(LONDON) JUST IN: Dave Prowse, the British weightlifter-turned-actor who was the body, though not the voice, of arch-villain Darth Vader in the original “Star Wars” trilogy, has died. He was 85. Prowse died Saturday after a short illness, his agent Thomas Bowington said Sunday #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.29: Born in Bristol, southwest England, in 1935, Prowse was a three-time British weightlifting champion and represented England in weightlifting at the 1962 Commonwealth Games before breaking into movies with roles that emphasized his commanding size, including Frankenstein’s monster in a pair of Hammer Studios horror films: Director George Lucas saw Prowse in a small part in “A Clockwork Orange” and asked the 6-foot-6-inch (almost 2-meter) actor to audition for the villainous Vader or the Wookie Chewbacca in “Star Wars.”

Dave Prowse: Darth Vader actor dies aged 85……

Prowse later told the BBC he chose Darth Vader because “you always remember the bad guys.”

Physically, Prowse was perfect for the part. His lilting English West Country accent was considered less ideal, and his lines were dubbed by James Earl Jones: Prowse donned Darth Vader’s black armor and helmet for “Star Wars” (1977), “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980) and “Return of the Jedi” (1983)……………He expressed some regret that, thanks to Vader’s mask, “I can walk around with complete anonymity.” ” All actors crave recognition and I’d like to have some like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo,” he told The Associated Press in 1980. “Fortune tends to follow fame.”

Prowse also worked as a trainer for other actors, helping Christopher Reeve prepare to be the Man of Steel in hit 1978 film “Superman.”

Prowse was also known to a generation of British children as the Green Cross Code Man, a superhero in a series of road safety advertisements during the 1970s and ’80s.

He was a regular at “Star Wars” fan events, but was banned from official conventions by Lucas in 2010 after the pair fell out.

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the “Star Wars” films, tweeted that Prowse was “a kind man & much more than Darth Vader.” Hamill said the actor “loved his fans as much as they loved him. #RIP

“ Ant-Man” director Edgar Wright also paid tribute to Prowse on Twitter.

“ As a kid Dave Prowse couldn’t be more famous to me; stalking along corridors as evil incarnate in the part of Darth Vader & stopping a whole generation of kiddies from being mown down in street as the Green Cross Code man,” he wrote. “Rest in Peace, Bristol’s finest.”

Prowse is survived by his wife Norma and their three children.

(LONDON) Ministerial Statement Report: Nadhim Zahawi MP has been appointed as a ‘ Parliamentary Under Secretary of State ‘ at the Department of Health and Social Care #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Nov.28: The British government appointed a vaccines minister on Saturday as it prepares to inoculate millions of people against the coronavirus, potentially starting within days: Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Conservative lawmaker Nadhim Zahawi will oversee the country’s biggest vaccine program in decades:

Ministerial Appointment: 28 November 2020: Nadim Zahawi MP as #Covid19according to @DHSCgovuk

The U.K. medicines regulator is currently assessing two vaccines — one developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, the other by Oxford University and AstraZeneca — to see if they are safe and effective. The Guardian newspaper reported that hospitals have been told they could receive the first doses of the Pfizer shot the week of Dec. 7, if it receives approval: The U.K. says frontline health care workers and nursing home residents will be the first to be vaccinated, followed by older people, starting with those over age 80.

Britain has ordered 40 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, enough for 20 million people, and 100 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine: In all, the U.K. government has agreed to purchase up to 355 million doses of vaccine from seven different producers, as it prepares to vaccinate as many of the country’s 67 million people as possible: Decisions about which, if any, vaccines to authorize will be made by the independent Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency:

Pfizer and BioNTech say their vaccine is 95% effective, according to preliminary data. It must be stored at ultra-cold temperatures of around minus 70 degrees Celsius (minus 94 Fahrenheit)…………….The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine can be stored at conventional refrigerator temperatures, and is also cheaper than its main rivals. But some scientists have questioned gaps in its reported results.

