Iraq executes 26 men convicted of ‘terrorism’ in Al-Qaeda offensive

Iraq forces announced the execution of 26 men on Tuesday as part of a sharp crackdown on “terrorism” in the midst of a spike in violence. Ten people were killed in violence across the country on Tuesday, bringing the January total to 700. Last year marked the country’s bloodiest year since 2007.

One killed in Purdue University shooting, suspect in custody

A shooting at Purdue University has left one person dead. The shooter was taken into custody. The Electrical Engineering Building remains on lockdown, though police believe the shooter targeted only the victim. The male shooter entered the building, shot one person in a basement classroom area then left the scene, police said in a press conference. Police believe the shooter acted alone. The shooting occurred around noon, and the campus-wide lockdown was partially lifted after two hours.

Presidents Putin, Obama discuss Geneva 2 peace talks in a phone call

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart have discussed the agenda of the Geneva 2 peace talks in the Swiss resort city of Montreux opening on January 22. The phone call was initiated by the US side, the Itar-Tass news agency reported, citing Russia’s presidential press-office. The two Presidents also touched upon a wide range of issues, including bilateral relations and the implementations of the Iran nuclear agreement reached in November 2013.
