(CAMBRIDGE, U.K.) Crown Court of Appeal Report: A child abuser has had his sentence increased after it was referred by the Solicitor General, Alex Chalk QC MP #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Jan.15: A Cambridgeshire child abuser has had his sentence increased after it was referred to the Court of Appeal by the Solicitor General, Alex Chalk QC MP.

#AceDailyNews Court Report: Sex abuser has sentence increased following ULS referral: The offender, who cannot be named for legal reasons, repeatedly abused a young child and attempted to cover up his actions in multiple ways, including forcing her to delete text messages he sent to her indicating intended sexual activity according to

On 21 October 2021, the offender was sentenced to 11 years and four months’ imprisonment, followed by 12 months on licence at Cambridge Crown Court.

Following the sentencing, the Solicitor General referred the offender’s sentence to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme.

On 14 January the Court of Appeal found his original sentence to be unduly lenient and increased it to 14 years’ imprisonment with a 12 month extended licence.

Speaking after the hearing, the Solicitor General, Alex Chalk QC MP said:

“This crime was sickening in every sense of the word. His actions have caused lasting severe psychological and physical harm to the victim. I hope the Court’s decision to increase his sentence can bring his victim some comfort.”

(BIRMINGHAM, U.K.) Crown Court Report: Three men have been convicted for importing illegal firearms and ammunition into the UK in the post, before trying to sell them to organised criminals #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.09: The National Crime Agency launched an investigation after two semi-automatic pistols and hollow-point bullets were intercepted at Coventry Airport on 24 January 2020. Border Force officers recovered the weapons, which had been concealed in an electronic safe in a package labelled as car parts, sent from Orlando, Florida.

#AceDailyNews Court Report: Midlands trio launched mail order gun service: The parcel was addressed to a ‘John Bob Walton’ in Cambridge. Five days later, a man claiming to be Walton called Parcelforce asking where it was. NCA investigators traced the number back to Dion Roberts, 33, from Coventry.

firearms and ammunition laid on a table

Roberts and a second man, Keston Joseph, 33, were stopped by NCA officers, supported by West Midlands Police, on 31 January 2020 while driving on King William Street in Coventry. Both were arrested.

Joseph was released under investigation but Roberts was remanded in custody and his phone seized. Analysis of his messages showed that he had arranged the importation with a contact known as ‘Shotta’ who was based in Florida.

The messages also showed that they had successfully imported another semi-automatic pistol two weeks prior to Roberts’ arrest, using the same method. In audio messages, Roberts instructed Shotta to send the weapon in a safe that was insulated with carbon paper and to “just show them as car parts innit”.

He also assured him, “We make a lot o’ money bro. we make a lot of paper, a lotta lotta o’ paper there to be made”.

When arranging the second importation, Roberts asked Shotta to include five rounds of ammunition with each gun. Shotta warned against this as he thought they would give off a ‘certain smell’, but Roberts told him this wouldn’t matter due to the insulation in the safe.

Roberts and Joseph collected the package containing the first weapon on 11 January 2020. Officers recovered a photo from Joseph’s phone of him holding the gun, which had been taken that morning.

Phone records showed that following this, Roberts and Joseph were actively searching for buyers whilst simultaneously organising the shipment of the second package.

Roberts made contact with the third man, Dashan Caines, 46, from Birmingham, to bring him in on the conspiracy. Communication between the three men was ongoing and the investigation revealed they had travelled together to hide the safe.

With Roberts in custody and evidence secured against his co-conspirators, NCA armed officers arrested Caines and Joseph on 5 March 2020.

The safe was recovered two months later hidden in a bush near Roberts’ home with the firearm still inside. When NCA forensic scientists analysed the weapon, they discovered Caines’ DNA on it.

Today at Birmingham Crown Court, Caines and Joseph were found guilty of conspiring to acquire and sell prohibited weapons and ammunition following a five week trial.

Roberts pleaded guilty to the offences at an earlier hearing.

All three men will be sentenced at the same court on a date to be confirmed.

NCA Branch Commander Mick Pope, said:

“These men planned to build a business on selling illegal weapons to other criminals. They saw this only as a money-making scheme, paying no consideration to the danger firearms pose to the public.

“Criminals who own firearms – often those linked to the supply of illegal drugs – use them to instil fear, inflict violence and in some cases, to kill.

“The success of this investigation reinforces our commitment to protect the public and tackle this threat.

“We will continue to work with key partners, such as Border Force, to prevent illegal firearms from entering the UK.”

(LONDON) NCA Investigation Report: A Cambridge academic who fraudulently claimed almost £2.8 million in government grants has been ordered to pay £1.3 million back from his crimes or face another eight-and-a-half years in prison #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.23: The National Crime Agency started an investigation into Abdi-Jalebi after he was stopped three times attempting to leave the country carrying a large amount of cash. In one case he tried to conceal the cash in a chocolate box to avoid detection….

