(NORWAY) LATEST: A diplomatic row has broken out between Norway and World Cup hosts Qatar after two journalists were arrested in the Middle Eastern country #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.25: Reporting on the conditions for migrant workers constructing stadiums for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Ekeland spoke of “stark contrasts”, and how some laborers were “doing awfully”

#AceDailyNews says according to RT News Report: World Cup host Qatar arrests Norwegian journalists: NRK sports reporter Halvor Ekeland and NRK cameraman Lokman Ghorbani were apprehended on Sunday while preparing to head to Doha Airport PUBLISHED: 24 Nov, 2021 16:01

World Cup host Qatar arrests Norwegian journalists

Just hours earlier, they had completed a live piece for the Sportsrevyen show back home.

“The encounters we had with workers, those who did not wish to speak with journalists on camera. When I asked them for an interview, you see the fear in their eyes,” he answered, when asked what had shocked him the most during his time in Qatar from November 14.

Norwegian journalists Halvor Ekeland and Lokman Ghorbani were arrested in #Qatar, after reporting on preparations for the 2022 World Cup last Sunday, but they have now finally been released – and are already heading back to #Norway#Qatar2022pic.twitter.com/ip0qxWRf15— 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢 ☀️ (@MArizanti) November 23, 2021

A spokesperson for the Qatari government said that the men were taken into custody in the early hours of November 22 “for trespassing on private property and filming without a permit”.

“The authorities arrested the crew in their hotel after responding to a complaint made by the owner of the private property on which the crew had illegally accessed.

“The crew were released without charge early on 23 November after completing the necessary legal procedures. The Norwegian embassy and NRK executives were updated on the situation as it progressed,” it finished.

Recalling how they were arrested at their accommodation and taken to a nearby police station, Ekeland said that he and his colleague were questioned but “first and foremost” happy “to be back in Europe” when landing in Oslo.

#Norwegian Broadcasting (#NRK) journalists Ekeland and Ghorbani are finally in #Norway. They were arrested on a business trip in the World Cup host country #Qatar.“We’re fine. These have been tiring days. The situation was uncertain, but it is very good to be home in Norway now,” pic.twitter.com/G66rqZfyJt— Northern Europe (@europe_northern) November 24, 2021

“We’ve had a hard time. We will have a number of meetings with NRK and find out a number of things, then comment more,” he added.

According to its managing director Thor Gjermund, NRK wasn’t informed of the reasons for their employees’ detention which he has taken as an attack on free speech and freedom of the press.

“It is unacceptable for the media to be prevented from practicing free and independent journalism at one of the world’s largest sport events,” he said via a statement.

“We will be discussing how this should be handled with FIFA,” Eriksen vowed.

Ekeland and Ghorbani were reportedly due to interview Abdullah Ibhais, who was until recently the World Cup’s communications director.

After being publicly critical of the Qatari leadership, however, Ibhais was arrested and is now appealing against a five-year corruption prison term.

The arrest of the NRK staff members has been tipped as threatening to become a diplomatic incident, with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store wading into the row.

On Twitter, the leader said that it was “unacceptable”.

“A free press is crucial in a functioning democracy,” he continued.

“This also shows the importance of this year’s awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize. I am very happy that Halvor Ekeland and Lokman Ghorbani have now been released,” Store concluded.

(KABUL) LATEST: Domestic flights have resumed in Afghanistan between the capital and three major provincial cities, after a technical team from Qatar reopened the capital’s airport for aid and domestic services #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsREport – Sept.06: Flights between Kabul and the western city of Herat, Mazar-i Sharif in northern Afghanistan and Kandahar in the south started on Saturday, the Ariana Afghan airline said in a statement on its Facebook page.

#AceDailyNews says that Kabul airport reopens for aid and domestic flights, but the US says it won’t help the #Taliban according to Reuters …

Kabul Airport

“Ariana Afghan Airlines is proud to resume its domestic flights,” it said.

Earlier, Qatar’s ambassador to Afghanistan said a technical team was able to reopen Kabul airport to receive aid, according to Qatar’s Al Jazeera news channel.

