#AceBreakingNews – POLAND:June.10: Polish parliament speaker, 3 ministers resign over taping scandal

Three Polish ministers and the parliament speaker submitted their resignations in connection with a taping scandal, Poland’s Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz announced on Wednesday. Secret recordings of government ministers’ conversations were leaked this week.

The PM announced that the three ministers who decided to quit their positions are the health, treasury and sports ministers.

Several other politicians, including the Speaker of the Parliament, Radoslaw Sikorski, as well as a chief adviser to the Prime Minister and a special services coordinator, also resigned.

Prime Minister Kopacz also indicated that she would fire Prosecutor General Andrzej Seremet, AP reported. The investigation with the ministers involved was led by Seremet, and Kopacz said it was slow-going.

She also mentioned she did not accept the prosecutor’s report on why the classified files from the probe had been leaked to the public.

POLAND: ‘ Former Army Commander & Ex-Defense Minister prepare for hybrid war scenario with Russia ‘

#AceNewsReport – Featured Interview:POLAND:June.07: Former Polish army commander and ex-Deputy Defense Minister Waldemar Skrzypczak says that Poland and the Baltic states prepare for ‘hybrid war’ with Russia, while adding that NATO’s combined military power comfortably exceeds the forces at Russia’s disposal.

Two Norwegian sailors onboard the Norwegian support vessel Valkyrien

Sitting down for an interview for Baltic news hub Delfi, Skrzypczak defended NATO’s beefing up of its presence in countries along Russia’s border, arguing that “I wouldn’t say that this is an attempt to intimidate Russia, but rather the response by the [NATO] Alliance to a threat which could turn into an uncontrollable situation. What sort of threat? For example, a hybrid war.”

Skrzypczak noted that under the present balance of forces, the expanded Eastern European Rapid Response Force can handle the appearance of Russian ‘little green men’ “with ease.” However, ramping up the paranoia and alluding to a Russian fifth column in the Baltic states, the ex-general added that “the aggressor acts not only with the help of special forces.

His activity can be observed in a variety of fields –from military to political and the ethnic factor.” Skrzypczak did not make clear how this “ethnic factor” should be dealt with, noting only that “it is very important to understand what is happening and to provide a timely warning about the opponent’s [potential] actions.”

Commenting on the growth of NATO military might along Russian borders, including a growing permanent military presence, expanded and intensified exercises, Lithuania’s return to conscription, and Poland’s own intensive rearmament, Skrzypczak noted that NATO governments’ earlier policy was naïve for “blindly believing that good relations with Moscow [would] last forever,” adding that the conflict in Ukraine, for which he blamed Russia, “fell [on European politicians] like a cold shower.” In the general’s view, NATO’s more aggressive posture “is the only way to cool the hotheads in Moscow.”

Boasting that the generals of the Russian army “likely think of a conflict with NATO as a bad dream,” Skrzypczak noted that NATO’s military potential “exceeds at least several times the capabilities at Russia’s disposal,” adding that even on their own, the combined forces of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia would be a “tough nut [for Russia] to crack.” In the ex-general’s view, a war with NATO would “plunge Russia into chaos from which it would be unable to recover,” and for this reason “full-scale hostilities are not a threat.”

Retracting his earlier calls for Polish authorities to support Ukraine politically and militarily, Skrzypczak noted that this would be improper following “the Ukrainian parliament’s decision to recognize [Nazi collaborationist forces] OUN-UPA as fighters for Ukrainian independence.” Skrzypczak noted that “we Poles are against the honoring of the executioners of the Volyn massacre,” but added that “if we leave the Ukrainians alone, everything could end up even worse.”

Blaming Russia for the civil war in eastern Ukraine, caused in no small part by the radical nationalism supported by Kiev, Skrzypczak noted that while Russia is presently “trying to return to the international scene as peacemaker,” he remains hopeful that “the West will remain alert.”

Skrzypczak served as the commander of Poland’s land forces between 2006-2009, serving as the country’s deputy defense minister between 2012-2013.

POLAND: ‘ LAWMAKERS BAN ALL JUNK FOOD IN SCHOOLS TO REDUCE CHILD OBESITY ‘

#AceNewsServices – POLAND – October 27 – Polish lawmakers are literally changing the face of a nation, banning junk food in schools in an effort to reduce the increasing rates of child obesity.

