#AceWorldNews – MOSCOW – May 23 – Russia has to take retaliatory measures as NATO is building up its forces near the country’s borders, General Valery Gerasimov, the chief of general staff of the Russian armed forces, said on Friday.

#AceWorldNews – NATO – May 07 – NATO’s top military commander says the alliance must consider permanently stationing troops in parts of Eastern Europe as a result of tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove said on May 6 that the issue will be discussed by NATO commanders, defense ministers, and foreign ministers in the run-up to a summit in Wales in early September.
NATO’s short-term agreements to rotate land, sea, and air forces in places like the Baltics, Romania, and Poland are expiring at the end of 2014.
The alliance has deployed additional forces in the Baltics and Poland in response to Russia’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula and the deployment of tens of thousands of Russian troops on Russia’s border with Ukraine.
NATO officials have said recently that Russia can no longer be viewed as a potential partner but rather must be seen as an adversary.

The deployment comes at a time when NATO is boosting its presence in eastern members of the alliance to allay concerns over what Western officials describe as Russia’s interference in Ukraine.
At a ceremony, Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas praised NATO’s decision to deploy planes to the country, saying it will boost regional security.
Until now, NATO’s sole Baltic air base was in Siauliai, in northern Lithuania, from where alliance planes have carried out Baltic air patrols since 2004.
On April 28, some 150 U.S. troops also arrived in Estonia, part of a 600-strong force that Washington sent to Poland and the Baltics. (AFP/AP)

“Our defence and will be revised and strengthened,” said Anders Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO, to press in Brussels.
He added that NATO had not yet reached a decision about the possible deployment of troops in Eastern Europe.

#AceWorldNews – MOSCOW – April 07 – (Interfax) – The three-month suspension by Lithuania and Latvia of broadcasts to their territory from Russian television channel RTR-Planeta is “indisputably a political decision that is beyond the common sense of journalism,” said the head of international relations at Russian state television and radio company VGTRK, Pyotr Fyodorov.
Fyodorov told the Vesti.ru website that the decision is questionable from a legal point of view because RTR-Planeta holds a European Union license for broadcasting in the Baltic countries.
“Here is an attempt, accusing Russia of one-sided coverage of events, to do the same by only leaving access to information from Ukrainian media or from the media of those Baltic states, whose sympathies are obvious to us,” he said.

Mull’s announcement comes just three days after US Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to the Polish capital of Warsaw.
Biden’s trip was aimed at reassuring that America remains a “steadfast ally” to Poland and the Baltic States after they expressed anxiety over the events in the Crimea, which signed a treaty of accession to the Russian Federation on Tuesday.

#AceWorldNews – Tallinn/Paris(Reuters) – The European Union will begin to prepare a new response to the actions of Russia in Ukraine, if Moscow does not show signs of willingness to ease the tension by the end of the week, on Tuesday said foreign ministers of Germany and France.
Russian forces have strengthened in the Ukrainian Crimea on the eve of Moscow-backed March 16 referendum on the future of the peninsula. Government in Kiev and his supporters in the West regarded the planned plebiscite as illegitimate.
“If the output will be no visible changes in the behaviour of Russia, then on Monday at the European Council we will have to discuss the next step up,” – said Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a visit to the Baltic States, which are included in the European Union and Ukraine are concerned about what is happening.
“We do not want confrontation, but the actions of the Russian side, unfortunately, confront us with the need to prepare, as I just said,” – said Steinmeier reporters in Tallinn.
His French counterpart Laurent Fabius, in turn, said that sanctions could come into force this week, if Moscow does not respond to calls from the European Union.
“The only legitimate vote will be on May 25 presidential elections in Ukraine. Voting March 16 will not have legitimacy,” – said Fabius radio station France Inter. He called the Russian annexation of Crimea illegal.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is at the cutting edge of the strategy of “engagement” of the Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the negotiation process with the same time as the tug of war between Russia and the West resulted in the most serious confrontation since the Cold War.
