` Jordan’s Ambassador to Libya Freed After Abduction by Gunmen in Tripoli ‘

#AceWorldNewsTRIPOLI – May 13 – Jordan’s ambassador to Libya has been freed after being abducted by gunmen in the capital, Tripoli, last month.

Jordanian Minister FreedFawaz al-Itan was released unharmed and was on his way home on Tuesday, Jordanian officials said.

The kidnappers had reportedly demanded the release of a Libyan Islamist militant in exchange, but it is unclear whether this was granted.

Diplomats have been the targets of a number of abductions in Libya in recent months amid continuing instability.

The central government has struggled to assert its authority over the armed groups and tribesmen who helped end Muammar Gaddafi‘s 41-year rule in 2011.

‘Doing well’

Mr Itan was kidnapped in the Libyan capital on 15 April when masked gunmen shot at his car, wounding the driver.

Libyan state media quoted Jordan’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Judeh, as saying he was already on his way back to his homeland after his release on Tuesday.

“The ambassador is doing well and he is now making his way back to his country,” Mr Judeh was quoted as saying.

He gave no further details about the circumstances of the release.

Four weeks ago masked gunmen seized the Jordanian ambassador in the Libyan capital on Tuesday, officials said, the latest in a wave of abductions and kidnappings that have swept Libya underscoring the lawlessness in the North African nation since the 2011 overthrow of late dictator Muammar Qadhafi.

According to the spokesman of the Libyan Foreign Ministry, several masked gunmen in civilian clothes and in two cars opened fire at Ambassador Fawaz al-Etan’s vehicle early  Tuesday morning in Tripoli.

The assailants wounded the Jordanian ambassador’s driver and forced Mr. al-Etan out at gunpoint, said the spokesman, Said al-Aswad.

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Sabah al-Rafie confirmed the kidnapping but had no further details.

She said the Jordanian government was following the matter closely with the Libyan authorities.

The motives behind the abduction were not clear and no one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

` Nine Libyan Soldiers Killed as Islamist Fighters tried to Storm the Benghazi City Security HQ ‘

#AceNewsServices – BENGHAZI – LIBYA – May 02 – (Reuters) – Nine Libyan soldiers were killed on Friday when Islamist fighters tried to storm the Benghazi city security headquarters in an attack authorities blamed on the militant group Ansar al-Sharia.

Libya’s weak central government is struggling to control armed groups, militias and brigades of former rebels who helped oust long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in the 2011 civil war and now refuse to disarm.

The dead were soldiers of a special forces unit, the Tripoli government said, for the first time openly blaming Ansar al-Sharia, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States.

“Armed brigades, including those called Ansar al-Sharia and other criminal groups, attacked the security headquarters in Benghazi with light and heavy weapons ” a government statement said.

Special forces have often clashed with the heavily-armed militant group in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, but the government with its nascent army had been reluctant to name it publicly for fear of provoking tensions.

EXPLOSIONS

Huge explosions could be heard during a fire-fight in the early morning that lasted more than an hour. Special forces later secured the headquarters, near the city centre.

Helicopters and war planes were flying over Benghazi in the afternoon.

Occasional gunfire and smaller explosions could still be heard during the day. As many as 15 more troops were also injured in the attack.

The bodies of two soldiers, kidnapped by militants during the attack, were found later bearing signs of torture, a medical source said.

` Libya Commences Drafting New Constitution to State Libya is a Muslim Country and Sharia is Primary Legislator '

#AceNewsServices – TRIPOLI – April 22 – The 47 elected committee members tasked with drafting Libya’s new constitution have convened in Bayda, east of Benghazi.

The multi-regional body now has 120 days to draft a constitution.

Last year Libya’s parliament passed a resolution declaring that Libya is a Muslim country and that Islamic Sharia is the primary source of its legislation.

The new constitution aims to secure order following the international military invasion and assassination of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

December 04 – TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Libya’s national assembly voted on Wednesday to make Islamic law, or sharia, the source of all legislation, in an apparent bid by moderate Islamists to outflank ultra-conservative militants who have been gaining influence.

Two years after the NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is still in messy transition, with no new constitution, a temporary government and nascent security forces struggling to contain militias and former rebels.

The immediate impact of the statement was not clear in the already overwhelmingly Muslim country, though it could affect criminal and financial legislation.

“The legislative system does not contain many laws that contradict Islamic law so it is easy to say sharia would be the sole source of legislation,” said Ibrahim al-Gharyani of the National Forces Alliance party.

