LEBANON: Lawmakers elect Michel Aoun on Monday as the chosen #Hezbollah candidate as president after four rounds of voting and disputes – @AceNewsServices

#AceNewsReport – Oct.31: Michel Aoun, now president-elect of Lebanon after lawmakers elected him after four rounds of voting, is a former army commander and ally of Hezbollah, Reuters reports.

Aoun eventually won 83 out of 127 votes from lawmakers, but failed to initially get the two-thirds majority many thought he would get. Reuters also says that many see the win as a boon for an Iranian coalition.

LEBANON: ‘ Iran to continue on supporting the leader of Hezbollah ‘

#AceNewsReport – LEBANON:July.26: The leader of the militant Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, said on Saturday that the organization still counts on Iran’s supports after its nuclear deal, Reuters reported.

In his first official reaction to the Iran nuclear deal, Nasrallah said he was sure Iran would surprise critics who believe it would stop supporting Hezbollah.

“We deal with every trust and complete assurance over this”, said Nasrallah during a ceremony honoring the children of fallen Hezbollah fighters.

‘ UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY URGES ISRAEL TO PAY LEBANON COMPENSATION OF $850 MILLION FOR 2006 OIL-SPILL ‘

#AceNewsServices – Dec.21 – The UN General Assembly has nearly unanimously approved a resolution urging Israel to pay Lebanon some $850mn compensation to cover the clean-up cost of an oil spill caused in 2006 by the IDF jets attack on oil storage tanks during the war with Hezbollah.

‘ Oil from the bombed power plant of Jieh contaminating the beaches of Beirut ‘ (Photo from Wikipedia.org)

The UNGA assembly voted 170-6 in favor of the non-binding resolution. Israel, the United States, Canada, Australia, Micronesia and Marshall Islands voted against the motion.

Taking into account the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, which in principle requires the polluter to pay environmental damage costs, the assembly found Israel guilty of the July 15, 2006 environmental disaster.

The disaster was caused by the Israeli Air Force strike on the oil storage tanks in the direct vicinity of the Jiyeh electric power plant in Lebanon. As a result an oil slick covered the Lebanese coastline entirely, stretching all the way to the Syrian coastline.

The assembly decision follows the assessment report by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon which stipulates the value of damage to be $856.4 million. Now the Assembly is asking Israel to provide“prompt and adequate compensation.”

Israel has been highly critical of a UN General Assembly resolution that calls it to compensate Beirut for the damages caused by a major oil spill that was a result of an Israeli air force strike during the Israel-Hezbollah War in July 2006.

“It’s the sort of UN decision that we’re used to, mixing alternative history, manipulation politicization and self-interested narrow-mindedness,” the Israeli mission to the UN said in a statement Friday night, AP reports.

“The UN has never stopped to check the cost of the war on Israel. Apart from the heavy cost in lives, the war caused huge environmental damage in the north of the country. All that, without even mentioning that the war was a consequence of a terrorist organization, Hezbollah,” the statement said.“The time has come for the UN to look around and notice the real sources of the threats against it.”

Calling the extensive pollution caused by the oil tanks’ destruction an “environmental disaster,” the non-binding resolution was supported by 170 members of the General Assembly on Friday. Israel, the United States, Canada and Australia were among six countries voting against it, with three abstentions.

‘ SENIOR OFFICIAL OF HEZBOLLAH SAYS ISIL GROUP THREAT TO THE ENTIRE WORLD ‘

#AceNewsServices – LEBANON – October 29 – A senior official of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has described the ISIL terrorist group as a threat to the Middle East region and the entire world.

' Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem '

‘ Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem ‘

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem said the ISIL Takfiri militants have launched a campaign of fear and terror to expand the terrorist group’s territory.

Saying that the ISIL terrorists have resorted to extreme forms of brutality, the Hezbollah official added, the Takfiri group, supported by some regional and Western countries, suffers from disunity in its ranks since its terrorists come from about eighty countries

The Hezbollah deputy chief reiterated that the ISIL, which commits atrocities in the name of religion, is the biggest threat to Islam and is disliked by both Shia and Sunni Muslims.

This comes as Lebanon has also been rocked by the spillover of the conflict in Syria caused by Takfiri militant groups.

Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah said on October 14 that the Lebanese resistance movement is determined to defeat terrorists and Takfiri militants.

The ISIL terrorists currently control large swathes of territory across Syria and Iraq.

They have committed terrible atrocities in both countries, including mass executions and the beheading of local residents as well as foreign nationals.

‘ HEZBOLLAH DENOUNCES A RULING BY BAHRAINI REGIME TO SUSPEND AL-WEFAQ PARTY ‘

#AceWorldNews – BAHRAIN – October 29 – The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has denounced a ruling by the Bahraini regime to suspend the activities of the country’s prominent opposition party al-Wefaq ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Persian Gulf kingdom.

' Hezbollah slams Bahrain ruling to suspend al-Wefaq '

‘ Hezbollah slams Bahrain ruling to suspend al-Wefaq ‘

In a statement on Tuesday, Hezbollah said the ban on al-Wefaq party “proves that the elections (scheduled for November 22) are sham, pre-determined and far away from representing the will of the Bahraini people and the political powers.”

Hezbollah also said the ban indicates the repressive and totalitarian nature of the Al Khalifa regime, warning against the negative repercussions on the political future of the Persian Gulf state.

“The ruling authorities in Bahrain are not determined to make serious steps in order to solve the incurable political crisis,” said the statement.

On Tuesday, the Manama administrative court imposed the three-month ban on al-Wefaq after it threatened to boycott the November 22 elections.

The opposition party dismissed the ruling as “irrational and irresponsible”, saying, “The tyrannical dictatorship in Bahrain is ruling with an iron fist and moving to destroy the political and social life by blocking the people out.”

Eligible voters in the country will elect members of the 40-seat Council of Representatives in Bahrain next month for the first time after the beginning of anti-regime protests in the country.

In 2011, al-Wefaq pulled 18 of its representatives out of parliament after a deadly regime crackdown on Shia protesters demanding reforms in the country.

LEBANON: ‘ HEZBOLLAH WARN SAUDI ARABIA AGAINST EXECUTING SHIA CLERIC ‘

#AceNewsServices – LEBANON (Beirut)- October 18 – The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has warned Saudi authorities against the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

Free Sheikh Nimr Baqir Al-Nimr

In a statement released on Thursday, the Lebanese movement described the sentence handed down to the cleric as unjust and politically motivated.

“This unjust sentence is political par excellence, and reflects the repressive policy adopted by Saudi authorities against a wide segment of citizens. They cannot tolerate free expression and the peaceful struggle of this oppressed segment to achieve their legitimate demands,” the statement read.

Hezbollah also called on Saudi officials to drop the case against Nimr and listen to the legitimate demands of the citizens seeking to obtain the minimum of their rights as recognized by divine religions and the international law.

The Lebanese resistance movement further urged international rights groups to press Riyadh not to kill the top Shiite scholar.

Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

On Wednesday, Nimr was sentenced to death at the Specialized Criminal Court in the Saudi capital Riyadh. In reaction to the sentence, people took to streets in the city of Qatif in Eastern Province to condemn the move.

Amnesty International has called the death sentence “appalling,” saying the verdict should be quashed, Press TV reported.

Meanwhile, a group of protesters have staged a rally in Bahrain to express solidarity with the dissident Shiite Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia. The protesters denounced the Saudi government for issuing Nimr’s death sentence.

Nimr has been given the death sentence on charges of disturbing the kingdom’s security and making anti-government speeches.

He is the Imam of al-Awamiyya mosque in Qatif and has spent most of his two-year detention in solitary confinement at the al-Ha’ir prison in Riyadh, according to Amnesty International.

‘ Leader of Abdullah Azzam Brigades Al-Qaeda Group Calls on Sunnis to Attack Hezbollah ‘

#AceNewsServices – October 15 – The leader of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades (AAB), an al Qaeda-linked group, has called on Sunnis in Lebanon to attack Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed terrorist organization.

Abdullah Azzam Brigades leader calls on Lebanese people to attack Hezbollah

Abdullah Azzam Brigades leader calls on Lebanese people to attack Hezbollah

Sirajeddine Zurayqat, who has been reportedly named the new emir of the AAB, called for the anti-Hezbollah attacks in a series of posts on his official Twitter feed on Oct. 13. The tweets have also been collected into a single statement from the AAB leader.

