Searches started at around 10am after a cargo ship reported that a boat carrying around 40 people was in difficulty off the coast of Dunkirk, with some people already overboard.

An unconscious person taken aboard the cargo ship’s lifeboat and transferred onto a French Navy vessel was later airlifted to hospital in Calais.

He is believed to have suffered cardio-respiratory arrest and was evacuated aboard a Belgian Air Force helicopter.

Several others were also hoisted aboard the aircraft as the migrant boat was sinking while more were rescued by nearby fishing vessels.

They were all transferred onto the French Navy’s Flamant patrol boat, which headed for the port of Dunkirk.

Search and rescue operations remained under way in the Dover Strait, with a French Navy helicopter continuing to scour the area.

Following days of bad weather, lighter conditions today have seen a flurry of crossing attempts.

The latest bids to reach the UK come after French authorities intercepted at least 108 people trying to cross the Channel yesterday, with one person having to be airlifted to hospital in Dunkirk.

More than 10,000 people including children have made the dangerous sea journey from France so far this year.

This is considerably higher than the 8,410 people who made the crossing during 2020.

Among them were Rasoul Iran-Nejad and his wife Shiva Mohammad Panahi, who died along with their three children when their boat capsized on October 27.

Their 15-month-old son Artin was reported missing following the tragedy and it was not until June this year that police confirmed a body found on the Norwegian coast was that of the young boy.

(LONDON) NCA REPORT: Arrest of a man WANTED in connection with the smuggling of ILLEGAL migrants found dead in a lorry in Essex in October 2019 #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.19: He is wanted by the Belgian authorities who allege he was a member of a people smuggling network moving migrants through Belgium and France and into the UK in the back of lorries:

ESSEX LORRY PARK DEATHS CASE: People smuggling suspect wanted in connection with Essex lorry deaths is arrested by the NCA: The Vietnamese national, who at this stage is not being named, was detained at a supermarket petrol station just of the A66 in Middlesbrough around 1pm this afternoon (17 June).

Image showing the 39 migrants that lost their lives.

He is suspected of running safe houses in Brussels where the migrants stayed before their fatal journey. He is also accused of organising their onward transport in taxis to the collection point in France where they were stowed in the rear of the refrigerated lorry.

A Belgian investigating magistrate issued an arrest warrant in December, suspecting that he was now in the UK and had links to the Birmingham area.

However NCA investigators were able to track him down to a location in Middlesbrough where he was detained today, in an operation supported by the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU).

He will now appear before Westminster Magistrates where extradition proceedings will begin.

The NCA’s Head of Organised Immigration Crime Operations, Miles Bonfield, said: This is another significant arrest in terms of the identifying those involved in the events which led to the tragic deaths of those 39 migrants: The individual detained today is suspected by the Belgian authorities of having played a key role in placing at least ten migrants inside that lorry: Working closely with partners in the UK, Europe and beyond we are determined to do all we can to get justice for the families of those who died, and disrupt and dismantle the cruel organised criminal networks involved in people smuggling.”

Earlier this year seven people were given jail terms totalling more than 92 years for their roles in the events which led to the Essex deaths, including four men who were found guilty of manslaughter. This followed an extensive investigation led by Essex Police and supported by the NCA.

Another Vietnamese national, a man known as Ngo Sy Tai, was arrested by the NCA in December 2020 – he is also wanted by the Belgian authorities for his role in smuggling the victims. He awaits extradition.

(CHINA) JUST IN: Chinese spies could be able to access “sensitive” information in Belgium through investments made into the Liège Airport by the Jack Ma-owned e-commerce giant Alibaba, the country’s justice minister admitted this week #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.10: Appearing before a hearing of the House Justice Committee, Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne said that “Chinese intelligence service agents could have access to sensitive and secure areas of the airport”.