Oxford and AstraZeneca reported this week that their vaccine appeared to be 62% effective in people who received two doses, and 90% effective when volunteers were given a half dose followed by a full dose: They said the half dose was administered because of a manufacturing error, and they plan a new clinical trial to investigate the most effective dosing regimen:

The British government hopes a combination of vaccines and mass testing will end the need for restrictions on business and everyday life it imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Britain has had Europe’s deadliest COVID-19 outbreak, with more than 57,000 confirmed virus-related deaths: The prime minister said this week that officials hope to inoculate “the vast majority of the people who need the most protection by Easter.” But he warned that “we must first navigate a hard winter” of restrictions:

A four-week national lockdown in England is due to end Wednesday, and will be replaced by three-tiered system of regional measures that restrict business activity, travel and socializing. The vast majority of the country is being put into the upper two tiers: Johnson faces opposition to the measures from dozens of his own Conservative Party’s lawmakers, who say the economic damage outweighs the public health benefits.

But Cabinet minister Michael Gove said the restrictions were “grimly” necessary to avoid the health system being overwhelmed this winter: Writing in The Times of London, Gove said there are currently 16,000 coronavirus patients in British hospitals, not far below the April peak of 20,000. A rise in infections would mean coronavirus patients would “displace all but emergency cases. And then even those.,” he said: ” If, however, we can keep the level of infection stable or, even better, falling, and hold out through January and February, then we can be confident that vaccination will pull the plug on the problem,” Gove wrote:

(PARIS, France.) JUST IN: Protesters throughout France have shown up for rallies against a controversial draft law on public safety, under which filming a police officer on duty may result in a hefty fine. Critics say it fosters impunity for misconduct (RT NEWS PHOTOS, VIDEOS) #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.28: The protests were organized in many large French cities, including Paris, Marseilles, Lyon, Brest and Nice, with thousands participating despite Covid-19 concerns. The main event is happening in the Place de la République in the capital:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The demonstrators are voicing their anger over a draft law on public security, which was approved by the lower chamber of the parliament this week: Article 24 of the bill bans filming of police officers on duty with an intention to harm them. Lawmakers who voted for the bill are among the officials who were shamed by the protesters:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The reasoning behind the provision, which introduces a fine of €45,000 ($53,450) or even a one-year jail term, is that members of the force need to be protected from doxxing and online harassment: Critics say it curtails journalistic freedoms and would be used to intimidate people who want to expose police brutality and other forms of misconduct:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The protests were organised by unions, but they have many supporters: The Yellow Vests movement, which was sparked by growing social and economic inequality and for months remained a major problem for President Emmanuel Macron, is among them:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

There is also a component of racism in why the proposed law sparked so much anger. Police abuse of people of color became more visible thanks to the spread of mobile phones with good cameras and social media:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

One such incident, which was filmed on CCTV rather than a personal device, went viral this week after the footage was leaked online: It showed French police beat and racially abuse a black man, apparently for not wearing a face mask: Police have also been slammed for their heavy-handed tactics in clearing a migrant camp in central Paris earlier this week:

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) JUST IN: CHP Report: That at least 62 people have been arrested as police have forcibly removed homeless people from vacant state-owned homes in El Sereno officials said in a statement on Friday according to Pasadena Star-News #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.28: The conflict sparked Wednesday, when people took over several homes that had been bought by Caltrans over the years as it planned the now-defunct 710 Freeway expansion: More than 160 state-owned homes sit vacant along what was supposed to be the freeway’s corridor in El Sereno, Pasadena and South Pasadena, according to data obtained last year by the Pasadena Star-News.

KTLA https://ift.tt/33rbapc

CHP says Caltrans requested its officers’ assistance after break-ins were reported at some of the El Sereno properties Wednesday: Ultimately, 21 people were arrested across Wednesday and Thursday on suspicion of trespassing and burglary: CHP says they were escorted off the property after refusing to leave “in order to allow the uninhabitable buildings to be re-secured and boarded up for public safety.”

