(PLYMOUTH, U.K.) NCA/AFP REPORT: The men – one Briton from Stockton on Tees, County Durham & five Nicaraguans – were arrested on Thursday evening 80 miles off the coast in an operation led together with Border Force #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Sept.12: More than two tonnes of cocaine worth around £160m has been seized and six men arrested in a dramatic operation at sea.

#AceDailyNews reports that more than two tonnes of cocaine seized and six arrested after swoop on luxury yacht the men – one Briton from Stockton on Tees, County Durham, & five Nicaraguans – were arrested on Thursday evening 80 miles off the coast of Plymouth in an operation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and supported by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Border Force under Operation Ironside

Drug packages stacked in bricks

The suspects were aboard the Kahu – a luxury Jamaican-flagged yacht sailing from the Caribbean. It was escorted back to the UK mainland where a team carried out a deep rummage search and discovered the enormous haul of Class A.

The men, whose ages range from 24 to 49, were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and are in custody awaiting interview.

The arrests demonstrate the strength of the NCA’s international partnerships – working with the AFP who as part of the operation used evidence from their Operation Ironside – the country’s investigation into the AnOm encrypted comms platform.

Matt Horne, NCA deputy director, said: “This is a massive haul of cocaine with an estimated street value of around £160m: There’s no doubt these drugs would have been sold on into communities across the UK in such ways as County Lines fuelling more crime and misery: Organised crime groups are motivated by money. The deprivation of these drugs will smash a hole in the OCG’s plans and ability to operate: Also, the arrests of the men transporting the drugs means the crime group has lost trusted offenders who would have been key to their operation: We continue to work with partners at home such as Border Force and those abroad such as the AFP to protect the public from the Class A drugs threat.”

AFP Assistant Commissioner Lesa Gale, said: “Intelligence from Operation Ironside had enabled the AFP to assist international enforcement partners in disrupting an alleged sophisticated criminal network: Operation Ironside has opened the door to unprecedented collaboration across law enforcement agencies around the globe: This result highlights the importance of the AFP’s partnership with the NCA to combat offshore transnational organised crime that impacts both of our countries: The AFP and NCA have a strong, historic relationship and both agencies recognise the significant threat to national security posed by transnational organised crime.”

` France’s Consumer Rights Group `Files Lawsuit ‘ in ` Paris Court ‘ against Social Media for Violation of Privacy ‘

#AceSocialNews – FRANCE – March 25 – France’s top consumer rights group has filed a lawsuit in a Paris court against Google+, Facebook and Twitter, accusing the social networks of violating the country’s privacy laws.

UFC-Que Choisir – a group which advises consumers on products, services and their rights – said it was filing a suit in the High Court over “abusive” and “illegal” practices in the conditions of use on the three social networks, AFP reported Tuesday.

The consumers’ group said that last summer they warned the companies that they would bring legal action in case they did not address concerns over terms of use and data-collection practices.

However, “they are stubbornly maintaining clauses that the association considers abusive or illegal,” the group was reported as saying.

UFC-Que Choisir asked the court to order Google+, Facebook and Twitter to get rid of or change the fine print on their terms of use since, they believe, it is far too complicated.

According to the organization, the instructions were “inaccessible, unreadable and full of hypertext links” – some of which are available only in English.

The watchdog claimed that the social networks “persist in authorizing the widespread collection, modification, preservation and use of the data of users and even of those around them.”

` Syrian Military Jet has been intercepted near the the `Syrian-Turkish ‘ border for violating Turkish Air Space’

#AceBreakingNews – 23 March – A Syrian military jet has been intercepted near the Syrian-Turkish border after it violated the Turkish airspace, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

Conflicting reports said the jet was shot down from the ground and crashed on the Syrian side.

The Syrian Air Force jet was shot down near the Kasab crossing in Latakia province, where fierce fighting between Syrian forces and armed insurgents has been going on for three days, Reuters reported.

Addressing supporters at a Sunday rally, Erdogan confirmed that Turkish armed forces had downed the jet.

“A Syrian plane violated our airspace. Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? Because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard,” Erdogan said, congratulating the Turkish Air Force on its actions.

Earlier reports suggested the jet came down in Syrian territory while bombing targets in Latakia.

“Turkish air defences targeted a Syrian fighter bomber as it struck areas of the northern province of Latakia. The plane caught fire and crashed in Syrian territory,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights was quoted as saying by AFP.

` Guinea ` Ebola Virus ' has killed at least 59 and According to Reports may now have spread to Sierra Leone '

#AceHealthNews – GUINEA – 23 March – The deadly epidemic, which has killed at least 59 people, in Guinea, West Africa, and could have spread to neighbouring Sierra Leone, has been confirmed to be Ebola, according to government officials.

Following failed attempts by medical experts in Guinea to identify the disease, which started claiming lives six weeks ago, samples of the virus were sent to scientists in the French city of Lyon, who confirmed the virus was Ebola.

“The Ebola fever epidemic raging in southern Guinea, including the prefectures of Gueckedou and Macenta, since February 9 has left at least 59 dead out of 80 cases identified by our services on the ground,” the Guinean health ministry’s chief disease prevention officer, Sakoba Keita, announced on Saturday, according to AFP.

The disease, which has diarrhoea, vomiting and bleeding among its symptoms and kills between 25 and 90 percent of those who fall sick, depending on the virus’s strain, has never before been registered in Guinea. It has now been found in three south-eastern towns and in the capital, Conakry.

The disease could have also spread to neighbouring Sierra Leone, according to World Health Organization (WHO) officials, who reported cases showing similar symptoms there.

` Tribute to the `Agence France Presse ' Journalist ` Sardar Ahmad ' who died in hotel in Kabul '

#AceWorldNews – 21 March – “This is an immensely painful and enormous loss for Agence France-Presse, “ said AFP chairman Emmanuel Hoog. “ Sardar Ahmad was a dedicated and courageous journalist, a cornerstone of our team in Afghanistan who delivered, every day, exceptional coverage of the news in extremely difficult conditions. “

The attack by Taliban gunmen on a restaurant in the hotel left at least nine dead. It came two weeks before the presidential election and marked a fresh deterioration in the security situation in the Afghan capital.

The body of Sardar, his wife and two children were identified at the hospital by an AFP photographer.

“It is by relying on journalists like Sardar that the international media is able to cover the Afghan tragedy,” said AFP’s global news director Philippe Massonnet. “The entire agency and its worldwide network are in mourning today. “

Aged 40, Sardar Ahmad was hired by AFP in 2003 to cover the daily briefings by the US-led coalition at Bagram airbase, and became a permanent correspondent covering all aspects of Afghan life.

He was a specialist in security issues with strong contacts on both the government and Taliban sides, which gave him a deep understanding of the complex conflict which was wracking his country.

But he wrote about all aspects of Afghan society– his last feature, filed on Tuesday, was about a lion that was rescued from a rooftop in Kabul.

AFP has maintained a strong presence in Kabul during the decades of conflict that have plagued Afghanistan.
