#AceWorldNews – RIO DE JANEIRO – May 22 – Bus drivers and consular staff in Brazil have gone on strike less than a month ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in the South American country.
Bus drivers, demanding higher salaries, began a 48-hour strike in Brazil’s second-largest city, Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday. The industrial action has reportedly left tens of thousands of passengers stranded.
The unions representing the Brazilian bus drivers say they want a 40-percent pay raise and better working conditions. Last week, they had staged a 24-hour strike and warned that they would walk off their jobs again if authorities did not give a satisfactory response to their demands.
Meanwhile, employees at Brazil’s diplomatic missions in North America and Europe started a two-day strike on Tuesday, demanding an increase in their pay.
#AceWorldNews says that FIFA, football’s world governing body, authorized Saturday the wearing of head covers for religious purposes during matches after a two-year testing period proved they do not pose a significant risk of injury.
The decision by FIFA will allow female players to wear the veil during games and will be extended to male players after a request from the Sikh community of Canada.
Although what men will be allowed to wear will not be the same as what they wear off the pitch.
“It was decided that female players can cover their heads to play,” said Jerome Valcke, FIFA secretary general at a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), in Zurich, Switzerland.
“It was decided that male players can play with a head cover too.
It will be a basic head cover and the colour should be the same as the team jersey,” he added.
“It’s a worldwide authorization:
- It was a plus for them to have authorization from IFAB for women to be able to play (wearing head covers).
- It was a request from these (Muslim) countries that said it would help support women’s football there,” Valcke said.
#AceWorldNews says an independent inspector will look into possible structural damage caused by an October fire at a World Cup stadium in western Brazil.
An earlier Reuters report showed that the blaze was far worse than government officials have previously said.
The inspector will visit the stadium in the city of Cuiaba on Monday to report the findings back to world soccer body FIFA and Brazilian officials, according to FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer.
The October 25 fire at the unfinished Arena Pantanal caused structural damage that could “compromise the overall stability of the construction,” according to prosecutors in Mato Grosso state.