Silver Phoenix, who went to El Sereno to support the occupiers, called CHP’s response inhumane: ” Rather than allow the community to take that effort into housing their own people, they violently removed and extracted all these families who are now wondering where they’re going to be sleeping tonight,” she said. “It’s cold: They have nowhere else to go. There’s literally someone in our friend’s car, wondering where to go.”The large CHP response was met with a mass of protesters, and 41 people were arrested Thursday evening for alleged unlawful assembly.

All those arrested were cited and released, CHP said: Members of Reclaim and Rebuild Our Community said in a video message to Gov. Gavin Newsom posted on YouTube on Wednesday that they had “peacefully moved into several state-owned empty houses.”……………..CHP responded en masse, with officers in at least 50 vehicles packing the neighborhood to begin forcibly removing people that night:

Roberto Flores, an organizer with the group, said the families involved are homeless and have been living in cars and encampments, and looking for somewhere to shelter in place during the pandemic:

On Thursday, only Ganil Hernandez and her family remained in one of the houses: ” We’re taking back this home because we need to shelter in place and because housing is a human right,” Hernandez said: Hernandez said she and her family have been unable to pay the $2,000 rent on their apartment after her partner lost his job. She said their landlord told them they will be evicted in December: ” We can not afford rent here in Los Angeles. We tried moving out of state but we couldn’t get a place there either. I’m doing what I can for my family,” she said:

Caltrans said it has been working with local governments to lease several of its available properties for use as temporary emergency shelters: It recently signed a lease with the city of Los Angeles’ Housing Authority so that 22 vacant Caltrans-owned homes in El Sereno can be used for the city’s transitional housing program: Those homes are now legally housing families who are a part of Reclaiming Our Homes, the activist group said:

(PYONGYANG, N.K.) #Coronavirus Report: The North tried to hack at least one South Korean pharmaceutical company developing a #Covid19 vaccine, lawmaker Ha Tae-keung told reporters after attending a closed-door briefing by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) #AceNewsDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Nov.28: North Korea conducted a cyberattack on companies connected with vaccine development, an official in South Korea has said, citing intelligence report: The lawmaker who is a member of the parliamentary intelligence committee, said the NIS did not specify which company had been targeted, but there was no damage from the hacking attempts:

US-based cyber security firm Cybereason said earlier this month a group of hackers from North Korea was targeting companies working on the research and development of Covid-19 vaccines, and similar claims were made by Microsoft: https://t.me/c/1099420761/2094372

The software giant made allegations against Russian hackers as well: However, Russian officials previously said they did not see any reason for such cyber intrusions, as the country is developing several vaccines by itself:

Pyongyang did not comment on the recent allegations: In May, it denounced the accusations of cyber warfare made by the US as a smear campaign: North Korea announced in July that it was developing its own vaccine for Covid-19.

(MELBOURNE, Australia.) #Coronavirus Report: Spy Agencies caught collecting #COVID19 COVIDSafe contact tracing app data a government watchdog has found #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Nov.24: Australia’s intelligence agencies have been caught “incidentally” collecting data from the country’s COVIDSafe contact tracing app during the first six months of its launch, a government watchdog has found: From a report published Monday by the Australian government’s inspector general for the intelligence community, which oversees the government’s spy and eavesdropping agencies, said the app data was scooped up “in the course of the lawful collection of other data.”

