` UK and US branded `Enemies of the Internet ‘ by `Reporters without Borders’ which disrupt `Freedom of Information’

#AceSecurityNews – United Kingdom and the US have been branded ‘Enemies of the Internet’ for the first time by Reporters Without Borders on their annual list of countries which disrupt freedom of information through surveillance and censorship.

Both the US and the UK were included in the list for first time as a result of revelations from the Whistleblower Edward Snowden into the activities of the American and British spy agencies.

In fact Edward Snowden branded the UK, where the government has largely ignored calls to reign in the nation’s spooks and the public remain apathetic, as “worse than the US”.

Snowden outlines various “widespread surveillance practices” operated by GCHQ as part of its plan called “Mastering the internet”.

“The Internet was a collective resource that the NSA and GCHQ turned into a weapon in the service of special interests, in the process flouting freedom of information, freedom of expression and the right to privacy,” say the report’s authors.

The UK, says the press watchdog, paid scant heed to any legal considerations when harvesting huge amounts of data.

“Supported by the NSA and with the prospect of sharing data, the British agency brushed aside all legal obstacles and embarked on mass surveillance of nearly a quarter of the world’s communications,” the report says.

` International Condemnation of the `Crimea Referendum ' began pouring in from the ` World Capitals ' before polls closed '

#AceWorldNews International condemnation of the referendum began pouring in from world capitals even before the polls had closed.

US Secretary of State John Kerry demanded that Moscow pull back its forces to their bases in Crimea in return for constitutional reforms in Ukraine to protect minority rights.

A US State Department official said Kerry told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a phone call that “as Ukrainians take the necessary political measures going forward, Russia must reciprocate by pulling forces back to base.”

The European Union said it would be deciding on sanctions against Russia on Monday that include the possible seizure of the foreign assets of top Kremlin officials and travel bans for senior ministers.

“We reiterate the strong condemnation of the unprovoked violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty… and call on Russia to withdraw its armed forces to their pre-crisis numbers,” the EU said in a statement.

` Israeli Government Closes the only `Power Station ‘ in Gaza due to `Sanctions’ – runs out of Fuel ‘

#AceWorldNews Gaza is bracing for a “humanitarian crisis” after its only power station was shut down due to a lack of fuel from Israel.

The Israeli government closed the Kerem Shalom crossing this week, effectively severing the fuel supply to Gaza.

In the wake of a number of rocket attacks on Israeli territory on Wednesday, the Israeli government closed all borders with Gaza and suspended the delivery of all commercial goods to the region.

As a consequence of the sanctions, Gaza’s only power station ran out of fuel Saturday.

“The plant has completely ceased to function due to a lack of fuel caused by (Israel’s) closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing,” said Fathi al-Sheikh Khalil, deputy director of the energy authority in the Palestinian territory ruled by the Islamist Hamas movement to AFP.

#AceWorldNews A Paris court has sentenced Pascal Simbikangwa, a former army captain and intelligence officer, to 25 years in jail for genocide and crimes against humanity in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide where up to 800,000 Tutsis and Hutus died.

Simbikangwa was arrested in 2008 on the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean.

Throughout the six-week trial he maintained that he was the victim of a “witch-hunt” originating from the now ruling Tutsis, and insisted he had never seen any of the bodies that littered the towns and roads of Rwanda at the time.

#AceWorldNews Members of the Ukrainian far-right parties, including Maidan leaders Oleg Tyagnibok and Dmitry Yarosh, are to be added to the wanted list for participation in hostilities against Russian soldiers in Chechnya, Russia’s Investigative Committee says.

Raed Zeiter, 38, a Palestinian-Jordanian, was shot at a border crossing Monday. Israeli troops said he attacked them, igniting a diplomatic row between Israel and Jordan.

The demonstration started after Friday prayers in Kaluti mosque, near the Israeli embassy in the Rabia neighbourhood in West Amman.

Protesters waved banners reading “the people want to cancel the [1994] peace treaty.”

On Wednesday, the lower house of Jordan’s parliament demanded the government expel the Israeli envoy in Amman and recall the Jordanian ambassador in Israel.

` US judge has thrown out charges against `Devyani Khobragade ' whose arrest sparked a Diplomatic Row '

#AceWorldNews A US judge has thrown out charges against an Indian diplomat, Devyani Khobragade, whose New York arrest and strip search sparked a diplomatic row with New Delhi, AFP said.

US District Judge Shira Scheindlin dismissed the indictment Wednesday on grounds that Khobragade was granted full diplomatic immunity Jan. 8.
“Even if Khobragade had no immunity at the time of her arrest and has none now, her acquisition of immunity during the pendency of proceedings mandates dismissal,” Scheindlin wrote.

Khobragade was arrested December 12 outside her children’s New York school and accused of submitting a fraudulent visa application for her Indian housekeeper.