The airport’s runway has been repaired in cooperation with authorities in Afghanistan, the ambassador said, according to Al Jazeera, in a further small step towards a return to relative normality after the turmoil of the past three weeks.

Reopening the airport, a vital lifeline with both the outside world and across Afghanistan’s mountainous territory has been a high priority for the Taliban as they seek to restore order after their lightning seizure of Kabul three weeks ago.

A US soldier holds a sign indicating a gate is closed as hundreds of people gather some holding documents.

Kabul airport had been closed since the end of the massive US-led airlift of its citizens, other Western nationals and Afghans who helped Western countries.

Most of the international community is yet to announce whether they will accept the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, and as a result, finance and access to the country’s assets has been paused.

In the US, aides Democrats who control both houses of Congress and to Republicans said lawmakers were nearly certain to provide humanitarian aid for internally displaced Afghans and refugees but not to the government itself, at least for now.

“It would be difficult to convince members of Congress to do anything that would appear to be supporting the Taliban government,” said a senior Senate Democratic aide, citing the absence of oversight and a reluctance “to support a government that is anathema to us.”

A senior Senate Republican aide agreed.

“Republicans would absolutely not support giving money to the Taliban,” the Republican aide said, saying they do not want to provide any money until Americans and Afghans who worked with the United States can leave Afghanistan.

The State Department did not immediately reply to a request for comment on whether it would request additional funds for Afghanistan.

#FIFA ‘ Refutes reports of stripping Russia as Hosts of 2018 World Cup in Favour of Qatar ‘

#AceNewsReport – #BreakingUpdate:#FIFA on Thursday refuted media reports that the world football organization considered stripping Russia of the right to host the 2018 World Cup over the Ukraine crisis, a source in the #FIFA press service said.

The Spanish sports daily As, on Wednesday, reported that FIFA had asked Qatar to speed up its preparations for the 2022 World Cup, so that the country could be ready to host the competition in 2018 instead of Russia, should the situation in Ukraine worsen. It was not specified when the offer was made.

“This information is absolutely wrong,” the source told R-Sport on Thursday.

The West has imposed restrictive measures against Russia as it accuses Moscow of fueling the internal conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin denies the allegations.

The news comes amid the FIFA corruption scandal. In late May, several high-ranking FIFA officials were arrested on a US federal corruption warrant. Swiss authorities launched a separate probe into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. @AceNewsServices

‘ ISIS HAVE GOT THEIR HANDS ON CHINESE MADE SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILES RECENT VIDEOS SHOW’

#AceWorldNews – October 31 – An advanced surface-to-air missile thought to have been supplied to Syrian rebels by Qatar against American wishes has been filmed in the hands of ISIS jihadists.

A militant was shown firing a Chinese-made FN6 shoulder-mounted missile, with a later image suggesting it had brought down an Iraqi army helicopter.

The attack was said to have happened during the battle for Baiji, a town that houses Iraq’s biggest oil refinery.

The FN6, a modern weapon that is still being made, is more powerful than the older, Russian-made missiles previously seen in the hands of rebels and the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS).

EGYPT: ‘ US Secretary John Kerry Arrives in Cairo to Gird Support Against Islamic State ‘

#AceNewsServices – (Exclusive) – EGYPT (Cairo) – September 13 – US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Cairo on the latest leg of a regional tour to forge a coalition to battle the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

ISIL

ISIL

Kerry is scheduled to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi.

The United States says it is “comfortable” it can build an international coalition to fight the armed group, but with Western and Middle Eastern allies hesitant on the specifics, it risks finding itself out on a limb.

The Rebels Path Through Iraq - Screenshot from 2014-09-13 13:24:04

President Barack Obama this week unveiled a rough

plan to combat Islamic State group fighters simultaneously in Iraq and Syria, thrusting the US directly into two different wars in which nearly every country in the region has a stake.

The broad concept of a coalition has been accepted in Western capitals and on Thursday 10 Arab states, including regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Qatar, signed up to a “co-ordinated military campaign”.

“I’m comfortable that this will be a broad-based coalition with Arab nations, European nations, the United States, others,” Kerry said in the Turkish capital Ankara on Friday.