But lawmakers suggested at least part of the reason for the statement from the General National Congress (GNC) was political.

` Trial of `Muammar Gaddafi's ' Son's and Three Dozen Officials will Open on Monday over War Crimes '

#AceWorldNews – TRIPOLI – LIBYA – April 13 – (ALJ) – The trial for which Libyans have waited three years opens in Tripoli on Monday, when two of Muammar Gaddafi’s sons and three dozen former officials go to court over a litany of alleged war crimes committed during the 2011 uprising that toppled the former Libyan president.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, his younger brother, Saadi, and former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi are among key figures of the former regime facing charges ranging from murder to plundering state coffers. Also among the 38 defendants are former Prime Ministers al-Baghdadi al-Mahmudi and Bouzid Dorda.

For prosecutors, it is a chance to finally call to account key members of the Gaddafi regime for alleged crimes committed during the uprising and the decades of dictatorship that preceded it.

Security is expected to be tight at Tripoli’s Hadba prison, which has been turned into a fortress protected by barbed wire, armoured cars and machine-gun nests.

Prosecutors say more than 200 witnesses have been interviewed and more than 40,000 pages of evidence assembled, along with video and audio evidence that allegedly shows the defendants giving instructions to security units to open fire on protesters.

(Beirut) – Libya has failed to grant basic due process rights to Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and other detained former officials of the Gaddafi government.

On January 23, 2014, Human Rights Watch interviewed Gaddafi in an office at a base in the town of Zintan. The base is under the control of a guard force that is detaining Gaddafi at an undisclosed location, and says it operates under Defence Ministry authority.
Human Rights Watch also visited the former military intelligence chief Abdullah Sanussi and former Prime Ministers al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi and Abuzaid Dorda, in Al-Hadba Corrections Facility in Tripoli on January 23.

Libyan Judicial Police are, at least formally, in charge of administering the prison. The General Prosecutor authorized the visits, the Libyan Government facilitated the visit at Al-Hadba, and the Zintan Local Council facilitated the visit to Gaddafi. http://www.hrw.org/news/2014/02/13/libya-gaddafi-son-ex-officials-held-without-due-process

` Unidentified Gunmen have Kidnapped a ` Tunisian Diplomat ‘ in the ` Libyan ‘ capital of Tripoli ‘

#AceWorldNews – TRIPOLI – 22 March – Unidentified gunmen kidnapped a Tunisian diplomat in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Saturday, according to Tunisia’s foreign minister.

This is the latest in a long list of diplomatic abductions in the country; in January, a South Korean diplomat was kidnapped as he was leaving his office in Tripoli.

Five Egyptian diplomats were also briefly abducted.

Three years after the revolt against former leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is struggling to impose security as a melee of former rebels, Islamist militants, and ex-fighters refuse to disarm.

` Tripoli International Airport Closed after Rocket Attack ‘

#AceBreakingNews – March 21 -Libyan authorities decided to close the international airport in Tripoli after a mortar attack. The Libyan news agency LANA reported two rockets landed and exploded on the runway.

It’s not clear how strong the damage has been. However, none of the employees of the airport was injured.

“We suspended the air service and cancelled departures for safety reasons”, said the representative of the Airport.

“We hope that in a few hours the situation stabilizes”, he added.

So far, none of the rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

After winning the so-called revolution on February 17 and end the civil war that led to the overthrow and murder of Muammar Gaddafi, Libya’s new government, despite all attempts, still cannot restore order in the country.

` Libyan City of Benghazi witnesses `Car-Bomb Explode ‘outside `Military Base ‘Killing 5 Soldiers and Wounding 14 People ‘

#AceWorldNews A car bomb outside a military base in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi has killed five soldiers and wounded another 14 people, according to Libyan security officials, AP reports.

The bomb went off outside the base just after an inauguration ceremony for new officers. Benghazi was the birthplace of the 2011 uprising to oust former leader Muammar Gaddafi and has seen a sharp rise in the number of attacks targeting the military and the police.

The central government in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, has proved ineffectual in controlling unruly militias, which have de facto control of many areas of the country.

Powerful militias from the western town of Zintan gave the General National Congress, Libya’s highest authority, the deadline, or said it would kidnap any lawmaker.

Commanders from the Zintan militias appeared on television on Tuesday and blamed the Muslim Brotherhood and “ideological and extremist groups” for the country’s chronic instability since the 2011 uprising that toppled the four-decade rule of Muammar Gaddafi.
