(MINNEAPOLIS) Court Report: Judge has dismissed a third-degree murder charge filed against the former police officer who pressed his knee against George Floyd’s neck, but the more serious second-degree murder charge remains #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.22: Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter Cahill’s ruling was made public Thursday: Derek Chauvin now faces two counts going forward: second-degree murder and manslaughter. Cahill also denied defense requests to dismiss the aiding and abetting counts against three other former officers, Thomas Lane, J. Jueng and Tou Thao:

KTLA https://ift.tt/34mYnoG

Floyd who was in handcuffs, died May 25 after Chauvin pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck as Floyd said he couldn’t breathe and became motionless: All four officers were fired:

Prosecutors argued there was probable cause for the officers to go to trial on all of the charges, saying Chauvin intentionally assaulted Floyd, which is an element of the second-degree murder charge, and that the other officers assisted:

Defense attorneys had argued that there was not enough probable cause to charge the former officers: Chauvin’s attorney said his client had no intent to assault or kill Floyd, while attorneys for the other officers argued that their clients did not intend or conspire to help Chauvin:

(MOSCOW) JUST IN: Edward Snowden has been granted ‘ permanent residency ‘ in Russia his lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told AFP on Thursday that his residency permit was extended and is now indefinite #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.22: Fugitive US whistleblower Edward Snowden has been granted permanent residency in Russia, his lawyer said on Thursday: Snowden, the former US intelligence contractor who revealed in 2013 that the US government was spying on its citizens, has been living in exile in Russia since the revelations:

The 37-year-old has said he would like to return to the United States. His lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told AFP on Thursday that his residency permit was extended and is now indefinite, a situation made possible by recent changes to Russia’s immigration law:

Kucherena said the application was filed in April but the process was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic: Snowden is wanted in the United States on espionage charges after he leaked information showing that agents from the National Security Agency (NSA) were collecting telephone records of millions of US citizens:

When asked whether Snowden planned to apply for Russian citizenship, Kucherena said: “He will make the decision himself.” Kucherena said it was “natural” that Snowden wanted to return to the United States but will only do so when the case against him is closed:

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) Court Report: County judge dismisses extortion counts in sex abuse case against Luz del Mundo church leader on Wednesday citing insufficient evidence where prosecutors says he groomed underage victims for his own sexual pleasure #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.22: Citing insufficient evidence, Judge Stephen A. Marcus on Wednesday ruled to dismiss four counts of extortion against Naason Joaquin Garcia: He argued that the state attorney general’s office had failed to show that Garcia had threatened to disgrace his alleged victims if they didn’t perform sexual acts:

The judge also dismissed enhancements against Garcia for great bodily injury on counts of forcible rape of a minor and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, saying that there lacked evidence that an injury had resulted from the sexual act: But Marcus otherwise denied a motion by Garcia’s defense attorneys at Wednesday’s hearing in downtown L.A. to dismiss before trial the case against Garcia, a man known amongst his followers as the “apostle” of Jesus Christ. Garcia is being held on $90-million bail and has pleaded not guilty to counts that include human trafficking, forcible rape of a minor, and possession of child pornography since his arrest in June 2019.

(BEIJING, China.) #Coronavirus Report: Citizens lineup for experimental #COVID19 vaccine that are costed at 2,000 rmb ($300) for two injections at a private hospital but many are worried about side-effects but is worried about catching the virus overseas on citizen told Time #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Oct.22: Li Shurui didn’t hesitate. Faced with putting his life on hold indefinitely or the risk of catching COVID-19 by returning to university in the U.K., the 22-year-old business student decided to roll up his sleeve and receive an experimental coronavirus vaccine.

Two injections made by Beijing Kexing Biological cost 2,000 rmb ($300) at the private Taihe Hospital in the Chinese capital: The treatment still hasn’t passed final (Stage 3) clinical trials but is already being offered to the public on a first come, first served basis. Anyone can turn up, pay their money and get the jab. Li says hundreds were queuing to get immunized at the same time as him: ” I’m a little worried about side effects but more worried catching the virus overseas,” Li tells TIME. “But I haven’t had any problems from the jabs so far.”