' Poland bans junk food in schools '

‘ Poland bans junk food in schools ‘

Starting next school year, children won’t find chips, soda or burgers anywhere near their schools.

Polish MPs took concrete steps in amending the law on food safety and nutrition on Thursday, with 426 voting in favor in the 460-seat lower house of parliament to impose a ban on junk food.

Introduced by the PSL Polish Peasants’ Party, the ban aims to “prevent obesity and pre-obesity in children and teenagers” a government statement said.

Under the new measures to be administered from the start of the next new school year by the health ministry, only foodstuffs approved in a detailed list can be offered to children on school grounds nationwide.

So Polish youths say goodbye to potato chips, soda, burgers and candy, and say hello to a new beginning of healthy food consumption. Foods not released for sale in the schools will also not be advertised on campus or close to its vicinity. Those in charge of schools, are to hold consultation with the parents who will participate in drawing up a list of foodstuffs authorized for sale and consumption on school premises.

The amendment is scheduled to come into force on 1 September 2015.

The shops located near school premises will have three months to adapt their business to the new rules.

In Poland, some 51 percent of the entire population is overweight, local media reports citing latest UN statistics. Obesity and overweight affects more than 40 percent of women and about 60 percent of men. As many as 29 percent of 11-year-olds are overweight.

The number of obese children has been steadily growing over past decades, which means a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease and hypertension in young people.

“According to the latest research, poor nutrition negatively affects the psyche of children, makes them more aggressive, have more difficulty paying attention and greater problems in science,” Professor Elisabeth Jarocka-Zither of Olsztyn children’s hospital told Radio Olztyn.

POLAND: ‘ REVOKES ACCREDITATION OF RUSSIAN STATE NEWS AGENCY JOURNALIST AFTER RECENT SPYING ALLEGATIONS ‘

#AceWorldNews – WARSAW, October 24. /TASS/. The Polish Foreign Ministry has revoked the accreditation from a Russian state-run news agency’s journalist working in Warsaw, a ministry spokesman said on Friday.

The spokesman refused to elaborate whether the withdrawal of the accreditation of Leonid Sviridov, a correspondent of the Rossiya Segodnya news agency (formerly known as RIA Novosti), was linked to the recent spy scandal in Poland.

On October 15, a high-ranking Polish officer and a lawyer holding Russian-Polish citizenship were detained on charges of spying for a foreign nation.

Marek Biernacki, a member of the parliamentary intelligence committee, said that the detainees were Russia’s agents.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechocinski said last week that Poland could deport Russian diplomats following the scandal.

BRUSSELS: ‘ Gas Supplies for Poland and Slovakia Dip As EU Imposes Sanctions ‘

#AceNewsServices (Exclusive) – BRUSSELS – September 12 – Poland and Slovakia have said gas supplies from Russia are down, as the EU impose’s new sanctions.

Gazprom

A Polish diplomat told EUobserver on Thursday (11 September) that volumes fell by 20 percent on Monday and were down by 45 percent by Thursday.

The same day Slovak PM Robert Fico said supplies to his country had dipped by eight to 11 percent.

Both countries are trying to find out what is going on amid denials by Russian supplier Gazprom that its shipments are any lower than normal.

The Polish diplomat said the enquiries are being made by Polish gas distribution firms. But Fico told press he has tasked officials to contact Moscow.

Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary are involved in shipping “reverse-flow” gas to Ukraine after Russia cut off Ukraine gas in a price dispute.

But a Hungarian diplomat told this website its Russia gas deliveries are normal for now.

We did not see a drop in supplies. But we are filling up our storage tanks so that we are prepared for any scenario that may come”, the source noted.

The Polish diplomat added: “On the Polish side, there is no risk to national consumers at this stage. We have generous reserves. But the supply reductions could be a burden on reverse-flow and I have heard talk that this is being scaled down”.

Gazprom’s reductions come the same week the EU adopted a new round of economic sanctions against Russia following its invasion of east Ukraine.

Some EU states had wanted to wait and see if a ceasefire deal with Russia holds before implementing the new measures.

But EU Council chief Herman Van Rompuy announced on Thursday that they will enter into life the following morning.

The most vulnerable to gas cuts is Finland and according to report by EUobserver

“A Russian gas export embargo during the winter of 2014/15 lasting for more than 6 months would cause supply shortfalls in many European countries, in particular, in central and eastern Europe, including Germany,” according to a study published Wednesday (3 September) by the Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne.

