IRC: ‘ Number of Ebola Cases Increasing at Alarming Rate World has Four Weeks Before it Spirals Out of Control ‘

#AceNewsServices – October 06 – The International Rescue Committee (IRC), on behalf of 34 NGOs battling Ebola in West Africa, has warned that the number of cases is doubling roughly every three weeks and the globe has only four weeks to stop the crisis from spiralling out of control.

Recently the Aid organizations have called for a six-point plan to combat the virus at an international summit convened in London to tackle the epidemic.

The charity Save the Children warned that five people are being infected with the virus every hour.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced earlier this week that more than 3,000 people have died from Ebola so-far in West Africa. 6,500 cases have been officially recorded, but the real number is expected to be far higher, as many victims are dying unreported.

Dr. David Nabarro, leading the United Nation’s Ebola response, said that epidemic scares him more than either the early years of the HIV virus and SARS.

Airport screenings for Ebola don’t give a 100 percent guarantee of preventing the spread of the disease. Airport staff may lack competence and the infected can use anti-fever drugs and lies to get aboard the plane, healthcare experts warn.

Passengers flying from Ebola-stricken countries – Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone – are mostly being health screened at departure gates, while the same should be done on arrival as well, believes infection control specialist Sean Kaufman, who was interviewed by Reuters.

Kaufman, who is president of Atlanta-based biosafety company, Behavioral-Based Improvement Solutions, recently travelled from Monrovia to Casablanca to London to Atlanta. At the last two stops he was not fever-screened.

While he was surprised to discover such relaxed attitudes to those arriving from Ebola-stricken regions of Africa in the US and the UK airports, he is simultaneously being skeptical of the airport screenings.

“The fever-screening instruments run low and aren’t that accurate,” he said. “And people can take ibuprofen to reduce their fever enough to pass screening, and why wouldn’t they? If it will get them on a plane so they can come to the United States and get effective treatment after they’re exposed to Ebola, wouldn’t you do that to save your life?”

Travelers flying from Liberia also have to fill in a questionnaire at the airport, asking them whether they had contacts with those sick.

A medical worker from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tai Chen, described it in an interview with Reuters as “process relying on an honour system.”

‘ International Team of Scientists Reconstruct the History of the HIV Pandemic Using Historical Records and DNA Samples of the Virus’

#AceNewsServices (Editors Choice) – October 03 – The HIV pandemic that has now infected 75 million people worldwide emerged in a “perfect storm” of bustling trade routes and migrant workers in central Africa in the 1920’s, researchers said in a study published in the Science journal.

An international team of scientists led by the University of Oxford in the UK and the University of Leuven in Belgium reconstructed the history of the HIV pandemic, using historical records and DNA samples of the virus, tracing it back to the city of Kinshasa, capital of what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Rapid social changes in the early 20th century, along with spreading prostitution and use of unsterilised needles in health clinics, resulted in transmission of the virus, which was also carried to distant parts of the Congo by millions of passengers who used the newly-built railway network, the study found.

This confluence of factors, including urban growth, extensive railway links during Belgian colonial rule and changes in sexual behaviour, combined to see HIV spread across the globe, the scientists said.

Austerity Kills Political Gain

Austerity

Austerity (Photo credit: Anne Helmond)

When a government imposes #austerity on the people who have less, than themselves they create a world of haves and have-nots! But this eventually leads to a society of l want what he/she has, and in many cases, l do not care how l get it! In the case of successive governments, this has led from bankers, to politicians and finally to the man or woman in the street! Now we are told there are no longer 3 classes of people in this country, but many more. The real truth is we live not in a society of classes, but in a society of people who lie for a living and call it business!

The fact that disturbs me the most, is people make comments like ” l did not steal or lie a lot” and then try to acquit themselves by relating it to bankers or politicians, siting examples as they proceed to justify their actions! But the biggest lie of all is the use of the word #austerity, as a way to convince us all, it is for our own good! The truth is if you tell people enough times, they will believe it! The real truth is they have asked for it, and now this government has given them what they asked for,so they have nobody to blame but themselves! The fact is in the end this party will be un-cloaked for what they are, and all they gained will be lost!

As their use of the word #austerity, that gave them the upper hand, will kill their political gain! Of course the real losers are the people who are living in our community, who became victims of this governments,#austerity measures!