We Will Share Our Vaccine with the World.’ Inside the Chinese Biotech Firm Leading the Fight Against COVID-19

It’s not just the Kexing vaccine on offer in China: An unofficial vaccine rollout is gathering pace despite the warnings of international public health experts. In September, state-owned SinoPharm revealed that hundreds of thousands of Chinese had already taken its experimental COVID-19 vaccines as part of a state initiative to protect frontline health workers and officials traveling to high-risk nations. In the eastern manufacturing hub of Yiwu this week, hundreds of people queued for a $60 dose of the CoronaVac vaccine made by private firm SinoVac.

“ This is insane,” Adam Kamradt-Scott, associate professor specializing in global health security at the University of Sydney, says of China’s gung-ho vaccine rollout. “It is just unsound public health practice. We have previous examples of where vaccines that have not gone through sufficient clinical trials have demonstrated adverse reactions with long-term health consequences.”

As the coronavirus pandemic approaches its 11th month, with over 40 million cases and 1.1 million deaths globally, longing for a miracle cure becomes more desperate. But the consequences of a vaccine misstep could also be dire. In 1976, a rushed campaign to immunize millions of Americans against swine flu subsequently resulted in a small proportion developing chronic fatigue syndrome and helped spark the modern anti-vaxxer movement. Handing out a pre-approval vaccine without sufficient monitoring of efficacy and health of participants risks stoking public misinformation.

What’s more, since COVID-19 cases are so low in China, Stage 3 trials—when the vaccine is given thousands to see how many become infected, compared with volunteers who received a placebo—can only be conducted overseas: There have also not been any “challenge” trials where scientists deliberately expose vaccinated volunteers to the virus to test immunity. (Although controversial, such trials are about to go ahead in the U.K.) ………..The difference in China, however, is that the virus has been largely contained domestically. The country reported only 14 cases on Wednesday, all imported. “It seems there is no need to get a vaccine in China,” says the student Li. “After all, the pandemic has little impact on life in China now; even masks are not mandatory here anymore.”

So why is China so aggressively rolling out vaccines? For the Beijing government, the fight against the pandemic has become a PR battle to drown out international criticism about its early mishandling, coverup and silencing of whistleblowers. Instead, China wants to rebrand itself as a source of vital PPE and, ultimately, a solution the crisis. China’s National Health Authority projected China’s COVID-19 vaccine production capacity will reach 610 million doses annually by the end of 2020. SinoPharm’s boss says his firm alone may be able to produce more than 1 billion doses next year: Inside the Unprecedented Scramble to Immunize the World Against COVID-19

Sinovac has promised to supply 40 million CoronaVac doses to Indonesia by March 2021. São Paulo Governor João Doria said the federal government had also agreed to buy 46 million doses of CoronaVac, one of at least five vaccines undergoing stage 3 trials in the country, which has the world’s third highest infection tally: ” The first results of the clinical study conducted in Brazil prove that among all the vaccines tested in the country, CoronaVac is the safest, the one with the best and most promising rates,” Doria told reporters Monday: My gut reaction is that this is China’s attempt to claim international prestige by being first to rollout a widespread vaccination program,” says Kamradt-Scott, the Australian global health expert. “Unfortunately, I just see politics at play here rather than public health.”

(SEOUL, S.K.) #Coronavirus Report: Korean Medical association urges govt to suspend flu shot program for millions of people after 13 people die after receiving jab #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Oct.22: The Korean Medical Association has called on the country’s government to halt its plan to inoculate millions of citizens after more than a dozen people died after receiving flu shots: The vaccine initiative, billed as a strategy to potentially offset complications from Covid-19, aims to provide free flu jabs to 19 million people. But the ambitious undertaking has come under fire after 13 people died, including a 17-year-old boy and a man in his 70s, after participating in the program: The vaccination drive was suspended for three weeks after it was revealed that around five million doses, which require refrigeration, had been stored at room temperature while being transpired to a medical facility: The program resumed on October 13: None of the people who died received the recalled doses: During a press conference on Thursday, Choi Dae-zip, president of the Korean Medical Association, requested that the flu shot campaign be put on hold until safety concerns about the vaccine could be properly addressed:

Korean health authorities claim that they have found no direct links between the reported deaths and the flu shot:

“The number of deaths has increased, but our team sees low possibility that the deaths resulted from the shots,” Jeong Eun-kyeong, director of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, said while addressing parliament. Health Minister Park Neung-hoo acknowledged that people were “concerned” about the vaccine but said that the program would continue.

A preliminary investigation into six of the deaths found no direct link to the jab they received: Since the program was resumed, 8.3 million Koreans have received flu shots, with about 350 negative reactions to the jab reported, according to health officials.

