A leaked email thread from Hillary Clinton’s staff and lawyers reveals that her team disagreed over elements of her #Benghazi testimony and sought to achieve the ‘moral high ground’ ahead of the hearing.

The email chain, released in the latest batch of leaked emails from her campaign chair John Podesta, began on October 16, 2015 and ended on October 20, 2015 – just two days before the former Secretary of State testified in front of the House Select Committee.

US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, US Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith and CIA contractors Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed during an Islamic militant attack on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya in 2012. Clinton was Secretary of State at the time.

The fatalities prompted a Congressional hearing into the incident and into alleged security lapses at the facility ahead of the attack.

Emails released by Wikileaks on Saturday reveal Clinton staff debated how best to position Clinton’s opening statement for the Benghazi hearing in October 2015.

In one email, David E Kendall from law firm Williams & Connolly advised changing the statement’s description of the Accountability Review Board from “independent” to “non-partisan”. He also suggested adding more numbers to back up the assertion that “diplomacy is dangerous”.

Both changes were taken on board and appear in the final statement presented before the committee.

Staff differed over the inclusion of the term, “backs of dead Americans”. Mandy Grunwald from Grunwald Communications wrote that she didn’t mind the term, “because we need a bit of moral outrage,” while Clinton’s speechwriter Dan Schwerin noted the line comes directly from Clinton’s memoir, “so maybe a good idea to tweak slightly anyhow.”

Grunwald, who serves as Clinton’s media adviser, added in another email that it “seems odd to put the tributes to the four guys into this statement, since it is mostly the repackaged testimony.”

We can’t overdo the tributes to them and I think they should be done in person,” she said.

Legal representatives also emphasized the importance of questions about balancing risk, recommending that Clinton’s answers show “that the known risks were being balanced with the reasons for being there” and risk assessments were regularly made with input from people on the ground.

#AceNewsServices – LIBYA(Benghazi) – October 19 – The governments of the US and four European allies – the UK, France, Germany and Italy – have called for an end to the ongoing violence in Libya that they “strongly condemn”.

Their joint statement, released on Saturday, said that there was “no military solution” to the crisis and, in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution 2174 on ceasefire in Libya, the countries “stand ready to use individual sanctions.”

Dozens of people have been killed recently during three days of conflict in the eastern city of Benghazi in fighting between Islamist militias and government forces.

LIBYA: ‘ Islamist’s Could Use Stolen to Order Jet-Liners in Terrorist Acts Mirroring 911 Attacks ‘

#AceNewsServices – LIBYA (Tripoli) – October 06 – Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jet-liners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa the Free Beacon reported on September 02 2014.

' Libyan Commercial Jetliners Stolen to Order'

‘ Libyan Commercial Jetliners Stolen to Order’

“There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing,” said one official. “We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes.”

' Libyan Commercial Jetliners Stole to Order '

‘ Libyan Commercial Jetliners Stole to Order ‘

The official said the aircraft are a serious counter-terrorism concern because reports of terrorist control over the Libyan airliners came three weeks before the 13th anniversary of 9/11 attacks and the second anniversary of the Libyan terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi.

Four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed in the Benghazi attack, which the Obama administration initially said was the result of a spontaneous demonstration against an anti-Muslim video.

A senior State Department counter-terrorism official declined to comment on reports of the stolen jet-liners.

A second State department official sought to downplay the reports. “We can’t confirm that,” he said.

Meanwhile, officials said Egyptian military forces appear to be preparing to intervene in Libya to prevent the country from becoming a failed state run by terrorists, many with ties to al Qaeda.

Libya remains an oil-rich state and if the country is taken over completely by Islamist extremists, U.S. counter-terrorism officials believe it will become another terrorist safe haven in the region.

The officials said U.S. intelligence agencies have not confirmed the aircraft theft following the takeover of Tripoli International Airport in late August, and are attempting to locate all aircraft owned by two Libyan state-owned airline companies, as security in the country continued to deteriorate amid fighting between Islamists and anti-Islamist militias.

The new toll – a dramatic increase from the previously reported seven deaths – also says that more than 70 were wounded.

While several troops died from the blasts of three car bombs that drove into an army checkpoint near Benghazi airport, the majority perished in fighting in the same area.

The deadly clashes come amid the offensive of Shura Revolutionary Council militants, including Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia, who launched a fresh assault on the airport on Wednesday.