But the watchdog said that there was “no evidence” that any agency “decrypted, accessed or used any COVID app data.” Incidental collection is a common term used by spies to describe the data that was not deliberately targeted but collected as part of a wider collection effort:

This kind of collection isn’t accidental, but more of a consequence of when spy agencies tap into fiber optic cables, for example, which carries an enormous firehose of data: An Australian government spokesperson told one outlet, which first reported the news, that incidental collection can also happen as a result of the “execution of warrants.” According to a report

(WORLDWIDE) Animal Scam Report: The increased demand for pets amid the #pandemic has sent puppy prices skyrocketing, and has caused a boom in pet-related fraud, such scams in the country have inflicted losses of more than US$1.5 million in Australia alone with other countries such as Canada & U.K. experiencing a sharp increase #AceHealthDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.24: The country has seen a spike in pet-related fraud this year, with the numbers being at least four times higher than in 2019: The most common thing people were trying to buy when they were scammed was puppies and other pets,” the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in a statement on Tuesday:

FILE PHOTO © Sputnik / Grigory Sysoev

Russian animal rights activists say 50,000 stray dogs & cats may have been murdered in Siberia shelter, call for federal probe

According to the watchdog, more than 2,100 cases of pet-related scams have been reported, inflicting more than AUD$2 million (nearly US $1.5 million) in damages. A predominant number of the cases are related to attempts to procure a canine from fraudsters, where the dog doesn’t actually exist:

Puppy prices have been soaring in Australia lately, particularly for compact dog breeds such as French bulldogs, pugs and dachshunds. Assorted advertisements available online promise aspiring pet-owners pure-breed puppies for prices ranging from AUD$3,000 up to a howling-mad AUD$10,000. But those ready to part with such sums risking getting neither canine nor cash as a result: Australian breeders have urged the public to be extra careful while searching for puppies online and to check whether they are actually looking for dogs via a legitimate platform. Admitting the spike in prices, the breeders warned against going for extremely high – and low – prices alike.

“I don’t know of any of our Dog’s Queensland breeders who would be charging those sums of money,” Dogs Queensland president Ulla Greenwood told local media. “Our breeders might be charging up to maybe AUD$4,500 but I think alarm bells should go off if prices above that are being asked.”

A similar surge in puppy scams has been observed in other countries, too, as many people have apparently opted for adopting a pet amid the pandemic as more are working from home or suffer loneliness due to lockdowns:

Canada and the US have experienced a sharp increase in pet scams, figures by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) have shown. Such scams have been reported more than three times as much as in 2019, and comprised nearly a quarter of all online scams registered. At the same time, North American fraudsters turned out to be significantly less greedy than their counterparts from down under, with the average loss in a scam amounting to ‘merely’ $700, according to the BBB: Last week, Britain’s Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss urged the public to be vigilant and not to get ‘pet-phished’ ahead of the Christmas holidays:

“After a difficult year and with many of us spending more time at home, many people may be considering getting a new puppy or kitten,” Middlemiss said in a statement. “However, the lead-up to Christmas is a prominent time for unscrupulous sellers to take advantage of those looking to buy a new pet.”

#AceNewsReport – Nov.23: The “appalling cost” of the conflict has resulted in the suffering of at least 26,025 children between 2005 and 2019, according to the organization: Ahead of its donor conference in Geneva this week, Save the Children declared Afghanistan one of the world’s most dangerous countries for children and called on nations to cease using explosive weapons in populated areas:

Imagine living with the constant fear that today might be the day that your child is killed in a suicide attack or an airstrike. This is the grim reality for tens of thousands of Afghan parents whose children have been killed or injured.

Violence has increased in Afghanistan as peace talks have stalled and US troops have begun withdrawing from the region. In 2019, Afghanistan accounted for the highest number of child fatalities (874) and injuries (2,275) of all global conflicts examined in the group’s report.

