(WORLDWIDE) LATEST: Internet Outrage Report: A major internet blackout that hit many high-profile websites on Tuesday has been blamed on a software bug #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.11: The outage has raised questions about relying on a handful of companies to run the vast infrastructure that underpins the internet:

INTERNET OUTRAGE: Fastly, the cloud-computing company responsible for the issues, said the bug had been triggered when one of its customers had changed their settings: The outage, which lasted about an hour, hit some popular websites such as Amazon, Reddit, the Guardian and the New York Times.

Fastly apologised and said the problem should have been anticipated.

Fastly senior engineering executive Nick Rockwell said: “This outage was broad and severe – and we’re truly sorry for the impact to our customers and everyone who relies on them.”

The company operates servers at strategic points around the world to help customers move and store content close to their end users.

But a customer quite legitimately changing their settings had exposed a bug in a software update issued to customers in mid-May, causing “85% of our network to return errors”, it said.

Engineers had worked out the cause of the problem about 40 minutes after websites had gone offline at about 11:00 BST, Fastly said.

“Within 49 minutes, 95% of our network was operating as normal,” it said.

The company has deployed a bug fix across its network and promised a “post mortem of the processes and practices we followed during this incident” and to “figure out why we didn’t detect the bug during our software quality assurance and testing processes”.

#AceNewsReport – June.10: Websites operated by news outlets including The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, Financial Times, the New York Times, Bloomberg News, CNN and Al Jazeera were sent offline across the globe on Tuesday evening, while The Guardian said on Twitter that its website and app had been affected by a wider internet outage.

Error 503: What triggered the global website outage?

Shortly after the outage, the United Kingdom’s attorney-general tweeted that the country’s main gov.uk website was down, providing an email for queries.

Other high-traffic websites including Reddit, Amazon, Paypal, Twitch and Spotify were listed as having experienced problems by outage tracking website Downdetector.com.

Fastly, one of the world’s most widely-used cloud based content delivery network providers, said the issue had been identified and “a fix was applied” shortly after 8:30pm AEST.

“Customers may continue to experience decreased cache hit ratio and increased origin load as global services return,” it said in a statement.

‘Error 503’

Earlier on Tuesday night, Fastly said it was investigating “the potential impact to performance with our CDN services”.

Content delivery networks (CDN) refer to a geographically distributed network of servers and their data centres that help in content distribution by storing, or “caching”, data closer to users.

The servers are located in data centres at various locations globally, connected via undersea cables. 

Fastly is one of the four major hosting service providers providing CDNs along with Akamai, Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services.

Fastly’s website said most of its coverage areas had faced “degraded performance”. Affected websites displayed the message: “Error 503 Service Unavailable”.

However, news publishers came up with inventive workarounds to report about the widespread outage while their websites failed to load up.

Popular tech website the Verge took to Google Docs to report news, while UK Technology Editor at the Guardian started a Twitter thread to report on the problems.

Nearly 21,000 Reddit users reported issues with the social media platform, while more than 2,000 users reported problems with Amazon, according to Downdetector.com.
