(ECUADOR) LATEST: At least 68 prisoners have been killed in new fighting at a prison where more than a hundred inmates died in clashes between rival gangs in September, officials say #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.15: The riot at the Litoral Penitentiary in the city of Guayaquil reportedly began on Friday evening: Police tactical units who have entered prison buildings have found guns, explosives and blades, reports say.

#AceDailyNews says according to a BBC World News Latin America Report: New fighting at Guayaquil jail kills at least 68-prisoners: Nearly 300 inmates have died so far this year in the country’s prisons and September’s gang-related violence was the worst in Ecuador’s history.

At the time, inmates from one wing of the prison crawled through a hole to gain access to a different wing, where they attacked rival gang members. Hundreds of officers and army soldiers were deployed to regain control of the complex.

The deadly fight, which saw some inmates decapitated, drew attention to the growing influence in Ecuador of transnational crime gangs such as the Mexico-based Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels: More than batons needed to control Ecuador’s jails’

The latest fighting at the prison in Guayaquil, Guayas province, has also left 25 people injured and follows a smaller armed clash earlier this month in which three inmates were shot dead.

There were reports of further violence at the prison later on Saturday and soldiers were deployed as reinforcements, securing the outside of the facility in armoured vehicles.

Family and friends of prisoners desperate for information gathered outside the building, where a list of victims’ names was taped to a post.

Authorities said the violence started as a territorial dispute between rival groups after a gang leader was released early.

“As this section of the prison was without a ringleader, other gangs tried to… enter to carry out a total massacre,” the governor of Guayas province, Pablo Arosemena, told reporters.

He said there were about 700 prisoners in the area of the facility where the deadly riot was taking place.

In a short statement posted to Twitter, President Guillermo Lasso offered his condolences “to the families who have lost loved ones” and said new measures were needed to “fight the mafias that profit from chaos”.

Earlier this month in a BBC interview, Mr Lasso insisted that his government was regaining control not only of the prisons but also of areas of Ecuador where drug traffickers had gained a foothold.

He accused previous governments of being “passive” about drug trafficking but warned that rising drug use in the country would take “more than a decade” to tackle.

And he said Ecuador would need international support from neighbouring Colombia, the US and the EU to strengthen its armed forces and police to combat the growing influence of crime gangs.

Ecuador’s prisons are currently accommodating about 9,000 more prisoners than they were designed to hold, officials say. The Litoral Penitentiary was designed for 5,300 inmates but currently holds 8,500.

‘ Swedish Court Upholds Arrest Warrant for WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange ‘

#AceWorldNews – ECUADOR – July 16 – A Swedish court has upheld an arrest warrant for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who found shelter in Ecuador’s embassy in London two years ago.

The Stockholm District Court moved to uphold the warrant on Wednesday following a legal challenge from Assange’s lawyers in June. The challenge was spurred by a change to Swedish criminal proceedings regarding the right to information in criminal procedures which brings the country in line with an EU directive.

Swedish Judge Lena Egelin was quick to dismiss the legal challenge to Assange’s arrest warrant, but noted that the decision could still be appealed.

Assange’s defence team had argued the European arrest warrant should be lifted on grounds that the prosecution had failed to act on time by not interviewing their client at the embassy.

They also said that detaining a suspect for the duration of the investigation was an excessive use force that was not in the public interest.

Saying the evidence provided by the plaintiffs was insufficient to back up the allegations, they further charged Assange was being threatened by the United States.

“Assange was granted political asylum by Ecuador on August 16, 2012. There has been a clear and present danger in the form of threats from the United States, ranging from extradition to plain assassination and execution,”Falkvinge.net cites the defence as saying during the proceedings.

` Illegal Gold Mining has Become the ` New Cocaine of Latin America ‘ as Andean Countries Generate High Profits’

#AceNewsServices – COLUMBIA – May 01 – At least three people were killed and 25 others are still trapped after an illegal gold mine collapsed in Santander de Quilichao, a city in the south-western Colombian province of Cauca, Agencia EFE cited emergency services officials as saying.

The collapse occurred in a rural district off San Antonio Road, fire chief Victor Claros told reporters, adding that victims’ bodies have been removed from the site.

The media has dubbed illegal gold mining as the “new cocaine” of Latin America, as the Andean countries – including Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and Brazil – are generating higher profits from it than from drug trafficking.

Illegal mining has become the “new cocaine” of Latin America in terms of illicit trading, as countries such as Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia, are said to be obtaining higher profits from the unlicensed activity than from drug trafficking. The ecological damage is even greater.

According to Chilean newspaper El Mercurio (in Spanish), the shady business in the Amazonian jungle of Peru is already generating 15% more profits than the country’s total estimated drug trafficking. The figure is shocking, as Peru is said to already be the world’s largest exporter of cocaine.

The latest study published by Peru’s government last month, revealed that illicit gold extraction has led to violence, pollution and the destruction of parts of the country’s precious rainforest— more than 50,000 hectares so far. The figure is significantly higher than the 18,000 ha authorities estimated last year.

What it’s worse, unlawful mining has spread to surrounding countries such as Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia, which is intensifying the damage on the Amazon, as well in water sources, reports El Mercurio.

Ecuador does not Recognise the ` Interim Government ‘ in the ` Ukraine ‘ as a Legitimate Entity ‘

#AceWorldNews – BOGOTA – March 30 Ecuador does not recognize the interim government in Ukraine as legitimate. That is why it abstained from voting on a draft resolution on the Crimean referendum at the United Nations General Assembly last Thursday, Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa said in a Saturday TV programme devoted to the president’s work.

“We are going to talk with a legitimate Ukrainian government and will only recognize a leadership, which is going to rise to power as a result of will expression by the Ukrainian people rather than a state coup, “President Correa said, adding that the interim authorities in Kiev had seized power as a result of a sophisticated and cunning plan and immediately enlisted the support of western powers with their typical double standards.

Last Thursday, Ecuador abstained from voting on a draft resolution on Ukraine’s territorial integrity which calls the March 16 referendum as invalid.

The resolution was adopted by 100 countries against 11 with 58 abstentions.