Zurayqat addresses “our youth in Tripoli,” saying they should strike Hezbollah fighters and positions, not the Lebanese Army. Hezbollah is the “puppet master” behind the Army and Lebanon’s security services, Zurayqat writes, and it is Hezbollah that has turned the government against the nation’s Sunnis.

“Therefore, strike the puppet master and do not get preoccupied with the tools. If the head is broken, the hands become paralyzed,” Zurayqat argues in a tweet translated by The Daily Star. “You have [Hezbollah’s] centers, checkpoints, supply lines, leaders and members across Lebanon.

Kill them and avenge the children of Lebanon and Syria.”

The AAB leader also argues that Hezbollah has been Israel’s “loyal guard” since 1996. He attempts to recast the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel as “nothing more than breaking the rules of engagement.”

By failing to continue with the war, Zurayqat says, Hezbollah has provided international legitimacy for Israel’s existence.

Zurayqat’s words are intended to undermine public perceptions of Hezbollah as an effective anti-Israeli fighting force. Ironically, Iran and other allied groups have done more to fight Israel than the AAB or any other al Qaeda-backed group.

But the AAB and other al Qaeda-allied groups have claimed responsibility for smaller attacks on Israel, including during the conflict this past summer.

Zurayqat’s call to fight Hezbollah is consistent with the anti-Iranian propaganda campaign being waged by the Al Nusrah Front, al Qaeda’s official branch in Syria.

Al Nusrah operates in Lebanon and has called upon Sunnis in the country to rise up against the Lebanese government, Hezbollah and their Iranian-backers.

Both Al Nusrah and the Islamic State, a former branch of al Qaeda, have fought against Lebanese forces and Hezbollah. There are evenpersistent reports indicating that Al Nusrah and the Islamic State have conducted joint operations in Lebanon despite their bitter rivalry in Syria.

In August, Al Nusrah and the Islamic State took a number of Lebanese servicemen hostage, killing several of them after the negotiations to free them stalled. The Al Nusrah Front has blamed Hezbollah and Iran for the failure to reach a deal that would free the captives.

And Al Nusrah has used its hostages in videos that are intended to sway public opinion in Lebanon against the government and Hezbollah.

In September, Zurayqat addressed the Lebanese hostages in an audio recording that was released online. He blamed the men for joining the Lebanese Army, saying “if you fight the Sunnis there is nothing between you and us except the sword.”

According to Al Akhbar, Zurayqat threatened, “The mujahideen took Iraq in days, and in days they can be in the center of Beirut too.”

The AAB has conducted attacks against Iranian interests in Lebanon. In November 2013, the group claimed credit for twin suicide attacks outside of the Iranian embassy in Beirut.

Nearly two dozen people, including an Iranian cultural attache, were killed and more than 150 others were wounded in the blasts.

BEIRUT: ‘ Hezbollah Fighters Claim Responsibility for Detonated Bomb Against Israeli Patrol in Golan Heights ‘

#AceNewsServices – BEIRUT – October 07 –  Hezbollah fighters have claimed responsibility for a blast in southern Lebanon that left three Israeli soldiers wounded, the Al-Manar Lebanese TV channel reported Tuesday.

' Flag of Hezbollah Movement '

‘ Flag of Hezbollah Movement ‘

Members of Hezbollah “detonated a bomb against an Israeli manned patrol” in Shebaa Farms, a strip of disputed land located at the intersection of the Lebanese-Syrian border and Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Al-Manar reported citing a Hezbollah statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, local sources told RIA Novosti that Israel shelled Lebanon’s Kfar Shuba Heights in response to the attack.

On Sunday, Lebanon and Israel forces opened fired at each other’s positions in the same area of the Lebanese-Israeli border, leaving one Lebanese soldier wounded.

Hezbollah is a paramilitary and political organization originating in Lebanon’s Shiite population, fighting for an Islamic state in Lebanon.

It is recognized as a terrorist group by many Western countries, including Israel, the United States and the United Kingdom, but not by Russia.