Vaccine safety has become a hot button issue as governments and pharmaceutical companies rush to develop an effective coronavirus jab. Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency said on Wednesday that a volunteer who was participating in the Oxford University trials of the AstraZeneca vaccine had died of complications from Covid-19. However, the individual may have been part of a control group taking a placebo

(BERLIN, Germany.) LATEST: A knife attack in the city of Dresden a fortnight ago, in which one tourist was killed and a second was seriously injured, is now being treated as a terrorist attack, prosecutors said on Wednesday after a Syrian man was arrested on Tuesday #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.21: Police arrested a 20-year-old Syrian man on Tuesday evening after investigators found evidence linking him to the stabbings. Federal prosecutors in the city of Karlsruhe say he has an Islamist background: The suspect is accused of attacking two tourists in the eastern German city at the start of October, Dresden police said in an update on Wednesday. The victims, aged 53 and 55, were German men from the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia who were on vacation. They were severely injured in the attack, and the older of the pair later died: Police arrest suspected Islamic State terrorist cell plotting attacks on US forces in Germany

(ROME) JUST IN: The Pope has called for same-sex couples to be protected by civil union laws, in a remarkable departure from both the Vatican’s historic stance on homosexuality and his own #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.21: The pontiff’s comments in the film, directed by Russian-born Jew Evgeny Afineevsky, set him notably apart from his predecessors: The previous pope, Benedict, famously compared the need to save humanity from homosexuals to the need to save the rainforest. Even before his papacy, Benedict went as far as claiming that the homosexual “condition” tended towards “an intrinsic moral evil,” in a 1986 letter to Catholic bishops:

“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family,” the head of the Catholic Church says in new documentary ‘Francesco’, which premiered at the Rome Film Festival on Wednesday.

They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it. What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.

By contrast, Pope Francis was named “person of the year” in 2013, the year of his accession, by LGBT magazine Advocate.  Weeks earlier, American magazine Time had also proclaimed Pope Francis its “person of the year,” in an article lauding his “conscious and skillful” approach.

RT World News https://ift.tt/3m9caVU

The front page of the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano shows Pope Francis with his latest encyclical titled

The latest comments from Pope Francis also mark a break from his own previous stance on gay marriage: While he was still archbishop of Buenos Aires, he opposed moves to legalize same-sex marriage in 2010. And in the book ‘On Heaven and Earth’, published in 2013, he said it would be an “an anthropological regression” for same-sex relationships to be equal to heterosexual marriages in law: As recently as 2018, Pope Francis was also expressing concerns over what he termed “fashionable” homosexuality, while saying that he would not welcome gay priests in the Catholic Church:

(CALIFORNIA) JUST IN: Spencer Davis, band leader behind ‘Gimme Some Lovin’’ and ‘I’m a Man,’ dies at 81 his agent said on Tuesday #AceSocialDesk report

Spencer Davis, a British guitarist and bandleader whose eponymous rock group had 1960s hits including “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m a Man,” has died. He was 81: Davis’ agent, Bob Birk, said Tuesday that he died in a hospital while being treated for pneumonia. He didn’t give a location, but British media reported that Davis lived in California:

Born in Swansea, Wales in 1939, Davis began working as a musician while he was a student at the University of Birmingham:

Influenced by the burgeoning British blues and skiffle scenes, he performed in bands with future stars including the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman and Christine Perfect — later Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie. He formed the Spencer Davis Group in 1963, with a teenage Steve Winwood on keyboards and guitar, his brother Muff Winwood on bass and Pete York on drums:

With Steve Winwood as lead vocalist, the band had two No. 1 U.K. singles — “Keep on Running” in 1965 and “Somebody Help Me” in 1966 — and seven British top 40 hits before Steve Winwood’s departure in 1967:

Davis released several solo albums without recapturing his 1960s fame, and later reformed the Spencer Davis Group without the Winwood brothers: In later years he was regarded as an influential elder statesman of British rock:

Davis is survived by his partner June and three adult children.….

