(HONOLULU) JUST IN: FAA REPORT: A Boeing 737 cargo plane with two people on board has crashed off the coast of Hawaii after experiencing engine trouble #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.03: According to the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), the Coast Guard rescued both pilots.

Boeing 737 cargo jet crashes into sea off Honolulu, Hawaii & Coast Guard have rescued both pilots after the aircraft that was en-route from Honolulu to the island of Maui, went down in the water soon after taking off from Daniel K Inouye International Airport ….A Boeing statement reported by US media said they were in contact with authorities and are “closely monitoring the situation”.

Map showing Honolulu and Kahului in Hawaii
The plane was en route from Honolulu to Kahului on the island of Maui when it crashed

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

Footage broadcast by NBC shows a man thought to be one of the pilots being taken away in a wheelchair. He appears to be conscious.

It also shows an ambulance leaving the scene.

According to officials from the state’s transport department, quoted by local outlet Hawaii News Now (HNN), one pilot was airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center and taken to intensive care in critical condition.

Rescuers brought the other pilot to shore by boat, HNN said. He is reportedly in a serious condition with a head injury.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 tweeted that it was a 737-200 cargo aeroplane operated for the carrier Transair since 2014. It was built in 1975 and first delivered to Pacific Western Airlines.

Transair Flight 810 left Honolulu bound for Kahului at 01:33 local time (11:33 GMT), Flightradar 24 said, but turned back quickly afterwards, and crashed into the water after just minutes in the air.

According to its website, Transair has been in business since 1982 and is one of Hawaii’s biggest air cargo operators. It has a fleet of five Boeing 737s, it said.

This aircraft is not the same as a Boeing 737 Max, the aircraft temporarily grounded by authorities after two fatal passenger airline crashes in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The 737 Max was cleared to fly again by US regulators in 2020, but it recently came under further scrutiny.

The mariners claimed they were ejected from their boat when a large wake impacted the vessel.

“On April 1, a new law requiring engine cut-off switches went into effect,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Chad Chao, an operations specialist for Sector Honolulu. “It’s always better to have more safety measures in place and this is a great way to maintain control of your vessel in the unpredictable ocean.”

The new law applies to any motorized boat with three or more horsepower and is less than 26-feet in length. It requires the operator of the boat with the installed ECOS to use the ECOS link, typically a bungee cord lanyard clipped to the operator’s person.

When the operator is underway, the engine will cut off if the operator is separated from the operating area, which can happen if the operator falls or is ejected from the vessel, causing the vessel to stop making way.

The ECOS may also prevent the operator from making contact with the vessel’s spinning propeller, and may aid the operator in safely returning to the vessel.

“Through coordination with multiple response agencies, we were able to save five members of our community and bring them back home to their families,” said Cmdr. Kristen Hahn, search and rescue mission coordinator for Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu . “The mariners having a float plan and communicating that plan with their family directly contributed to their rescue.”

At 7:15 p.m., Thursday, Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam received notification of a 23-foot skiff with five men on board that was overdue from a fishing trip.

Upon notification, JRSC watchstanders issued a SafetyNet broadcast to mariners. Watchstanders deployed an Air Station Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules aircrew from Hawaii, diverted the CGC Myrtle Hazard, and began querying possible volunteer commercial Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System vessels and partners in the area to assist with the search.

At 3:15 p.m., Friday, an Andersen Air Force Base KC-135 Stratotanker crew located the overdue skiff 50 miles southwest of the Polusuk Atoll. The Air Force KC-130 remained on scene until an Air Station Barbers Point C-130 Hercules aircrew arrived and deployed a SAR kit with food, water and handheld radios.

The AMVER vessel Hoegh Bracilia arrived on scene shortly after and recovered all persons with no contact and COVID mitigation procedures. JRSC directed the AMVER vessel to proceed towards Houk Island and remain off-shore overnight. The next morning, the CGC Myrtle Hazard escorted the skiff back to Houk Island safely.
