(WASHINGTON) FTC ALERT REPORT: Has Amazon contacted you to confirm a recent purchase you didn’t make or to tell you that your account has been hacked? Its NOT always true you maybe being SCAMMED #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.23: These scams can look a few different ways. In one version, scammers offer to “refund” you for an unauthorized purchase but “accidentally transfer” more than promised. They then ask you to send back the difference.

#AceDailyNews FTC Report: Amazon impersonators: So what you need to know according to the FTC’s new Data Spotlight, since July 2020, about one in three people who have reported a business impersonator scam say the scammer pretended to be Amazon……

Acting Associate Director, Division of Consumer Response and Operations : October 20, 2021: Maria Mayo

What really happens?

The scammer moves your own money from one of your bank accounts to the other (like your Savings to Checkings, or vice versa) to make it look like you were refunded. Any money you send back to “Amazon” is your money (not an overpayment) — and as soon as you send it out of your account, it becomes theirs. In another version of the scam, you’re told that hackers have gotten access to your account — and the only way to supposedly protect it is to buy gift cards and share the gift card number and PIN on the back. Once that information is theirs, the money is, too.

Here are some ways to avoid an Amazon impersonator scam:

  • Never call back an unknown number. Use the information on Amazon’s website and not a number listed in an unexpected email or text.
  • Don’t pay for anything with a gift card. Gift cards are for gifts. If anyone asks you to pay with a gift card – or buy gift cards for anything other than a gift, it’s a scam.
  • Don’t give remote access to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. This gives scammers easy access to your personal and financial information—like access to your bank accounts.

Have you spotted this scam? Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov

If you think someone has gotten access to your accounts or personal information, visit IdentityTheft.gov. There, you’ll find steps to take to see if your identity has been misused, and how to report and recover from identity theft.

(NEW YORK) U.S #ClimateChange Crisis Bill Report: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft & Disney are some of the clutch of corporate entities that are backing business groups against the legislation #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.03: Some of America’s most prominent companies, including Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Disney, are backing business groups that are fighting landmark climate legislation, despite their own promises to combat the climate crisis, a new analysis has found…

#AceDailyNews says that Guardian by reports that Apple and Disney among companies backing groups against US climate bill: A clutch of corporate lobby groups and organizations have mobilized to oppose the proposed $3.5tn budget bill put forward by Democrats, which contains unprecedented measures to drive down planet-heating gases. The reconciliation bill has been called the “the most significant climate action in our country’s history” by Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the US Senate…..

https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/1335

Most large US corporations have expressed concern over the climate crisis or announced their own goals to cut greenhouse gases. Jeff Bezos, one of the world’s richest people, has said that the climate crisis is the “biggest threat to our planet” and the company he founded, Amazon, has created a pledge for businesses to cut their emissions to net zero by 2040. Microsoft has promised to be “carbon negative” within a decade from now and Disney is aiming to use only renewable-sourced electricity within the same timeframe.

But these leading companies, and others, either support or actively steer the very lobby groups that are attempting to sink the bill that carries the weight of Joe Biden’s ambitions to tackle the climate crisis, threatening one of the last major legislative efforts that will help decide whether parts of the world plunge into a new, barely livable climatic state.

“Major corporations love to tell us how committed they are to addressing the climate crisis and building a sustainable future, but behind closed doors, they are funding the very industry trade groups that are fighting tooth and nail to stop the biggest climate change bill ever,” said Kyle Herrig, president of watchdog group Accountable.US, which compiled the analysis.

None of the companies contacted by the Guardian would rebuke the stance of the lobby groups they are part of and none said they would review their links to these groups.

“Hiding behind these shady groups doesn’t just put our environment at risk – it puts these companies’ household names and reputations in serious jeopardy,” Herrig said.

The US Chamber of Commerce has vowed to “do everything we can to prevent this tax raising, job killing reconciliation bill from becoming law”. The leading business lobby group’s board includes executives from companies including Microsoft, Intuit, United Airlines and Deloitte, which have all expressed concern over climate change – Deloitte even includes teaching the climate crisis to employees in its staff training – and have made various promises to reduce emissions.

