Court Report: Caruana Galizia Case: Judgement by Justice Miriam Hayman will be delivered on Monday: Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech suspected of involvement in the killing of a journalist went to court on Friday and accused the prime minister’s right-hand man of being implicated in the plot #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Nov.30: Yorgen Fenech, who is on police bail, also asked the court in Valetta to order the removal of Inspector Keith Arnaud, the chief investigator in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia: Who was the campaigning journalist who investigated and exposed corruption, was blown up by a car bomb in October 2017. The case has developed into a political crisis for the government of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat who reportedly stepped down from office on Friday: Our full report here: https://acenewsservices.com/2019/11/29/valetta-malta-latest-muscat-who-is-alleged-to-have-have-received-payments-from-panama-owned-companies-b-y-fenechs-dubai-based-17-black-firm-today-he-is-reported-to-have-travelled-to-the/

Daphne Caruana Galizia.

That crook Schembri was in court today, pleading that he is not a crook

Former Opposition leader Simon Busuttil testified in court this morning, as did the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, that crook Keith Schembri, in the case he himself brought against Dr Busuttil for libel damages.

Mr Schembri is claiming that he is not corrupt, despite moving to set up a secret company in Panama along with favourite minister Konrad Mizzi and Mr Egrant just days after Labour won the general election in 2013, sheltering it in a top-secret trust in New Zealand, then hunting round the world for a shady bank that would take them as clients.

(In the end they solved the problem by setting up a shady bank in Malta, hiding in plain sight.)

His government salary is just peanuts to him, Mr Schembri said, because he has retained his companies and his shares and that is where he makes his money. But the way he is using his government influence to benefit his private business in Malta is entirely a separate corruption/trading in influence issue and is not an argument in his defence.

He also said that he was unable to reply to the corruption accusations in the past two years – but it hasn’t been two years – because of a “medical condition”. Would this be the medical condition that they claimed he didn’t have, when the Prime Minister’s chief of staff disappeared for months, I wondered why, found out, and then reported on it?

There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate.

Lawyers for Fenech alleged that Schembri, who was Joseph Muscat’s chief of staff until he resigned on Tuesday, has for the last two years leaked secret details of the probe to Fenech: The lawyers told the court that audio recordings seized by police proved Fenech was privy to secret blow-by-blow details of Arnaud’s inquiries.

Shaven-headed Fenech, who is currently on police bail, appeared in court flanked by his two lawyers but with no police escort, in a grey pin-striped suit and dark glasses, looking exhausted but calm: Fenechs lawyer Marion Camillieri said the recording were recovered from Melvin Theuma: He was granted an official pardon this week in return for testifying that he acted as the middleman in passing a contract to three people already indicted for planting the bomb that killed Caruana Galizia.

Camillieri told the court the evidence, which included a photo of Theuma in Schembri’s office, proved his involvement, despite the fact that Schembri was released on Thursday evening by police after being held since Tuesday morning: “We are saying that although there is a lot of evidence against Keith Schembri…we have a recordings, a contract. And yet it was declared that he is no longer a person of interest,” she said.

Camilieri said Inspector Arnaud was an associate of Schembri who had briefed him constantly on the case: She said Schembri organised a job for Arnaud’s wife, an accusation denied by the Maltese government and police: “How can justice be done by Yorgen Fenech when we know that this person had a close relationship with the person investigating,” Camillieri said.

Responding for the government, Victoria Buttigieg said it would be damaging to suspect Arnaud who “knows the case inside out” His wife got no favours from Schembri and a suspect cannot dictate how an investigation is carried out. Buttigieg said……….“The dynamics of investigation are at the absolute discretion of the police,” she said.

No country allowed a suspect to choose who investigated the case: She denied Arnaud’s wife had been handpicked for a government job.

Reporters were excluded from part of the government’s case to avoid disclosure of further sensitive details:

(PARIS, France.) JUST IN: #BlackFriday being declared as ‘ Racist ‘ by some lawmakers and #ClimateChange Activists want it called #GreenFriday as consumers purchase too much …#AceNewsDesk says …To o some its the only way to why can afford what they NEED and not always what they WANT

#AceNewsReport – Nov.29: Activists across have staged Black Friday protests against Amazon, decrying consumerism and its impact on the environment: Dozens of protesters gathered outside the company’s French headquarters in Clichy, north of Paris.

Protesters also tried to blockade a shopping centre in Paris and a logistics centre near the eastern city of Lyon: In video from Lyon riot police can be seen dragging activists away.

The protests aim to disrupt Black Friday, a discount shopping day that activists have blamed for environmental damage: In response, Amazon told the BBC it respected the right to protest but disagreed with “the actions of these individuals”.

Why did the activists target Amazon?

Environmentalists have accused Amazon of accelerating climate change through its rapid delivery services, which they say contribute to greenhouse gases emissions: Amazon ships around 10 billion packages per year, according to Reuters news agency……………….To mitigate its impact on the climate, the US e-commerce company pledged to go net carbon neutral by 2040 by investing in electric delivery vans, among other initiatives.

Similar protests against Amazon erupted in other European countries, including Germany, where workers from six distribution centres staged a walkout over pay and conditions: The union Verdi, which called the strike, said its members’ hard work could not be bought for “knock-down prices”.

