from Leeds, travelled from Pakistan to Istanbul on 24 April. “I paid £100 for 11 nights. It’s a double bed, a TV and a fridge. It was online and food was very cheap.”

He said he was returning to the UK on 5 May.

SuppliedZulfiqar Ali paid £100 for 11 nights in Istanbul

The BBC has also spoken to staff at hotels in Istanbul. One accommodation worker in the old city said British travellers were using the country as “a bridge”.

His hotel had booked British passport holders travelling from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India – all on the red list, he said.

Turkey has since tightened its rules on people arriving from India, who must now quarantine in designated dormitories.

A manager at another hotel in the city said, through his membership of an international booking website, he could see there had been a rise in people travelling from Pakistan and India to Istanbul.

Bradford MP Naz Shah said others had been unable to book family rooms on the UK hotel quarantine booking system. She said she was “deeply concerned” about children potentially missing school because their parents can’t afford to fly home.

The UK’s Department for Transport said people who had not been in a red list country for the past 10 days were not prevented from entering the UK – but should isolate at home.

It said the rules were aimed at stopping people – other than British residents – entering the UK from red list countries.

(SPAIN) Guardia Civil Report: Seven people, five men and two women, are now being investigated for crimes against historical heritage after the theft of a an Armada cannon looted by fishermen #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.06: The investigation by the Guardia Civil began after a group of shellfish fishermen reported discovering three bronze cannons in the sea on April 14 in Punta de Espiñeirido, northern Spain:

Guardia Civil recover 16th century cannon from Spanish Armada looted by fishermen: Seven people, five men and two women, are now being investigated for crimes against historical heritage after the theft of a cannon, which is thought to have belonged to a ship sent by Spain’s Felipe II to fight the English in 1596 as part of the “2nd” Spanish Armada, in revenge for the English sacking of Cádiz in 1596 according to Spanish News today

Guardia Civil

Nearly 5,000 men died during the fierce storm which struck the Spanish fleet off Cape Finisterre, and 38 ships were lost.

Excited by the possibility that this could be a major wreck site, the Xunta de Galicia sent a team to the site the following day, but were only able to locate two of the three guns in spite of a concerted search. Suspicion was immediately aroused that the third cannon had been stolen, a hypòthesis which was confirmed when video footage emerged showing one of the cannons being lifted by a rope whilst it was being stolen.

Police rapidly identified those who had taken part in the alleged theft and during the course of the investigation, one of the  suspects handed the cannon over to the investigating officers.

The cannon was subsequently moved to the Museo del Mar in Vigo (Pontevedra) for assessment and conservation.

Work will now begin to stabilise the metal to prevent deterioration and experts will also work to learn more about the history of the three cannon and try to identify the vessel from which they came.

It’s unusual for artefacts of this nature to be lying on the seabed without forming part of a wrecksite, for which reason it is completely illegal to remove any archaeological artefact from the seabed.

Divers or fishermen locating any historical artefact should photograph their find and take GPS co-ordinates, before reporting the find to the Guardia Civíl.

This is because the removal of artefacts can compromise the evidence about a wreck and destroy valuable archaeological information, as well as encouraging the illegal re-sale of historical artefacts recovered from the sea. It can also be extremely dangerous; many remnants of armed conflicts lie off the Spanish coastline and unexploded bombs, mines and artillery shells are still found frequently by leisure divers; on occasions, by now defunct leisure divers who ignored the instructions not to touch anything found on the seabed.

(LONDON) RECALL ALERT: Peloton has recalled about 125,000 treadmills in the US after the death of a six-year-old child #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.06: In March the firm warned parents to keep children away from its Tread+ machine after the death of the six-year-old, who was pulled underneath the rear of the treadmill.

‘Peloton boss John Foley said the firm had “made a mistake” in not recalling the machines sooner’

Peloton recalls treadmills after child’s death: ‘A US watchdog said the Tread and Tread+ machines pose a risk of injury or death to adults, children and pets if they get pulled underneath: Peloton warning after ‘tragic’ child death and in addition to the death, Peloton had 72 reports of injuries such as broken bones, cuts and grazes.

I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+,” Mr Foley said in a statement on Wednesday.

Peloton treadmill

At the time Mr Foley called it a “tragic accident” – one of a “small handful” of incidents in which children have been hurt on the firm’s exercise equipment.

“We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologise.”

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said that Peloton had voluntarily recalled the Tread+ and Peloton Tread, which posed a safety risk because the display console can fall off.

An agreement between the watchdog and Peloton means the firm must stop selling the machines in the US and give a full refund to people who want to return them.

Robert Adler, Acting Chairman of the CPSC, said: “The agreement between CPSC and Peloton is the result of weeks of intense negotiation and effort, culminating in a cooperative agreement that I believe serves the best interests of Peloton and of consumers.

“I would like to thank the CPSC technical staff who have worked tirelessly to protect consumers and to warn the public. Today we have taken steps to prevent further harm from these two products.”

(BIRMINGHAM, U.K.) Court Report: A PC who Tasered an ex-footballer said he deployed the weapon after the sportsman threatened to “take him to the gates of hell”, #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.06: PC Benjamin Monk is on trial charged with murdering Aston Villa star Dalian Atkinson in Shropshire in 2016:

BIRMINGHAM: Dalian Atkinson: On Tuesday, jurors also heard PC Monk, 42, had kicked Mr Atkinson in the head with such force, imprints of his bootlaces were left…….As prosecutors claim he and PC Mary-Ellen Bettley-Smith, who is charged with assault, used excessive force. Both deny wrongdoing.

Dalian Atkinson
Former Aston Villa striker Dalian Atkinson died in 2016 in Telford, Shropshire, at the age of 48

Jurors heard Mr Atkinson was Tasered six times longer than standard.

The 48-year-old died in the early hours of 15 August 2016 after the officers responded to reports of him acting erratically outside his father’s house in Meadow Close, Telford.

