(TUNISIA) JUST IN: Coup Report: On Monday morning, hours after Saied — a political independent — shut down parliament and deployed soldiers around it Ghannouchi waited outside, demanding to be let in as PM is sacked #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.26: Ghannouchi, head of the moderate Islamist Ennahda party which has played a role in successive coalitions, has come to personify Tunisian politics since the 2011 revolution when he returned in triumph from exile to craft a decade of compromises that averted civil strife but frustrated many…..

#AceDailyNews says #COVID19 takes its toll on Tunisia’s Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi head of moderate Islamist Party has quickly emerged as the main opponent of President Kais Saied’s efforts to reshape the country’s politics, branding his dismissal of the government a coup saying l am 80 years old and throughout my life I have fought against volatility,” he said according Telegram Reuters Wire News

Reuters Wire News, [Jul 26, 2021 at 12:44]

It was a consensual version of democracy that as the economy stagnated and its leaders endlessly bickered, soured many Tunisians on the revolution that had brought them new freedoms of speech, assembly and representation.

As protests erupted in January, the government and old parties of parliament like Ennahda bore the brunt of the public’s wrath. That wave of anger finally broke last week as #COVID19 cases spiked.

On Sunday, hours before Saied’s dramatic escalation of his long-running dispute with the political elite, protesters attacked Ennahda offices around the country.

Seen by secular critics as a Trojan horse for hardline Islamism, but by some conservatives as abandoning their cause, Ghannouchi pragmatically steered the party to ensure it stayed a key player, earning the reputation of an ideological chameleon.

“We succeeded in a peaceful revolution. We succeeded in avoiding civil war. We achieved consensus,” he said after parliament approved a democratic constitution in 2014.

It was a far cry from Ghannouchi’s roots in a banned Islamist movement when he was imprisoned twice and then driven into two decades of exile in the West London suburb of Ealing accused of attempting a coup.

While there he honed his ideology, softening its harder edges with democratic ideas and befriending fellow Islamist leader Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey.

When Tunisians rose up against president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011, Ghannouchi flew home. He landed a week after the autocrat had fled, and was met by an exultant crowd.

Thousands of his supporters filled the terminal, climbed roofs and perched on signposts for a better view, chanting slogans of support, punching the air and sobbing with joy.

As the small greying figure in a red scarf left the building with the throng pressing around him, he took a loudspeaker to exhort them: “Continue your revolution”.

Ennahda won the most seats in Tunisia’s first free election nine months later, the prelude to tense manoeuvring among rival factions with Islamists and secularists increasingly at loggerheads.

As divisions deepened in 2013 and spilled over into the streets, many Tunisians feared the violence that had followed the revolt in neighbouring Libya would break out at home too.

Ghannouchi and secularist president Beji Caid Essebsi agreed a deal to calm the street. It allowed agreement on a new constitution that was greeted upon ratification in parliament with jubilation as rival politicians embraced, weeping, on the floor of the chamber.

But, for some, the compromises rankled.

Opponents of political Islam accused Ghannouchi of turning a blind eye towards the Tunisian jihadists who flocked to join Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and carried out assassinations at home, something he denied.

(DRC) LATEST: Suspected members of a feared Islamist militia killed 10 people in the eastern city of Beni overnight, the army said Thursday, prompting an anti-government protest with youths parading a victim’s body in the streets #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.08: The governments of the African states where jihad groups are active all seem either powerless to stop the jihadis or not interested in doing so.

#AceDailyNews says the Democratic Republic of Congo: Jihadists murder 10 people, prompting anti-government protest: “Islamist militia kill 10 in eastern DRC,” AP, July 5, 2021:

The attack “by ADF enemies” took place in Beni’s southeastern Rwangoma district, lieutenant Anthony Mualushayi told AFP, referring to the Allied Democratic Forces. “We lost 10 civilians,” he added.

An AFP correspondent saw 10 bodies in the morgue of Beni’s general hospital.

Local residents were shocked by the first attack in the Rwangoma district in December 2019.

Angry youths marched on the town hall, carrying a victim’s body and shouting slogans questioning the point of a “state of siege” imposed on May 6 with the aim of quelling ADF violence in North Kivu province as well as Ituri province to the north.

“We thought it was the light at the end of the tunnel, this state of siege,” Rwangoma resident Samuel Kalume told AFP.

“But after 18 months without an attack by the ADF in our neighbourhood, we’re back at square one. It’s very discouraging.”

The protesters shouted “State of siege = zero” and “FARDC = ADF”. FARDC is the name of DRC’s armed forces….

