(CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx.) Justice Dept Court Report: Third gang member sentenced to prison for series of truck stop ATM robberies and related assault #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Jan.10: The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Corpus Christi with assistance from sheriff’s offices in Live Oak, Angelina, Brazoria, Wharton, Medina and Cass Counties in Texas; and police departments in Angleton, Cleveland, Seguin and Lufkin, Texas, as well as Vinton, Louisiana.

#AceDailyNews DOJ Court Report: A third Houston-area gang member was ordered to federal prison Wednesday for his role in a string of ATM robberies at truck stops in Texas and Louisiana and for a related assault of a good Samaritan who tried to intervene in one of the robberies.

Christopher Bernard Brown, 39, was sentenced Jan. 5 in the Southern District of Texas on two counts of interference with commerce by threats or violence and ordered to serve 90 months in federal prison to be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. He must also pay restitution. Brown pleaded guilty to the charges Sept. 30, 2021.

Previously sentenced for their roles in the robberies and related assault were Wesley Jerome Davis, 28, and Kevin Wilson, 33, who both pleaded guilty July 29, 2021. Wilson was sentenced to 90 months in prison, while Davis was ordered to serve 60 months in prison. Thomas Alec Buckley, 26, has also been convicted for his role in the robberies and assault, but has yet to be sentenced.

At the sentencing hearing, the court heard of approximately 33 related truck stop robberies that occurred between May 29-Sept. 2019 that were part of the multi-district and interstate Hobbs Act conspiracy. The court also heard of the numerous employees and customers who were traumatized as a result of Brown’s and the others’ actions. During the robberies, they threatened or used physical force towards customers or employees to steal or attempt to steal ATMs and the currency inside the ATM from at least nine Love’s Travel Stops throughout Texas and Louisiana. Brown typically served as a scout or lookout while Davis, Wilson, Buckley or others wore masks and gloves and placed straps or chains around the ATMs. Then, a vehicle connected to the chains would accelerate to dislodge the bolted-down machines. Co-conspirators would lift the dislodged ATMs into the waiting vehicle and quickly drive away.

The attempts failed in Angleton, Natalia and Domino. However, the robbery crew was able to obtain monies from the stolen ATMs in Hungerford, Seguin, Lufkin, Cleveland, and Three Rivers as well as Vinton, Louisiana.

In the Three Rivers robbery, co-conspirators came into contact with Love’s employees or customers, at which time Brown stated, “What are you gonna do?!! What are you gonna do?!!” The masked or hooded suspects also made menacing gestures towards the employees. Love’s Travel Stop employees did not intervene with the men for fear of sustaining serious bodily injury.

In Seguin, a good Samaritan attempted to stop the ATM robbery, but Davis struck him twice, at which time he fell to the floor and suffered bodily injury from a head wound.

Brown will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. Buckley remains on bond pending sentencing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Manning is prosecuting the case.

(GHENT, Belgium.) JUST IN: Five teenagers have been arrested over the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl, who died less than a week later #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.03: Prosecutors say that three of the suspects, who are minors, are in a youth facility, while two men aged 18 and 19 have been arrested and are due to appear in court on Wednesday.

BELGIUM: Five arrested over alleged ‘gang rape’ of a 14yr-old-teenager: According to Belgian media, images of the attack were shared online and the prosecution has only confirmed that they are being investigated for “acts that occurred shortly before the death of the victim” The victim took her life four days later.

The cemetery in Ghent, Belgium
The attack took place at a graveyard in Ghent

According to Belgian media reports, the girl had arranged to meet a male friend at a cemetery in Ghent on 15 May. However, he allegedly arrived with the four other suspects and assaulted the victim. Images from the attack were also uploaded to social media.

“These images were the last straw for her… her entire world collapsed,” her father told Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

The mayor of the family’s hometown who also knew the victim spoke of his shock at the case.

“You don’t think something like this could happen in your municipality,” he said in an interview with Belgian website Het Laatste Nieuws.

The case has led to a strong response from Belgian politicians, with Secretary of State for Equality Sarah Schlitz vowing to take action to prevent images of sexual assault being shared online.