' Benghazi Attack Suspect Abu Khatallah Pleads Not Guilty to Criminal Charges During First Appearance in Criminal Court '

#AceBreakingNews – UNITED STATES (Washington) – June 28 – Nearly two weeks after his capture in Libya, a key suspect in the 2012 deadly attack on the American diplomatic outpost in Benghazi pleaded not guilty to criminal charges during his first federal court appearance Saturday.

Ahmed Abu Khatallah, an alleged senior leader of the Benghazi branch of the terror group Ansar al-Sharia, had been detained and questioned on a U.S. warship and was transported to be prosecuted in a D.C. federal court, where security was heightened Saturday.

Khatallah — who faces criminal charges in the deaths of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans — appeared in court at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Looking haggard with a long gray beard and bushy mane of gray hair, he entered a plea of not guilty through his court appointed public defender Michelle Peterson.

In a voice barely audible in the second-floor courtroom, Khatallah identified himself by name. And when asked if he understood his interpreter, he responded, “Yes.”

He spoke no more during the hearing which lasted less than 10 minutes.

Hillary Clinton talks about Benghazi

Has she just blew her chance at Commander in chief?

In a new memoir, Hillary Clinton is expected to offer her most detailed account yet of the deadly 2012 attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, which could become nettlesome should she run for president in two years’ time. The former secretary of state rebukes Republicans over the issue in her book, Hard Choices, part of which was leaked to a political website on Friday. She says she will “not be part of a political slugfest on the backs of dead Americans”, according to Politico, which obtained the chapter, entitled Benghazi: Under Attack. “Those who exploit this tragedy over and over as a political tool minimize the sacrifice of those who served our country,” she writes.

Bill and Chelsea Clinton have stayed tight-lipped on ‘Hillary 2016’

Ms Clinton also says an anti-Islamic video that triggered protests in Egypt was “indeed a factor” in the Benghazi incident. Conservatives accuse the Obama administration of misleading the public and Congress about the nature of the attack to avoid political backlash in the weeks before the presidential election. The September 11 2012 assault on the US diplomatic compound killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Ms Clinton’s memoir will be published on June 10. A week later she will sit down for an interview with Fox News, which has extensively covered the Benghazi affair, it was announced on Thursday.

Hillary Clinton testified on Benghazi in January last year

Meanwhile, speculation has been swirling among Washington DC’s political classes over a private lunch between President Barack Obama and Ms Clinton on Thursday. The White House confirmed the two – rivals for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination – had dined alone. But aides on both sides refused to say what they talked about. Anticipating Ms Clinton’s forthcoming memoir, the Republican National Committee said in a statement on Friday: “The more Americans learn about hard choices like these, the less likely they will be to choose Clinton in any future election. A book isn’t going to change that.” Earlier this month, the House Republican leadership controversially launched a select committee to investigate Benghazi. Ms Clinton has already taken responsibility for the assault, calling it the darkest hour of her career.

` Libya Gunmen Shot Dead a Newspaper Editor Who was Outspoken Against Islamist’s ‘

#AceWorldNews – BENGHAZI – May 27 – Gunmen shot dead a newspaper editor who was an outspoken critic of Islamists in Libya’s volatile east on Monday, in a targeted killing that came hours after he warned the Islamist-led parliament of a civil war if it didn’t bow to widespread demands to disband and allow early elections.

(Top News)

Libya is deeply polarized, with a renegade general having launched an armed campaign against Islamists, who dominate the elected parliament and who on Sunday approved a new prime minister days after thousands held demonstrations demanding the assembly halt sessions.

The demonstrators also accused it of financing Islamist militias.

A security official said the 50-year-old Moftah Abu Zeid, chief editor of the Brnieq newspaper, was attacked while driving down a main street in the eastern city of Benghazi, cradle of the 2011 revolt that toppled and killed longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi.

Over the last three years the city has seen near-daily attacks targeting security forces, activists, judges and moderate clerics.

` Benghazi Death Toll Rises to 79 People Amid Heavy Clashes Between Islamist’s and Troops ‘

#AceWorldNews – BENGHAZI – May 18 – The death toll from heavy clashes between Islamist militias and troops loyal to a rogue Libyan general in Benghazi has risen to 79, an official at the country’s health ministry said on Sunday, Xinhua reports.

More than 141 people have been injured in the violence.

On Friday, the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar shelled many Islamist militant bases, including those of Ansar Al-Sharia and the February 17 Brigade. Haftar said the operation, dubbed ‘Dignity of Libya,’ was meant to purge Libya’s second largest city of terrorists.