#AceDailyNews reports that a Cambridge academic ordered to pay £1.3 million or face another 8.5 years in prison: Dr Ehsan Abdi-Jalebi (40) claimed government funds allocated to develop renewable energy projects and siphoned the money into his own accounts using fake documents.

Abdi Jalebi Ehsan custody image

NCA officers discovered Abdi-Jalebi’s companies had made a series of grant applications to fund research, but on a number of occasions Abdi-Jalebi had falsified documents, including invoices, accounts and bank statements, to show what was happening to the money.

He sent his accountants forged invoices to show payments which were actually non-existent or where the amount had been altered.

Abdi-Jalebi had fraudulently claimed £2.8m in grants and had withdrawn more than £820,000 in cash over a period of just under four years. He was jailed in December 2018 for four years after he admitted 13 counts of forgery.

NCA investigators then began an investigation into Abdi-Jalebi’s accounts and showed more than £1.5m of the funds had been transferred to Dubai for his personal use or removed to Iran in cash.

Abdi-Jalebi appeared at a confiscation hearing on 19 August where it was determined the benefit from his crimes was £2.1 million.

He claimed the money had been used to conduct research and development work, but this was rejected by the judge, who agreed with NCA investigators much of the funds spent on Abdi-Jalebi’s lifestyle. This included payments towards the purchase of a property near Cambridge and the lease of a Maserati sports car.

Abdi-Jalebi was ordered to pay £1.3 million, the amount the judge found was still available from his crimes . He will face a further eight-and-a-half years in prison if the funds are not paid within three months, and will still owe the money.

NCA senior investigating officer Ian Truby said: Ehsan Abdi-Jalebi fraudulently claimed these grants and took millions from the taxpayer, immediately removing the money to Dubai and Iran and lived a lavish lifestyle: NCA investigators worked hard to establish where the money had been sent so that as much of these taxpayer funds could be recovered as possible: This result shows that a prison sentence is not the only consequence for fraud and the NCA will work to deny you from the proceeds of your crimes.”

(CAMBRIDGE, U.K.) Crown Court Report: A man has been found guilty of murdering his partner’s teenage daughter after she told her mother he had been sexually abusing her for seven years #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.29: This was the last time Bea was seen. Her body has never been found and it is thought likely Scott Walker disposed of Bea in the countryside near Peterborough….

#AceDailyNews reports that a teenager has been murdered to stop her speaking out about sexual abuse Scott Walker, 51, carried out the murder in a 90-minute period when he was meant to be driving 17-year-old Bernadette Walker, known as Bea, from his parents’ house to their family home on Saturday 18 July last year.

Bernadette 'Bea' Walker

Bernadette ‘Bea’ Walker

On 17 July Bea had stayed overnight at the home of Scott Walker’s parents after a family row about the allegations. Her mother, Sarah Walker, 38, had not believed Bea when she told her the day before about the sexual abuse.

The prosecution said that shortly after killing her Walker called Sarah, to tell her what he had done and asked her to help him cover up Bea’s death and buy them both time to work out what should happen next. They then concocted a story which was intended to mislead and pervert the investigation into the disappearance and death of Bea.

Later that night they drove to a lock-up garage where the prosecution believe Bea’s possessions and mobile telephone may have been stored. Scott Walker went back and forth from the garage that night and over the next two days. Sarah went with him on some of those trips, including to outlying areas of Peterborough and to the area of Cowbit in Spalding and to the East of Gunthorpe. The prosecution team pieced together their movements through GPS and cell site data on their mobile phones, the movement of the car from CCTV and police automated number plate recognition (ANPR) data..

CCTV of the Walkers' car
CCTV of the Walkers’ car

The story the pair invented and which they stuck to throughout their trial at Cambridge Crown Court was that Scott Walker stopped the car to confront Bea about her allegations of sexual abuse against him. She then jumped out and walked off leaving her backpack with her few belongings in the car. He told police that he went after her, but she disappeared down an alleyway and he went home without Bea.

Meanwhile, Sarah Walker used Bea’s mobile phone to send fake text messages to her friends, Bea’s friends, and to family members supposedly from Bea confessing she had run off because she lied about the abuse and did not want to get into trouble. They did not report her missing to the police until 21 July and by then they had laid the false trail and had disposed of Bea’s body.

