BRUSSELS: ' EU Leaders Agree Appointment of PM Donald Tusk as Next EU Council President and Frederick Mogheni as New Foreign Affairs Chief '

#AceWorldNews – BRUSSELS – August 31 – EU leaders on Saturday (30 August) agreed to appoint Polish PM Donald Tusk as the next EU Council president and Italian minister Federica Mogherini as the bloc’s new foreign affairs chief EUobserver reported.

Outgoing council head Herman Van Rompuy praised Tusk’s pro-European credentials and for the way he steered Poland through the economic crisis, noting that it was the only EU economy which kept growing while most suffered recession.

Tusk said his appointment comes at a time when "eastern European expertise will be badly needed in Europe" and that he will seek an EU consensus on how to handle the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

As he will also chair summits of eurozone leaders only, Tusk added that Europe should not be divided into “separate clubs” and that he would not have taken the post if there was to be a separate, eurozone-only chairman.

Amid criticism from some EU states on his weak English, he threw in an English pun: “Nothing is good enough for Europe, including my English, and I will polish my English … So don’t worry”.

German chancellor Angela Merkel also voiced approval.

“It is good that Europe will have such a highly qualified and motivated European, 25 years after the collapse of the Berlin wall, 25 years after the end of the Cold War”, she said in a brief statement.

` Russia will not cling to ` G8 Format ' if West does not Want it Either '

#AceWorldNews – HAGUE – March 24 – Russia is not clinging to the G8 format, as all major world problems can be discussed at other international venues such as Group of Twenty (G20), Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

“The G8 is an informal club, no one gives out membership cards and no one can expel members,” Lavrov told a media conference at the Hague. “If our Western partners believe that this format has exhausted itself, let it be. We are not clinging to it.”

He went on to say that many believe that the G8 has already fulfilled its mission as many issues are now discussed at the G20 forum.

“Generally speaking, there are also other formats for considering many questions, including the UN Security Council, the Middle East Quartet and the P5+1 on the Iranian nuclear problem,” Lavrov told journalists.

Also Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini has emphasized the importance of preserving the current G8 format. She was speaking earlier on Monday while accompanying Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS).