(LAGOS, Nigeria.) #EndSARSMovement Report: Before Tuesday, the mood among protesters in Lagos was optimistic, for more than two weeks, protesters across the country have taken to the streets calling for an end to police brutality and the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (or SARS) police unit that mainly targets women #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.21: But after violence on Tuesday night, which rights groups say left 12 people dead, many are afraid. “A lot of us at the forefront are terrified for our lives. We’ve never lived through anything like this in Lagos. We watched people get killed yesterday on social media,” says Jola Ayeye, a 28-year-old screenwriter based in Lagos:

An on-the-ground investigation by Amnesty International confirmed Wednesday that the Nigerian army and police killed at least 12 peaceful protesters in two Lagos suburbs the previous evening, as thousands of people protested against police brutality as part of the #EndSARS movement: Witnesses said several unarmed, peaceful protesters were shot dead at Lekki toll gate in Lagos, Nigeria on Oct. 20, as video footage emerged on social media appearing to show the Nigerian military firing live rounds at a crowd protesting as part of the #endSARS movement. Eyewitnesses at a separate protest site in Alausa told Amnesty International that they were attacked by a team of soldiers and policemen, leaving at least two people dead and one critically injured. At least 56 people have died across the country since the nationwide protests began on Oct. 8, with about 38 killed on Tuesday alone, according to Amnesty International: The Nigerian Army Shot Dead at Least 12 Peaceful Protesters in Lagos, Rights Group Says. Here’s What to Know

The SARS unit has been the target of protests since 2017, but protesters say this latest wave is different than what came before. The movement is leaderless but driven by a younger generation of Nigerians, tired of being profiled by SARS operatives, who often carry out violent ambushes in plain clothes with little impunity. An Amnesty International report earlier this year documented at least 82 cases of torture, ill treatment and extra-judicial execution by SARS between January 2017 and May 2020, mostly targeting young men between the ages of 18 and 35. Although the Nigerian government announced that the SARS unit would be disbanded on Oct. 11, protesters are skeptical that will lead to real change—authorities have made and broken several promises regarding the disbandment and reforms of SARS over the past four years:

Protesters gather at Lagos' Lekki toll gate during a demonstration against police brutality on Oct. 15, 2020.

Nigerian DJ Obianuju Catherine Udeh, better known as DJ Switch, livestreamed on Instagram from Lekki on Tuesday evening and filmed the army shooting rounds of live fire at crowds. “Every Nigerian, especially the diaspora who had no other way to witness this, owe this woman everything,” says London-based Onis Chukwueke-Uba, 25, who was one of more than 150,000 Instagram users watching DJ Switch’s live video as events unfolded in Lagos:

DJ Switch is one of many women on the frontlines of these protests, which began in early October and are among the most widespread wave of perhaps protests in Nigeria campaigning against police brutality. Ayeye, and her podcast co-host Feyikemi Abudu, both based in Lagos, have also become a core part of Nigeria’s protest movement against police brutality, helping spread information on Twitter, raising and distributing funds for protesters and organizing security, medical assistance and legal aid. “This is the first time, at least in my lifetime here, that people are saying ‘enough is enough’,” says 27-year-old Abudu, who currently runs a start-up. She began fundraising a few days after the nationwide protests started on Oct. 8, wanting to provide breakfast for protesters in Lagos: I Really Thought My Life Was Going to End.’ Inside the Protests Taking on Police Brutality in Nigeria

“Young women are having a critical role in sustaining this movement, and young people across Nigeria feel like leaders in their own right,” says Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi, a womens’ rights activist who was on last year’s TIME 100 Next list. Osowobi’s organization, Stand to End Rape, has been providing mental health support for protesters on the front line. As a service-provider helping young women survivors recover from gender-based violence, she knows first-hand the trauma SARS has inflicted on Nigeria’s young people. “Nobody is really safe. I know mothers who have lost their children, I know women who have been raped by these people, I know those who have died, so I have a responsibility too to make sure I fight for the rights of young Nigerians,” she says:

Abudu and Ayeye recall speaking about their frustrations with SARS on their podcast in 2017, during the first wave of campaigns against the unit: They didn’t imagine that three years later, they would be helping organize a support system for protesters, fielding calls in the middle of the night, and directing participants to safety via social media. “We joke that Feyikemi has built a state in ten days,” says Ayeye, referring to volunteers that have come together to organize food, medical assistance and legal aid to support protesters. “The organization and bravery of women really underpins this whole movement,” she says:

Nigeria has a history of women organizing protests. Aisha Yesufu, 46, was a co-organizer of the Bring Back Our Girls movement that called for the safe return of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014. She says she is proud of the young women who have mobilized during this protest movement. “The Bring Back Our Girls movement was a protest of empathy. #endSARS is more about survival. These are young men and women who are being killed by those who are supposed to protect them, and who are fighting for their life,” says Yesufu, whose photo with her fist raised at the forefront of protests in Abuja on Oct. 10 has been shared widely as a symbol of the protests:

Both Abudu and Ayeye, as well as Osowobi, are part of Feminist Coalition, a collective of Nigerian women who formed in July 2020 to work around feminist causes and the advancement of women’s rights in Nigeria: The group has been instrumental in fundraising to support the protesters on the ground through Bitcoin donations, and has issued daily reports of the money they’ve raised and distributed to ensure accountability. As of Oct. 19, the group had raised more than 74 million naira, equivalent to almost $200,000. All three women are hoping that their activities during the protests could improve things for women in the country more broadly, as well greater equality for other marginalized groups, including LGBTQ people who have experienced hostility and homophobia during protests. “It is incredible for me because especially in this country, where a lot of people have these backwards views about women in leadership positions, I’m hoping this will allow people to see that you need women at the top, at every level of society,” Abudu says. “Simply, we are able to get things done.”

All are reeling from the shock of the deaths at Lekki and Alausa on Tuesday night: Yesufu says she is numb, and Ayeye and Abudu say they are afraid for the dead and injured protesters in their city. The Feminist Coalition is now helping support injured protesters, as well as encouraging others to stay safe and stay at home.

There is also fear among protesters that the government will try to change the narrative of events: Witnesses told Amnesty International that shortly before the shootings, CCTV cameras at the Lekki toll gate were removed by government officials and the electricity was cut in an attempt to hide evidence. Abudu and others have been encouraging protesters on social media to document what happened to them to ensure the truth about what happened at Lekki is told. “Something has to give,” Ayeye said via WhatsApp on Wednesday. “We cannot keep living like this.”

(USA) #Coronavirus Report: Surging number of #COVID19 cases seen in hospitals across America as hospitals are starting to feel the strain from records numbers in a number of states: As the number of cases worldwide reach over 40-million and sadly over 1.1-million deaths #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Oct.21: Hospitals across the United States are starting to buckle from a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, with several states setting records for the number of people hospitalized and leaders scrambling to find extra beds and staff:

1./ New highs in cases have been reported in states big and small — from Idaho to Ohio — in recent days.

2./ In Kentucky, the governor called the number of daily confirmed cases “grim,” forcing another round of preparations to expand hospital capacity:

  • Global Confirmed

  • Global Deaths

  • U.S. Confirmed

  • U.S. Deaths

“We are now going back to our plans about capacity in hospitals, looking — if we have to — at hotel options and the use of state parks,” Gov. Andy Beshear said during a recent briefing. “Ensuring that we have the operational plans to stand up the field hospital, if necessary.”…………………..Hotels or state parks could potentially be used to house people who need to quarantine or isolate. The governor reported 776 people hospitalized, including 202 in intensive care and 96 on ventilators. There were 1,312 new COVID-19 cases statewide Tuesday — the fourth-highest one-day total since the pandemic began:

At the other end of the country, Idaho reported its largest coronavirus spike, with new cases increasing by some 47% over the past two weeks: Idaho is currently sixth in the nation for new cases per capita, with a positivity rate of just over 15% — one of the country’s highest:

Still, Gov. Brad Little has resisted calls for a statewide mask mandate or ramped up restrictions, saying it’s up to individuals to take the necessary steps — wearing masks, social distancing and practicing good hygiene — to stem the surge

“As a health system, we’re all very concerned,” said Dr. Bart Hill, the vice president and chief quality officer of St. Luke’s Health System, the state’s largest. “It’s indicative of anticipating we’re going to see more hospitalizations affecting an older population in the next two, three, four weeks.”…………..Still, Hill said health care providers knew the pandemic would ebb and flow over time, and the temporary statewide shutdown Little ordered back in March gave medical facilities time to prepare for the current spikes. St. Luke’s Health System still has adequate capacity for now, he said: Nevertheless, “the direction we’re heading is one that looks real problematic,” he said.

