GERMANY: ‘ Police Start Investigation into Six Private Security Guards Accused of Assaulting, Humiliating and Abusing Asylum Seekers ‘

#AceNewsServices – GERMANY (Berlin) October 04 – German police Monday started an investigation into six private security guards at a refugee centre accused of assaulting and humiliating asylum seekers in ways that drew comparisons to abuse against Guantanamo Bay prisoners, with some nicknamed the SS The Local reported.

Police also questioned hundreds of refugees after disturbing photo and video footage emerged at the weekend, including an image showing a security guard pinning a handcuffed Algerian man to the floor with his boot on the man’s neck.

Police said they launched their investigation after a journalist passed on to them cellphone video footage that showed security guards forcing an elderly man to lie on a mattress covered in vomit while threatening to beat him.

North Rhine-Westphalia state Interior Minister Ralf Jaeger pledged to pursue “with utmost determination” the case in the refugee centre in Burbach, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) south-east of Cologne, vowing to ensure “that this never happens again”.

“These are images of the kind we’ve seen from Guantanamo Bay,” said Frank Richter, police chief of the nearby city of Hagen, referring to the controversial US military detention facility in Cuba.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said that if investigations confirm that “refugees were abused and humiliated, then these would be repulsive acts”.

“We are a humane country. In Germany, the dignity of man is respected… and that must be true in asylum centres and refugee camps,” said Steffen Seibert.

BRITAIN: ‘ London’s Criminal Court Release’s Moazzam Begg Former Guantanamo Bay Detainee’

#AceWorldNews – BRITAIN (London) – October 01 – British prosecutors have dropped seven terrorism charges against Moazzam Begg, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee and outspoken advocate for the rights of terror suspects.

London’s Central Criminal Court acquitted Begg of all charges on Wednesday after prosecutors said new evidence showed “there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction in this case.”

Begg, 45, will be released immediately from Belmarsh high security prison, having spent seven months in custody following his arrest and questioning over a trip he made to Syria.

He faced seven charges, including possession of a document related to terrorism funding and training, and attending a terrorism training camp.

He was alleged to have attended the training camp in Syria between October 2012 and April 2013. Begg had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Begg was held in the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for nearly three years.

He was detained in Pakistan in January 2002 as an ‘enemy combatant’, and was transferred to the notorious US prison camp after a year at an internment center in Afghanistan.

He was released in 2005 from US custody without charges.

‘ Pentagon Stalls Closure of GITMO ‘

#AceWorldNews – WASHINGTON – September 30 – The transfer of prisoners out of Guantanamo Bay has ground to a halt amid a slow Pentagon approval process.

This has caused deep frustration within the administration and raising doubts that President Barack Obama will be able to fulfil his campaign promise to close the offshore prison for terrorism suspects AP reported today.

A detainee sent back to his native Algeria in March is the only prisoner to have moved out this year, beyond the controversial exchange of five Taliban members in return for long-held captive U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
