(ASTORIA, Ore.) USCG REPORT: The Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast (WMEC 623) returned to their Astoria homeport Friday after completing a 10,000-mile, 49-day counter-narcotics patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.27: While the cutter patrolling international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, Steadfast intercepted a vessel suspected of smuggling illicit narcotics:

Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast returns to homeport after 49-day counter-narcotics patrol, $33M worth of cocaine seized: The cutter served as an on-scene law enforcement asset in support of U.S. Southern Command’s Joint Interagency Task Force South and Coast Guard District 11, with primary missions of drug and migrant interdiction, search and rescue, and international relations.

U.S. Coast Guard sent this bulletin at 05/26/2021 01:11 PM EDT

The interdiction resulted in the seizure of over 2,400 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $33 million, and the detainment of three suspected traffickers. Coast Guard cutters operating in the Eastern Pacific push U.S. borders over 1,500 miles offshore which is critical to confronting drug cartels and enhancing national security.

Additionally, Steadfast completed biennial Aviation Standardization Training near the coast of Southern California with a Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter. This training is designed to increase the operational proficiency of the ship and helicopter crews.

“This patrol reinforced the maxim that people, not platforms, are the most important key to operational success,” said Cmdr. Craig Allen, commanding officer of the Steadfast. “Despite encountering some significant equipment and logistics challenges, the Steadfast crew rose to the occasion time and again and achieved remarkable results. We were fortunate to sail with several members filling key positions from other Coast Guard units, including USCGC Waesche, Maritime Safety and Security Teams LA/LB and San Francisco, Sector Field Office Southwest Maine, and Coast Guard Headquarters. All were superb additions to the Steadfast team. Additionally, we had the opportunity to work with a fellow Pacific Northwest 210’ cutter, CGC Active, who helped us out on multiple occasions with time-sensitive logistics support.”

To ensure the safety of Steadfast’s crew during the COVID-19 global pandemic, the crew conducted pre-deployment COVID-19 testing, followed by a 7-day monitoring period. Throughout their patrol, Steadfast’s crew maintained strict health precautions during all interactions with the public, including wearing N95 masks at all times and undergoing intensive health screenings prior to each boarding.

Steadfast is a 53-year-old Reliance Class 210-foot medium endurance cutter that has been homeported in Astoria since 1994. Steadfast’s primary missions include search and rescue, counter-drug, migration interdiction and homeland security operations.

During sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge Karin J. Immergut ordered Gray to pay $60,000 in restitution.

Acting U.S. Attorney Scott Erik Asphaug of the District of Oregon made the announcement.

This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Portland Police Bureau, and the Beaverton Police Department, and was prosecuted by Claire Fay and Quinn Harrington, Assistant U.S. Attorneys for the District of Oregon.

Local police reported that paramedics had hiked out to the patient to provide first aid. They requested a helicopter medevac due to the slippery rocks and dangerous nature of waves crashing around them.

The aircrew launched at 6:15 p.m. and arrived on scene at 6:42 p.m. The aircrew hoisted the patient and a paramedic from the jetty and transported them to emergency medical service technicians waiting at Bowerman Airport in Hoquiam.

“Quick actions taken by Coast Guard Station Grays Harbor, ground crew and Westport Fire and Rescue to stabilize the patient prevented further injury and possible hypothermia,” said Lt. Jake Mullins, MH-60T pilot. “People venturing out onto coastal jetties should exercise extreme caution, to include checking for high-surf advisories and always wearing a life jacket.”

US Dakota: “Farmer Readies His First #GMO Wheat Crop”

#AceNewsServices says over the past 20 plus years the “The Rise and Rise of Monsanto” has made significant advances in the development of herbicide-tolerant wheat, the company announced recently, and could have the first-of-its-kind crop ready for farming in just a few years’ time.

sayno2gmo

sayno2gmo

Genetically-modified wheat is not legally approved anywhere in the world, but the billion-dollar St. Louis, Missouribased agriculture company has for years been determined to develop the first #GMO variety of the cash crop. Now Monsanto’s chief technology officer thinks the company is on the right track with regards to research.

Monsanto’s GMO wheat-in-progress is among 29 endeavours being undertaken by the group to have made “phase advancements” recently, company reps said in a conference call last week, and testing has advanced from the “proof of concept” stage to early development.

monsanto-labeling-300x300Monsanto-made wheat, like other #GMO crops created by the company, would be resistant to their weed killer Round-up and thus join the likes of other “Round-up Ready” products already sold by the company, including bio-engineered soy-bean and corn.

“From an overall market perspective, the grain industry and the wheat industry — specifically the wheat trade industry — has remained very interested and supportive of biotech advances,” Monsanto CTO Robb Fraley said during last week’s call, according to Baking Business reporter Eric Schroeder.

“A wheat farmer generally is also a corn and soy-bean farmer, and they understand the benefits of the technology, and the wheat industry has watched the benefits that this technology has brought to both corn and soy-beans. So we continue to make advances,” added Schroeder.

According to the company’s top technologist, though, GMO wheat would likely not be reality until a couple of years down the road.

“We are still several years away from a product launch, but it is nice to see those products in the pipeline,” Fraley  added.

Indeed, Monsanto has actually spent the better part of a decade-and-a-half researching GMO wheat. The company began field testing a variety starting in 1998, but suspended operations in 2005 after determining that a super-wheat strain was not quite ready to be launched.

As RT  states Monsanto also recently announced that sales of its Round-up Ready soy-bean grew 16 percent during the quarter ending November 30, 2013.

Piper Jaffray Cos analyst Michael Cos told Bloomberg News at the time that Monsanto’s GMO soybean “will prove to be the single most important earnings driver” for the company during the course of the next two years. According to Fraley’s  assessment, though, the company could be nearly completion on its GMO wheat by then.

Should Monsanto stay on track, however, they’ll still have to worry about the restrictions currently in place in the United States and abroad against #GMO wheat. The company became the centre piece of a biotech scandal last year when remnants of old biotech wheat turned up on an Oregon farm practically a decade after Monsanto supposedly stopped testing the crop. After those reports circulated, a government official for Japan’s farm ministry placed an embargo on all US wheat.

Many others countries outside the US have banned #GMO imports, and China recently refused no fewer than five shipments of American corn allegedly over concerns it could have been tainted by a biotech variety of the crop.