Prosecution QC Alexandra Healy told Birmingham Crown Court that in an interview under caution after the incident, PC Monk had said the officers arrived to hear a “large row” and Mr Atkinson’s behaviour made him “fearful for himself, his partner and whoever was in the property”.

PA MediaMary Ellen Bettley-Smith (L) and Benjamin Monk (R) responded to a call-out to Mr Atkinson’s father’s address in Telford in 2016

“He explained that when Mr Atkinson appeared at the doorway of the house he was in an obvious rage and said ‘This is the Messiah’,” Ms Healy said.

“Mr Atkinson was apparently unconcerned when presented with the Taser, saying, ‘I am going to take you to the gates of hell’,” Ms Healy continued, paraphrasing PC Monk’s interview.

“Delivering two forceful kicks to Mr Atkinson’s head cannot have been an act in reasonable self defence,” prosecutors said.

“It is is difficult, isn’t it, to see how a kick to the head could ever be a reasonable act taken to prevent Mr Atkinson from getting up.”

In his interviews, Ms Healy recounted PC Monk admitted to a single kick “to enable him to control and restrain Mr Atkinson” but the officer believed he struck his shoulder.

PA MediaIn interviews under caution, PC Benjamin Monk said he kicked Mr Atkinson just once to restrain him

A pathologist recorded a narrative cause of death, Ms Healy told the court, which found Mr Atkinson died due to cardio-respiratory arrest, “close in time to the deployment of Taser, followed by a brief period of restraint and blunt force trauma”.

Despite Mr Atkinson’s underlying health conditions, including heart and kidney disease, the pathologist concluded these actions made a significant contribution to his death.

After two previous Taser cartridges had failed, a third one was successfully deployed.

It left Mr Atkinson, who also played for Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday, unconscious and his ability to breathe was reduced by the kicks to his head, the court heard.

The prosecution concluded its opening statement by making its case that the police officers ceased acting in self-defence after the third Taser cartridge was discharged, “rather they acted in anger”.

Ms Healy also claimed that similarities in the accounts of PC Monk and PC Bettley-Smith suggested “the two officers discussed between themselves how best to account for what they knew was an unlawful attack on an unarmed man”.

PA MediaKenroy Atkinson, the brother of former footballer Dalian Atkinson, was seen arriving at Birmingham Crown Court

PC Bettley-Smith is alleged to have used her baton to strike Mr Atkinson in the back while he lay incapacitated in the road.

The defence denied any suggestion the officers acted in fear or anger, instead arguing their actions were “necessary and reasonable in the face of Mr Atkinson’s actions”.

Patrick Gibbs QC, defending PC Monk, said it was “not in dispute” that the officer had kicked Mr Atkinson twice in the head.

“What is in dispute is why did he do that?,” Mr Gibbs said. “He has always said he was terrified and that Mr Atkinson, after that third Taser had been effective, initially at least, he was trying to get up.”

PC Bettley-Smith’s defence barrister, Richard Smith QC, told jurors the officer believed her actions to be “necessary and reasonable as part of her and Mr Monk’s continuing efforts to restrain and detain an unpredictable and threateningly violent man as she perceived him to be”.

PC Monk denies murder as well as an alternative charge of manslaughter. PC Bettley-Smith, 31, denies assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

(LONDON) JUST IN: Two Royal Navy vessels are patrolling waters around Jersey as about 60 French and Jersey boats protest over post-Brexit fishing rights #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.06: France has threatened to cut off electricity to the island: No 10 said it sent the two Navy vessels to “monitor the situation”.

LONDON: PM Boris Johnson sends two UK Royal Navy ships to patrol Jersey amid fishing row with France: French fishermen, who have gathered at the island’s main St Helier port, say their rights are unfairly restricted by licences issued by the island under a system launched last week as Jersey officials say that they were agreed under the deal and French officials say they will cut off electricity and food supplies to the island’ Live updates: Latest on protest in St Helier

BBC News

French fishing boats at the port of St Helier
About 60 French and Jersey boats are at the entrance to the island’s main port of St Helier

HMS Severn, which has previously been used to shadow Russian navy warships off the English coast, and HMS Tamar, arrived on Thursday morning.

The ships are routinely used for fisheries protection – with sailors able to board other boats for spot checks.

The new fishing rules – introduced by the Jersey government under the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) – require French boats to show they have a history of fishing in Jersey’s waters. But it has been claimed additional requirements were added without notice so who really owns UK fishing rights?

French authorities say “new technical measures” had not been communicated to the EU, rendering them “null and void”.

The fishing boats are at the entrance to the island’s main port of St Helier, but they pulled away earlier to allow a freight vessel to leave.

HMS Severn can be seen from the port, sitting off about a mile from the French boats and is maintaining a presence and not making any effort to intervene.

At the scene: ‘Red flares burning bright’

By Freddie Miller, BBC Jersey political reporter

In the darkness you could see the lights from boats slowly making their way from the direction of France towards Jersey. They then all gathered outside the St Helier harbour and they stayed there for about half an hour.

At about 06:30 BST they started making their way slowly into the harbour. Flares were set off – red flares, orange flares, burning bright. French flags were being flown, there were banners talking about fishing obviously in French.

Meanwhile, on the pier-side where I am, islanders had gathered – probably about 30 in total, including a couple of police officers. Jersey flags had been hung to the railings of the pier, some were waving flags.

There were also some Jersey boats in support of the French, flying both French and Jersey flags, and also a couple that were there trying to stop the French from coming into the harbour.

Amidst all of this you’ve got the two Navy vessels in the distance – you can just see the outline shadow of them through the mist, just keeping watch of everything.”

MEP Stephanie Yon-Courtin, a member of the EU fisheries committee, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme they were “taken by surprise” by new fishing rules, adding: “We are counting on the good faith from Jersey and the UK government to help and deescalate the tension.”

Of the threats to cut off electricity to Jersey, she said “these are only words we are not ready for war”, but she added “all retaliatory measures will be explored”.