Hezbollah is one of Israel’s most powerful opponents, but members of the group, which controls most of Lebanon’s southern regions, have been maintaining a ceasefire since the end of the Lebanon War.

AIR ALGERIE AH5017: ' Hezbollah Leader and French Military Were On-Board at Time of Crash '

#AceWorldNews – ALGIERS – July 27 – According to latest information that either 116 or 118 people on board the Air Algerie flight AH5017 which crashed in the restive northern Mali, at least 33 French military personnel including three senior intelligence officials and a Lebanese Hezbollah leader were present, it has emerged reported IBTimes

Even as the Algerian authorities have asserted that the real cause of the crash could be established only after a thorough investigation, they have not ruled out a terror attack either.

The exact number of people present in the aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas-83, is still unclear – whether it was 116 or 118.

But the local daily Echorouk, citing sources, said there were French troops on board.

There were at least 19 Lebanese passengers and some of them were dual citizens, including an alleged senior Hezbollah figure, who was disguised as a businessman.

A team of Lebanese experts is also on its way to Mali to assist the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, militants from the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MOJWA), locally known as Tawhid and Jihad in West Africa, are said to be stationed near the crash site, which is not far from their stronghold.

The al-Qaeda-inspired outfit is believed to be holding an arsenal of missiles in its possession which were smuggled from Libya.

However, experts have firmly ruled out any ground-to-air attack that brought down the plane.

But speculation over a criminal incident linked to explosives inside the Burkina Faso-Algiers flight has also surfaced.

"We rule out — and have from the start — any ground strike," French junior transport minister Frédéric Cuvillier told France Two television.

` Bahrain’s Opposition Parties Threaten to Boycott Parliamentary Elections ‘

#AceWorldNews – BAHRAIN – May 31 – Bahrain’s opposition parties will boycott the parliamentary elections unless the government guarantees the vote will reflect the will of the people, Reuters reports.

Following the failure of talks with authorities, the Al-Wefaq movement issued a statement saying that it will not participate in the vote later this year “unless a clear political agreement is reached.”

And despite Al Wefaq’s exposed identity in February events to many shocked Bahrainis, it has returned again after the failure of the revolution to represent the same role in the hope of a comeback to work secretly in creating new grounds for a new coup after ten years from now, as stated by Ali Salman, Secretary General of AlWefaq in his first speeches after the evacuation of the roundabout on Hezbolla’s Al Manar TV.

This sends a grave message which translates to : We will come back tougher and stronger with the help of our allies : Hezbolla.

The group also urged the international community to help it pursue a peaceful democratic transition for the Gulf monarchy. Bahrain has been in turmoil since protests led by Shi’ite Muslims erupted in 2011 after similar uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia.

Bahrain is currently under political pressure from the US and the UK governments to support Al Wefaq out of fear from extremists despite the recent evidence showing the society is actually the leader of the extremist groups.

` Lebanon’s Parliament Fail to Name a Replacement President on Third Occasion ‘

#AceWorldNews – LEBANON – May 06 – Lebanon’s parliament speaker postponed Wednesday for a second time a session to elect a new president due to a lack of quorum.

Only 73 lawmakers, the majority from the Western-backed March 14 coalition, attended the session, falling short of the required two-thirds to hold a vote in the 128 member Parliament.

This is the third time that politicians have failed to name a replacement for President Michel Sleiman whose term ends on May 25.

Boycotting politicians from the Hezbollah-led March 8 alliance have scuppered two attempts to hold the vote.

Speaker Nabih Berri adjourned Wednesday’s session to May 15.

The parliament has a constitutional deadline of two months – from March 25 to May 25 – to elect the next head of state.

” Kerry criticises Russia for `enabling’ Assad to stay in Power”

#AceWorldNews says the US Secretary of State John Kerry criticized Russia on Monday for “enabling” Syria’s President Bashar Assad to stay in power. Geneva peace talks broke off without result at the weekend.

The Syrian regime “stonewalled” at the talks and continue to “destroy their own country,” Kerry said during a visit to the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

“They’re doing so with increased support from Iran, from Hezbollah and from Russia,” AFP quoted him as saying. “Russia needs to be a part of the solution and not be distributing so much more weapons and so much more aid,” he said.
