(GENEVA) #Coronavirus Report: #WHO Report: With Europe already suffering a second wave of #COVID19 infections, WHO envoy David Nabarro has warned that the region could see another spike in infections next year in an interview on Saturday with Swiss newspaper #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Nov.22: In an interview on Saturday with Swiss newspaper Solothurner Zeitung, Nabarro said that European governments failed to build up the “necessary infrastructure” to keep the virus under control after the first wave of infections this spring:

#Coronavirus Report: #WHO Covid envoy warns of third wave of virus in Europe next spring

David Nabarro Nabarro addresses the media on World Health Organization (WHO)’s health emergency preparedness and response capacities in Geneva, Switzerland, 31 July 2015. At the time, Nabarro was the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Ebola

A World Health Organization (WHO) envoy warned that Europe could face a third wave of infections in early 2021 if governments do not implement preventive measures missing this summer: Speaking to Swiss newspapers, David Nabarro said that infections could boom again if countries repeat what he said was a failure to prevent the second wave.

Now we have the second wave. If they don’t build the necessary infrastructure, we’ll have a third wave early next year.

Infections are once again surging throughout Europe, after a lull this summer: France and Germany recorded some 33,000 new cases combined on Saturday, while the UK reported nearly 20,000 cases on the same day, and Spain announced more than 15,000 on Friday. Deaths remain proportionally lower throughout Europe than during the first wave, however:

Despite Nabarro’s stark prediction, the WHO has cautioned against responding too heavy-handedly to the #pandemic In a briefing on Thursday, the organization’s European director, Hans Kluge, called for “systematic and general mask-wearing” and “strict controls on social gatherings,” but described national lockdowns as a “last resort” policy:

(BIRMINGHAM, U.K.) WM Police Report: Officers have recovered a huge haul of stolen toys, collectibles and old comics worth over half-a-million pounds: They retrieved the items while leading an investigation into large-scale burglaries in the Black Country and Cheshire which are believed to be linked

#AceNewsReport – Nov.22: They executed a series of raids which resulted in tens of thousands of boxes filled with stolen goods such as Marvel, Star Wars, Transformers and other action figures being found: There were Game of Thrones souvenirs, board games, imported collectibles from across the globe and comics dating back decades which were also recovered:

WMP Officers have recovered a huge haul of stolen goods while leading an investgation into large-scale burglaries in the Black Country & Cheshire believed to be linked …

22nd November 2020

wmp

They had been stolen from an industrial unit in Wolverhampton – where they were being stored by an online business which trades worldwide – in September; and also an associated distributor’s warehouse in Runcorn in October: We acted on information and found around £200,000 worth of stock inside large trailers on a storage yard in Highfields Road, Bilston, last month:

wmp

We then received further intelligence about some of the other stolen collectibles being sold online which resulted in us leading a raid on a business unit in Yorkshire: It saw us discover thousands more stolen goods and led to a 42-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue: We also retrieved more items taken from the Wolverhampton unit following a warrant an address in Wednesfield last week: They have now all been returned to their rightful owners, helping to secure the future of the business which trades in the likes of action figures, collectibles and comics.

DC Emily-Jane Parker, from force CID, said: “We’ve managed to seize and return a huge haul of stolen goods taken during the burglaries: “We retrieved tens of thousands of boxes packed full of toys and collectibles which would have made hundreds of thousands of pounds if all sold on: “We believe these were stolen as part of an organised operation which impacted upon not only the West Midlands, but elsewhere in the country: “We know the financial and emotional impact of being a burglary victim and we’re pleased to have recovered such a substantial amount of ‘hot property.’………….”The business owners told us it has returned their livelihoods and we’re humbled to have been able to do so – especially given the impact of the pandemic: “But we won’t let up until we catch and charge those responsible and our enquiries are very much ongoing.”