Since the virus was first detected earlier this year, more than 40 million people around the globe have been infected and more than 1.1 million people have died. In the United States, there have been more than 8 million confirmed cases and more than 220,000 deaths. The seven-day rolling average for daily new cases has reached nearly 60,000 — the highest since July:

In some cases, spikes are happening as schools reopen and as Americans grow weary of wearing masks and practicing social distancing:

Coronavirus cases are rising so fast in North Dakota that it’s taking officials up to three days to notify people after they test positive, and as a result the state has also fallen way behind on tracing their close contacts who might have been exposed: Republican Gov. Doug Burgum and the North Dakota Department of Health announced late Tuesday that they’re shifting 50 National Guard members who had been working in contact tracing to simply notifying people who test positive. And public health officials will no longer notify close contacts of people who tested positive; instead those individuals will be instructed to self-notify their close contacts and direct them to the department’s website: North Dakota, with its loose regulations, still has the country’s worst per-capita spread rate, with 1,224 new cases per day per 100,000 residents, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The state’s worsening numbers have prompted sharp questions over how Burgum has handled the virus. Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney has called for a mask mandate statewide.

In Oklahoma, Gov. Kevin Stitt and state health officials launched a new plan to handle a surge in the number of people hospitalized due to the coronavirus: The plan, announced as hospitalizations in the state reached a record one-day high of 821, includes transferring virus patients from facilities in regions where hospitalizations are high to those with more bed capacity:

Meanwhile, Wyoming health officials have reported the number of people hospitalized with the virus has increased to 73, the highest since the pandemic started in March: Health officials say the increase mirrors an increase of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases reported across the state since late September. October has been a record-setting month for cases:

Hospitalizations in Ohio have also hit a new high, with 1,154 people hospitalized and 158 on ventilators — the highest number since July: Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Monday he was caught off-guard by the spike in cases and pleaded again for Ohioans to wear masks and keep themselves socially distanced.

And in Boston, Mayor Marty Walsh said public schools will switch to all-remote learning because of a rising number of cases: The city’s seven-day average positive test rate is currently 5.7%, an increase from 4.5% last week. Walsh said students will remain in remote learning until there are two full weeks of falling infection rates:

(HOUSTON, Tx.) WATCH: NASA’s OSIRIS-REx probe successfully touches down on asteroid Bennu 320 million km away on Tuesday #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.21: NASA’s OSIRIS-REx probe successfully touched down on the ancient asteroid Bennu to collect a sample which will hopefully shed some light on the early universe and, possibly, the origins of life itself:

The OSIRIS-REx – which stands for: Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer – spacecraft briefly touched down on the asteroid located some 200 million miles (321 million kilometers) from Earth on Tuesday: At approximately 1:50 pm EDT, the probe descended 805 meters (2641 feet) from orbit, in a delicate process which took four hours, and extended its 3.35-meter sampling arm and touched the space rock for about 15 seconds: RT World News https://ift.tt/35mdY6S

The craft steered past a two-storey-sized boulder, affectionately nicknamed “Mount Doom” by the NASA team, as it hovered over the sample collection site, known as “Nightingale,” before unleashing a short burst of nitrogen gas to kick up some samples of space dust.

It won’t be clear until later on Wednesday whether OSIRIS-REx was successful in its mission of scooping up a souvenir from the surface of the asteroid. The goal is to collect at least 60 grams (roughly the same size as a full-size candy bar) of this “primordial cargo,” which, at one point, may have helped seed life on Earth and other planets.

Once final checks on the amount of dusty payload that has been brought on board are made, the probe’s journey back to Earth will begin in March 2021. If more samples are needed, it may make another descent in January, but it will take roughly a week to confirm how much material was collected in the first touchdown maneuver.

“This amazing first for NASA demonstrates how an incredible team from across the country came together and persevered through incredible challenges to expand the boundaries of knowledge,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

“Our industry, academic, and international partners have made it possible to hold a piece of the most ancient solar system in our hands.”

The mission launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on September 8, 2016, arriving a little over two years later on Bennu December 3, 2018.

All going well, it will return to Earth with samples which will afford humanity a look at the early universe on September 24, 2023 when it parachutes into Utah’s west desert.

