#AceWorldNews – EGYPT:Dec.18 – A criminal court in the south of Egypt has convicted 41 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi for rioting in August 2013.

The court ruled that all of the convicted individuals had either ordered or participated in the unrest which was precipitated by the violent dispersal of two sit in demonstrations on August 14 of that year.

The sentences handed down ranged from one to 15 years.

The court also opted to acquit 60 defendants in the case.

The case is only one of dozens of legal proceedings initiated against members of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood.

#AceWorldNews – SYRIA:Dec.16 – Around 100 Syrian soldiers and 80 Islamist fighters were killed during a two-day battle over the Wadi al-Deif military base, Reuters reported, citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Al-Qaeda’s Syria wing, the Al-Nusra Front, overran the base, situated next to the country’s main north-south highway in Idlib province on Monday, the monitoring group said.

Two other Sunni Muslim militant groups, Jund al-Aqsa and Ahrar al-Sham, also took part in the battle.

#AceNewsServices – Dec.12 – The Islamic State group said its militants threw a man accused of homosexuality off the roof of a building and then stoned him to death, posting photos to back up the claim.

The Middle East Media Research Institute and the Israeli news site NRG reported that jihadi fighters in the Islamic State-designated region of Wilayat Al-Furat posted photos Wednesday showing armed, masked men throwing a man off a rooftop and then stoning him when he was on the ground. Images showed rocks and bricks next to what appeared to be his lifeless body.

The Islamic State said its court had convicted the man of homosexuality, after which he was executed.

“Following the example of Muslims Caliph Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (ruled 632-634), the Islamic court in Al-Furat province sentenced a man who performed acts of the people of Lot [i.e., homosexual acts] to be cast off the highest place in the town and then stoned to death,” the militant group said in a statement, according to MEMRI.

“Allah’s command [is valid] in both the past and the future,” the statement said.

The “Al-Furat” region, where the execution took place, is the Islamic State group’s self-proclaimed province that includes territories in both Syria and Iraq, and was designed to “break” the borders of the 1916 Sykes-Picot Agreement.

This is not the first time the group has imposed a death sentence for those accused of homosexuality — another facet of its efforts to mete out harsh punishments including stonings and beheadings for what it believes are crimes against Islam.

In November, two people were stoned to death in Syria after being accused of being gay.

In October, a disturbing video emerged from Syria of a woman accused of adultery who was stoned to death even after desperately pleading for her father’s forgiveness. Her father helped the Islamist militants stone her.

Evidence of other recent efforts at imposing Shariah law have appeared online, including images showing armed fighters enforcing Islamic prayer times in Mosul in Iraq.

#AceNewsServices – LONDON – Nov.07 – Police investigating an alleged Islamist terrorism plot targeting the UK have arrested four men.

Counter-terror police arrest four men over alleged plot

Counter-terrorism police detained the men in London and High Wycombe.

The men, aged between 19 and 27, were all taken to police stations in central London after their arrests overnight and remain in custody.

Police said one of the men was arrested in a west London street, with armed officers assisting, but no shots were fired.

The men were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

There is no current indication of a link to Syria or the activities of jihadist group Islamic State, BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said.

The Metropolitan Police said a number of homes and vehicles in west London and the Thames Valley area were being searched by specialist officers as part of the investigation.

In a statement, the force said the arrests and searches were “part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist related terrorism”.

Officers from the Met’s SO15 counter terrorism command are working with the south east counter terrorism unit and MI5.

The arrests – one of which was in High Wycombe and the other three in west London – come after the UK national terror threat level was raised from “substantial” to “severe” in August.

This means a terrorist attack is considered “highly likely”.

#AceNewsServices – NEW YORK – October 25 – Detectives in New York City are probing whether an axe-wielding man who attacked four policemen in broad daylight was motivated by radical Islamic views.

' NYC Axe Attacker Zale Thompson: Are Islamic 'Lone Wolves' Roaming North America? '

NYC Axe Attacker Zale Thompson: Are Islamic ‘Lone Wolves’ Roaming North America? ‘

Zale Thompson, 32, charged at the the officers as they posed for a photograph on a Queens street, injuring two.