(LONDON) Press Release Statement Report: PM Johnson Announces: The UK and Canada have locked in their existi ng trading relationship, worth £20 billion, and agreed to begin negotiating a new more ambitious trade deal as early as next year after the transition period ends #AceFinanceDesk report

#AceFinanceReport – Nov.22: On a video call today (21st November), Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, joined by International Trade Secretary Liz Truss and her Canadian counterpart, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Mary Ng agreed an ‘agreement in principle’ to roll over current EU-Canada trading arrangements and begin negotiations on a new, bespoke UK-Canada trade deal in 2021: Today’s agreement to rollover provisions of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) gives certainty for UK businesses exporting goods and services to Canada worth £11.4 billion. It will support the British automotive manufacturing and food and drink industries which between them provide jobs for more than half a million people across the UK:

UK secures vital rollover trade deal with Canada and agrees to start negotiating more advanced deal next year

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss has today secured an agreement for a continuity trade deal with “friend and ally” Canada.

Department for International Trade

Overall, an estimated £42 million tariff burden on UK exports has been saved: The benefits locked in under the agreement reached today include:

  • Future zero tariffs on UK car exports to Canada, which were worth £757 million last year, supporting factories and jobs in our communities. Without this agreement, Canada’s standard tariffs on cars of 6.1% would apply.
  • Tariff-free trade on 98% of goods that can be exported to Canada including beef, fish and seafood and soft drinks.
  • UK producers will continue to benefit from zero tariffs on many agricultural and seafood exports including chocolate, confectionary, fruit and vegetables, bread, pastries and fish. Last year the UK exported £344m worth of agri-food goods to Canada.
  • Without the continuity agreement, Canadian food products such as maple syrup, biscuits and salmon could have been more expensive for British consumers as they would face taxes of up to 8% when entering the UK under the UK Global Tariff.

The deal secured today provides the foundation for both countries to negotiate a new trade deal, that will improve on the existing EU-Canada agreement: It will be tailored for the British economy with the potential to go further in new areas like digital trade, women’s economic empowerment and the environment:

Today’s announcement means that it in under two years, the UK government has agreed trade deals with 53 countries accounting for £164bn of UK bilateral trade: It also takes us one step closer to accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), of which Canada is a member. CPTPP is a key part of our trade negotiations programme, helping businesses secure more opportunities in 11 key Pacific markets:

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

This is a fantastic agreement for Britain which secures transatlantic trade with one of our closest allies. British businesses export everything from electric cars to sparkling wine to Canada, and today’s deal will ensure that trade goes from strength to strength.

Our negotiators have been working flat out to secure trade deals for the UK, and from as early next year we have agreed to start work on a new, bespoke trade deal with Canada that will go even further in meeting the needs of our economy.

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said:

Today’s agreement underpins £20 billion worth of trade and locks in certainty for the thousands of jobs. We look forward to striking a new more ambitious deal next year with the aim of creating more opportunities for businesses and improving the lives of people across the country.

The UK is bonded by history, culture and transatlantic trade with our friends and allies in Canada, and we want to continue to build partnerships around the world that support our shared values of freedom and democracy, and today marks another step towards membership of a group of like-minded nations- the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

UK Government Minister for Scotland David Duguid said:

This is great news for trade, paving the way for a new UK-Canada trade deal in the future.

The agreement will deliver a massive boost for Scottish businesses. Last year, 814 businesses in Scotland exported goods to Canada, worth £411 million, and we can look forward to this increasing in the years ahead.

Scotland’s world-famous products, including Scotch beef, Scotch Whisky, Scottish salmon and other seafood are set to benefit from this agreement.

This deal shows that huge opportunities lie ahead as we leave the EU.

Today’s agreement also guarantees tariff-free access to the Canadian market for British wine and spirits and ensures that the UK and Canada can continue to work towards recognising each other’s qualifications in areas including accountancy, architecture and law: All nations and regions will benefit from preferential access to Canadian markets: For example, together the West Midlands and North West regions exported over £1.2 billion worth of goods to Canada last year, while Scotland and Northern Ireland collectively exported £1 billion:

Josh Hardie, acting Director-General of the CBI said:

Agreeing a deal with Canada that secures continuity of trade is great news for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.