But he added it was “premature” to set out what tasks individual coalition partners would shoulder.

Iran ruled Out:

US officials have said the coalition will be broad. However, when asked on Friday, Kerry ruled out Iranian involvement as inappropriate due to its support for the regime of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad.

He said there were “any number of reasons” why Iran should not join a Paris conference on Monday to discuss coalition strategy.

Iran has never offered to join the coalition against Islamic State in Syria, describing it as “shrouded in serious ambiguities”. It has sent soldiers to Iraq at the request of the Iraqi government to combat Islamic State fighters there.

“No one has called me and asked me with respect to the presence of Iran, but I think under the circumstances, at this moment in time, it would not be right for any number of reasons. It would not be appropriate, given the many other issues that are on the table with respect to their engagement in Syria and elsewhere,” Kerry said.

The US on Friday said that it was at war with Islamic State, a day after Obama’s statement that strikes against the group were to extend into Syria.

The comments by Pentagon and White House officials on Friday came as the US president was pressed to clear up doubts about how he saw the conflict with the group, also known as ISIL.

“The United States is at war with ISIL in the same way that we are at war with al-Qaeda,” Josh Earnest, a spokesman for the White House, said.

‘ Doha Will Host Meeting Between Mahmoud Abbas and Ban Ki-Moon Over Gaza ‘

#AceBreakingNews – DOHA – July 20 – Doha has announced it will host a meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday, which will look to try and push for an end to fighting in the Gaza strip, according to a senior source from the country reported RT.

The session is due to take place in Doha and will be chaired by the Gulf state’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, who has been acting as a “channel of communication” between the Islamist Hamas group and the international community, said the source.

“Qatar has presented Hamas’ demands to the international community. The list has been presented to France and to the UN. The talks tomorrow will be to further negotiate these conditions.”

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has rejected Egyptian efforts to end the fighting, saying any deal must include an end to a blockade of the coastal area and a recommittment to a ceasefire reached in an eight-day war there in 2012.

The conditions include the release of prisoners re-arrested since a 2011 exchange deal with Israel, the opening of Gaza-Israel border crossings and an end to an Israeli blockade on the Gaza seaport, a Hamas source in Doha said.

“In general, Israel must end all forms of aggression and attacks, end the blockade of Gaza and remove the actions that resulted from its military offensive in the West Bank after June 12,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters in the Palestinian Territories.

Egypt said on Saturday it had no plans to revise its ceasefire proposal, which Hamas has already rejected. And the Hamas source in Doha said the group has no plans to change its conditions for a ceasefire.

“We want the rights of our people. Palestinians on the ground are supporting us and we will get them back their rights,” said the source.

` Five Taliban Detainees Exchanged for US Army Sergeant Will Spend a Year in Qatar ‘

#AceWorldNews – UNITED STATES – June 01 – Five Taliban detainees released in exchange for a US Army sergeant will spend a year in Qatar, AFP reports. US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel earlier credited Qatar and its emir with securing the sergeant’s release, who had been held in Taliban captivity for 5 years.

The five detainees transferred from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba had reportedly been officials in the Taliban regime driven out by the US-led invasion of Afghanistan and they remained influential, a Taliban source told AFP.

Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar called the prisoner swap a “big victory.”

` US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel Says Nuclear Talks Between Iran +6 Powers Will Not Undermine Security in Persian Gulf ‘

#AceWorldNews – TEHRAN – May 15 – US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel says nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers will not undermine the security of the Persian Gulf region.

Hagel made the remarks on Wednesday in an opening speech to a conference with his Persian Gulf counterparts in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

He said Washington is hopeful of progress in the negotiations currently under-way in the Austrian capital Vienna between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States — plus Germany.

“As negotiations progress, I want to assure you of two things,” the Pentagon chief told the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council – Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Bahrain.

“First, these negotiations will under no circumstances trade away regional security for concessions on Iran’s nuclear program.”

` Al Jazeera Serves Egypt with a $150 Million Compensation Claim for Damage to its Media Business '

#AceWorldNews – LONDON – April 28 – The Qatar-based satellite network Al Jazeera served Egypt with a $150 million compensation claim on Monday for what it said was damage to its media business inflicted by Cairo’s military rulers, a step likely to worsen Qatari-Egyptian relations.

