' Artillery Shell Fired From Ukraine Hits Private House in Rostov Region of Russia Killing One Citizen '

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE (Donetsk) – July 13 – An artillery shell from Ukraine has hit a private house in the Rostov region of Russia, killing a citizen and leaving two more injured. The Russian Foreign Ministry promises heavy consequences.

Reportedly up to six mortar shells exploded on Sunday in the small Russian town of Donetsk, which has the same name as the Ukrainian city and is situated right on the Ukrainian border.

Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Russia has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry where he was handed a note of protest in the strongest terms.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called the shelling “an obviously aggressive act” on Ukraine’s part and warned it could have “irreversible consequences”with Kiev holding full responsibility for the provocation.

Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin promised a “rigorous and concrete answer” to the shelling of Russian territory that resulted in the senseless loss of life.

“We’re currently evaluating the situation, and the facts we’ve learnt risk a dangerous escalation of the tensions on the [Russian-Ukrainian] border, which puts our citizens in high danger,” Karasin told RIA news agency, stressing that harsh reaction would follow only after detailed analysis of the situation.

— RT (@RT_com) July 13, 2014

The National Security Council of Ukraine has already declared that Kiev’s troops involved in the operation in the east of the country have nothing to do with the shelling incident.

“Ukrainian troops are definitely not shelling the territory of the Russian Federation. We did not shoot,” said Andrey Lysenko, official representative of the information center of the NSCU.

The leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) denied allegations of staging a provocation against Russian citizens.

“We’re accustomed to being blamed for all Ukrainian shellings,” DPR’s vice-PM Andrey Purgin told Russian ‘Moscow speaks’ radio station.

Authorities in the Rostov region have confirmed the death of a 46-year-old man and injuries to four civilians, including two elderly women.

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE – June 24 – Nine people are feared dead after self-defense forces in the Donetsk region shot down a Ukrainian army helicopter, which was used for transporting military cargo, a Kiev spokesman said.

The Mi-8 helicopter was downed “at about 5 pm local time at Karachun Mountain near Slavyansk by a rocket fired from a portable air defense system,”eastern Ukraine military operation spokesman, Vladislav Seleznyov, wrote on his Facebook page.

“There were nine people aboard the helicopter. According to preliminary information, all those aboard died in the crash,” he said, adding that the helicopter was returning to a Ukrainian checkpoint after a cargo delivery mission.

The self-defense troops, who fired the missile, escaped to the nearby village of Bylbasovka, Seleznyov wrote.

` Pro-Russian Rebels Launch Serious Attack on Lugansk Airport ‘

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE (Lugansk) – Pro-Russian rebels fighting Ukraine’s Western-backed government have launched their most serious attacks yet on Lugansk International Airport in the east of the country, a military source said Sunday.

The assaults, which took place Saturday evening and Sunday morning in the immediate wake of the inauguration of Ukraine’s new President Petro Poroshenko, did not result in any injuries among the defenders, he said.

“It was clear the rebels were trying to destroy the building which controls the power supply to the airport,” said the source, one of the Ukrainian paratroopers guarding the airport, talking to AFP by telephone.

“It’s the first time we have had an attack of this kind. Up till now, we’ve only had a few skirmishes,” said the soldier, who identified himself only as Sergiy.

Pro-Russian separatist proclaimed the independence of the “Lugansk People’s Republic” in May, at about the same time as the neighbouring “Donetsk People’s Republic”.

The two districts have been the scene of ceaseless fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian insurgents that have killed more than 200 people since mid-April.

When approached by AFP, a spokesman for the “Lugansk People’s Republic” could not confirm the assaults on the airport, which has been closed for the past month because of the instability in the region.

The airport is one among very few areas in the Lugansk not controlled by the separatists, who have taken over most of the cities, set up numerous roadblocks and recently seized several checkpoints on the border with Russia.

` Ammunition Was Seen Still Lying on the Ground After Fighting in Aleksandrovka, Lugansk Region ‘

#AceNewsServices – UKRAINE – FRIDAY – May 30 – SNAPSHOT NEWS – Kiev‘s Bloody Campaign Continues.

18:17 GMT:
Ammunition was seen still lying on the ground after fighting in Aleksandrovka, Lugansk region, on Thursday.