Chinese Spies Could Be Using Jack Ma’s Alibaba to Infiltrate Major EU Airport, Claims Belgian Justice Minister

“Alibaba will also have to obey the Chinese security apparatus in the event that the latter wishes to have access to potentially sensitive commercial and personal data held by Alibaba in the context of its activities in Liège,” the minister added in comments reported on Friday by the local news outlet 7sur7.

Quickenborne referenced the 2017 National Intelligence Law, which mandates that Chinese companies allow the communist government access to their data, no matter whether such a company has overseas operations, such as Alibaba, which uses Liège as a distribution hub for shipping goods around Europe.

He also pointed to the 2016 cybersecurity law in China, which he said gives the power to Chinese intelligence operatives to “copy data, including user data. This law applies to any company that provides service via the internet, including Alibaba.”

The Flemish politician claimed that the Liège airport, which is outside the city of Maastricht, is of critical strategic importance to the Chinese Communist Party, saying: “This interest is not limited to intelligence and security purposes but can be viewed within a broader political and economic framework.”

He said that “the future economic importance of Liège Airport to China cannot be underestimated”, explaining that Beijing intends to build an additional 215 new airports by 2035 in order to expand its global economic reach.

Quickenborne also said that the risk of China attempting to use its economic pressure on politicians through projects like the Liège Airport “certainly” exists.

The Southern China Morning Post, which was bought out by the Alibaba Group in 2016, reported that the airport in Belgium “is the Western Europe linchpin of Alibaba’s global network of logistics centres, known as the electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP).”

The paper went on to say that the airport represents one of the six global logistics centres set up by the Amazon-style Chinese company.

Van Quickenborne said that while the European Union mandated last October that each member state examine foreign investment, which might impact national security, the Belgian government has so far failed to implement any such measures.

He said that the country must now take action or accept “the risk associated with large investments and the taking of a dominant position on the market by Chinese companies and therefore, by extension, by the Chinese authorities”.

The Chinese embassy in Belgium denied what it termed “baseless allegations”, claiming that the Chinese Communist Party does not “demand Chinese enterprises to engage in activities that breach local laws or regulations”.

“China never presents a threat to Belgium,” the embassy said, adding: “The cooperation between the two nations is built on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual benefits and win-win relationship.”

The power that the Chinese government holds over corporations within the country was put on full display when Jack Ma, the founder of the Alibaba Group, mysteriously disappeared from public view for months after making critical remarks about the regulatory state in China in October of last year.

In January, Breitbart News reported that the Chinese state had allegedly pressured Jack Ma to hand over consumer data to the government, adding further speculation to the true nature of his mysterious disappearance.

Three months later, regulators imposed a record $2.78 billion (£1.99bn) fine on the company for supposed antitrust violations.

The Chinese state overtook the United States as the European Union’s top trading partner in 2020, as ties between Brussels and the communist dictatorship in Beijing continue to deepen. https://t.co/RzgCixukoq

` Police in Marseilles Arrest Mehdi Nemmouche for Shooting in Brussels ‘

#AceNewsServices – MARSEILLES – June 01 – Mehdi Nemmouche, 29, was arrested by police in Marseilles, in the South of France, investigation sources told AFP.

The suspect was carrying an AK-47 gun and a pistol of the same type used in the May- 24 shooting near the Jewish Museum in Brussels which left four people dead, including two Israelis, and one person from France and another from Belgium.

The Belgian authorities believe it may have been “an anti-Semitic terrorist act.” Nemmouche is suspected to have ties to radicals in Syria.

(CNN) – Images from the museum in Brussels showed the gunman behind Saturday’s deadly attack approaching the building, opening fire, and walking away.

He used an AK-47 assault rifle to carry out the shooting, police have said.

(Photographs and video released by Belgian police showed the man wearing a cap and blue shirt, carrying two bags over his shoulder)

(The images do not show his face clearly)

The shooter left on foot after the attack and headed toward a different part of down-town Brussels before he disappeared, according to police.

Terrorism has not been ruled out, Van Wymersch said Monday.