He was subsequently shot dead.

Footage of his afternoon attack in Queens’ Jamaica Avenue was captured by a security camera.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said that although there was no immediate indication it was an Islamist attack, terrorism was not being ruled out as motive.

“I think certainly the heightened concern is relative to that type of assault based on what just happened in Canada,” Bratton said.

Two Canadian soldiers were killed in separate attacks carried out by two radicalised Muslim converts this week.

The killings came after the Isis (Islamic State) group called for jihadi sympathisers across the world to launch ‘lone wolf’ attacks on Westerners “wherever they can be found”.

Friends of one of the two Canadian extremsits said his actions came in response to the appeal.

Jihadi monitoring group Site said Thompson’s social media postings suggested he also had “extremist leanings”.

His statements on YouTube and Facebook “display a hyper-racial focus in both religious and historical contexts, and ultimately hint at his extremist leanings,” SITE said.

In September an account believed to be that of Thompson posted a comment to a YouTube video supporting ISIS, seemingly justifying the group’s atrocities.

“If you’re looking for ‘perfect’ Muslims who never make any mistakes in their Jihad, then you will be looking in vain,” he wrote.

“If the Zionists and the Crusaders had never invaded and colonised the Islamic lands after WW1, then there would be no need for Jihad! Which is better, to sit around and do nothing.”

' Zale Thompson's Facebook Page '

‘ Zale Thompson’s Facebook Page ‘

In another posting on Facebook Thompson discussed the possibility of attacks on US soil, Fox News reported.

“America’s military is strong abroad, but they have never faced an internal mass revolt,” he wrote.

“They are weaker at home. We are scattered and decentralised, we can use this as an advantage.

“Helicopters, big military will be useless on their own soil,” he added in another post.

“They will not be able to defeat our people if we use guerrilla warfare. Attack their weak flanks… If you get wounded, who cares.

If you die, who cares.

Eventually they will surrender and then the war will be over.”

A law-enforcement source told the CNN that Thompson had a criminal record in California and was discharged from the Navy for misconduct.

A classmate at the College of New Rochelle in Harlem told The New York Post that Thompson was a “very educated” proponent of “black power” who “always spoke positively” and had shown no signs of sympathy for jihadist movements.

MALI: ‘ United Nations Peace-Keeper Killed in Rocket Attack on Joint UN-French Military Base ‘

#AceNewsServices – October 08 – At least one United Nations peace-keeper was killed in a rocket attack on a joint UN-French military base in the northern Malian town of Kidal on Tuesday, a spokesman for the UN mission said.

Olivier Salgado, a spokesman for the UN force, known as MINUSMA, said between six and eight rockets had been fired at the camp.

“One MINUSMA soldier was killed in the attack,” Salgado said, without giving details on the nationality of the peacekeeper. There were no initial reports of casualties among the French forces from the rocket fire.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, but Islamist militants operating in Mali’s vast desert north have stepped up attacks on foreign forces in recent weeks. Nine UN peacekeepers were killed in an ambush last Friday.

UN peacekeepers were deployed across northern Mali in an effort to secure the country after separatists and Islamist forces took advantage of a power vacuum created by a coup in the capital in 2012 to seize the north.

The Islamists were scattered by French forces early last year and elections have since been held. But there has been a marked increase in attacks in recent months as France moved its focus away from Mali towards a regional security mission.

The group also opposed US military intervention in Syria, including air-strikes on ISIS targets, the Daily Star quoted Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah as saying.

He stressed that the US had created or helped create terrorist groups which the coalition was now seeking to fight in Iraq and Syria.

Lebanon was capable of confronting terrorism alone, he said, adding that the government should negotiate with Islamist militants holding at least 21 Lebanese soldiers and policemen hostage “from a position of strength.”

FRANCE: Arrest’s Six People Suspected of Recruitment as New Law on Jihadists is Approved ‘

#AceBreakingNews – FRANCE (Lyon) – Six people have been arrested near Lyon on suspicions of recruiting young women to join Islamist groups fighting in Syria, France 24 said.