Another group, the Business Roundtable, has said it is “deeply concerned” about the passage of the bill, largely because it raises taxes on the wealthy. The organization is made up of company chief executives, including Apple’s Tim Cook, who has called for stronger action on the climate emergency from governments and businesses. Other members include Andy Jassy, chief executive of Amazon, Sundar Pichai, who heads Google’s parent company Alphabet, and Darren Woods, chief executive of the oil giant Exxon.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a trade group that includes Bayer and AstraZeneca among its members, has run adverts attacking the proposed bill. The Rate Coalition, another lobby group that has Disney, FedEx and Verizon as members, is also planning an advertising blitz to help kill off the legislation while the National Association of Manufacturers – backed by Johnson&Johnson, Dow and Goodyear – has said it is attempting to upend the bill “in every way you can imagine”.

This blitz threatens legislation that already faces a perilous path through Congress, with the president needing every Senate Democrat to vote for the package for it to pass. Joe Manchin, the centrist Democrat from West Virginia who is a major recipient of donations from the fossil fuel industry, has said the climate section of the bill “makes no sense” and has demanded that subsidies for coal, oil and gas remain in place. Republicans universally oppose the bill.

If enacted, the bill would establish a system to phase out emissions from the US electricity system, provide payments to prop up carbon-free nuclear energy and support the adoption of electric vehicles.

As the first major attempt at climate legislation in more than a decade, the bill comes at a time when scientists warn the world is rapidly running out of time to avoid catastrophic climate change. The legislation’s failure would not only wound Biden politically, it would also likely hinder attempts to prod other countries into more drastic action at crucial upcoming UN climate talks in Scotland.

“This is a historic chance to end fossil fuel subsidies and invest in a livable future,” said Lukas Ross, climate program manager at Friends of the Earth. “We can’t waste this opportunity to pass meaningful climate legislation because there might not be another.”

(WASHINGTON) Justice Dept Court Report: U.S. Corporation Sentenced for Importing Illegally-Sourced Wood from the Amazon #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Sept.04: Global Plywood was incorporated in Nevada and operated out of Poway, California. In August 2015, Global Plywood purchased approximately 1,135 cubic meters of hardwood blanks from three Peruvian suppliers. The wood, consisting of species of Virola from the Loreto region of the Peruvian Amazon, arrived at the Port of Houston aboard the M/V Yacu Kallpa on September 27, 2015, where it was seized by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers….

#AceDailyNews reports on the court case for the Global Plywood and Lumber Trading LLC (Global Plywood) pleaded guilty today in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to violating the Lacey Act. The corporation admitted that it failed to exercise due care when it imported illegally-sourced timber from the Peruvian Amazon into the United States…

The court sentenced Global Plywood to pay $200,000 in restitution to the Ministry of Environment of Peru and a $5,000 fine.

Peru issues Forest Travel Guides to establish a chain of custody and ensure that any timber harvested or transported is legal. The Agency for Supervision of Forest Resources and Wildlife (OSINFOR) audits harvest sites to ensure legal compliance. OSINFOR made its findings available on SIGO, an open-source website maintained by the Peruvian government. Importers are able to check SIGO to determine if there have been any irregularities regarding specific harvest permits and Forest Travel Guides. Global Plywood was aware of such public reports detailing instances of illegal logging and fraud within the Peruvian timber industry.

The investigation revealed that approximately 92% of the wood that Global Plywood imported had been unlawfully harvested or transported. In pleading guilty, Global Plywood acknowledged that it failed to exercise due care in that it (i) did not obtain or review relevant harvest permits or Forest Travel Guides prior to import, (ii) failed to check SIGO for irregularities connected to the timber purchased, and (iii) relied on statements made by suppliers without further investigation, a site visit, or other confirmation of the truth of those statements.