Some French lawmakers want to ban Black Friday because of its environmental impact, and Environment Minister Elisabeth Borne has warned against the “consumption frenzy” linked to the event: The shopping day began in the US on the Friday after Thanksgiving but in recent years spread to other countries.

(BAHRAIN) Court Report: Sentences five activists to life imprison on Friday for ‘ Cash Machine Raid in 2018-2019 together with Joining #IslamicState ‘ on 2018-2019 according to Bahrain Mirror #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Nov.29: A court in Bahrain has sentenced five activists to life imprisonment after finding them guilty of joining a terrorist group and “blasting open cash machines in vital areas between 2018 and 2019”, according to the Bahrain Mirror
A court in Bahrain, 29 November 2019 [Twitter]Bahrain’s Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs, 29 November 2019 [Twitter] November 29, 2019 at 3:07 pm

The First High Criminal Court sentenced five defendants to life imprisonment and fined them 500 dinars ($1,326) each: Another was jailed for five years and fined the same amount, reported Akhbar Al-Khaleej.

“ Chief of Terror Crime Prosecution, Advocate-General Chancellor Ahmed Al Hammadi confirmed that the verdicts against the six suspects”

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011. They are demanding that the Al Khalifa regime relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.

The authorities have clamped down on any sign of dissent, on 14 March 2011, troops from Gulf neighbours Saudi Arabia and the UAE were deployed to assist Manama in its crackdown: Scores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others have sustained injuries or have been detained.

On 5 March 2017: Bahrain’s parliament approved the trial of civilians in military tribunals in a measure blasted by human rights campaigners as being tantamount to imposition of an undeclared martial law countrywide.

Amnesty International reports that “Bahrain has used draconian legislation to target protesters and other critics of the government: Since 2011, more than 800 people have been stripped of their nationalities: Of those, 115 lost their citizenship following a ludicrous mass trial that relied on confessions extracted under torture.”

(LONDON) #GE2019 Labour would rewrite ‘ Capitalism & Economy ‘ with a new blueprint of ‘ Business Conduct & Labour Rights ‘ but at what cost to British taxpayers and are we heading for a ‘ Tax & Borrow ‘ ‘ Boom & Bust ‘ EU-linked economy if they win the e lection as polls show they are closing in on Tories: Here’s McDonnells’ Plan #AceNewsDesk reports

#AceNewsReport – Nov.27: John McDonnell has promised that a Labour government would “rewrite the rules of our economy” as he announced proposed reforms to business regulation that he said would help workers “take back control” In a speech that made a series of attacks on corporate excess, the shadow chancellor declined to confirm that Labour is planning a windfall tax on oil and gas companies – a policy Labour had been seriously considering in recent days.

But he outlined a series of far-reaching changes to the “regulatory architecture” that governs how Britain’s businesses can behave: “We aim to take on the excesses of the shareholder model and lay some of the foundations of a stakeholder economy,” he said. “Today’s business model of shareholder domination is increasingly proving to be incompatible with not just the fair and respectful treatment of workers but also with the responsibilities associated with any organisation operating within a democracy.”

He said a Labour government would establish a series of powerful commissions to oversee corporate behaviour; An overarching business commission would contain within it three separate watchdogs – a companies commission, a finance commission, and an enforcement commission.

Answering questions afterwards, McDonnell confirmed he would like banks to be included in the new system, in what could be the biggest shake-up of financial regulation since 1997 when Gordon Brown made the Bank of England independent: “My own view is that I would like to see banking within it,” he said.

McDonnell outlined a series of perceived faults with the way shareholder capitalism worked, including short-termism, excessive executive pay, the lack of bargaining power for workers and the “cartel” behaviour of the big four accounting firms: He said Labour would force the big four – Ernst and Young, Deloitte, KPMG and PwC – to separate their audit and non-audit businesses. This would be aimed at avoiding the conflicts of interest he claimed could arise when the firms were selling consultancy services to the same company whose accounts they were meant to be casting a sceptical eye over.

McDonnell also said a Labour government would establish a “statutory auditor” to carry out its own checks on companies: “Its purpose will be to conduct real-time audits of banks, building societies, credit unions, insurers and major investment firms. The auditor will not be dependent on fees from client companies and as a result could become independent and robust,” he said.

He said Labour would rewrite the Companies Act to ensure firms were responsible to employees and customers as well as their shareholders, and insist that one-third of board members were staff: Larger companies would also be given the option to create a German-style two-tier board structure, with a separate supervisory board having oversight over executives.

McDonnell confirmed that Labour would force large companies to establish an “inclusive ownership fund”, in which they would be obliged to set aside up to 10% of their shares for employees, who would then be entitled to receive dividends worth up to £500: The policies have been drawn up with the help of academics including the accounting expert Prem Sikka.

Business groups responded warily to McDonnell’s speech: The British Chambers of Commerce warned against a “one size fits all” approach: The BCC’s co-executive director Claire Walker said: “It’s one thing to support employee ownership, stronger corporate governance and a transition to a greener economy, which have had positive impacts on many firms. But it would be misguided to impose a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach.

“Getting our economy moving requires serious investment in skills, infrastructure and a reduction in business costs. But extensive government interference in ownership and governance could deter investors and damage confidence.”