(BEIJING, China.) Economical Report: CCP Declares #COVID19 under control asa economic growth accelerated to 4.9% over a year earlier in last quarter as shaky recovery gains strength analysts say as much as 30% of the urban workforce, or as many as 130 million people, may have lost their jobs at least temporarily #AceFinanceDesk report

#AceFinanceReport – Oct.20: Figures announced Monday for the three months ending in September were in line with expectations after the ruling Communist Party declared the outbreak under control in March and began reopening factories, shops and offices: Factory output rose, boosted by foreign demand for Chinese-made masks and other medical supplies. Retail sales, which had lagged behind the manufacturing rebound, finally returned to pre-virus levels: The economy “continued the steady recovery,” the National Bureau of Statistics said in a report:

However, it warned, “the international environment is still complicated and severe.” It said China still faces “great pressure” to prevent a resurgence of the virus: China, where the pandemic began in December, became the first major economy to return to growth with a 3.2% expansion in the quarter ending in June: Output contracted 6.8% in the first quarter after Beijing shut down the world’s second-largest economy:

Authorities have lifted curbs on travel and business but visitors to government and other public buildings still are checked for the virus’s telltale fever: Travelers arriving from abroad must be quarantined for two weeks:

Last week, more than 10 million people were tested for the virus in the eastern port of Qingdao after 12 cases were found there: That broke a streak of almost two months with no virus transmissions reported within China: Industrial production rose 5.8% over the same quarter last year, the National Bureau of Statistics reported, a marked improvement over the first half’s 1.3% contraction:

Chinese exporters have benefited from the economy’s relatively early reopening and global demand for masks and other medical supplies: They are taking market share from foreign competitors that still are hampered by anti-virus controls: Retail sales returned to positive territory in the latest quarter, rising 0.9% over a year earlier: That was up from a 7.2% contraction in the first two quarters as consumers, already anxious about a slowing economy and a tariff war with Washington, put off buying: In a sign demand is accelerating, sales in September rose 3.3%.

Private sector analysts say as much as 30% of the urban workforce, or as many as 130 million people, may have lost their jobs at least temporarily: They say as many as 25 million jobs might be lost for good this year:

The ruling party promised in May to spend $280 billion on meeting goals including creating 9 million new jobs: But it has avoided joining the United States and Japan in rolling out stimulus packages of $1 trillion or more due to concern about adding to already high Chinese debt:

(STOCKHOLM, Sweden.) JUST IN: An Afghan refugee-turned-famous Swedish expert on education and integration, Hamid Zafar, has had his perfect public image ruined after a local newspaper discovered hateful comments he had been posting online under a pseudonym #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.19: Zafar arrived in Sweden as a refugee child and rose to prominence as a symbol of successful integration. Brought up in what is being described as a “socially vulnerable” district of Gothenburg, the man took charge of a troubled local school and became known throughout Sweden simply as ‘Rector Hamid’ : His career has been on the rise ever since: between working at the Swedish Schools Inspectorate and giving lectures at Karlstad University, the man frequently appeared on Swedish media as a pundit. He was also an independent expert with the integration commission of the center-right Moderate Party: Eventually, he received a prestigious ‘Swede of the Year’ award by the Swedish Focus magazine in 2018, and became the head of the Children and Education Department in the southern municipality of Mullsjo:

RT World News https://ift.tt/3nVUGxX

This week, however, journalists from the Dagens Nyheter (DN) suddenly uncovered the well-respected education expert’s ‘dark side,’ reporting that between 2011 and 2016 Zafar had anonymously been posting hateful comments online: Zafar denounced his opponents as “Zionist dogs” in social media arguments, and criticized the distribution of a book about Holocaust in Swedish schools, arguing it would create “mass psychosis” and stuff students’ heads with an idea of “how terrible Holocaust was.”………In other comments and posts that have since been deleted, Zafar scolded the Swedish Lutheran Church for allowing homosexual marriages, and mocked Hazaras – an Afghan ethnic minority considered one of the most oppressed groups in Afghanistan: The scandal prompted the Mullsjo authorities to immediately fire Zafar from his position as the Children and Education Department head. The municipality rushed to “distance itself from Hamid Zafar’s … views and statements” while calling the whole situation a “crisis of confidence.”

We have come to a conclusion that our confidence in Hamid Zafar has been so much damaged that it is now impossible for him to continue his work

Zafar himself did not dispute DN’s findings and admitted he indeed wrote all those posts. He called them youthful indiscretions, even though he was between 28 and 33 years old at the time, and said the statements were made during a “destructive” period of his life: Zafar claimed that he had “distanced himself from such opinions since then and left them behind.” He did not apologize, though, saying instead that those, who are without sin “are welcome to throw the first stone.”………….Meanwhile, various organizations he cooperated with continue to cut ties with disgraced expert and terminate his contracts. His scheduled TV appearances have been cancelled and he lost his position as a columnist in the Swedish Goeteborgs Posten newspaper. The Moderate Party also advised him to “resign” from its integration commission:
