‘ Jordan’s Arab Bank Found Guilty of Assisting Hamas ‘

#AceNewsServices – NEW YORK- September 24 – After just 2 days of deliberation by a jury, following a 5 week trial, and 10 years of legal battles, Jordan’s Arab Bank has been found guilty of helping “Hamas militants carry out a wave of violence in Israel that killed and wounded hundreds of Americans,” according to Bloomberg news.

' Arab Bank found Guilty of Funding Terrorism '

‘ Arab Bank found Guilty of Funding Terrorism ‘

The financial assistance to Hamas took place between the years 1998 and 2004.

The trial took place in a Brooklyn federal court.

New York (AFP) – A New York jury will begin deliberations Friday on whether Arab Bank is guilty of aiding terrorism and transferring millions of dollars to Hamas during the second Palestinian uprising.

The hugely respected Jordan-based multinational went on trial in mid-August after 300 US relatives and victims of 24 attacks in Israel and the Palestinian territories filed a federal law suit in 2004.

The defence told the jury on Thursday there is no evidence Arab Bank executives supported terrorism and disputed that the institution knowingly made payments to designated terrorists.

The plaintiffs claim the bank transferred more than $70 million to an alleged Saudi terror entity, Palestinian charities they claim were a front for Hamas and 11 globally designated terrorist clients.

The trial heard that the Arab Bank transferred $60,000 to Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin — who was assassinated by Israel in 2004 — due to a spelling mistake of his name which was not detected by banking software.

They also claimed that Hamas, which the US officially designates as a terror group, directed the distribution of the money from the Saudi fund.

Stephens said Arab Bank provided routine banking services and that no charity — including the Saudi committee — to whom it transferred funds were on any US, UN or EU blacklist at the time.

He said that between 2000 and 2004 its Saudi fund payments to 15,000 people each month were public and approved by Israel.

Werbner said that assertion was “complete fabrication.”

The plaintiffs question 180 of the Saudi payments to 24 families of purported Hamas operatives, or about one percent of the total, Stephens said.

He said there was no evidence to prove that any money transferred by Arab Bank had been used to finance terror attacks and that the cycle of violence in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict had nothing to do with his client.

They’re guilty,” said Werbner.

NEW YORK: ‘ Judge Sentences Abu Ghaith to Life In Prison ‘

#AceBreakingNews – NEW YORK – A New York judge has sentenced Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law to life in prison for his conviction in a terrorism case. Sulaiman Abu Ghaith (SOO’-lay-mahn AH’-boo GAYTH) was sentenced by Judge Lewis Kaplan on Tuesday morning.

Abu Ghaith Testifies his Role was Religious - creenshot from 2014-09-23 15:46:35

Abu Ghaith was convicted in March on charges he conspired to kill Americans in his role as a spokesman for al-Qaida.

The Kuwaiti imam became the voice of al-Qaida recruitment videotapes after the Sept. 11 attacks. He warned in one that “the storm of planes” wouldn’t stop.

Abu Ghaith testified at trial that his role was strictly religious.

Defence attorney Stanley Cohen asked the judge to impose a 15-year sentence. A prosecutor called for life in prison.

Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law was due in court to face a possible life sentence for his role as the spokesman for al-Qaida following the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

‘ Cameron Meeting Rouhani Possible Nuclear Trade-Off ‘

#AceNewsServices – NEW YORK – September 23 – David Cameron is to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani BBC news reported.

The New York meeting comes after the US and its allies began air strikes against Islamic State (IS) in Syria, but the proposed nature of Iranian action is unclear.

It will be the first time a UK prime minister has met an Iranian president since the Iran’s revolution in 1979.

The UK government said it had not joined Syria strikes “yet”, but debate may begin in Parliament this week.

BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith said there was a “very strong likelihood” that Parliament would be recalled from recess “within the next few days” to sanction any British military action.

Shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna said should Labour be asked to consider the case for action, it would apply the same criteria it did when asked about British military intervention against the Syrian regime, which was rejected by MPs last year.

But Mr Umunna told BBC Radio 4’s Today he thought the public made a distinction between the threat posed by IS and that of Syria.

“This is not a party political issue,” he said. “IS need to be eliminated. They are an evil organisation.

Mr Cameron and Mr Rouhani spoke by phone in November, but the talks later will be their first face-to-face meeting.

The PM was likely to set out “direction and options” during his speech at the United Nations’ headquarters in New York, a government source told BBC News.

Nuclear ‘trade-off’

BBC correspondent Nick Bryant said relations between the UK and Iran had “thawed considerably” in recent months.

‘ Egyptian Adel Abdul Bary Pleading Guilty to Charges Connected to 1998 Bombings of Embassies ‘

#AceNewsServices – September 19 – An Egyptian man, Adel Abdul Bary, said on Friday he would plead guilty in New York to charges connected with the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, Reuters reported.

' Adel Abdul Bary on Trial '

‘ Adel Abdul Bary on Trial ‘

Bary, 54, said in court he would plead guilty to making a threat to use an explosive device and conspiracy to murder Americans.

The plea comes two months before he was set to face trial in a federal court alongside two co-defendants, Libyan Anas al-Liby and Saudi Khalid al-Fawwaz.

The bombings killed 224 people. Bary and Fawwaz helped disseminate statements of responsibility for the group, according to an earlier criminal indictment.

NEW YORK: ‘ Aafia Siddiqui Seeks to Drop US Legal Appeal over Unfair Legal System ‘

#AceNewsServices (Exclusive) – September 18 – NEW YORK: Pakistan-born neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui has become a rallying cry for militant groups demanding her release from a US prison. But in a little-noticed move she is trying to abandon her legal fight for freedom, saying the US court system is unjust.

' Seeking to Drop US Appeal Over Unfairness of Legal System '

‘ Seeking to Drop US Appeal Over Unfairness of Legal System ‘

Islamic militants in Syria, Algeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan have made Aafia’s release a condition for freeing certain foreign hostages. Islamic State, for example, proposed swapping American journalist James Foley for her, but he was executed after their demands, which also included an end to US airstrikes in Iraq, were not met.

A 42-year-old mother of three with degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University, Aafia is serving an 86-year sentence in a prison medical centre in Texas. A jury in 2010 convicted her of attempting to shoot and kill a group of FBI agents, US soldiers and interpreters who were about to interrogate her for alleged links to Al Qaeda.

Aafia, who during her trial interrupted proceedings repeatedly and at times was removed from the courtroom, wrote to US District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan on July 2 seeking to end her most recent appeal.

I refuse to participate in this system of total injustice that has punished and tortured me repeatedly, and continues to do so, without my having committed a crime,” she wrote.

Aafia said she wanted to be sent home to Pakistan through diplomacy, not through the legal system. But her lawyer Robert Boyle told the judge he was concerned she did not fully understand that as a consequence of her request she might not have another opportunity to challenge her conviction.

US prosecutors were scheduled to respond to Aafia’s letter with their own letter by late on Wednesday. Aafia was likely unaware of the attempt by Islamic State to free her in a prisoner swap for Foley, Boyle told Reuters. Federal Medical Center Carswell severely restricts her contact with the outside world, he said.

Aafia already lost one appeal. In 2012, an appeals court rejected arguments that her trial was unfair and upheld her conviction.

Her latest appeal, filed in May, argues that Aafia received an unfair trial because she was not allowed to fire defence lawyers who were paid by the Pakistani government, and that US prosecutors failed to turn over important evidence.

FEMA: ‘ Looking to Recoup Aid Payments of $5.8 Million From Hurricane Victims in Super-Storm Sandy ‘

#AceWorldNews – UNITED STATES (New York) – September 11 – After Super-storm Sandy hit the East Coast nearly two years ago, the federal government quickly sent out $1.4 billion in emergency disaster aid to the hurricane’s victims.

NYC Sandy Storm

Now, thousands of people might have to pay back their share.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is scrutinizing about 4,500 households that it suspects received improper payments after the storm, according to program officials and data obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request.

As of early September, FEMA had asked around 850 of those households to return a collective $5.8 million. The other cases were still under review.

FEMA’s campaign to recover overpayments, called “recoupment” in agency lingo, typically involves inadvertent violations of eligibility rules, bureaucratic mistakes or missing documentation, rather than outright fraud.

Many people asked to return money were deemed ineligible because their damaged properties were vacation houses or rental properties, not their primary residences. Others had double dipped into the aid pool, with more than one household member getting payments. Some received FEMA money for things later covered by insurance.

As of July 30, the average demanded refund was $6,987, a sum that could be difficult for many, given the modest annual incomes of most aid applicants. Roughly half of the households under scrutiny reported an annual gross income of $30,000 or less.

The larger pool of cases still under review as of that date involved $53 million in aid payments – or about 3.7 percent of the total given out by FEMA through its individuals and households program – though any potential refunds would likely involve only a portion of that money.

Other key moments will be observed throughout the morning.

The program is expected to conclude by 12:30 p.m. “Tribute in Light” twin beams representing the two destroyed towers will shine from sunset Sept. 11 until sunrise Sept. 12.

Pentagon. The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial will be closed to the public until 11 a.m. The commemoration will begin at 9:30 a.m., hosted by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey. President Obama is scheduled to speak at the ceremony, which will observe a moment of silence at 9:37 a.m., the moment an airliner hit the Pentagon.

Shanksville, Pa. The Flight 93 National Memorial will be open to the public all day. An observance of the crash there will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a reading of the names of Flight 93 passengers and crew, ringing of Bells of Remembrance, a wreath laying and brief remarks by former House speaker Dennis Hastert.

‘ Woman Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Sending Barack Obama Ricin Laced Letters ‘

#AceWorldNewsUNITED STATES (Texas) –  July 16 – A woman from Texas has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after sending US President Barack Obama and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg letters laced with highly toxic ricin.

Thirty-six-year-old Shannon Guess Richardson was sentenced Wednesday after having pleaded guilty in December to possessing and producing a biological toxin.

Richardson was arrested in June 2013 after authorities said she tried to implicate her estranged husband after he filed for divorce.

Prosecutors say Richardson, who had minor acting roles in film and television, mailed three letters from New Boston, outside Texarkana, then went to police and claimed that her husband did it.

Ground Zero Cross: Court presses atheist group to explain why artifact is ‘offensive’

The World Trade Center Cross waits to be blessed by a Franciscan priest, New York

Well yet again religion or the lack of it raises it’s ugly stupid head. Why on EARTH can anyone be offended by this? What happened to live and let live. Why can a Muslim Mosque show it’s signs and banners and NEVER a word is spoken. Yesterday I did a blog about an American man being told to remove his American Flag because it might offend Muslims! What on Earth is going on. Why can’t people just be clever, the World’s gone mad!

A federal appeals court said this week that an atheist group trying to keep the so-called Ground Zero Cross out of the National September 11 Memorial Museum must better explain how displaying the artifact is “offensive” and violates members’ constitutional rights. The 17-foot-tall, steel beam “cross” was found in the rubble of the World Trade Center twin towers in New York that fell during the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The cross became a sort of shrine or place of comfort for first responders who often prayed there and left messages or flowers. It was moved away from the debris a few weeks later and became a tourist attraction through several years of reconstruction. American Atheists filed the suit in 2011, which was thrown out last year by a federal judge in the Southern District of New York.

The appeals court ruling Thursday cites an amicus brief filed by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a nonprofit law firm that specializes in church-state law and protecting the free expression of all religious traditions. “We’re thrilled that the court picked up on this issue,” said group lawyer Eric Baxter, whose brief argued that American Atheists had no right to bring a lawsuit in the first place. “Courts should not allow people to sue just because they claim to get ‘dyspepsia’ over a historical artifact displayed in a museum.” The museum officially opened on May 21.

Just my way of thinking

The judge has now given the plaintiffs until July 14 to file supplemental legal briefs before deciding whether the case will proceed. Among the questions that must be answered in the new filings is how the offensiveness of the cross, which the plaintiffs view as a Christian symbol for all 9-11 victims, becomes a “constitutional injury.” The other question is — if the plaintiffs indeed feel displaying the cross “marginalizes them as American citizens” — then how is that a “particular and concrete injury” compared to just “the abstract stigmatization of atheists generally.” The judge has also asked the plaintiffs to substantiate their claim the museum and Sept. 11 memorial are getting taxpayer dollars. “Taking personal offense is not an injury that warrants invoking the power of the courts to shut down everything you disagree with,” Baxter also said. “The Constitution is not a personal tool for censoring everyone’s beliefs but your own.”

This was said. How can this be. Is there an Obama Muslim Connection? Just asking what others think

‘ Fire Tears Through Staten Island Town Houses ‘

#AceWorldNews – NEW YORK (Staten Island) – June 05 – Fire tore through three town-houses on Staten Island early Thursday, injuring 34 people, authorities and witnesses said.

About 200 fire-fighters responded to the blaze that erupted at about  (05:00 GMT) and battled the five-alarm fire for several hours until the early morning, AP reported.

A New York Fire Department spokesman said 23 fire-fighters and 11 civilians suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious, but none was considered life-threatening.

He said the flames were so heavy that fire-fighters were unable to say where the fire originated.

That would be part of the investigation into what caused the blaze, he said.

“My life is in there,” said Cindy Piscopo, who lived on the first floor of one of the four-family town-houses.

She said she was awakened by a top-floor neighbour knocking on her door and yelling at her to get out.

`Protestant Welfare Agencies and Catholic Charities Launch New York Anti-Poverty Study ‘

#AceNewsServices – NEW YORK – May 15 – The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, and UJA-Federation of New York Launch Anti-Poverty Research Study.

NEW YORK, May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, and UJA-Federation of New York, three major NY faith-based organizations, have collectively launched a new research study that will identify public policies that could have a significant impact in reducing poverty in New York City. This collaboration is born out of the shared values and traditions for caring for people in need and the extensive reach of their combined networks in helping all New Yorkers. The study was initiated in March 2014 and preliminary results are due this summer.

The Urban Institute has been retained to conduct the research, based on their work with the Community Advocates Public Policy Institute in Wisconsin. This is the first time UI will utilise this model in analysing New York City specific data. The Urban Institute will study a set of public policies that focus on core human necessities: work, housing, food and financial assistance, for example, policies on transitional jobs; senior and disability tax credits; increased child care subsidies and supplements for low-wage workers. After receiving the results, the three organizations will reconvene to determine potential next steps.

While New York City and State have enacted numerous anti-poverty measures, poverty remains pervasive and seemingly intractable throughout New York, with 1.7 million people or 21% living below the federal poverty line. This research will use a slightly modified version of the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) to assess NYC poverty levels. The SPM is a more accurate accounting of poverty than the official poverty measure because it accounts for the effects of important government benefits and taxes, work expenses (including childcare), and medical expenses on households’ standards of living (which the official measure does not.)

“Faith-led organizations have a rich history of addressing the needs of their communities and that’s why it is paramount that we come together to address the needs of NYC’s poorest residents. New York City can become a place where the social and economic well-being of all of its residents is a priority, but this can only be achieved if policies and programs that strengthen our most vulnerable communities are implemented,” said Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO and Executive Director, Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies.

“In providing help and creating hope for thousands, Catholic Charities encounters obstacles in needless red tape and poorly designed public policies and programs. These impede individuals and families from meeting their basic human needs. This research seeks to understand how well designed policies and properly implemented programs can significantly reduce waste not only in public expenditures but even more importantly in unrealized human potential. Our mission of building a more just and compassionate society founded on our core belief that every person is made in the image of God compels us to do this,” said Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York.

“Our faith-based groups share a deep, collective, abiding concern about poverty alleviation. Overall statistics of those who live in poverty are alarming, and despite billions of dollars invested by government and philanthropy in this area annually, it is still an immense challenge to effectively help those who live in poverty. We are hopeful that this research will contribute to critical, life-saving, public policy discussions,” said John Ruskay, CEO and Executive Vice President, UJA-Federation of New York.

` Rabbi and Three Others Indicted for Stealing $12.4 Million from Disabled Children Funding ‘

#AceWorldNews – NEW YORK – May 15 – Rabbi Samuel Hiller and three others have been indicted for stealing over $12.4 million in public aid for disabled children.

The charges include grand larceny, identity theft, and falsifying business records at one of the city’s largest providers of special education services for disabled children, according to a news release issued Tuesday by Queens County District Attorney Richard Brown.

“It is disheartening to see a betrayal of the magnitude alleged in this indictment,” Brown said in a statement.

The men allegedly diverted money belonging to Island Child Development Centre, which serves Orthodox preschool children with disabilities, used it for personal expenses, home repairs and other business endeavours.

If convicted, each of the men would face up to 25 years in prison.

` Six Car Oil-Train Derailment Cause Unknown Though One of 100 Cars is Known to have Leaked ‘

#AceWorldNews – COLORADO – May 09 – Emergency crews have been working to clear a six-car oil train derailment that leaked some crude into a ditch Friday in northern Colorado, AP reported.

A vacuum truck was brought in to suck up the spill, with tanker trucks nearby to transfer the oil.

State and local emergency officials determined that one car of the 100-car train was leaking after the 8 a.m. derailment near LaSalle, about 45 miles north of Denver.

The cause of the derailment was under investigation, said Micki Trost, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Division of Emergency Management. Crews had contained the spill to a ditch away from any waterways, Trost said.

The amount of oil spilled wasn’t immediately known, but a vacuum truck was brought in to suck up the spill. Tanker trucks lined up nearby to transfer the oil.

According to The Greeley Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/m96ows9 ), the train was loaded in nearby Windsor with Niobrara crude and was bound for New York. Niobrara oil comes from the Niobrara shale formation in Colorado, Wyoming and Kansas. It’s not considered as volatile as Bakken crude from North Dakota and eastern Montana.