On Wednesday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged his “unwavering support” for Jersey, the largest Channel Island and a Crown dependency, located 14 miles (22km) off France and “any blockade” would be “completely unjustified”.

HMS Severn is one of the two offshore patrol vessels monitoring Jersey waters

At the scene: ‘More shock than anger’

Their boats were draped with makeshift banners – which read “en colère”- we are angry, writes BBC Europe correspondent Jean Mackenzie, who was with the fishermen as they set off from the French coast.

A handful left this small port on the Normandy coast about 02:30, to be joined by dozens more on the way to Jersey. The fishermen seemed more shocked than angry, that their access to waters they have fished in for decades is being challenged.

What does the Brexit trade deal mean for fishing? Under the post-Brexit trade deal, Jersey has to allow European vessels into its waters, but they now need licences – but the fishermen say the permits have come with a long list of restrictions that were never agreed.

Reacting to the French maritime minister’s threat to cut off Jersey’s electricity in retaliation – the fishermen were pleased.

“It’s good to know our country is on our side,” they said

Mr Johnson held talks with Jersey’s Chief Minister John Le Fondré and Minister of External Affairs Ian Gorst, and “stressed the urgent need for a de-escalation in tensions” between Jersey and France.

Senator Gorst told the BBC the French threats were “disproportionate” but he was expecting a “peaceful demonstration” by fisherman on Thursday morning.

A statement from the Jersey government read: “Diplomatic efforts will continue to resolve the outstanding issues relating to fishing licences and to de-escalate the situation.”

Dimitri Rogoff, head of fisheries for the Normandy region, said the boats would not try to block St Helier and would return to France in the afternoon, AFP reported.

What is the Jersey fishing row about?

French fishermen have complained about being prevented from operating in British waters because of difficulties in obtaining licences.

Under an agreement with the EU, French boat operators must show a history of fishing in the area to receive a licence for Jersey’s waters. But it has been claimed additional requirements were added without notice.

Jersey has the sole power to issue the licences, and as of last week all fishing boats were required to have a licence to operate there.

On Friday, the Jersey government granted 41 permits to French fishing vessels that are equipped with technology that allows them to be located.

But the French government claimed the list of approved ships came with further demands that “were not arranged or discussed, and which we were not notified about”.

Chris Le Masurier, who runs Jersey Oyster and Normandy Trader Freight, said the French fisherman were rightly upset by the situation.

He said: “I see it as very much an insult to them and they are extremely upset. The criteria that they were given was to prove they have fished in Jersey waters for 10 days. Nothing about what species were caught, nothing about if you’ve fished for 20 days or 30 days [and having to] prove that.”

But Don Thompson, from the Jersey Fisherman’s Association, said affected French crews have “had since 1 January” to comply with the new rules and “perhaps some of the boats that perhaps didn’t qualify are a little bit put-out”.

The threat to cut off Jersey’s electricity supply – 95% of which is delivered by three underwater cables from France – was made by French Maritime Minister Annick Girardin on Tuesday.

HMS Severn and HMS Tamar are based in Portsmouth. They are both 90.5m in length, have two large guns, including a short-range anti-aircraft weapon, and are crewed by 45 sailors and up to 50 Royal Marines.

(MINNESOTA) Justice Dept Report: Second Member Of “Boogaloo Bois” Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Provide Material Support to Hamas #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.06: A Minnesota man pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to provide material support and resources, namely property, services and weapons, to what he believed was Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization, for use against Israeli and U.S. military personnel overseas.

According to court documents, Michael Solomon, 31, of New Brighton, Minn., was a member of the “Boogaloo Bois,” a group of individuals who espouse violent anti-government sentiments. In late May 2020, the FBI initiated an investigation into Solomon and co-defendant Benjamin Ryan Teeter, both members of the “Boogaloo Bois,” and a sub-group called the “Boojahideen.”

According to court documents, on June 10, 2020, Solomon and Teeter met with a confidential human source (CHS), whom the defendants believed to be a member of Hamas. During this meeting, Solomon and Teeter proposed assisting Hamas as a means of furthering the goals of the Boogaloo Bois. Throughout the course of the conspiracy, Solomon used encrypted messaging applications to communicate with Teeter and the CHS about various aspects of the conspiracy.

On June 28, 2020, Solomon, Teeter and the CHS met an undercover employee of the FBI (UCE) that Solomon believed was a member of Hamas. During this meeting, Solomon and Teeter proposed manufacturing suppressors, untraceable firearms and fully automatic firearms for Hamas.

On July 6, 2020, Solomon and Teeter purchased a drill press for the purpose of manufacturing suppressors for Hamas. Solomon admitted that he and Teeter had planned to use the drill press to also manufacture suppressors for members of the Boogaloo Bois. Solomon and Teeter brought the drill press to Solomon’s home and later used the drill press to manufacture five suppressors.

On July 30, 2020, Solomon and Teeter delivered the suppressors to the CHS and UCE believing those devices would be used by the militant wing of Hamas. During that meeting, the defendants agreed to manufacture additional suppressors for Hamas believing that the next batch of suppressors would be used against Israeli and U.S. military personnel overseas.

Solomon admitted that he and Teeter again met the UCE on Aug. 29, 2020. During this meeting, the defendants gave the UCE a 3-D printed “auto sear” believing that the auto sear would be used by Hamas to convert semi-automatic rifles into fully automatic rifles. At this time, Solomon and Teeter agreed to obtain, and did obtain, another order of auto sears for the CHS and the UCE.

Solomon pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. Solomon faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Acting U.S. Attorney W. Anders Folk for the District of Minnesota; Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the Justice Department’s National Security Division; and Special Agent in Charge Michael Paul of the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office made the announcement after Senior U.S. District Judge Michael J. Davis accepted the plea.

(COLUMBIA) LATEST: A number of police stations have been attacked in the capital of Bogotá, as widespread protests run into a second week #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.06: Mayor Claudia López requested the help of the army to guard the stations, calling the violence “inadmissible”.