` NATO Defence Ministers Will Meet this Week to Discuss Reinforcing Military Presence in Poland ‘

#AceWorldNews – NATO – June 01 – NATO defence ministers will meet in Brussels this week to discuss temporarily reinforcing their military presence in Poland, Reuters reports.

It has not been decided whether the 28-member Alliance will actually reinforce its Multinational Corps North East in Szczecin, a spokesman for the German Defence Ministry said.

In April, Poland’s defence minister asked for more NATO troops, explaining this by the threat the country feels from neighbouring Russia.

(The Star) – General Breedlove said NATO will also be looking at whether to permanently bolster its military presence in the eastern regions after Russia’s surprise annexation of Crimea and continued aggression against Ukraine that is blamed on Moscow.

“The Russia Federation’s actions and military escalation present serious implications for the security and stability of Eastern Europe,” Breedlove said during a visit to Ottawa.

“I think we need to look at our responsiveness, our readiness and then our positioning of forces to be able to address this new paradigm that we have seen demonstrated in Crimea,” he said.

He said those “tougher questions” would be addressed in advance of a September summit of NATO leaders.

` German Investigators of Nazi War Crimes Identified 20 Former Guards from Majdanek Death Camp Still Alive ‘

#AceWorldNews – BERLIN – May 20 – German investigators of Nazi war crimes say they have identified about 20 former guards from the Majdanek death camp who are still alive and may be guilty of accessory to murder.

Federal prosecutor Kurt Schrimm, told reporters Tuesday his special Nazi war crimes office is preparing to recommend that state prosecutors pursue charges against the suspects in the next two weeks. Schrimm’s office has no power to file charges itself.

Lead investigator Thomas Will told The Associated Press that the suspects — men and women — all live in Germany, but that the probe of other former Majdanek guards is ongoing. About 1,000 possible suspects are being investigated overall.

The Nazis killed tens of thousands of Jews and others in Majdanek, on the outskirts of Lublin in occupied Poland.

` NATO Considering Permanently Stationing Troops in Parts of Eastern Europe ‘

#AceWorldNews – NATO – May 07 – NATO’s top military commander says the alliance must consider permanently stationing troops in parts of Eastern Europe as a result of tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove said on May 6 that the issue will be discussed by NATO commanders, defense ministers, and foreign ministers in the run-up to a summit in Wales in early September.

NATO’s short-term agreements to rotate land, sea, and air forces in places like the Baltics, Romania, and Poland are expiring at the end of 2014.

The alliance has deployed additional forces in the Baltics and Poland in response to Russia’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula and the deployment of tens of thousands of Russian troops on Russia’s border with Ukraine.

NATO officials have said recently that Russia can no longer be viewed as a potential partner but rather must be seen as an adversary.

` Britain is Dispatching Four Typhoon Jets to Patrol Air Space of Baltic States Part of the NATO Pact ‘

#AceWorldNews – LONDON – April 28 – Britain is dispatching four Typhoon fighter jets to patrol the airspace of Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, British media said Monday.

They will perform their patrolling mission alongside with six fighter jets of the Polish Air Force and will serve as a replacement for six F15 jets of the US Air Force.

British Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said the Typhoons would support Poland’s contribution to the operation destined to calm down the apprehensions of easternmost member-states of the North-Atlantic pact.

In February 2012, NATO Council extended the patrolling of the airspace over former Soviet Baltic republics by combat aircraft of the North-Atlantic pact through to 2018. Air Forces of different NATO nations take part in the operation on the basis of rotation.

` US Ground Forces to Poland as part of NATO Expansion Mission – Decision Next Week ‘

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE – NATO – April 19 – Poland’s defence minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, said that an announcement will be made next week regarding sending US ground forces to Poland as part of a NATO expansion mission in eastern Europe, in response to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, The Washington Post reported.

Siemoniak said the decision has been made on a political level and that military planners are working out details. There will also be intensified cooperation in air defence, special forces, cyber-defence and other areas. Poland will play a leading regional role, “under U.S. patronage,” he said.

But the defence minister also said that any immediate NATO response to Russian aggression in Ukraine, while important, matter less than a long-term shift in the defence postures of Europe and America.

The United States, having announced a “pivot” to Asia, needs to “re-pivot” to Europe, he said, and European countries that have cut back on defence spending need to reverse the trends.