` EU and US exposes `Europe’s Reluctance to Buy ` GM Food or Hormone Meat ‘ putting the TTIP under Threat ‘

#AceWorldNews An ‘enormous gulf’ has been exposed between the EU and the US through Europe’s reluctance to buy hormone meat or GM food from the US. Industry and labour groups voiced concern to EU and US negotiators that the globe’s biggest trade pact was under threat.

“There is an enormous gulf between the EU and US positions,” said Michael Dolan, a lobbyist for the US Teamsters Union at the fourth round of trade talks between the EU and US in Brussels on Wednesday.

The talks marked an unusual occasion, being the first time that lobbyists were received, and additionally marking the first time that the forum allowed reporters inside.

Those involved in negotiating a pact have expressed a desire to finalize a deal before the end of the year. Eight months of talks have already passed. However, tensions which have underscored trade talks worldwide have been a drawback, and continued low public support for the deal has exacerbated tensions over food.

Despite this, its supporters say the deal would lead to some $100 billion per year in growth on both sides, and the EU says that ‘Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership’ (TTIP) is under threat from protesters it deems ‘anti-globalization’.

The EU is also closed to US beef from cattle raised with growth hormones.

On March 10, the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) secretary, Owen Paterson, added his backing to an EU proposal that may prompt the fast-tracking of GM crops for commercial cultivation in the country.

Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, GM Freeze, the Soil Association and GeneWatch UK added their signatures to a letter to UK Prime Minister David Cameron condemning the plans.

GeneWatch UK director, Helen Wallace, stated that Monsanto and other GM companies were “desperate to push their GM crops into other countries before the devastating impacts on wildlife and farming destroy existing markets,” according to local publication Farmers Weekly.

` Yemeni inmate introduces a landmark lawsuit to challenge practice of force-feeding at Guantanamo Bay ‘

#AceWorldNews Yemeni inmate at Guantanamo Bay has introduced a landmark lawsuit challenging the practice of force-feeding at the US military prison camp.

The case represents the first time a US court will hear allegations of detainee abuse at Gitmo.

The plaintiff, Emad Abdullah Hassan, says he has been force-fed more than 5,000 times since 2007 as part of the military’s efforts to break his hunger strike, the UK-based human-rights organization Reprieve said Tuesday, citing court documents.

The 34-year old has been held at Guantánamo Bay since 2002 without charge and is said to be gravely ill.

“All I want is what President Obama promised – my liberty, and fair treatment for others. I have been cleared for five years, and I have been force-fed for seven years.

This is not a life worth living, it is a life of constant pain and suffering. While I do not want to die, it is surely my right to protest peacefully without being degraded and abused every day.”

Hassan claims detainees are force-fed up to a gallon of nutrients and water at a time, while another inmate said that feeding sessions have been sped up, sometimes compressed into as little as 20 minutes, AP reports.

“When liquid is forced into him at excessive speed, [Hassan] vomits on himself. The feeding process starts again, but the vomit remains. With the nutrient mix comes the forcible administration of medication to counteract his inevitable constipation.

The most humiliating aspect of the whole process, he says, is when he defecates on himself and is forced to remain seated for an hour or more before being returned to his cell — where he will be refused clean clothes,” Clive Stafford Smith, the founder and director of Reprieve who is representing Hassan, wrote in an op-ed for Al-Jazeera.

#AceWorldNew Victims of Haiti’s deadly post-earthquake cholera epidemic have filed a new lawsuit against the UN in a federal court in Brooklyn, New York, AFP reported.

They are demanding compensation over the organization’s alleged responsibility for the outbreak.

The class-action suit filed on Tuesday represents some 1,500 victims and is “the largest lawsuit against the UN regarding the outbreak to date,” plaintiffs’ representatives said.

There had been no cholera in Haiti for at least 150 years until it was allegedly introduced by Nepalese UN peacekeepers.

They were sent to the country in the wake of the devastating earthquake in January 2010.

Lawmakers from President Park Geun-hye’s ruling Saenuri Party called for NIS Director Nam Jae-joon to resign.

` US sending `F-16 Fighter Jet’s ‘ and ` 300 Service Personnel ‘ to ` Poland ‘ in response to crisis in Ukraine ‘

#AceWorldNews US is sending a dozen F-16 fighter jets and nearly 300 service personnel to Poland by Thursday as part of a training exercise in response to the crisis in neighbouring Ukraine, the Polish defence ministry confirmed.

The agreement to deploy US military forces in Poland was made between US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, and Poland’s Minister of National Defense Tomasz Siemoniak during a telephone conversation on Sunday, March 9, 2014, according to a statement on the official website of the Polish Ministry of National Defence.

“The squadron will number twelve F-16 planes and will transport 300 soldiers,” Polish Defence Ministry spokesman, Jacek Sonta, confirmed to AFP.

Initially, the training exercise was planned to be smaller but was increased and pushed forward because of the “tense political situation” in neighbouring Ukraine, added Sonta.

The ministry also said that the aim of sending the units is to “strengthen Polish – American cooperation.” Part of the preparation team of US Air Force has already arrived on Polish territory.