Colombia Protests: ‘At least 19 deaths have been confirmed since they started & the UN has urged the security forces to refrain from using firearms’ as demonstrators were gathering for fresh nationwide protests on Wednesday’

A demonstrator makes noise banging a pot during a protest against the government of President Ivan Duque on 4 May
Demonstrators are now calling for reforms in some other areas, including education and healthcare

The victims include 18 civilians and a police officer, Colombia’s ombudsman said. More than 800 people have been injured in clashes between the police and demonstrators while more than 80 others are reported as missing.

Bogotá’s city officials said 25 immediate response police commando posts, known as CAI for the initials in Spanish, had been attacked during the night. CAI are small police stations which can be found dotted across neighbourhoods and often consist of little more than a room or two.

One CAI was set on fire with 15 officers inside, who managed to escape alive, Mr López said. There were also reports of police being shot and being attacked by people with knives, she added.

On Wednesday, city officials said the night of violence across Bogotá had left 72 civilians and 19 police officers injured. Incidents were also reported in other cities including Cali, where the clashes have been at their most violent.

Why are people protesting?

The demonstrations started on 28 April and were initially in opposition to the tax reform that the government said was key to mitigating the country’s economic crisis.

The rallies were organised by the biggest trade unions, but were also joined by many middle-class people who feared the changes could see them slip into poverty.

AFP: The nationwide protests were initially against the now-cancelled tax reform bill

The proposal would have lowered the threshold at which salaries are taxed, affecting anyone with a monthly income of 2.6m pesos ($684; £493) or more. It would also have eliminated many of the current exemptions enjoyed by individuals, as well as increasing taxes imposed on businesses.

On Sunday, President Iván Duque announced he would withdraw the bill. But that was not enough to stop the protests, which have become a broad call for improvements to Colombia’s pension, health and education systems, as well as against what demonstrators say is excessive use of violence by the security forces.

What is happening in Cali?

Some of the most violent incidents have been reported in the western city of Cali, the country’s third largest. Roads have been blocked and dozens of police, public and private buildings attacked. The commander of the army has been sent to the city to co-ordinate the security efforts.

AFPCali has been the scene of some of the worst clashes

The United Nations’ human rights office said on Tuesday that it was “deeply alarmed” by the violence against protesters in the city.

It said that “police opened fire on demonstrators” in Cali on Monday. While no official figures have been released yet, local media say at least five people were killed.

Kevin Reyes, a community leader, told BBC Mundo that “hooded police and military officers fired using semiautomatic weapons and rifles” during a demonstration. “There were children and mothers,” he added.

Experts say other factors have contributed to the unrest: this is one of the most violent cities in the country, located in a region affected by decades of conflict waged by paramilitary groups and drug traffickers. They also point to the high number of weapons in the area.

“There are civilian groups calling for de-escalation of violence,” said Katherine Aguirre, a human rights expert. “But we’ve also seen groups of citizens who have started shooting from their homes, vigilantism stimulated by the flow of weapons in the city.”

What is the government saying?

The government has blamed the violence on left-wing rebels. It says it is being stoked by members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) as well dissident factions of the Farc guerrilla group, who have not accepted the 2016 peace deal and have refused to disband.

“The violence was systematic, premeditated and financed by criminal organisations,” Defence Minister Diego Molano said.

Police officials say, in many cases, it was their officers who were attacked as they tried to prevent “criminal elements” from looting stores and torching buses.

Meanwhile, President Duque said the government was ready for national dialogue and announced the creation of a “space to listen to citizens and construct solutions”.

It is not the first time that anti-government protests have turned deadly in Colombia. Most recently, last September, at least seven people were killed in protests triggered by the deadly tasering of a man by police in Bogotá.

(NEWCASTLE,U.K.) Court Report: A computing student who had almost 500 child sexual abuse images including two horrific videos of very young victims being assaulted has been sentenced to 12 months in prison suspended for two years #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.05: On 23 May 2020 National Crime Agency investigators arrested Miah at his home on suspicion of making/distributing and possessing indecent images of children. Officers searched his house and recovered Miah’s Samsung mobile phone, a memory stick, and a laptop:

#Paedophile student collected almost 500 sick pictures and videos: ‘Abid Miah, 21, from Fenham in Newcastle, admitted to three counts of making indecent images and was sentenced today at Newcastle Crown Court’ to 12 months suspended for 2-years and put on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Abid Miah custody image

Forensic examination revealed that the phone and laptop contained 493 indecent images of children. There were 177 category A images (the most serious), 157 category B and 159 category C. Many of the images were hidden in a secret album and an encrypted cloud storage app.

NCA investigators discovered two horrific category A videos: one of a four-year-old girl being sexually abused and another of another very young girl being tortured and sexually abused.

These videos were known to law enforcement and the children, who were abused abroad, were safeguarded.

After answering ‘no comment’ in interview and originally denying the offences Miah pleaded guilty in February this year.

Tracy Holbrook, NCA senior investigating officer, said: “Abid Miah possessed some truly horrific material, some of it was the most distressing my team have had to view in a long time: “ Miah tried to conceal his offending by using a fake email address and encrypted storage applications: “ Protecting children is one of the NCA’s biggest priorities and we will do everything we can to safeguard victims and stop offenders.”

He was also made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, made to forfeit his electronic devices and sent on a rehabilitation course.

Child protection charity The Lucy Faithfull Foundation runs the Stop It Now! helpline which offers confidential advice to anyone concerned about their own or someone else’s behaviour towards children.

(PARIS, France.) JUST IN: A dozen activists from the Extinction Rebellion ecological activism group chained themselves to the gates of France’s National Assembly in Paris ahead of the approval of new climate legislation on Tuesday #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.05: Ahead of the vote, Extinction Rebellion described the legislation as a “lie of the state” and called on lawmakers to reject its passage. Its objection to the bill centers on the removal of key measures before it was put before MPs. The group claims France’s industrial sector lobbied for the removal of many of the proposals, with only a few remaining:

In footage shared online, police officers could be seen stamping out the fires and dragging protesters away.