(STOCKHOLM, Sweden.) The Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir is actively recruiting in the heavily migrant-populated no-go suburbs of Rinkeby and Tensta #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Mar.14: The radical group, which operates in several European countries, including the UK and Denmark, has been recruiting new members in the no-go suburbs of Stockholm and has organised private religious lessons for followers:

According to the broadcaster, Hizb ut-Tahrir is attempting to recruit at least 20 people, and many homes in the Rinkeby area have received leaflets from the group. Police say they have also had complaints from locals who question whether the material’s messages are legal.

Martin Marmgren, group manager for the police in Järva, commented on the pamphlets, saying: “Some people are worried. This is an extremist message from an extremist organisation.”

Imam of the local Aysha Mosque, Nasir Ahmad Arif, spoke out against the leaflets, saying their content was not what he and his community stand for.

SVT notes that Hizb ut-Tahrir has been operating in Sweden since 2011, and the group has been running for years in some other European countries, such as neighbouring Denmark.

In 2015, the group called for Danish Muslims to abstain from voting, after claiming democracy was not compatible with Islam.

“We are committed to being active participants in our society, but it has to be on Islam’s terms, without compromising our own principles and values. Democracy is fundamentally incompatible with Islam, and it is a sinking ship,” the group said.

In 2019, the group faced off against anti-Islam protesters in front of the Danish parliament when activist Rasmus Paludan threatened to burn a copy of the Quran.

In the UK in 2018, Hizb ut-Tahrir was accused of using children to spread extremist literature that allegedly provided justification for suicide bombings and stated that women who leave home “uncovered” should be punished.

#AceWorldNews – LEBANON:Jan.11: The Nusra Front terrorist group in Syria, with links to Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack that targeted a cafe in the Lebanese city of Tripoli on Saturday, which killed at least seven people.

The statement was made public via a Twitter account belonging to the group, which said that the attack was planned “in revenge for the Sunnis in Syria and Lebanon.

The country’s Prime Minister Tammam Salam described the attack as “a new attempt to spread the seeds of strife”in Tripoli, which is Lebanon’s second largest city and is home to numerous Sunni Islamist groups.

#AceWorldNews – EGYPT:Dec.18 – A criminal court in the south of Egypt has convicted 41 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi for rioting in August 2013.

The court ruled that all of the convicted individuals had either ordered or participated in the unrest which was precipitated by the violent dispersal of two sit in demonstrations on August 14 of that year.

The sentences handed down ranged from one to 15 years.

The court also opted to acquit 60 defendants in the case.

The case is only one of dozens of legal proceedings initiated against members of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood.

#AceWorldNews – SYRIA:Dec.16 – Around 100 Syrian soldiers and 80 Islamist fighters were killed during a two-day battle over the Wadi al-Deif military base, Reuters reported, citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Al-Qaeda’s Syria wing, the Al-Nusra Front, overran the base, situated next to the country’s main north-south highway in Idlib province on Monday, the monitoring group said.

Two other Sunni Muslim militant groups, Jund al-Aqsa and Ahrar al-Sham, also took part in the battle.

#AceNewsServices – Dec.12 – The Islamic State group said its militants threw a man accused of homosexuality off the roof of a building and then stoned him to death, posting photos to back up the claim.

‘KHUPM – Screenshot from 2014-12-11 21:59:36 ‘

The Middle East Media Research Institute and the Israeli news site NRG reported that jihadi fighters in the Islamic State-designated region of Wilayat Al-Furat posted photos Wednesday showing armed, masked men throwing a man off a rooftop and then stoning him when he was on the ground. Images showed rocks and bricks next to what appeared to be his lifeless body.

The Islamic State said its court had convicted the man of homosexuality, after which he was executed.

“Following the example of Muslims Caliph Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (ruled 632-634), the Islamic court in Al-Furat province sentenced a man who performed acts of the people of Lot [i.e., homosexual acts] to be cast off the highest place in the town and then stoned to death,” the militant group said in a statement, according to MEMRI.

“Allah’s command [is valid] in both the past and the future,” the statement said.

The “Al-Furat” region, where the execution took place, is the Islamic State group’s self-proclaimed province that includes territories in both Syria and Iraq, and was designed to “break” the borders of the 1916 Sykes-Picot Agreement.

This is not the first time the group has imposed a death sentence for those accused of homosexuality — another facet of its efforts to mete out harsh punishments including stonings and beheadings for what it believes are crimes against Islam.

In November, two people were stoned to death in Syria after being accused of being gay.

In October, a disturbing video emerged from Syria of a woman accused of adultery who was stoned to death even after desperately pleading for her father’s forgiveness. Her father helped the Islamist militants stone her.

Evidence of other recent efforts at imposing Shariah law have appeared online, including images showing armed fighters enforcing Islamic prayer times in Mosul in Iraq.

#AceNewsServices – LONDON – Nov.07 – Police investigating an alleged Islamist terrorism plot targeting the UK have arrested four men.