Whether it’s manufacturers still sending their products between the two counties tariff-free, or UK firms being able to sell their services into the Canadian market, this is a real milestone.

The signing of this deal can now lay the foundations for an even deeper trade agreement, tailored to both economies. Business stands ready to work with government to achieve that goal and to promote opportunities with Canada.   Miles Beale, Chief Executive of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, said:

This is a good result for the UK wine and spirit industry. Canada is an important market that is growing for UK exporters, particularly our small and medium sized gin and English wine exporters.

This agreement doesn’t just confirm the continued removal of tariffs, but gives us some extra footing and mechanisms to engage with the Canadians on their complex alcohol market, which is controlled at a provincial level. It should allow UK businesses to be more competitive in the Canadian Liquor Board system and that’s a positive step in helping us to grow in the market.

British supercar maker McLaren Automotive, the largest part of luxury automotive, motorsport and technology company McLaren Group, sold its first car in Canada in 2012: Now with retailers in major Canadian cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver the brand, represented by Pfaff Automotive, has seen a four-fold growth in sales over the past eight years: Combining leading-edge technology that enhances owner experience and hand-built personalised luxury, McLaren is poised to sell its 1,000th supercar in Canada before the end of the year.

Tony Joseph, Regional Director for The Americas, McLaren Automotive said:

As an innovative British-based bespoke manufacturing business exporting to meet a growing demand for McLaren’s supercars among Canadian buyers, today’s news that the UK and Canada have secured a continuity trade agreement is welcomed. It provides added certainty and continuity both for us and our Canadian retail partners, customers and employees as we continue to build our presence in this key global market.

FSB National Chairman Mike Cherry said:

There was always a danger that the end of the transition period would mean losing wider international market access that we enjoyed as part of EU membership. So it’s really encouraging to see new trade deals secured with trading partners like Canada, long since seen as a crucial market by small firms. The fact that this new agreement upholds the small business chapter that was previously in place is very welcome. We look forward to such chapters being at the centre of all future UK trade deals.

The UK-Canada Trade Continuity Agreement will be subject to final legal checks before it is formally signed.

Additional Notes:

  • The agreement will be formally signed once it has been subject to formal checks.
  • Total trade between the UK and Canada was worth £19.9 billion in the four quarters to end of Q1 2020
  • The UK will continue to be covered by the EU-Canada FTA during the transition period. This agreement will come into effect on 1 January 2021.

(WORLDWIDE) #ClimateChange Scientific American Report: Microbes hidden in permafrost layers may still contain ancient microbes, Pleistocene megafauna and even buried smallpox victims as the earth is warming including millions of years of carbon are buried that could be released into the air according to Scientific American #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsRepor – Nov.21: Permafrost covers 24 percent of the Earth’s land surface, and the soil constituents vary with local geology: Arctic lands offer unexplored microbial biodiversity and microbial feedbacks, including the release of carbon to the atmosphere. In some locations, hundreds of millions of years’ worth of carbon is buried:

The layers may still contain ancient frozen microbes, Pleistocene megafauna and even buried smallpox victims: As the permafrost thaws with increasing rapidity, scientists’ emerging challenge is to discover and identify the microbes, bacteria and viruses that may be stirring. Some of these microbes are known to scientists. Methanogenic Archaea, for example metabolize soil carbon to release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Other permafrost microbes (methanotrophs) consume methane. The balance between these microbes plays a critical role in determining future climate warming. Others are known but have unpredictable behavior after release……

It is clear that the warmer we make the Arctic, the weirder it will get, as temperatures at the surface become more extreme and thawing deepens: With the coalescence of microbes reawakening from the deep and surface conditions unprecedented in human history, it is challenging to assess risks accurately without improved Arctic microbial datasets. We should pay attention to both known unknowns, such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and unknown unknowns, including the potential risks from the resurrection of ancient and poorly described viral genomes from Arctic ice by synthetic biologists:

For all of these reasons, we must come up with guidelines for future Arctic research. As travel through the region increases, the likelihood of pathogen export and import rises as well: The planetary protection guidelines that space agencies follow to prevent interplanetary contamination can provide a framework for how microbial investigation can safely continue. Biosurveillance measures must be put into place to protect communities in the Arctic and beyond. As the Arctic continues to transform, one thing is clear: as climate change warms this microbial repository during the 21st century, the full range of consequences is yet to be told:

RT World News https://ift.tt/2IZm7Xq ….A dramatic chase involving the inmates and the police ended in tragedy: A group of fugitives hijacked a Dacia car from its driver in an attempt to lose the cops, but the man behind the wheel lost control of the vehicle and crashed the packed car into a tree. (PARIS, France.) JUST IN: The Eiffel Tower was the scene of the latest unrest in the capital directed at the law, which makes it illegal for the public and journalists to share images of police officers #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.21: The rally, which went on amid a heightened police presence at the Trocadero Square near the Eiffel Tower, was organized by Reporters without Borders, Amnesty International as well as other human rights groups and journalist unions. Opponents of the Global Security Bill insist that it’s a major infringement on the freedom of the press: Activists carried banners decrying the law, chanted slogans, while also singing La Marseillaise, the French national anthem. Some in the crowd sported yellow vests, a symbol of the larger protest movement against economic injustice across France:

The rally was staged despite a national lockdown and a ban on public gatherings, in an attempt to stem a second wave of the coronavirus. Many demonstrators neglected social distancing rules and the government’s order to wear face masks:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The rally went on peacefully for hours, but tensions began rising after dark when some demonstrators started setting trash bins on fire: The protesters threw bottles and other objects at riot police, an RT France correspondent reported from the scene:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The police initially refrained from action, but then deployed a water cannon and to disperse the crowd.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Smaller protests against the law were also held in Marseille, Lille, Montpellier and other French cities on the day.

The Global Security Bill, which is pushed forward by the government of President Emmanuel Macron, among other things criminalizes the distribution of images of law enforcers by both the public and the media. A violation could carry a one-year prison sentence or a €45,000 fine.

The legislation got the greenlit from the National Assembly on Friday and is expected to be approved by the Senate next week.

In response to the criticism, Prime Minister, Jean Castex, assured that the bill “won’t impede the freedom of information,” but will only focus on images shared with “clear” intent to harm a police officer.

Emmanuel Macron has proposed controversial legislation that would ban the publication of pictures of police officers on duty

French move to outlaw images of police at work is a clumsy attempt to hide the everyday brutality that passes as law enforcement

Videos of police using excessive force against demonstrators and criminal suspects have recently caused a vast public outcry in France: The most vivid incident was the death of Paris man, Cédric Chouviat, in January, which strongly resembled what happened to George Floyd in the US: Chouviat, a 42-year-old father of five, was filmed shouting “I’m suffocating” as he was held down by seven officers. The probe into the case saw three officers charged with manslaughter:

(BERLIN, Germany.) JUST IN: Friday marks 75th Anniversay of start of Nuremberg Trials Antifa Activists rallied in capital to decry #COVID19 sceptics’ tactics as counter-protest comes amid demonstrations over a controversial law that gives the government more powers to fight the virus #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.21: Hundreds of Antifa members marched through the German capital on Friday night, holding banners denouncing “Corona deniers and Nazi pigs” as they chanted slogans. The column of left-wing protesters was closely supervised by police, and no violence was reported during the event:

Demonstrators are sprayed with a water cannon during a protest against the government's coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions, next to the Brandenburger Gate in Berlin, November, 18, 2020.