The Lacey Act prohibits, among other things, the import of plants, wildlife, or fish without exercising due care to identify the source of the goods. Global Plywood dissolved in 2017, having forfeited and disposed of the illegal timber pursuant to a civil action.

The Trade Enforcement Group of Homeland Security Investigations in Houston and CBP conducted the investigation with assistance from Peruvian authorities. Trial Attorneys Patrick Duggan and Ryan Connors of the Environmental Crimes Section of the Environment and Natural Resources Division prosecuted the case.

(SILICON VALLEY, Calif.) JUST IN: Encrypted messaging application Wickr has been procured by Amazon for an undisclosed sum. The app, advertised as one of the most secure on the market, has been in use by multiple US government agencies #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.26: The deal was announced by the two companies on Friday, with neither disclosing any figures: We are pleased to share that Wickr has been acquired by Amazon and is now part of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team. We’re proud to have created highly trusted, secure communication solutions for messaging, video conferencing, file sharing, and more,” Wickr said in a statement posted on its website:

Chat app sting tells US intel agencies are interested in more than just ‘backdoors’, CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou tells RT

Founded back in 2012, the company is best known for its free app, allowing users to send encrypted messages, as well as make supposedly secure video and audio calls. The application also boasts an auto-burn feature, with messages getting deleted from user’s devices after a certain period of time. The company claims the mechanism is so secure that said messages “can never be recovered.”

Apart from maintaining the free app, Wickr has also offered paid plans for organizations, government agencies, and specifically for militaries. Among its “customers and partners,” the company lists the US Department of Defense, and Spirit of America, a US military-linked non-profit.

Amazon has said the purchase will not make any difference for Wickr users, with the application now immediately available through the AWS.

The purchase will, however, probably make a difference for Amazon itself, as the tech behemoth has now entered the secure messaging app game. Moreover, the purchase will likely help the company to get even cozier with Washington, given that US government agencies already use its freshly procured application after EU-bankrolled cybersecurity firm develops intrusive tech that allows ‘anonymous’ snooping & remote control of net devices – media

The procurement might also help Amazon to make up for the loss of the long-delayed $10 billion Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud computing contract with the Pentagon. While the contract was considered by multiple experts to be a done deal for Amazon, it was contested by other tech giants and ultimately won by Microsoft. Since then, Amazon has been leading a legal fight, trying to prove that Washington influenced the deal.

(USA) Operation Sidewalk Report: Starting June 8, Amazon will automatically enable a feature on its family of hardware devices, including Echo speakers, Ring Video Doorbells, Ring Floodlight Cams, and Ring Spotlight Cams, that will share a small part of your Internet bandwidth with nearby neighbors — unless you choose to opt-out #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.02: To that effect, the company intends to register all compatible devices that are operational in the U.S. into an ambitious location-tracking system called Sidewalk as it prepares to roll out the shared mesh network in the country.

US Amazon Devices to Automatically Share Your Wi-Fi With Neighbors: Originally announced in September 2019, Sidewalk is part of Amazon’s efforts to build a long-range wireless network that leverages a combination of Bluetooth and 900 MHz spectrum (FSK) to help Echo, Ring, Tile trackers, and other Sidewalk-enabled devices communicate over the internet without Wi-Fi.

Amazon Sidewalk WiFi Share

Owners of Echo and Ring devices can elect to opt-out of the device-to-device network either via Alex or Ring apps by following the below steps:

  • Alexa app: Open More > select Settings > Account Settings > Amazon Sidewalk, and toggle it on/off
  • Ring app: Tap “three-lined” menu > Control Center > Sidewalk, and tap the slider button

Sidewalk is designed to extend the working range of low-bandwidth devices, and help devices stay connected even if they are outside the range of a user’s home Wi-Fi network. It achieves this by pooling together a small sliver of internet bandwidth from the participating devices to create what’s a shared network.