` French Woman Alic Aida Refused Boarding US Flight and Blacklisted as Her Name Sounds like Al Qaeda ‘

#AceNewsServices – NEW YORK – April 29 – A French woman travelling with her husband and two small children was not allowed to board a flight to New York last week, possibly because her name sounds too close to Al Qaeda.

Aida Alic, 33, says she’s been blacklisted by the U.S. because her last name said before her first name — as it appears on her passport — sounds too close to the international terror group.

Alic arrived with her family for their connecting flight at Geneva airport last Wednesday, headed to New York for vacation, Britain’s Telegraph reported.

But Swiss Air officials told her they had received word from U.S. border authorities that she was barred from entering the U.S.

The airline did not provide any other specifics, so the family had to return home to the French Alps. The couple had paid more than $3,700 for their lost flights.

Later at home, Alic searched official U.S. travel sites to try to determine why she was stopped, and realized that it must be her name.

“Alic Aida, Al Qaeda. When friends make the play on words to wind me up, I am used to it, but not this,” Alic told Le Dauphiné Libéré newspaper.

Alic was born in Bosnia, but is now a French national. “Especially since my name is actually pronounced ‘Alitch.’ It is of Yugoslav origin. And now here, I am labelled as a risk,” she said.

` John Kerry US May impose Sanctions on Whole Sectors of Russian Economy ‘

#AceWorldNews – NEW YORK – April 29 – The US may impose sanctions on whole sectors of Russian economy, if Russia continues the same policy towards Ukraine. US Secretary of State John Kerry said this in an interview to The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

When asked why the American government continues punishing individual Russians or single Russian companies and does not impose broader sanctions on whole sectors of the Russian economy — the energy, financial or defence sectors — Kerry answered: “We’re inches away from that now. And if they continue on this path, that’s where it’s heading.”

Regarding the developments in Ukraine, the USA has imposed further sanctions against seven Russian officials and 17 companies. In particular, the case in hand is freezing assets, which may be under Washington’s jurisdiction, as well as ban on American visas.

According to John Kerry, the already imposed sanctions have a certain economic and political effect. The Wall Street Journal notes that the best argument is the fact that Russia has not sent its troops to Ukraine’s east.

` Hacker with Activist Group ` Anonymous ' Became Informant for FBI Directing Cyber-Attacks against Foreign Governments '

#AceSecurityNews – WASHINGTON April 26 – (DWN) – A hacker who became an informant for the FBI directed hundreds of cyber attacks against the websites of foreign governments, including Brazil, Iran, Pakistan, Syria and Turkey, the New York Times reported Thursday.

It was unclear whether the FBI explicitly ordered the digital attacks, but court documents and interviews suggest “that the government may have used hackers to gather intelligence overseas,” the Times wrote.

The figure at the centre of the case is Hector Xavier Monsegur, who had become a prominent hacker with the activist group Anonymous, which has staged cyber assaults on MasterCard, PayPal and other commercial and government targets.

Monsegur was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and became an informant, helping the law enforcement agency identify other members of Anonymous.

Monsegur’s location is unknown and his sentencing hearing has been delayed repeatedly, fuelling speculation that he remains an informant for the US government, the Times wrote.

The report reinforces allegations that the US government has exploited flaws in Internet security to spy on foreign targets.

The FBI was not immediately available for comment.

` Al-Qaeda Leader Reportedly Called on all Muslims to Kidnap Westerners and Exchange Them for Militants ‘

#AceNewsServices – April 26 – The leader of al Qaeda has reportedly called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners, particularly Americans, so they can be exchanged for militants being held in jails.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was previously the extremist movement’s number two until the death of Osama bin Laden, said he hoped it would enable the freeing of an Egyptian convicted of attacking New York landmarks.

“I ask Allah the Glorious to help us set free Dr Omar Abdel-Rahman and the rest of the captive Muslims,” Zawahiri said, according to the SITE website monitoring service.

“And I ask Allah to help us capture from among the Americans and the Westerners to enable us to exchange them for our captives.”

Abdel-Rahman, known as The Blind Sheikh, is serving a life term in the US after being convicted in 1995 of conspiring to attack several New York City landmarks, including the United Nations.

Among the offences he was convicted of was seditious conspiracy in the 1993 attack on the World Trade Centre.

Zawahiri’s interview was posted on-line. Reuters said it could not verify the authenticity of the Zawahiri tape, but that the voice resembled that of the al Qaeda leader.