18:09 GMT:
The UN will publish its next human rights report on June 17. The paper will highlight the Odessa Trade Unions House fire, in which 48 anti-Kiev protestors died on May 2, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said during a briefing. The deadly fire in Odessa will also be the subject of another report that will be presented by Ivan Shimonovich, assistant to the UN’s secretary-general, at the end of June. Dujarric stressed that the UN is staying in contact with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) because “if a chemical weapon was used, this is the main business for OPCW.”

15:10 GMT:
A criminal case, on the use of prohibited means and methods of warfare in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions by the Ukrainian military, has been opened by Russia’s Investigative Committee.

The proceedings have been launched against as “yet unidentified servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as well as members of the National Guard and Right Sector movement with regard to the shelling of Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Donetsk, Mariupol and other settlements in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics,” Vladimir Markin, spokesman for the Committee, told ITAR-TASS news agency.

Markin says the investigation believes Kiev violated the convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, signed in Geneva in 1949, by intentionally using weapons, artillery and aviation to kill civilians.

13:49 GMT:
Russia has withdrawn the bulk of its troops from the Ukrainian border, though seven battalions, numbering in the thousands, remain in position, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Friday.

“The majority have gone,” Reuters cites him as telling reporters on the eve of a security conference in Singapore. “But seven battalions remain.” The official said he had no figure for the number of troops that had withdrawn. “But … thousands still remain,” he said.

Hagel called the withdrawal a promising sign, but said all troops positioned near the Ukrainian border earlier this year need to be pulled back.

13:48 GMT:
The Interior Ministry of Ukraine has asked the self-declared People’s Republic of Lugansk to enter into negotiations, “the people’s governor” Valery Bolotov said on Friday, Ria Novosti reports. Bolotov replied he was only prepared to enter talks on condition that all Ukrainian military forces leave the Luhansk region. He added that in the event of talks, a third party should be invited to the negotiating table.

“Most likely, it will be Russia,” he said.

Seven children were hurt as the Ukrainian military shelled the city of Slavyansk, a stronghold of the protesters, in the country’s South East on Friday night, Pavel Astakhov, Russia’s ombudsman for children’s rights, said.

A local children’s hospital came under fire as Kiev’s troops renewed the shelling of Slavyansk on Friday morning

Ukraine claimed it had regained control of swathes of the separatist east on Friday even as Washington expressed concern over the appearance of fighters from Russia’s war-ravaged region of Chechnya among the insurgents.

The rebels for their part dismissed speculation of a rift in their ranks after a dozen local militants were evicted from their seat of power in Donetsk by a military brigade comprised largely of Chechens and other Russians from the volatile North Caucasus.

Both Kiev and its Western allies have long accused the Kremlin of choreographing a seven-week insurgency that has shaken Ukraine’s foundations — a charge that Russian President Vladimir Putin denies.

But the recent appearance among the separatists of trained gunmen from Chechnya — a mostly Muslim region that fell under Kremlin control following two post-Soviet wars for independence — has fuelled fears of the conflict being transformed into a proxy war involving elements from other unstable regions of the former Soviet Union.

Ukraine’s acting defence minister said his forces were in high spirits despite the downing of a military helicopter on Thursday by the rebels that killed 11 soldiers and a general.

Ukraine’s acting defence minister said his forces were in high spirits despite the downing of a military helicopter on Thursday by the rebels that killed 11 soldiers and a general.

Ukraine’s President-elect Petro Poroshenko has vowed to punish the “bandits” who shot down a military helicopter as the government’s efforts to rein in pro-Russia separatists continue.
“The deaths of the military troops in Slovyansk are pain our whole nation is feeling,” Poroshenko posted on his Facebook page late Thursday. While mourning with rest of the Ukraine, I give my condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen heroes. Crimes of the bandits will not be left unpunished.”
Militants in the rebel stronghold of Slovyansk, in the Donetsk region, claimed responsibility for downing the helicopter, a spokesman for the separatists said. A dozen servicemen died, authorities said, including a general.

10:42 GMT:
One more group of members of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) has been detained in the city of Severodonetsk, 100km from Lugansk in eastern Ukraine, the OSCE mission reports on its Facebook page. The group, which included 4 international members plus an interpreter, was stopped by armed personnel, says OSCE. Contact was lost with the group on Thursday.