The mechanism that undergirds Sidewalk is conceptually analogous to how Apple leverages its huge installed base of Apple devices to help locate lost devices using its Find My network. But Sidewalk also extends beyond location tracking for virtually any kind of short-range two-way communication. Besides utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Sidewalk also makes use of long-range wireless technology known as LoRa to help devices stay connected and continue to work over longer distances.

By flipping the switch on Sidewalk in the U.S. for all capable devices by default, the idea is to co-opt millions of smart home devices into the network and provide near-ubiquitous connectivity out of the range of a standard Wi-Fi network.

Sidewalk’s Privacy and Security Protections

Elaborating on the protections baked into Sidewalk, the retail and entertainment behemoth said that packets traversing through the network are secured by three layers of encryption, and that it has safeguards in place to prevent unauthorized devices from joining by using Sidewalk credentials created during device registration process to authenticate their identities.

Amazon Sidewalk WiFi Share

“Sidewalk protects customer privacy by limiting the amount and type of metadata that Amazon needs to receive from Sidewalk endpoints to manage the network,” the company said in a white paper, while stressing that Sidewalk has been implemented with security protocols to prevent disclosure of private information and any commands that may be transmitted over the network.

Each transmission between an endpoint (say, leak sensors, door locks, or smart lights) and its respective application server is also identified by a unique transmission-ID (TX-ID) that changes every 15 minutes to prevent tracking devices and associating a device to a specific user.

That said, Sidewalk does need to know a third-party Sidewalk-enabled device’s serial number to route the message to its respective application server. “The routing information that Amazon does receive for operating the network components of Sidewalk is automatically cleared every 24 hours,” it added. Amazon also noted in the whitepaper that endpoints reported as lost or stolen will blocklisted.

While the security guarantees of the undertaking are without a doubt a step in the right direction, it’s been established repeatedly that wireless technologies like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are prone to critical flaws that leave devices vulnerable to a variety of attacks, and a proprietary communication protocol like Sidewalk could be no exception. This is setting aside the possibility that the technology could be abused as surveillance tools to discreetly track a partner and encourage stalking.

How to Opt-Out and Turn Off Amazon Sidewalk?

A matter of more concern is that Sidewalk is opt-out rather than opt-in, meaning users will be automatically enrolled into Sidewalk unless they choose to explicitly turn it off.

In an FAQ on the Sidewalk page, Amazon says that should users opt to disable the feature, it’s tantamount to “missing out on Sidewalk’s connectivity and location related benefits,” adding “You also will no longer contribute your internet bandwidth to support community extended coverage benefits such as locating pets and valuables with Sidewalk-enabled devices.”

(NEW YORK) JUST IN: MGM Report: Amazon is reportedly in talks to purchase MGM at a figure of $9-billion #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.19: James Bond, The Handmaid’s Tale, Rocky, Stargate, Robocop, Legally Blonde, Vikings, a historic catalog of films dating back many decades, an array of production and distribution companies, and the content network Epix — these are the things that Amazon might own if it buys storied film giant MGM for billions of dollars in the very near future:

MGM Logo
MGM & AMAZON DEAL

Amazon has reportedly offered $9 billion for the company, according to Variety, following a scoop from The Information earlier in the day that suggested a range of $7-10 billion for a potential deal, and Variety suggests that $9 billion was also the amount that MGM was reportedly hoping to get.

: May.17, 2021, 9:20pm EDT

Between those factors, the fact that MGM has been up for sale since December 2020, and the jealousy that comes with the sudden impending existence of a new media giant earlier today as AT&T spins off WarnerMedia and combines it with Discovery, it wouldn’t be very surprising if Amazon and MGM made a deal. The Information was slightly less bullish in its report today, though, writing that “The status of Amazon’s discussions with MGM is unclear and it’s possible no deal will result.”

In December, The Guardian reported that MGM has a library of 4,000 films and 17,000 hours of TV. James Bond in particular is one of the most valuable film franchises ever made — a list that’s only growing smaller as the Disney umbrella and Marvel Cinematic Universe swallow as many rivals as it can.