Some journalists were also reportedly pushed back by police.

Members of the National Assembly were also reported to have attended the demonstrations, including left-wing lawmaker Adrien Quatennens, who was filmed talking to police.

The draft legislation was approved on Tuesday at a first reading, but still needs the backing of the Senate.

It will then go back to the lower house, where it is likely to receive assent by President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist majority.

The bill includes a ban on short-haul domestic flights that can be taken by train, curbs on landlords renting out poorly insulated properties, and the prohibition of outdoor heaters on restaurant terraces.

Other proposed measures include forcing state-run schools to offer meat-free menus, vetoing the construction of new airports, and clamping down on the use of plastic in supermarket packaging.

The French government has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to its 1990 levels, but this target has been criticized as too low by environmental groups.

The executive director of Greenpeace France, Jean-Francois Julliard, said on Tuesday that the new draft law would “not be enough to effectively tackle global warming.”

(WASHINGTON,D.C.) JW REPORT: Announces emails show how the state agency successfully pressured Facebook to censor Judicial Watch’s post about Iowa’s management of its voter rolls #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.05: Included in these records were emails from Iowa state officials to representatives of Big Tech pressuring these companies to remove Judicial Watch’s posts:

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch announced today that it received 624 pages of records from the office of the Secretary of State of Iowa, revealing how state officials pressured social media companies (Twitter and Facebook) to censor posts about the 2020 election: Records Show Iowa State Officials Coordinated with Big Tech to Censor Election Posts & the records show communications between the Secretary of State’s office and representatives of Facebook and Twitter to Target Judicial Watch Posts.

Judicial Watch received the records as a result of a June 2020 Iowa Open Records lawsuit that was filed after the Iowa Secretary of State failed to comply with a February 2020 request for records and communications about a Judicial Watch report regarding the accuracy of the state’s voter registration rolls (Judicial Watch v. Iowa Secretary of State (No. 05771 EQCE085973)). Judicial Watch was represented by Iowa lawyer Alan R. Ostergren of Des Moines, Iowa.

The records show that officials in the Iowa Secretary of State office on multiple occasions contacted officials from Facebook and Twitter to try to have these companies remove Judicial Watch posts that raised concernsabout Iowa’s failure to maintain accurate election rolls.

On February 3, 2020, at 5:19 p.m., Kevin Hall, the communications director for the Iowa Secretary of State, wrote in a February 3, 2020, email to Facebook official Rachel Holland:

Rachel,

We’ve been playing whack-a-mole with this false story all day. Is there anything you can do to help: [likely https://www.facebook.com/JudicialWatch/posts/10157583458431943]

We’ve told them is fake. They have it PINNED to the top of their page.

Here’s our rebuttal: https://sos.iowa.gov/news/2020_02_02.html

Holland responded at 6:11p.m., writing:

Hi Kevin,

Circling back with an update regarding the content posted by Judicial Watch. Our third-party fact checkers have rated this content false, and we have applied a filter over the content warning users before they click to see it that the content has been rated false by independent fact checkers.

Please continue to report violating content to us by emailing reports@content.facebook.com, and copying me (RachelHolland@fb.com), as I will be on an airplane for the next couple hours. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this or any other matters.

A couple of hours later, Hall followed up, “Thank you! They have new posts up, doubling down on the false claims.”

And Holland responded, “Thanks for flagging- we’ve got a full team with eyes on this now and are applying the false filter to similar articles as well. I’ll send you an additional update shortly!”

That same day, Hall and Maria Benson, the director of communications at the National Association of Secretaries of State, both tried to convince Twitter to censor Judicial Watch’s posts but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Hall filed a report with Twitter, and Benson escalated it by looping in Kevin Kane from Twitter. On February 3, 2020, Benson wrote, “Iowa Secretary of State has reported the below election misinformation, but Twitter has declined to take it down. As you can see from facts the tweets are clearly wrong. I wanted to bring this to your attention to hopefully remedy the situation. I’ve cc’d Kevin Hall, their Communicators Director.”

Kane responded rejecting the request saying, “Thanks Maria – This was reviewed by our team and is not in violation of our election integrity policy as it does not suppress voter turnout or mislead people about when. where. or how to vote. I understand this is not the outcome you are seeking and appreciate you continuing to report Tweets to our team.”

In an email the next day, Hall wrote to Kane saying, “Facebook, thankfully, was helpful. I would suggest perhaps reviewing your policies at Twitter and putting them more in line with what Facebook is doing to counter election misinformation.”

After being rejected by Twitter, Benson emailed Brian Scully, an official at the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, writing on February 3, 2020:

Hey Brian,

Can you report this as well? Hannity is now retweeting and Twitter isn’t playing ball with us. I’ve cc’d Kevin Hall who you met Saturday. He’s IA SOS’s Communications Director. He’s been reporting and playing wack a mole by trying to reply to misleading tweets.

Scully responded promising to contact Twitter. “Sorry … been out of pocket a bit. Will reach out to Twitter. Let me know if you get something.”

“These records are yet another example of state officials conspiring with Big Tech to deny Americans their First Amendment rights,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “These records further show that Big Tech censorship is a government scandal: Iowa government officials worked with Facebook to remove posts they didn’t like, and Facebook bowed to this political pressure immediately. It should be disturbing to all Americans that government officials are working to censor speech they disagree with and that these behemoth companies often seem willing to roll over and censor free speech.”

Judicial Watch last week released records from the office of the Secretary of State of California revealing how state officials pressured social media companies (Twitter, Facebook, Google (YouTube)) to censor posts about the 2020 election. Included in these records were “misinformation briefings” emails that were compiled by communications firm SKDK, that lists Biden for President as their top client of 2020. The records show how the state agency successfully pressured YouTube to censor a Judicial Watch video concerning the vote by mail and a Judicial Watch lawsuit settlement about California voter roll clean up.