Scott Walker and Sarah Walker

Scott Walker and Sarah Walker custody photos

Nicola Rice, senior prosecutor from CPS East of England said: “On the morning of the 18 July, Scott Walker went to collect Bea from his parent’s home. Prior to doing this he went to his lock-up garage. When he arrived, he was told that Bea was still maintaining that he had sexually abused her. He drove off from his parents with Bea. This was the last time that anyone saw Bea. Shortly after his mobile phone was sited in the countryside outside of Peterborough and then switched off for 90 minutes. This is where and when the prosecution say that Bea was killed: He then telephoned Sarah Walker and they talked for nine minutes. The Crown’s case was that it was in this time that, knowing Bea was dead, that they concocted a plan and began to lay a false trail that she was missing. They went to extraordinary levels of deceit to cover-up what happened, telling a web of lies to family members, friends and ultimately to the police.

“Despite a police investigation and search, Bea’s body has never been recovered. We all hope that one day Scott and Sarah Walker will do the right thing and say where she is in the hope that dignity can be returned to her”

Sarah Walker, along with Scott Walker, was convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice: These related to knowing she was dead but sending messages from her phone and providing false information to the police all to impede their investigation:

The prosecution team led by CPS East of England presented a timeline of messages that showed that Sarah Walker hacked into Bea’s social media accounts soon after her murder, including changing her passwords: Immediately after receiving the phone call from Scott Walker, Sarah found Bea’s mobile which she had left at home and hacked into her email and attempted to access her college and Instagram accounts. She claimed she did this to prevent the sexual abuse allegations becoming known. The prosecution argued that knowing her daughter was dead, she wanted to use the phone to create the false impression that Bea was alive but had run away.

They used the fake messages to explain they thought she was ok and felt no need to inform the police that Bea had disappeared: Using Bea’s phone Sarah Walker sent a message to her own phone supposedly from Bea apologising for making up the abuse allegations. She also sent a message to one of Bea’s friends saying she had runaway because she had lied. Sarah would later tell police that Scott Walker told her to send these false messages.

They were arrested six weeks later.

Suspicious behaviour

Bea was a regular user of a number of social media platforms and posted every day on Instagram. Her friends said it was really unusual for her not to post anything on social media and they had not heard from her after 17 July – the day before her murder. Some of her friends gave evidence confirming this was the last day they had contact with Bea.

Nicola Rice added: “Bea was not reported missing until three days after Scott Walker collected her; enough time for he and Sarah Walker to get their story together and to do what they needed to ensure that there was no link back to them.

“When she was reported missing Sarah Walker, in the presence of Scott Walker, continued to tell lies, hampering the police investigation. She pretended Bea chose not to return and lying that she had been in contact with her. The truth was that Bea did not have her mobile phone. Scott and Sarah Walker always had it and purported to be Bea until they disposed of it.

“The delay in reporting Bea missing and the lies they told everyone were nothing short of wicked and designed only to protect themselves without any thought, care or love for Bea or their wider family.”

They will both be sentenced on 10 September.

Timeline

16 July 2020 – Bea tells her mother that Scott Walker has been sexually abusing her for years. Sarah Walker does not believe her.

17 July – The Walkers’ and Bea argue about the allegations. Bea agrees to spend the night with Scott Walker’s parents. Scott Walker drops her off around 10.30pm.

18 July – Scott Walker goes back to his parents in the morning to collect Bea. They leave at 11.06am. This is the last time anyone other than Scott Walker sees Bea alive. She is thought to have been murdered in the next 90 minutes.

18-20 July – Scott and Sarah Walker start to lay a trial of false messages supposedly from Bea saying she has run away. They also travel to a lock up garage and fenland areas of Peterborough during this period.

21 July – Sarah first reports her daughter missing to the police who being to investigate.

10 September – Both are arrested. Scott Walker is later charged with Bea’s murder.

14 June 2021 – Eleven months after Bea’s murder the trial of Scott and Sarah Walker starts at Cambridge Crown Court.

26 July – Scott Walker is convicted of her murder and both he and Sarah Walker are found guilty of two counts of perverting the course of justice.

Ådditional Notes:

  • The trial started on 14 June 2021 at Cambridge Crown Court

  • Scott Walker (D.O.B. 05/02/1970) was charged with one count of murder
  • Both he and Sarah Walker (DOB 19/10/1982) were jointly charged with four counts of perverting the course of justice: Two counts related to knowing that Bea was dead and trying to impede the police investigation into that and two others related to not knowing Bea was dead but impeding the police investigation
  • Before the trial Sarah Walker pleaded guilty to two of the perverting the course of justice counts related to not knowing Bea was dead. Scott Walker pleaded not guilty to all four.

(CAMBRIDGE,U.K) JUST IN: Historian Mary Beard is to fund scholarships for two disadvantaged students to study classics at Cambridge University, as a “retirement present” #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Mar.15: The Cambridge professor is stepping down next year after almost 40 years of teaching and research:

CAMBRIDGE: Mary Beard’s retirement present to fund students: ‘She described the £80,000 donation as her “payback time”

By Sean Coughlan
BBC News family and education correspondent

Mary Beard
Mary Beard wants classics to be not just for “posh people”

“I am very conscious of what I’ve gained from classics, no-one from my family had a university degree,” said Dame Mary.