Counter-terror police arrest four men over alleged plot

Counter-terror police arrest four men over alleged plot

Counter-terrorism police detained the men in London and High Wycombe.

The men, aged between 19 and 27, were all taken to police stations in central London after their arrests overnight and remain in custody.

Police said one of the men was arrested in a west London street, with armed officers assisting, but no shots were fired.

The men were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

There is no current indication of a link to Syria or the activities of jihadist group Islamic State, BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said.

The Metropolitan Police said a number of homes and vehicles in west London and the Thames Valley area were being searched by specialist officers as part of the investigation.

In a statement, the force said the arrests and searches were “part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist related terrorism”.

Officers from the Met’s SO15 counter terrorism command are working with the south east counter terrorism unit and MI5.

The arrests – one of which was in High Wycombe and the other three in west London – come after the UK national terror threat level was raised from “substantial” to “severe” in August.

This means a terrorist attack is considered “highly likely”.

#AceNewsServices – NEW YORK – October 25 – Detectives in New York City are probing whether an axe-wielding man who attacked four policemen in broad daylight was motivated by radical Islamic views.

NYC Axe Attacker Zale Thompson: Are Islamic ‘Lone Wolves’ Roaming North America? ‘

Zale Thompson, 32, charged at the the officers as they posed for a photograph on a Queens street, injuring two.

He was subsequently shot dead.

Footage of his afternoon attack in Queens’ Jamaica Avenue was captured by a security camera.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said that although there was no immediate indication it was an Islamist attack, terrorism was not being ruled out as motive.

“I think certainly the heightened concern is relative to that type of assault based on what just happened in Canada,” Bratton said.

Two Canadian soldiers were killed in separate attacks carried out by two radicalised Muslim converts this week.

The killings came after the Isis (Islamic State) group called for jihadi sympathisers across the world to launch ‘lone wolf’ attacks on Westerners “wherever they can be found”.

Friends of one of the two Canadian extremsits said his actions came in response to the appeal.

Jihadi monitoring group Site said Thompson’s social media postings suggested he also had “extremist leanings”.

His statements on YouTube and Facebook “display a hyper-racial focus in both religious and historical contexts, and ultimately hint at his extremist leanings,” SITE said.

In September an account believed to be that of Thompson posted a comment to a YouTube video supporting ISIS, seemingly justifying the group’s atrocities.

“If you’re looking for ‘perfect’ Muslims who never make any mistakes in their Jihad, then you will be looking in vain,” he wrote.

“If the Zionists and the Crusaders had never invaded and colonised the Islamic lands after WW1, then there would be no need for Jihad! Which is better, to sit around and do nothing.”

' Zale Thompson's Facebook Page '

‘ Zale Thompson’s Facebook Page ‘

In another posting on Facebook Thompson discussed the possibility of attacks on US soil, Fox News reported.

“America’s military is strong abroad, but they have never faced an internal mass revolt,” he wrote.

“They are weaker at home. We are scattered and decentralised, we can use this as an advantage.

“Helicopters, big military will be useless on their own soil,” he added in another post.

“They will not be able to defeat our people if we use guerrilla warfare. Attack their weak flanks… If you get wounded, who cares.

If you die, who cares.

Eventually they will surrender and then the war will be over.”

A law-enforcement source told the CNN that Thompson had a criminal record in California and was discharged from the Navy for misconduct.

A classmate at the College of New Rochelle in Harlem told The New York Post that Thompson was a “very educated” proponent of “black power” who “always spoke positively” and had shown no signs of sympathy for jihadist movements.

MALI: ‘ United Nations Peace-Keeper Killed in Rocket Attack on Joint UN-French Military Base ‘

#AceNewsServices – October 08 – At least one United Nations peace-keeper was killed in a rocket attack on a joint UN-French military base in the northern Malian town of Kidal on Tuesday, a spokesman for the UN mission said.

Olivier Salgado, a spokesman for the UN force, known as MINUSMA, said between six and eight rockets had been fired at the camp.

“One MINUSMA soldier was killed in the attack,” Salgado said, without giving details on the nationality of the peacekeeper. There were no initial reports of casualties among the French forces from the rocket fire.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, but Islamist militants operating in Mali’s vast desert north have stepped up attacks on foreign forces in recent weeks. Nine UN peacekeepers were killed in an ambush last Friday.

UN peacekeepers were deployed across northern Mali in an effort to secure the country after separatists and Islamist forces took advantage of a power vacuum created by a coup in the capital in 2012 to seize the north.

The Islamists were scattered by French forces early last year and elections have since been held. But there has been a marked increase in attacks in recent months as France moved its focus away from Mali towards a regional security mission.