However, Libya’s interim authorities described Haftar’s move as a “coup.”

` House of Democratic Leaders Cannot Help but Criticise Investigation of Benghazi ‘

#AceGuestNews – BENGHAZI – May 10 – House Democratic leaders have been unstinting in their criticism of the select committee established this week to investigate the aftermath of the 2012 attack on an American compound in Benghazi, Libya. Now they are facing a touch choice about whether to join it, cautiously weighing which strategy would be riskier politically and whether their instinct to boycott the select committee might just give it more power in the end.

 Nancy Pelosi

Democratic leaders have called the new committee “a political ploy,” a “stunt,” a “sham,” a “waste of taxpayer dollars” and, in the words of White House spokesman Jay Carney, “a blatantly political and partisan effort.” This week, two arms of the party, the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committeelaunched a coordinated messaging blitz to undermine the committee and cast Republicans as political opportunists who have established the select committee only because of their interest in raising money and exciting the GOP base before the 2014 midterm elections.

Should Democrats now take part in this thing they view as a non-serious exercise in pandering to the right? House Democrats met behind closed doors Friday morning to discuss their options, but emerged with no clear answer on how to proceed.

In the case of reopening an investigation into the events of Sept. 11, 2012, in Libya, Democrats are stuck in a damned-if-they-do, damned-if-they-don’t scenario. That’s left the caucus torn on what to do.

There’s a vocal chorus of Democrats urging Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to boycott the committee altogether. Appointing members to the committee would lend credibility to the investigation, they fear, and it would force Democrats to risk being pawns in a Republican political game.

“If you’re going to have a hanging,” said Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn, one of the leading opponents to participating, “don’t ask me to bring the noose.”

Democrats point to the fact that four other bipartisan committees have already investigated the Benghazi attack and that one of those lines of inquiry — the Government Oversight Committee’s investigation — remains ongoing.

John Boehner, Nancy Pelosi, George Walker Bush.

But if Democrats don’t appoint panel members — the resolution the House approved Thursday night would give them five slots on the committee — they will give up having any authority over the process and the messaging from each hearing. Not participating would grant Republicans monopoly control over the tone of the hearings and the information provided during the proceedings. Republicans would be the only lawmakers posing questions to the witnesses. Democrats would risk of having entire news cycles dominated by Republican-driven messaging.

“We need to be there to be sure that when Republicans abuse their power, point it out then and there that they’re abusing their power,” California Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman told National Journal.

Democrats, then, face a choice: Risk legitimizing a Republican-led hearing they think is a charade, or grant total control of the content and the message to Republicans. It’s a decision they’re not ready to make.

“We need to make a judgement about how dangerous they can be about their misrepresentation of the facts of the committee,” Pelosi told reporters Friday after her meeting with the caucus.

For now, Democratic leaders say they will withhold judgment until they’re satisfied with negotiations with Boehner over how the hearings will be conducted. Members of Pelosi’s staff have been in ongoing talks with Boehner’s over the role the Democratic members would play if they chose to join the hearing. At issue, Pelosi said Friday, is whether Democratic committee members will have a say when it comes to issuing subpoenas, calling witnesses and releasing documents to the public. Pelosi said she would base her decision on the outcome of talks with Boehner over the next several days.

This week’s round of talks did not bode well for a speedy resolution. Pelosi on Friday rejected a proposed “Memorandum of Understanding” from Boehner’s staff that outlined ground rules, calling them “fundamentally unfair” in a letter sent to Boehner. Pelosi’s letter indicated, however, that she would be open to further negotiations.

Republicans, meanwhile, aren’t waiting for Democrats to make a decision. On Friday, Boehner announced the names of the seven Republicans who had been appointed to the committee, which will be chaired by South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, a 16-year veteran prosecutor. The other members include Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo, Illinois Rep. Peter Roskam, Indiana Rep. Susan Brooks, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, Alabama Rep. Martha Roby and Georgia Rep. Lynn Westmoreland.

“I  expect this committee to carry out an investigation worthy of the American lives lost in Benghazi,” Boehner said in a statement. “I also urge my Democratic colleagues to treat this tragedy with the proper respect and appoint members so that we can finally, on a bipartisan basis, get answers, provide accountability, and help deliver justice.”

` Libya’s Colonel Ibrahim Sensussi Reportedly Assassinated in his Car by Unidentified Gunman ‘

#AceWorldNews – TRIPOLI – May 08 – The head of intelligence in eastern region of Libya, Colonel Ibrahim Senussi, was reportedly assassinated on Thursday afternoon.