The OSCE said that it still has no contact with the previous team in Donetsk, another eastern city in the Donetsk region. The last news from the group, which also included four international observers, was on Monday.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Donetsk’s self-appointed mayor, Vyacheslav Ponomarev, said that anti-government militias in Slavyansk are holding the four observers in Donetsk.

He added that the observers are fine and will be released soon after the protesters sort out who they are and why they arrived in Donetsk. He implied that the OSCE people could have been gathering intelligence on the militia.

07:58 GMT:
The military operation in eastern Ukraine will continue until the region “can live and function normally and the people are calm,” acting Defence Minister Mikhail Koval stated on Friday.

06:40 GMT:
The Federal Security Service (FSB) has arrested a four-member cell of the Right Sector nationalist movement, which was preparing terrorist acts in Crimea, the FSB said in a statement.

The members of the cell planned to set fire to offices of local pro-Russian organizations in Crimea’s capital, Simferopol, in mid-April and then to use IEDs to damage a World War II memorial and a Vladimir Lenin monument on the eve of Victory Day on May 9, the FSB stated.

The four activists will be charged with terrorism and illegal possession of firearms and explosives, the statement said.

03:36 GMT:
The Ukrainian military is taking over train stations around Dnepropetrovsk region, Segodnya.ua quoted officials as saying. The decision was made in light of self-defence forces taking over the rail-roads. The military will have the authority to stop and search passenger trains.

Thursday May 29:
Russia on Thursday called on the West to prevent ‘a national disaster’ in Ukraine and urged Kiev to order a ceasefire as further deadly violence erupted in the country’s east, killing 12 soldiers.

“We once again call on our Western partners to use all their influence on Kiev to stop Ukraine from descending into a national disaster,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The international community awaits from Kiev an immediate ceasing of military activities in the east of the country and the withdrawal of troops. Without that, achieving peace in Ukraine is impossible.”

Russia expressed its “deep concern over the further escalation of the situation in eastern Ukraine”.

It accused the Kiev authorities of bombarding cities and civilian targets using aircraft and artillery in a military operation that “brings pain and suffering to peaceful citizens”.

“Among those injured are elderly people and young children,” it said.

` School and Kindergarten Shelled in Slavyansk ‘

#AceNewsServices – SLAVYANSK – May 28 – A school and a kindergarten have been shelled in Slavyansk as the city becomes increasingly unsafe in the intensified Kiev military campaign. At least 9 civilians were injured in Wednesday’s shelling incidents, including a child.

Slaviansk update

Ukrainian mortar shells have for weeks been raining down on the checkpoints and positions of the Slavyansk self-defense, but much of the shelling occurred outside the city. Italian journalist Andrea Rocchelli and his Russian interpreter, veteran human rights activist Andrey Mironov, were almost torn to pieces in one such shelling.

However, this week the battleground apparently moved right into civilian quarters of Slavyansk, as shells started hitting residential blocks and nearby buildings, killing three people on Monday.

On Wednesday, there was a shocking reminder of how the situation might unfold if the likely president-elect Petro Poroshenko pushes on with the military operation in the region, as shells struck the city’s streets, yards, a school and a kindergarten.

RT talked to a male schoolteacher from Slavyansk school number 13, who asked not to be named.

“Around midday there was a loud explosion in the school, and I fell to the floor, taking cover,” the teacher told RT over the phone.

The man said that he rushed to the corridor to assemble all the teachers and children in the school and take them to a safe place. Clouds of dust were billowing on one side of the building.

According to the teacher, it turned out that the shell exploded right above the school hall, where children are usually gathered for festive events, and part of the roof “was simply blown away.”

Luckily, no children were in the hall at the time.

All the pupils and teachers were quickly evacuated to the basement.

#AceWorldNews – DONETSK – May 28 – Coalminers from the Donbass coalfields rallied in Donetsk on Wednesday to protest against Kiev’s punitive combat operation in the east of the country.

The rally gathered from 1,000 to 3,000 coalminers, according to various estimates.