In a move aimed at drawing attention to what Al Jazeera calls Egypt’s unacceptable treatment of it and its journalists, a lawyer acting for the pan-Arab channel told Reuters he had handed a legal document detailing the claim to a representative of the Egyptian government.

Egypt had begun a “sustained campaign” against Al Jazeera and its journalists after the army toppled Islamist President Mohamed Mursi in July last year, said Cameron Doley, a lawyer at London law firm Carter-Ruck, which is handling the case.

“Al Jazeera invested substantial sums in Egypt,” said Doley. “The effect of this recent campaign by the military government is that this investment has been expropriated. Egypt is bound by international law to pay Al Jazeera just and effective compensation.”

Cairo had six months to settle the claim, filed in the context of a bilateral investment treaty, he said, or face an international tribunal. There was no immediate comment from the Egyptian authorities.

` White House Cancels Plans to Attend Meting Between `Obama and the Persian Gulf Monarch’s in Saudi Arabia ‘

#AceWorldNews – The White House has cancelled plans for a meeting later this month between US President Barack Obama and Persian Gulf monarchs in Saudi Arabia based on tensions among US allies in the region, sources told The Wall Street Journal.

The summit was to include leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, which includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait.

Diplomats informed of the decision to scuttle the meeting said the cancellation symbolizes the tumultuous political climate in the Middle East.

The US has worked with the GCC on security and economic issues in recent years, but the main points of contention include Syria’s civil war and Iran’s nuclear operations.

In addition, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain withdrew ambassadors from Qatar this month based on its support for the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group.

` Three of the ` Gulf Co-Operation Council ‘ States are not happy with ` Qatar’s ‘ support of the `Muslim Brotherhood ‘

#AceWorldNews “As long as Doha does not revise its policy,” there’s no end in sight for the political crisis in Qatar, said Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, cited by the Saudi Al-Hayat Newspaper on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

The statement follows the March 5 return by their governments of Emirati, Bahraini and Saudi ambassadors from Qatar, a move spurred by the Gulf state’s alleged refusal to abide by the agreement that the Gulf Cooperation Council would not interfere in each other’s internal affairs.

The three other GCC states are not happy with Qatar’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood, a party whose ideology is a challenge to the conservative principles of the Gulf region’s established monarchies.

` Gaza Strip’s Sole Power Plant Resumes Operation’s After Sanction’s have been Lifted ‘

#AceWorldNews The Gaza Strip’s sole power plant resumed operations on Monday following a two-day pause, Palestinian officials said.

The shut-down was due to a lack of fuel, following Israeli government’s decision to close all borders with Gaza and suspend the delivery of all commercial goods to the region. Israel eventually allowed in 110,000 litres of fuel for the plant on Sunday and 500,000 litres more on Monday, authority coordinator of supplies into Gaza Strip told Reuters.

The fuel is paid for by Qatar. The plant is a major source of electricity for Gaza’s 1.8 million people, living under an Egyptian-Israeli blockade.

` Interpol will allow `Two Airlines access of its ` Mass Database of ` Lost and Stolen Travel Documents ' in a Pilot Scheme '

#AceWorldNews Interpol will allow two airlines to access its mass database of lost and stolen travel documents in a pilot project to snag criminals or potential terrorists attempting to travel with fake, illicitly-obtained documents.

“I have announced today that Qatar Airways and Air Arabia are two airlines that have committed themselves to making sure that all passengers boarding their planes will have their passport data screened against Interpol’s database,” Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble told reporters at the organization’s headquarters, AP reports.

Under the pilot program, the two airlines will not have direct access to the database, but will rather be able to enter searches via program called I-Checkit for private sector companies.

Apart from eventually expanding to include other airlines, financial institutions and hotels could one day be given access to I-Checkit as well.

Air Arabia and Qatar were chosen to take part in the project because they themselves approached Interpol and expressed an interest in participating, said Michael O’Connell, director of Interpol’s operational police support directorate.