“The distribution of such images on social media is not just intolerable, but also totally illegal. It should simply not be possible,” she said, adding that her team would meet with representatives of social media companies to discuss moderation policies.

“Horrible. There are no words,” Belgian Justice Minister Vincent van Quickenborne wrote on Twitter.

“I call on victims of sexual violence: file a complaint,” he said, noting that help was available and that the justice system would “do everything” to find and punish perpetrators, as well as those who shared images of sexual assault.

Liesbet Stevens, an expert in gender equality, told VRT News that the assault “is unfortunately not an isolated case”, noting that around 200 gang rapes are reported in Belgium every year.

Overnight, the management company of the building said it suspended the staff members who witnessed the attack, pending an investigation.

“The Brodsky Organization condemns all forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia and violence against the Asian American,” the Brodsky Organization said in a statement. “The staff who witnessed the attack have been suspended pending an investigation in conjunction with their union.”

Dozens gathered in Queens on Monday night for a candlelight vigil honoring the lives lost in the Atlanta shooting and standing will all victims of hate.

“What kind of hate is displayed in this kind of attack?” said State Sen. John Liu.

“Asian Americans for too long in this country have been shamefully scapegoated because of ignorant fear,” said Rep. Grace Meng.

NYPD numbers show at least 31 anti-Asian hate crimes citywide so far in 2021. But the department admits crimes against Asian Americans have long gone underreported.

“We’re just starting to learn to speak up about something that’s been happening for as long as we can remember,” said Kim.

The Asian Hate Crimes Task Force told CBS2 bystanders too often do not intervene when witnessing an attack.

“Being silent is being complicit when we see our brothers and sisters being attacked,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards.

“It doesn’t get easier, but it’s helpful when people gather together,” said State Sen. Liu.

Starting this week, undercover Asian American police officers will be walking the streets with the purpose of preventing and responding to hate crimes.MORE

Meantime, investigators are asking anyone with information on these latest attacks to contact police.

(WASHINGTON) Justice Dept Report: A Pennsylvania & West Virginia man were arrested Sunday on criminal charges related to their alleged conspiring to injure officers and assaulting federal officers, among other charges #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Mar.17: According to court documents, Julian Elie Khater, 32, of State College, Pennsylvania, and George Pierre Tanios, 39, of Morgantown, West Virginia, were arrested on Sunday in connection with a complaint filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., charging them with conspiring to injure officers and assaulting federal officers, among other charges, on Jan. 6. Khater was arrested as he disembarked from an airplane at Newark Airport in New Jersey. Tanios was arrested at his residence in West Virginia:

Two Men Charged with Assaulting Federal Officers with Dangerous Weapon on January.06: ‘Defendants Sprayed U.S. Capitol Police Officers B. Sicknick and C. Edwards, and Metropolitan Police Department Officer D. Chapman with a Chemical Substance’

Khater and Tanios are each charged with one count of conspiracy to injure an officer; three counts of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon; one count of civil disorder; one count of obstructing or impeding an official proceeding; one count of physical violence on restricted grounds, while carrying dangerous weapon and resulting in significant bodily injury; and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct, act of physical violence on Capitol grounds.

According to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, Khater and Tanios were at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and were observed in video footage working together to assault law enforcement officers with an unknown chemical substance by spraying officers directly in the face and eyes.  During the investigation, it is alleged that law enforcement discovered video that depicted Khater asking Tanios to “give me that bear s*it.” Tanios replied, “Hold on, hold on, not yet, not yet… it’s still early.”  Khater then retrieved a canister from Tanios’ backpack and walked through the crowd to within a few steps of the police perimeter.  The video shows Khater with his right arm up high in the air, appearing to be holding a canister in his right hand and aiming it at the officers’ direction while moving his right arm from side to side.  The complaint affidavit states that Officers Sicknick, Edwards, and Chapman, who were all standing within a few feet of Khater, each reacted to being sprayed in the face.  The officers retreated, bringing their hands to their faces and rushing to find water to wash out their eyes.

The FBI’s Washington Field Office, with assistance from the FBI Pittsburgh and Newark Field Offices, the United States Capitol Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the case.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with valuable assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey are prosecuting the case.