FEATURED BLOGGER REPORT: Croatian Communists Of Today: Hypocrites, Vultures and Yo-Yos – Croatia, the War, and the Future…..By Ina Vukic

#AceNewsReport: May.05: To All friends, followers and readers this is a fellow bloggers post and a great writer and will be the first one l shall be sharing on here on occasions please enjoy Editor

Yesterday, 1st May 2021 marked the 26th Anniversary of Military-Police Operation Flash! Croatia marked the 26th anniversary of Operation Flash in the town of Okucani today, honouring the Croatian police and army that liberated about 500 square kilometres of territory occupied by Serb aggressors in Western Slavonia. The operation was launched on May 1 and ended on May 3, 1995. In that short time the Croatian troops and police regained control of 500 square kilometres of land, including the main west-east motorway and the railway line leading to Eastern Slavonia. 42 Croatians were killed and 162 wounded.

Croatian Communists Of Today: Hypocrites, Vultures and Yo-Yos

Military Police Operation Flash – Croatia 1995: Source:

During the war, Okucani was the centre of the Serb rebellion and a staging area for their terrorist attacks in Western Slavonia. As their defeat progressed, the Serb aggressors organised and ordered the missiles attacks on Zagreb, Karlovac and Jastrebarsko. During the attacks against Zagreb on 2 May 1995, seven civilians were killed and 218 wounded. Serb rebel leader Milan Martic was sentenced by the UN tribunal ICTY to 35 years for war crimes committed during those missile attacks.

All the while, during the entire Croatian Homeland War today’s President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic hid, away from battle zones, from Croatian lines of defence and liberation, hid outside Croatia, wishing that Croatia never succeeds in its independence plight, in its defence from brutal aggression.

“We do this (passing unique law on veterans’ rights) because we are convinced that the Homeland War is the foundation of the Croatian state, that the freedom given to Croats by Croatian defenders is the most important value that we must nurture and protect and respect their sacrifice. Therefore, in the future we will do everything for the dignity of the Homeland War, for the respect of Croatian veterans and their families,” said Prime Minister Plenkovic in Okucani yesterday.

“On this day, now many years ago, Croatian heroes liberated this part of Croatia with determination, knowledge, patience and courage, and after the ‘Maslenica’ ’93 action they enabled a few months later in August ’95 that Croatia be finally merged into a whole and liberated. Those were a few good and a few brave people. It was about hundreds, maybe thousands of people. The rest of us were in Zrinjevac, Geneva, personnel services, and here, and on other battlefields in Croatia, a small number of people fought and to them eternally thank and glory to Croatian heroes,”  President Milanovic said in Okucani yesterday.

What a bunch of hypocrites! They could not care less about these Croatian heroes of the 1990’s who sacrificed their lives and many of whom lost their life or limb for democracy, for freedom from communist Yugoslavia. The legislation regarding war-veterans’ rights Plenkovic boasts about is a sham and is still leaving thousands of Croatia’s defenders without a veteran status and access to health and pension services.

The hypocrisy of both the Prime Minister and the President of Croatia lies in many purposeful “omissions” and the most important one is that they have done absolutely nothing in removing from the Historical Foundations (of independent Croatia) of the Constitution of the Republic Croatia this paragraph:

“- the establishment of the foundations of state sovereignty during the course of the Second World War, as expressed in the decision of the Territorial Antifascist Council of the National Liberation of Croatia (1943) in opposition to the proclamation of the Independent State of Croatia (1941), and then in the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Croatia (1947) and in all subsequent constitutions of the Socialist Republic of Croatia (1963-1990) …”

In essence the above paragraph that keeps or validates the communist regime and its mindset that prevents responsive legislation. Yugoslav communist regime did not, as they purport, liberate Croatia from Yugoslavia but kept it enslaved and oppressed within it. It murdered hundreds of thousands innocent Croats who actually fought for independence during WWII. It filled over a thousand of mass graves with Croatian patriot bodies. It falsified Croatia’s WWII history in order to promulgate hatred against freedom-loving Croats. Both Plenkovic and Milanovic promulgate the same lies about WWII independence fight in Croatia; they fail to even offer small amounts of funding for new research that is shedding light on the colossal lies their communist predecessors have heaped up against patriot Croats. They do, however, find funds to fund various NGO’s that continue justifying communist crimes and communist Yugoslavia!

In May 1991 almost 94% of Croatian voters voted to secede from communist Yugoslavia, which led to the declaration of independence. This also led to the bloodiest and most brutal escalation of Serb-led Yugoslav onslaught against Croatia. It was only a few years after the Homeland War ended that this war of defence was inserted into the Historical Foundations of independent Croatia of today. But the paragraph relating to Antifascists (communists) was not deleted! And therein lies the main reason why lustration did not occur!

Former communists in high positions, communist Yugoslavia operatives, retained positions to work against the very concept of an independent Croatia during peace time.

Prime Minister Plenkovic keeps rubbing salt on the Croatian independence fight wound, keeps insulting the very sacrifice Croatian defenders and people made for Croatian independence during 1990’s by embracing the 1990’s rebel Serb minority representatives in the Croatian Parliament as coalition partners in his government. “Thanks to Plenkovic” these Serbs, whose brothers, sisters, parents etc slaughtered Croatians during 1990’s, ethnically cleansed them from their homes, devastated and destroyed their properties, raped their women and girls…now dictated the political scene and government rudder that still tries to equate the aggressor with the victim!

President Milanovic continues to mimic a yoyo, just as he did when he was the Prime Minister some years ago. He cannot maintain stability of his political views nor his respect for the Homeland War and its true meaning. His statements confuse even the most prominent of political analysts, let alone ordinary citizens. One day he is full of praise of the communist regime and the next day he is full of praise for Croatian Homeland War heroes.

These vultures feed on the corpses of Croatian victims of Serb aggression while dining with the Serb aggressor and all the while their mind is communist red. With this political impasse and mindset, they seemingly retain some 26 to 30 % of voter body. They are the voters who most likely live in apartments and houses stolen by the Yugoslav communist regime from Croatian Jews and from Croatians who in WWII fought for Croatian independence. They are the voters whose families benefitted from the Yugoslav false economy that relied on foreign loans, rather than productivity at work. They are the voters who lift no fingers against widespread corruption and theft. They are the voters who look up to such a government and President for their continued sucking at a foreign purse – this time the EU purse – rather than develop new jobs within Croatia, to sustain independence.

It would be understatement to say that Croatia is now in a political crisis much more than ever in the past twenty years. The roots of this crisis are embedded in the fact that the meaning and values of the Croatia’s Homeland War and secession from communist Yugoslavia are simply not receiving due respect nor the deserved place in this nation of developing democracy. To illustrate this here is a translation of a poem published yesterday by Pater Ike Manduric, a leading Jesuit priest in Croatia in spiritual well-being of the community, a war veteran:

The enemy thought that Croatia was weak,

That there is no strength.

But it didn’t know that there waa love.

And love is strong.

Like death.

The enemy believed it had greater rights than others.

And that the Croatian home is not holy

That it is not important to God

That communism is God.

But it was all a lie.

Then the Flash exposed the lie

The occupier was struck by the truth:

Communism is a fraud and a lie

Croatia is as strong as life

The Croatian home is sacred.

Congratulations on the Flash!

And I want and invoke a new Flash

Which will shed light on the lies again

Because they started going crazy again

Again, some rely on lies.

And there will be a Flash, some new one, for this time, with new weapons, and by all the signs of the times it can be read yes, to the one who loves the Homeland.

I know that!

Congratulations on the FLASH!”

Scotland’s papers: Election polls and veterans ‘witch hunt’

The Metro reports on two polls that are indicating a majority for the SNP, but with only 43% of voters saying they want an independence referendum in the next five years: The Metro is looking at data from YouGov for The Times and Opinium for Sky News:

May.05, 2021: @acenewsservices

The SNP is facing its worst result since 2007 according to polling in The Scotsman. It writes that the party is set for a “shock result” that will leave it short of a majority, in the poll conducted by Savanta ComRes for the newspaper.

The Herald
The majority of Scots who support holding another independence referendum want it to be held after the pandemic is over, according to The Herald. It is among many of Scotland’s papers discussing election polls, the day before the Holyrood vote.

LONDON) GOVUK Press Release Statement Report: India’s fight against a surge in #coronavirus cases will be reinforced by new Government support announced by the Boris Johnson today #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – May.05: This is in addition to 200 ventilators, 495 oxygen concentrators and 3 oxygen generation units the UK announced we were sending to India last week:

#CoronavirusNewsDesk – NEW DELHI: India’s fight against a surge in #COVID19 cases will be reinforced by addtional UK Government support announced by the Prime Minister today with another 1,000 ventilators will be sent from the UK’s surplus supply to Indian hospitals after the first batch arrived to help the most severe cases as figure reaches 2-million infections on Tuesday’

  • The UK will send 1,000 more ventilators for use in India’s hospitals
  • The Chief Medical Officer, Chief Scientific Adviser and NHS staff have given help and advice to their Indian counterparts
  • Fresh assistance follows medical relief sent by the UK last week and a surge in support from the British people to India
  • On Tuesday the Prime Minister will hold a virtual meeting with Indian Prime Minister Modi to discuss deepening cooperation between the UK and India

Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty and Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance have also spoken to their Indian counterparts to provide advice, insight and expertise to the Indian healthcare system as it deals with the world’s worse surge in Covid levels.

NHS England is also establishing a clinical advisory group led by Chief People Officer Prerana Isaar to support India’s Covid response. The group will work with Indian institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to share experience on managing Covid outbreaks. The group will include researchers in public and global health, alongside nursing and other health professionals who have experience of the Indian healthcare system.

In a powerful demonstration of what Indian Prime Minister Modi has called the ‘living bridge’ between our countries, over the last week British people have come to the support of India in huge numbers. Businesses, civil society and the wider public have responded to appeals for help and launched funding drives.

This includes the British Asian Trust’s ‘Oxygen for India’ emergency appeal, which is raising funds for oxygen concentrators to be rapidly deployed to Indian hospitals. The BAT appeal, which has been personally backed by the Prince of Wales, has raised more than £1.5m in the last week.

Virgin Atlantic also flew 200 boxes of oxygen concentrators to Delhi on Saturday, after partnering with Khalsa Aid. Further cargo space will be given free of charge on 6 flights to India in the next week, in association with The Red Cross.

India has also provided support to the UK throughout the coronavirus pandemic. As the ‘pharmacy of the world’ the country has kept its borders open to supply the UK with vital medicine and PPE – exporting over 11 million face masks and 3 million packets of paracetamol over the course of 2020.

On Tuesday the Prime Minister will hold a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Modi to agree a huge range of commitments to deepen cooperation between the UK and India, including on fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

The terrible images we have seen in India in recent weeks are all the more powerful because of the close and enduring connection between the people of the UK and India.

I am deeply moved by the surge of support the British people have provided to the people of India and am pleased the UK Government has been able to play our part in providing life-saving assistance.

The UK will always be there for India in its time of need.

The world is safer and stronger because of work between the UK and India. The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, for example, was developed in the UK, is currently being produced in the millions by India’s Serum Institute and will be distributed to the world at cost through COVAX.

It is those shared values of openness and the pursuit of knowledge and scientific advancement for the betterment of our societies that lie at the heart of the relationship between the UK and India. During his call with Prime Minister Modi, the Prime Minister will emphasise the importance of working with India to promote our shared values.

India is the largest democracy in the world, a fellow Commonwealth country and in June Prime Minister Modi will travel to the UK to attend the G7 Summit as a guest – one of four world leaders invited to join the Summit of leading democracies.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said:

This support will help urgently meet some of India’s acute needs, particularly oxygen for patients. We are determined to help our Indian friends in their hour of need.