As the German lockdown movement continues to grow, wild claims of Nazi-era laws and Anne Frank comparisons undermine its efforts

While the demonstrators expressed their anger with “conspiracy believers,” protests of those furious at the government didn’t stop. Critics are decrying a new Infection Protection Law, which gives authorities the ability to swiftly impose lockdowns and other restrictive measures: Some are even comparing the law to Nazi-era dictates that enabled Adolf Hitler’s rise to power:

https://cdnv.rt.com/files/2020.11/5fb8d0012030275ed502bf3a.mp4

On Friday, which marked the 75th anniversary of the start of the Nazi war crime tribunals, a group of demonstrators gathered at the Nuremberg Trials Memorial to denounce the new law; Footage from RT’s Ruptly video agency shows protesters gathered around candles shaped like a peace sign, as some carried placards warning of the dangers of government overreach. The demonstration coincided with a ceremony inside the court which was attended by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier;

https://cdnv.rt.com/files/2020.11/5fb8eb60203027608e6bd46c.mp4

Earlier this week thousands of protesters against the Infection Protection Law faced off with police in Berlin. Water cannon were deployed to disperse the crowd, and over 100 people were detained.

This Saturday, both anti-lockdown demonstrations and counter-protests are planned in the city of Leipzig, in Eastern Germany: Germany isn’t the only country to see pushback against its coronavirus measures. Anti-lockdown protests have been held regularly in London, while similar demonstrations have been seen in Italy and other parts of Europe.

Man jailed for 6yrs plus 3yrs on licence for ‘ terrorism offences ‘ at Old Bailey on Fri.20: Nov: 2020 after MET Counter Terrorism Investigation

Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “I am very pleased with this sentence. Shehroz Iqbal is a volatile man with an extremist mind-set who has now been sentenced to a lengthy time in prison: “Thanks to the vigilance of Counter Terrorism officers we identified Iqbal’s illegal activity and were able to prevent him from carrying out something far more harmful: “Every day the national counter terrorism police network is fighting terrorism. Detectives from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command arrested Iqbal after they found he had shared a Daesh propaganda video on his open Facebook page: They carried out a thorough investigation and Iqbal was arrested on 6 April: He was subsequently charged the next day with dissemination of terrorist material, and taken into custody. He first appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 8 April: In the meantime, ongoing analysis of Iqbal’s media devices by detectives found that he had also uploaded to a WhatsApp group footage of himself in central London with words which included, ‘Attack, Attack’ – the inference being Iqbal was encouraging others to carry out an attack at various locations: Following this discovery, a further indictment of encouragement of terrorism was added on 27 July when he appeared at the Old Bailey for a pre-trial hearing.

(USA) E-scooters Report: As number of crashes have risen as people emerge out of ‘ lockdown ‘ since the rise in sales has prompted ‘ environmentally friendly travel ‘ a Swedish company will integrated Luna’s computer vision system into 50 of its e-scooters #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.20: Last year, electric scooters were booming in big cities across the United States and other countries as urbanites embraced a relatively novel way of getting around town. The rentable, battery-boosted rides also brought a rising number of pedestrian-involved crashes as some riders illegally zipped down sidewalks and darted around traffic before the craze was interrupted by the #pandemic

Met provides update on latest advice for using e-scooters in London:

Downtowns became ghost towns when businesses told workers to stay home, and e-scooter business slowed, dropping as much as 70 percent: As people reemerge from shutdowns, wary of congested trains and buses, the micromobility industry may enjoy a post-pandemic renaissance, analysts say. People are buying more of the two-wheelers in some markets. China-based Niu saw sales rise sales 6.3 percent internationally as cities such as Boston, New York and Minneapolis expanded bike lanes to encourage social distancing, setting the framework for a potential e-scooter comeback:

By the time the novel coronavirus is in the rearview mirror, riders could be encountering a new type of e-scooter, one that picks up safety tools from modern cars. Last week, micromobility companies Luna and Voi Technology came together to kick off a test fleet of e-scooters with pedestrian detection: The test scooters are deployed in Northampton, England. Luna, a Dublin-based start-up, developed the system of cameras and sensors that it says will enable the scooters to learn and respond to their environments. Voi, a Swedish e-scooter manufacturer, integrated Luna’s computer vision system into 50 of its e-scooters. […]

The immediate goal for Voi and Luna is to have the devices detect people and objects in a scooter’s path, even if the rider doesn’t see them: The idea is to make scooter users and pedestrians feel safe as they navigate busy streets, which is the most significant issue plaguing cities with legalized shared e-scooters, according to Fredrik Hjelm, CEO of Voi…..