The action started with a symbolic rally at the eternal flame, after which the demonstrators moved to the building of the Donetsk regional administration, self-defence forces told ITAR-TASS.

Konstantin Kuzmin, First Deputy Coal Minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, said on Tuesday Donbass coalminers declared an indefinite strike and demanded the withdrawal of the Ukrainian military from the Donetsk Region.

“Donbass coalminers are starting an open-ended strike to demand an end to the military crackdown and the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the region,” he said.

Coalminers from the Skochinsky, Abakumov, Chelyuskintsev and Trudovskaya coalmines, as well as from two coalmines near the town of Makeyevka, joined the action, he said.

“We expect other coalmines to join our action soon,” Kuzmin said.

` Cameraman from Spanish Language Editorial Office of Russian Television Barred from Entering Ukraine ‘

#AceWorldNews – MOSCOW – May 23- Cameramen from the Spanish language editorial office of the RT television news channel was barred from entering Ukraine without explanation, the television company said on Friday.

RT is a global news television channel broadcasting from Russia for all over the world in English, Spanish and Arabic.

The reporters had accreditation of the Ukrainian Central Election Commission for coverage of the presidential elections.

Cameraman Alexander Serichenko and his assistant Andrei Peleshok were denied entry when they arrived at the airport of Odessa.

Without explanations, border guards forced the reporters to buy tickets back to Moscow at their own expense.

On May 20, reporters of the Arab language editorial staff who arrived in Kiev to cover the presidential elections were also denied entry to Ukraine. After thorough examination of their luggage and questioning at Kiev’s airport, the reporters were told that they “failed to explain the aim of their visit”, though they were accredited for the elections. Border guards put marks “denied entry to Ukraine” in the journalists’ passports.

On April 7, a cameraman from RUPTLY video agency, belonging to RT, was denied entry to Ukraine at Donetsk airport.

The official explanation was that the cameraman did not have enough money to stay in the country.

` Moscow Raises Issue of Release of Russian Journalists and Violation of Journalistic Rights in Ukraine ‘

#AceNewsServices – UKRAINE – May 22 – Moscow raised on Thursday the issue of releasing Russian journalists Oleg Sidyakin and Marat Saichenko during a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Russian representative at the OSCE Andrey Kelin has said.

On May 18, the Ukrainian National Guard detained Marat Saichenko and Oleg Sidyakin, reporters with Life News, near Kramotorsk. A Life News public statement said that as the journalists were being detained, Sidyakin managed to send a text message that something had gone wrong and then left his cell phone open so Life News could hear him and Saichenko explain to their captors that they are journalists and are not involved in any fighting.

He asked the Ukrainian envoy why his country’s authorities banned members of the special OSCE observer mission in Ukraine from seeing the journalists. Sidyakin and Saichenko were detained May 18 by the Ukrainian National Guard near the city of Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region.

Also, the Russian side drew attention to Ukraine’s violation of its commitments in the area of mass media, RIA Novosti reported.

On May 20, 2014, Russia Today (RT), a Russian state television service, lost contact with their contract writer, Graham Phillips, a United Kingdom national, after he called to say he had been detained by the Ukrainian National Guard at a checkpoint in Mariupol, in south-eastern Ukraine. RT told Human Rights Watch that the next day the Interior Ministry told RT producers that Defence Ministry agents had detained Phillips.

A published RT statement said that during Phillips’ May 20 phone call with RT, he said he was “being treated OK…. They have done checks on my documentation, they found my reports and clips I have done and they’re now looking through them asking me my position on things, asking if I am a spy….” The statement also said the men who detained Phillips were not satisfied with the letter he presented from RT confirming that he works for the television service.

The British government should immediately call on Ukrainian authorities to free Phillips and meanwhile provide him access to the British consulate and a lawyer of his own choosing, Human Rights Watch said.

“RT’s reporting may not be well received by some in Kiev, but it is totally unacceptable and a blatant violation of freedom of expression to arrest journalists simply for the content or tone of their reporting,” Denber said. “Worse still is to turn an arbitrary detention into an enforced disappearance by concealing all information about where the journalist is and what’s happening to him.”

As this went to press, RT announced that Phillips would be handed over to the British consulate and that the Ukraine Security Service’s (SBU) proceedings against him were “over.”