His car was shot at near the Benghazi medical college, and Senussi tried to escape but was shot again some 200 meters farther along the road, this time fatally, the Libya Herald said. Senussi was not identified by name, but was introduced as intelligence chief when he spoke on Libya’s Awalan TV two days ago.

He said terrorist groups were targeting anyone who had been trained abroad since the revolution, accusing Ansar Al-Sharia of being behind much of the violence in the city, the paper said.

#AceBreakingNews – WASHINGTON – May 06 – (AP) Secretary of State John Kerry says he will comply with “whatever responsibilities” he has to Congress in answering questions about the attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

But he was silent on whether he would appear at a May 21 hearing under subpoena.

In his first public comments on the matter, Kerry said Tuesday that he was surprised to have been subpoenaed to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform because the panel had not first invited him to appear.

Kerry aides have said that he has previously scheduled travel plans and will be in Mexico on May 21.

Kerry did not mention his travel plans but said the State Department would respond because it has “absolutely nothing to hide.”

` Nine Libyan Soldiers Killed as Islamist Fighters tried to Storm the Benghazi City Security HQ ‘

#AceNewsServices – BENGHAZI – LIBYA – May 02 – (Reuters) – Nine Libyan soldiers were killed on Friday when Islamist fighters tried to storm the Benghazi city security headquarters in an attack authorities blamed on the militant group Ansar al-Sharia.

Libya’s weak central government is struggling to control armed groups, militias and brigades of former rebels who helped oust long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 civil war and now refuse to disarm.

The dead were soldiers of a special forces unit, the Tripoli government said, for the first time openly blaming Ansar al-Sharia, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States.

“Armed brigades, including those called Ansar al-Sharia and other criminal groups, attacked the security headquarters in Benghazi with light and heavy weapons ” a government statement said.

Special forces have often clashed with the heavily-armed militant group in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, but the government with its nascent army had been reluctant to name it publicly for fear of provoking tensions.

Huge explosions could be heard during a fire-fight in the early morning that lasted more than an hour. Special forces later secured the headquarters, near the city centre.

Helicopters and war planes were flying over Benghazi in the afternoon.

Occasional gunfire and smaller explosions could still be heard during the day. As many as 15 more troops were also injured in the attack.

The bodies of two soldiers, kidnapped by militants during the attack, were found later bearing signs of torture, a medical source said.

Benghazi emails suggest White House aide involved in prepping Rice for ‘video’ explanation

I will leave people to read the emails and come to their own conclusions

Jay Carney fumbles on bombshell email showing how the White House steered Benghazi terror-attack narrative toward an anti-Islam video
Ben Rhodes, the president’s deputy national security adviser, wrote three days after the terror attack about coaching then-UN Ambassador Susan Rice for upcoming TV appearances
Rice falsely told five different Sunday talk-show audiences that the devastation in Benghazi was the result of anti-America protests that spiraled out of control
Demonstrations in other Middle East cities that week were reportedly sparked by a crude anti-Islam video, which Rice, Obama and Hillary Clinton all blamed for Benghazi
Rhodes’ email said that a prep session with Rice would prepare her ‘to underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy’
Jay Carney insisted that Rhodes was writing generally about protests in the Muslim world, and that his email ‘was explicitly not about Benghazi’
But the State Department included the same document in a batch of materials it released to a congressional committee on April 17, writing that it was ‘responsive’ to its subpoena for Benghazi-related files

Newly released emails on the Benghazi terror attack suggest a senior White House aide played a central role in preparing former U.N. ambassador Susan Rice for her controversial Sunday show appearances — where she wrongly blamed protests over an Internet video.
More than 100 pages of documents were released to the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. Among them was a Sept. 14, 2012, email from Ben Rhodes, an assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for strategic communications.

The Rhodes email, with the subject line: “RE: PREP Call with Susan: Saturday at 4:00 pm ET,” was sent to a dozen members of the administration’s inner circle, including key members of the White House communications team such as Press Secretary Jay Carney. In the email, Rhodes specifically draws attention to the anti-Islam Internet video, without distinguishing whether the Benghazi attack was different from protests elsewhere.

The email lists the following two goals, among others: “To underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy.” “To reinforce the President and Administration’s strength and steadiness in dealing with difficult challenges.” The email goes on to state that the U.S. government rejected the message of the Internet video. “We find it disgusting and reprehensible. But there is absolutely no justification at all for responding to this movie with violence,” the email stated.