(ANKARA, Turkey.) JUST IN: Officials have summoned diplomatic envoys from the EU, Germany and Italy in protest over an attempt to search a Turkish cargo ship heading to Libya on the suspicion it was transporting embargoed weapons according to RT News #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.23: A note has been presented to the ambassadors, saying that the search violated international law, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday: German servicemen from the Hamburg frigate, which has been patrolling the Mediterranean as part of EU’s Irini operation to uphold an arms embargo on Libya, boarded a Turkish freighter overnight about 200km (125 miles) north of the Libyan coastal city of Benghazi: However, they couldn’t finish their search of the ship due to vigorous protests from Turkey. The German Defense Ministry acknowledged that by the time the troops left they had not “found anything suspicious,” but insisted that all procedures were followed correctly:

Ankara prevents German forces on Libya arms embargo mission from checking Turkish ship

Earlier, Turkey blasted the inspection as an “unauthorized and forceful act,” saying that the vessel was only carrying paints and humanitarian aid. Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hami Aksoy, complained that the crew of the ship were “treated like criminals” during the search. Ankara reserved the right for “all kinds of compensation” from the EU, he added: Aksoy also questioned the legitimacy and the purpose of the Irini Operation, suggesting that it was biased and only aimed “to punish” the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya – while allowing the ships carrying cargo for the rivaling forces of Khalifa Haftar to travel unchecked: Turkey’s support for GNA in the Libyan conflict has been one of many grievances between Ankara and Brussels, which include Turkish backing for Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute, and its aggressive rivalry with Greece and Cyprus for maritime jurisdiction and energy exploration rights in the Mediterranean:

(NAZARETH) JUST IN: A prominent British archaeologist has put forward a compelling case arguing that a well-preserved ancient house in Nazareth was the childhood home of Jesus #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.23: The building dates back to the first century and the site is now home to the Sisters of Nazareth Convent: In modern times, it was first identified as the house where Jesus grew up with Joseph and Mary in the 19th century, but the theory was dismissed in the 1930s and has been rejected ever since: However, after 14 years of fieldwork and research on the site, Ken Dark, a professor of archaeology and history at Reading University in the UK, has found that the convent stands on a dwelling that ancient Nazarene believed was Jesus’ first home: Significant chunks of the building survive, including a rock-cut staircase. In its first-century heyday, it probably included a number of living and storage rooms around a courtyard, and a roof terrace:

Workers from the Israeli Antiquities Authority work in the Herodium fortress. File Photo: © Global Look Press / Gil Cohen Magen

Inscription confirms ancient ring belonged to Pontius Pilate, man who ordered Jesus’ crucifixion

Professor Dark discovered that people in the area believed that the building was Jesus’ house from at least the 380s: His analysis also confirmed the building’s status as a first-century dwelling. No such case can be made for any other sites in the city: The archaeologist’s investigation of the two-story house revealed excellent craftsmanship and an understanding of rock that would be consistent with it having been built and owned by a tekton – the description of Joseph’s profession in the Greek gospels, which means that he was not only a carpenter, but also a stonemason or builder:

His fieldwork also indicates that a cave church decorated with mosaics was built next to the house’s remains in the fourth century. In the fifth century a church was built over both the house and the cave church and it was the largest church in Nazareth at the time: This church was elaborately decorated with marble and mosaics and it exactly matched a seventh-century description of the large Byzantine church that was said to have stood on the site of Jesus’ home and was an important pilgrimage destination:

In his book, ‘The Sisters of Nazareth Convent: A Roman-Period, Byzantine and Crusader Site in Central Nazareth’, Professor Dark probed the likelihood of memory of a building’s history being transmitted from the first century to the fourth century, when the first church was built at the site. “My conclusion is that, from anthropological evidence and studies of oral tradition, there’s absolutely no reason why they couldn’t have known,” he said:

(ETHIOPIA) JUST IN: Federal forces in Ethiopia have surrounded the Tigray region’s capital, after the country’s government gave the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) a 72-hour deadline to surrender accoridng to RT News #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.23: If the TPLF does not surrender within that time frame, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has threatened to begin a military offensive on the capital, amassing tanks and armed forces in the nearby city of Mekelle: Military figures had earlier told local media that anyone who chooses to remain in the city after the deadline has expired, without peacefully surrendering, will be shown “no mercy” when the assault begins: Sharing a statement on social media over the weekend, Abiy defended the military action, arguing that it was necessary to “ensure stability prevails” and that “citizens are free from harm and want.”