We need to all work together to defeat Covid-19. No one is safe until we are all safe.

A number of other UK charities are running their own appeals for India’s Covid crisis, including ActionAid, Action Against Hunger, the British Red Cross, CAFOD, CARE International, Christian Aid, Concern, Age UK, Islamic Relief, Oxfam, Plan UK, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision.

(LONDON) NCA REPORT: ALERT: Issued to U.K. Maritme Industry warning them that organised crime groups may target them to obtain small boats for people smugglers #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.05: This has led to a rise in demand for vessels to aid migrant Channel crossings, with demand likely to continue as weather conditions improve through spring and summer:

‘UK law enforcement detected in excess of eight thousand migrant arrivals throughout 2020’

#CoronavirusNewsDesk – NCA Issue a warning to maritime industry over organised crime links to small boats: ‘The alert warns that since global #COVID19 lockdown measures were imposed in March 2020 the number of migrants attempting to enter the UK using small boats has increased significantly’

Seized boats

Organised crime groups are known to target legitimate sellers of vessels and equipment such as outboard motors and life jackets, both in person and online. There are also incidents recorded of boats and equipment being stolen: The NCA have conducted a number of operations targeting those who supply boats to people smugglers, but the Agency is asking those in the industry to report concerns or suspicious activity relating to the purchase of boat equipment:

NCA Head of Organised Immigration Crime Operations, Miles Bonfield, said: “Today we are directly appealing to those within the marine and maritime industries to help us stop those involved in organised people smuggling: “ Crossing the channel in vessels like these is extremely dangerous and life threatening – but the organised crime groups involved don’t care about safety or welfare, they just see migrants as a commodity to be exploited: “ We’re already working closely with a range of partners in the UK and on the continent to target the supply of these vessels, but we are now asking that the UK industry helps us and report any suspicions they may have.”

The NCA alert outlines a number of examples of potentially suspicious activity, including:

  • Cash being used in large sums to make payment;
  • Unusual combination of boats and equipment in one transaction;
  • Enquiries about bulk purchase of equipment i.e. life jackets;
  • Repeat purchasing of boats and/or equipment from the same retailer;
  • Lack of concern about the condition of the boat or equipment being purchased, or an indication that it may not be for the buyers’ use;
  • Customers wanting to complete their transaction and collection as quickly as possible.
  • Online buyers travelling to collect the boat and/or avoiding providing a fixed delivery address.

Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, the trade association for the UK leisure, superyacht and small commercial marine industry, commented: “ We are pleased to be working with the NCA to help raise awareness of this concerning issue and to reduce criminal activity. The NCA plays a key role in supporting the security and safety of the marine industry, and today’s warning about organised crime linked to small boats in particular is ultimately a safety issue and one that British Marine and our members take very seriously.

“The UK leisure marine industry must always play it’s part and I am confident that British Marine members will take the lead in this area and share the warning and ‘red flags’ to be mindful of within their businesses.”

Miles Bonfield added: “ Essentially we want people to follow their gut feeling. They know their industry and their customers well. If they sense something isn’t quite right or seems unusual, then please report it to the charity Crimestoppers, either by phone on 0800 555 111 or online. You will remain anonymous.”

Following a number of attempted thefts boat and marine equipment owners are also being asked to pay particular attention to security guidelines, ensuring vessels and equipment are secured accordingly: They can also assist by being vigilant and reporting any strange activity or behaviour, and ensure thefts are promptly reported, particularly vessels or engines.

Those contacting Crimestoppers with information should quote the alert reference ‘0647-OIC’.
Anyone who lives or works around our coastline, marinas, ports or waterways and witnesses something they believe to be suspicious can always call the police on 101, quoting Project KRAKEN, or visit gov.uk/report-border-crime.

(LONDON) GOVUK Press Release Statement Report: More than 34 million people have had at least one jab while 15 million have had both doses of the vaccine #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – May.05: Health services across the UK administered a total of 50,089,549 million vaccines between 8 December 2020 and 2 May 2021, including 34 million people with their first dose and 15 million with their second:

#CoronavirusNewsDesk – Over 50 million doses of the #COVID19 vaccine have been administered in the UK, with over a quarter of adults having received both doses’

  • Over 50 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered
  • Over 29% of all UK adults have received the strongest possible protection

Data from Public Health England (PHE)’s real-world study shows the vaccines are already having a significant impact in the UK, reducing hospitalisations and saving more than 10,000 lives in England alone by the end of March.

The government remains on track to offer a jab to all adults by the end of July.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said:

Now we’ve delivered the 50 millionth jab, and 29.4% of the adult population have had the strongest possible protection of 2 doses, we have hit yet another incredible milestone in our vaccination programme.

The vaccine is our way out of this pandemic and the rollout had been a huge national effort. I want to pay tribute to the heroic NHS staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to deliver vaccines in every corner of the United Kingdom at a phenomenal pace.

We are on track to offer a jab to all adults by the end of July but our work is not over yet. We are now inviting everyone over 40 to get their jab. I had mine last week – it’s simple and easy and I encourage everyone else who is eligible to get the jab.

Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi said:

The UK’s vaccination programme has been a huge success so far with more than 50 million doses administered – a fantastic achievement.

We have one of the highest uptake rates in the world and over 15 million people have now received 2 doses and maximum protection from this dreadful virus.

Every jab brings us one step closer to putting this pandemic behind us. I urge everyone to come forward as soon as they are eligible – the vaccine is safe, effective and could save your life.

An extra 60 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine have been secured by the UK government to help support preparations for the booster COVID-19 vaccination programme from the autumn, if clinically needed.

All vaccines being used in the UK have undergone robust clinical trials and have met the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s strict standards of safety, effectiveness and quality.

Approved vaccines are available from thousands of NHS vaccine centres, GP practices and pharmacies. Around 98% of people live within 10 miles of a vaccination centre in England and vaccinations are taking place at sites including mosques, community centres and football stadiums.
