(LONDON) BTP County Lines Taskforce Report: A week of vital interventions were made to safeguard vulnerable people and large quantities of drugs were seized on the rail network as they took part in a national week of enhanced action to disrupt their activity #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.23: Coordinated by the force’s dedicated County Lines Taskforce, the week (11–17 October) saw officers work with regional police forces on operations at key stations and train routes across the UK:

#AceNewsDesk reports on a BTP Co-Ordinated TaskForces Operation to safeguard children against harmful drugs which were seized in a week of enhanced action to tackle County Lines with 41-arrests made following on from earlier this month three people appeared at court charged in connection to offences under the Modern Slavery Act and drugs supply after a 16-year-old boy was found in possession of Class A drugs on the railway.

Cash seizure.jpg

OPERATION NOTES: These included a mix of plain-clothed and uniformed officers alongside drugs dogs and metal detection arches, to remove harmful drugs and dangerous weapons from the railway and communities: Across the seven-day period BTP conducted 88 operations, half of which were joint with regional police forces: In total 41 people were arrested, and officers seized 52 different amounts of drugs, £50k in cash, 43 phones and removed 32 dangerous weapons from the railway: They also safeguarded 14 vulnerable children and adults, visited a cuckooed address and seized one ‘deal line’ – a mobile phone linked to selling drugs.

Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams, BTP’s County Lines Taskforce lead, said: “These results are testament to the dedicated work of my team in partnership with our police colleagues and reminds criminals that the railway is not a viable option to move drugs, or indeed exploited persons, between locations: Drugs they distribute into communities ruin lives and we are continually developing and sharing our intelligence picture, to vary our tactics and dismantle their criminal operations: This coordinated week provided us with the opportunity to shine a light on our proactive operational work and also highlight the ‘Look Closer’ campaign, which we developed alongside The Children’s Society: It aims to raise awareness of child exploitation and encourages rail staff and the public to spot the signs that a person is being exploited and to always report their concerns to us: If you spot the signs of someone being exploited on the railway, text us on 61016. No report is too small or trivial – we will always take you seriously.”

James Simmonds-Read, National Programme Manager at The Children’s Society’s Prevention programme, said: “Predators groom children with offers of cash, gifts, drugs and alcohol, friendship and status – then use terrifying threats and violence to exploit them to carry drugs in ‘county lines’ operations or for sexual or labour exploitation: Young people may not ask for help because they have been manipulated into thinking they are making a choice or because they are too scared to speak out. We must not hold children responsible for preventing their own exploitation but should instead work together as a society to prevent it from happening to them: BTP’s County Lines Taskforce – a police team dedicated to tackling organised criminals using the railway to transport drugs – was setup with Home Office funding in December 2019: A key aim of the team is to identify and safeguard vulnerable children and adults often exploited by these criminals to transport drugs and cash between import and export locations.

To date, the Taskforce has made more than 1,500 arrests, seized nearly 1,000 lots of drugs, made 85 referrals to the National Referral Mechanism for Safeguarding and secured 18 charges under the Modern Slavery Act.

(LONDON) MET REPORT: At least 119 people have been arrested following a three day, cross-police force operation to tackle violence and associated criminality #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.21: Officers used Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology along main roads in and around London, as well as in violence hotspots, to target vehicles which activated the technology, showing a link to violence and drug crimes.

#AceDailyNews reports that more than 100 arrests in violence and drugs crack-down as officers from the MET teamed together with six other police forces: Surrey; Kent; Essex; Hertfordshire; Thames Valley; and British Transport Police, to disrupt and prevent violence, drugs and gang activity.

19 October 2021 17:40

More than 100 arrests in violence and drugs crack-down

Youth workers from the charity Bounce Back, who interact with young offenders offering support and guidance to help them find ways out of criminal lifestyles, also joined the operation, working in dedicated custody suites providing immediate intervention.

The operation, which ran from 12-14 October, resulted in (MPS only):

  • 119 arrests for knives and drugs offences
  • 18 knives/weapons recovered
  •  A number of drug seizures, including a cannabis factory
  • £5,795 cash seized, with an additional individual seizure of €451,000
  • 45 vehicles seized.

Inspector Pete Luciano, of the Violent Crime Taskforce, said: “Our number one priority is tackling violence and the drivers which fuel it – we know this includes drugs supply. The use of ANPR technology is a valuable tactic we use to target criminals bringing drugs and weapons onto the streets of London. Operations like this form part of the wider work being carried out across the Met to tackle violence in all its forms: officers are running bespoke operations alongside day-to-day activity, to make communities safer: We are working alongside other police forces and sharing intelligence across borders to intercept criminals using the road networks. My message is clear: if you are involved in the supply of drugs or exploitation of others, we will identify you; stop you and arrest you: Crucially during this operation we were joined by a youth worker who supported individuals on the cusp of violence. This meant young people received instant support, independent of police. Operations like this, which include a collaborative approach, can have a real impact on finding longer-term solutions for those engaging in criminality.” ……….It is absolutely critical that we, along with our partners, drive down violent crime in London – this is the top priority for all in the Met………….Our plans are strong and officers are using a range of tactics from prevention and diversion activities to enforcement. Our continued efforts are starting to have a collective impact, with data showing positive reductions across serious violent crime categories.

This year to September 2021 (CYTD), compared to the same period prior to the pandemic in 2019, has seen:

  • Homicides decrease by 10%
  • Knife crime decrease by 32%
  • Knife crime with injury decrease by 20%
  • Knife Injury (victims under 25 and non-domestic abuse) decrease by 27%
  • Personal robbery decrease by 45%
  • Personal robbery knife injury decrease by 36%
  • Gun crime decrease by 36%
  • Lethal barrel discharges decrease by 28%

Despite these reductions, we are not complacent and know there is more to do. Our determination to tackle these crimes remains strong and we will continue to work with our partners, and use every power and tactic available, to serve and protect our communities.

Communities also have a vital role to play in tackling violent crime and we urge anyone who may have information to tell us, so that we can tackle violence together. We need information about crime or those who carry a weapon, or those that exploit people for gain or revenge, while putting young people’s lives at risk. Community intelligence can be used to great effect to not only detect, but also prevent crime, keep London safe and save young lives.

If you don’t want to speak to the police, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. London Ambulance Service (LAS) treated two people at the scene for minor injuries

Services are suspended from Edmonton Green to Enfield Town: Transport for London said the train was travelling at “low speed” when it crashed:

British Transport Police (BTP) said: “As is routine, the driver has been breathalysed and blew negative.”……….The driver was treated for shock, Network Rail said.

Images posted on social media showed the train remained upright but came off the tracks and stopped just short of hitting a station building.

London Fire BrigadeAn eye-witness said the “train would have damaged the building” had it not been for the protective barrier

Station commander Jim O’Neill, who was at the scene, said: “The train had hit the buffers at the station, which is at the end of the line, and gone up over the top of them.

“Firefighters carried out a systematic search of the train to ensure there were no further people on board.

“Crews assisted station staff to make the scene safe and a recovery operation will now be carried out.”

Gary Spencer, a worker at the nearby postal sorting office, said dozens of emergency services vehicles were outside the station.

He said: “I have never known a train to fail stopping at the end of the line.

“If the metal steel was not behind the buffer I’m confident the train would have damaged the building.”

LAS dispatched “one ambulance crew, an emergency planning officer, a clinical team manager, two incident response officers, medics in cars, and our hazardous area response team,” a spokeswoman said.

“Two people were assessed at the scene for minor injuries, but they were not taken to hospital.”

The rail regulator, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), has sent two safety inspectors to the scene to “help establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident”.