The Tigrayan government has not offered a response to the ultimatum, while international aid groups have expressed fear that the conflict will cause a humanitarian crisis in the country and surrounding parts of the Horn of Africa.

In the first two weeks of the conflict, hundreds were reportedly killed and tens of thousands were displaced, fleeing across the border into neighboring nations.

UN refugee agency warns of ‘full-scale’ humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia as conflict forces thousands to flee

The United Nations refugee agency said aid support on the ground was at risk of being overwhelmed due to the sheer volume of refugees trying to escape the fighting: By last week, more than 27,000 people had already fled the fighting and crossed into neighboring Sudan, with the numbers rising to about 4,000 a day since November 10, according to a spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees:

The recent conflict is the latest escalation between Abiy’s government and the TPLF, who have refused to cooperate since his election as prime minister two years ago: After Abiy postponed national elections in June over coronavirus concerns, the TPLF declared his government illegitimate, with the PM responding in force, accusing the Tigrayans of being a rebel movement:

(DOHA, Qatar.) #PeaceTalks Report: Pompeo praised the sides for sticking with the negotiations that could see them both striking a stable peace accord with the #Taliban terrorist group after decades of bloody violence that began again just hours after Kabul mortar attack #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.22: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held a daylong round of talks with Gulf Arab leaders and representatives from the Taliban on Saturday, conversations that come as the United States moves to pull its troops out of war-torn Afghanistan: Pompeo met with the Taliban’s senior leadership as part of ongoing negotiations hosted by the Qatari government in Doha: Washington Beacon reports

” The meetings came just hours after mortars struck several areas in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital—a stark reminder that peace negotiations could deteriorate at any point. The Taliban denied responsibility for the attack: As talks continue, the Trump administration is moving forward with plans to pull around 2,500 American troops from Afghanistan—a move that has been roundly criticized by both Democratic and Republican leaders. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a typical Trump administration ally, called the plan “a mistake.”

Pompeo also talked to leaders in Doha and the United Arab Emirates about the ongoing threat posed by Iran and Trump administration efforts in its final months to further tighten the economic noose on Tehran: Gulf Arab leaders are already nervous about a Biden administration due to its vow to reenter the landmark nuclear deal Iran and provide it with a new wave of cash assets. While the Trump administration has leaned into its ties with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, it is expected the Biden administration will pursue a policy centered on making Iran a more prominent regional player:

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) FBI Report: Special agents with the FBI Thursday morning arrested a Hollywood man on a federal charge alleging that he recklessly operated a drone that crashed into a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter according Breaking911 #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.23: The drone damaged the LAPD aircraft and the pilot was forced to initiate an emergency landing: The drone also damaged a vehicle when the unmanned aircraft fell from the sky after the crash: Andrew Rene Hernandez, 22, was arrested pursuant to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday that charges him with one count of unsafe operation of an unmanned aircraft:

Breaking911 https://ift.tt/3m8rO4l

According to the complaint filed in United States District Court, during the early morning hours of September 18, LAPD officers responded to a burglary call at a pharmacy in Hollywood: The responding officers requested air support, and an LAPD helicopter flew toward the scene. As the helicopter approached the pharmacy, the pilot saw the drone and attempted to evade the unmanned aircraft. Despite the evasive efforts, the drone stuck the helicopter, forcing the pilot to initiate an emergency landing. The drone damaged the helicopter’s nose, antenna and bottom cowlings. According to the complaint, “if the drone had struck the helicopter’s main rotor instead of the fuselage, it could have brought the helicopter down.”