The historian and television presenter wants to help widen the reach of classics as a subject, so it’s not “just for posh people who’ve done Latin for ages”.

Most people approaching retirement might expect the present to be heading in their direction, but Dame Mary – no stranger to doing things her own way – wants to mark her departure with her own donation.

Widening access

“It’s a pledge, that we really do want people from more diverse backgrounds to study classics. Classics is a subject that has changed, is changing, but needs to change more.

“But you still walk around the faculty and it looks, although not entirely, very white,” said Dame Mary. The television historian brought the classics to a mainstream audience

The funding, £40,000 for each of two students, will help with living costs through their degree course, and will be available to students from low-income families or under-represented groups.

Dame Mary has not named the awards after herself, but after one of her classics tutors, Joyce Reynolds.

She said her former tutor at Cambridge, now aged 102, had been a “fantastic fighter for the rights of women in what was then a very male subject”.

“I have no illusion that giving a couple of scholarships is the solution, but it’s a way of showing we’re serious about equality of opportunity,” said Dame Mary.

She said classics students are “trained to think hard, to express themselves, to write well – qualities that a hell of a lot of employers are looking for”.

The subject also offered a way of “thinking about the world differently”, with different perspectives on philosophy, culture, gender and race.

Earliest memory

Her BBC television series, such as Julius Caesar Revealed and Mary Beard’s Ultimate Rome: Empire Without Limit, have brought ancient history to a wider, modern audience.

She has also faced threats and abuse on social media, and what she’s called “sexist rants” online.

Dame Mary said her own interest in classics was through an early enthusiasm for archaeology, and she remembers the excitement of finding a Roman coin and “holding the past”.

One of her earliest memories, she said, was being taken by her mother to the British Museum as a small child, and an attendant being kind enough to open a display case to let her hold a piece of ancient Egyptian carbonised cake.

She now wants to help open up classics for another generation of young people.

Zaynab Ahmed, a current third-year classics student at Newnham College, Cambridge, said a barrier was the lack of state schools teaching the subject.

She said that was why the Cambridge four-year course was more accessible, with a foundation year to support students who might not have studied Latin at school.

“Classics is a subject I’ve fallen in love with. It’s about the past, but it’s also about how we understand ourselves now,” she said.

UNITED STATES: ‘ Harvard Students Believe America Bigger Threat to World Peace than ISIS ‘

#AceNewsServices – UNITED STATES (Cambridge) – October 11 – Harvard students believe that American is a bigger threat to world peace than ISIS, according to a recent survey of attendees at the prestigious Cambridge university.

Campus Reform, a self-styled ‘campus watchdog’ for conservative students, carried out the interviews in the quad at the Ivy League school on Saturday and asked: ‘Who is the bigger threat to world peace, ISIS or the U.S.?’

The students featured in the video were overwhelming in their belief that America and its interventionist foreign policy is a greater threat than the group of Muslim fanatics that have gained global notoriety in recent months through a series of video of Western hostages being beheaded.

‘American imperialism and our protection of oil interests in the Middle East are destabilizing the region and allowing groups like ISIS to gain power,’ said one student.

‘We are, at some level, the cause of it,’ she adds.

‘As a western civilization we’re to blame for a lot of the problems that we’re facing now,’ said another student. ‘I don’t think anyone would argue that we didn’t create the problem of ISIS, ourselves.’

The interviews were carried out by Caleb Bonham, editor of Campus Reform and a frequent guest on the Fox News Channel.

‘In many ways I have to think it’s America because America is making decisions that are much more likely to affect the world,’ one student responds to Bonham’s question.

‘The amount of spending that America has on causes of potential destruction in the world is really outlandish,’ she continues.

‘We’ve been learning about this recently how much america spends on defence mechanisms alone and it’s really quite astounding compared to any other country in the world really.’

Another student tells Bonham: ‘I just an interesting conversation last night with a couple of my neighbours and they can see how the ideology of ISIS might appeal to people in the Middle East who are not familiar with how we think as Americans.’

‘They have a skewed view of us just as a lot of Americans have a skewed view of them, he adds.

Bonham was highly critical of the student’s responses.

‘This video demonstrates the absurdity behind the bash America fad,’ he told FoxNews.com

‘Unfortunately, too many students think it is intellectual to try and piece together a reason why America is a greater threat than this terrorist organization trying to establish a caliphate through public executions, bombings and be-headings.’

As one of the world’s most prestigious universities, Harvard enjoys an almost unparalleled reputation in America.

It is the oldest academic institute in the United States, dating from 1636, and boats an impressive 210-acre main campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