The arrests were made on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in the Lyon area in central France, according to Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

France has today drafted a law aimed at stopping aspiring jihadists from travelling. It includes a ban on foreign travel for up to six months for individuals suspected of radicalisation, and the authorities can invalidate their passports temporarily.

Also and according to the new law, the travel ban could be imposed, “where there are serious reasons to believe that someone is planning to travel abroad to take part in terrorist activities, war crimes or crimes against humanity or in a theatre of operations of terrorist groups and in conditions likely to jeopardize public security upon their return to French territory.”

According to a police source, a brother and a sister were among those detained, with one of the suspects linked to Forsane Alizza (Knights of Pride), an Islamist extremist group that has called for France to become an Islamic caliphate. The group was banned in 2012.

Young French men and women make up the largest contingent of European jihadists fighting in Syria, with authorities saying some 930 French citizens or residents are involved in waging jihad.

About 2,000 Europeans are believed to be fighting in Iraq and Syria. Security officials fear they will use their jihadist training to launch attacks on home soil after returning to Europe on their European passports.

A Frenchman who fought with the Islamic State group in Syria is suspected of launching an attack on a Jewish museum in Brussels in May, killing four people.

LIBYA: ‘ Parliament Dismisses Governor of Central Bank Over Alleged Financial Irregularities ‘

#AceWorldNews – LIBYA (Tripoli) – September 14 – The parliament of Libya has dismissed the governor of the country’s Central Bank over alleged financial irregularities, Reuters reports.

Governor Saddek Omar Elkaber, who is currently in Algiers attending a conference of Arab central bank directors, failed to attend a session at the House of Representatives, which is currently meeting in the city of Tobruk in the east of the country after last month an armed opposition group seized the capital Tripoli.

The Islamist groups that have captured the capital have reinstated the previous parliament as their positions in it were much stronger.

Hashem added that 94 of the 102 lawmakers presented at the session, during which they agreed on this decision. The dismissal is widely seen as a move by the newly elected parliament to secure its financial channels against the ex- parliament General National Congress (GNC) Xinhua reported.

Al-Kabir, allegedly supporting the ex-parliament, responded on Sunday that he will not surrender his position. According to local media, Al-Kabir has long stayed in his residence in Malta and refused to cooperate with the new parliament.

Until a successor is appointed, deputy governor Ali al-Hibri will be in charge at the Central Bank.

TUNISIA: ‘ Islamist Party Ennahda Will Not Contest Presidential Election’

AceWorldNews – TUNISIA – September 08 – Tunisia’s main Islamist party, Ennahda, said on Sunday it would not contest a presidential election in November, in the interest of ensuring an inclusive government for all Tunisians.

Ennahda is one of the two front-runners to win next month’s parliamentary election and provide the next prime minister, but opposition groups say its dominance of the last government almost derailed Tunisia’s transition to democracy following its revolution of 2011.

The president makes senior military and foreign policy appointments as well as nominating the prime minister, and ceding the post to an outside candidate on Nov. 23 sends a signal that Ennahda will avoid making the same mistakes if it wins the parliamentary election.

“We want to send a positive message to the Tunisian people and politicians … We do not want to dominate all contests, especially since Ennahda will feature strongly in the parliamentary election next month,” party spokesman Zied Ladhari told Reuters.

Ennahda won the first free election after the overthrow of autocratic president Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, but was accused by the opposition of seeking to entrench itself in power, disregarding the interests of a large secular urban population and being lenient toward radical Islamists.

When two secular opposition leaders were assassinated by Islamist militants last year, the only stable, democratic government to emerge from any of the Arab Spring revolutions appeared to be in jeopardy, until Ennahda stepped down in favour of a non-partisan interim government.

With a new, broad-based constitution now agreed and in force, the Oct. 26 parliamentary election should complete Tunisia’s transition to full democracy.

Opinion polls taken two months ago put both Ennahda and the main secular party, Nida Tounes, on around 30 percent.