LAPD officers located parts of the drone near the pharmacy and discovered a vehicle damaged by the drone as it fell from the sky: Further investigation, including a review of the drone’s camera and SD card, led to the identification of Hernandez as the drone’s operator:

The FBI executed additional search warrants in late October at Hernandez’s residence. Hernandez admitted to flying the drone on September 18 after he heard police vehicles and an approaching helicopter just after midnight: According to the complaint, Hernandez said he flew his drone “to see what was going on.” As the drone was ascending, Hernandez saw the drone “smacked” by the hovering police helicopter, and it fell to the ground at a nearby residence, the complaint states:

(EDINBURGH) #Coronavirus Report: More than two million people are spending their first day living under the toughest #Covid19 restrictions as town-centre streets are empty 5-weeks before Christmas #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Nov.22; Level four rules for 11 council areas came into force at 18:00 on Friday, when travel curbs in level three and four areas also became law: Non-essential shops, hospitality, hairdressers and gyms will remain closed until 11 December: Less than five weeks before Christmas, main shopping streets were unusually quiet:

#Coronavirus Report: #Covid19 in Scotland: Streets empty on day one of level 4 lockdown until Dec.11: just 14 days before Christmas Day according to BBC Scotland

Glasgow's Buchanan Street
Saturday afternoon in Glasgow’s Buchanan Street is rarely this quiet

The Scottish government has said the restrictions are necessary to drive down stubbornly high rates of the virus: Saturday’s daily coronavirus figures showed 887 positive cases and 37 newly-reported deaths in the past 24 hours. Across Scotland, 100 patients were in intensive care, a rise of 12 since Friday: Of the new cases, 234 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 246 in Lanarkshire, and 140 in Lothian.

‘Risks are not zero’

Nicola Sturgeon said on Friday that while infection rates have stabilised in recent weeks, they remained at a stubbornly high level in some areas: She said the new restrictions would help infection rates come down further before the Christmas period, paving the way for a possible easing: “ The fact is the fewer people who are in the population who have Covid by the time we get to Christmas, the lower the risk of people being infected with it during that period,” she said: “ It’s very important for me to be clear that the risks would not be zero – which is why we must be very careful about any relaxation over Christmas and people will have to think carefully themselves, even with any relaxation, about what they want to do or not.”…………

On Thursday, Ms Sturgeon said the chief medical officers of the UK nations had been tasked with developing a “concrete” proposal for household mixing at Christmas, details of which could be revealed next week: Ms Sturgeon also said the new travel restrictions were “vital” to ensure there is no need for a national lockdown.Staff outnumbered passengers at Queen Street Station as travel restrictions took effect: People in level three and four areas must not travel outside their council area, except for essential purposes such as work and healthcare, and people living elsewhere must not travel into these areas except for essential purposes: She urged Scots to abide by the new regulations, which could see a £60 fine levied against those who violate the rules unless they have a “reasonable excuse”, such as caring responsibilities or a hospital appointment:

National Clinical Director Jason Leitch said the actions people in level four areas take now will dictate which restrictions are in place in the new year: He said: “When you think about Christmas you should also think of the consequences that will have for January. If the virus spreads between households on Christmas day and Boxing day or whenever, of course, that will have a run-in effect to January: “ People will catch the virus at Christmas and then some of them will be hospitalised and be in intensive care in January. That’s what we need to avoid. The principal way to avoid that is to get prevalence down and have a safe Christmas.”

The stricter rules apply to 2.3 million people across East Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, West Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire, East and South Ayrshire, Stirling and West Lothian: Virus rates in these areas last week ranged from 158 new cases per 100,000 people in West Lothian to 277 in Glasgow – all of which were above the Scotland-wide rate of 140 cases per 100,000.

The UK government-funded centre will be operated by facilities company Mitie in the St Francis Community Centre in the Gorbals: It is the third to open in the city, and one of 14 operating across Scotland out of 22 promised by Westminster:

As bars and restaurants closed their doors once again under virus measures, opposition parties called for more support for the industry to help save jobs: Nicola Sturgeon has promised a £30m fund for businesses in level four areas: But Labour jobs spokesman Alex Rowley said the proposals fell short of what was required and he urged the first minister to bring forward proposals for more extensive support next week.
