(QUETTA) JUST IN: A powerful bomb exploded in the parking area of a luxury hotel in the south-western Pakistani city capital of the province of Balochistan, late on Wednesday night (local time), killing at least four people and wounding at least 11 others, police said #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.22: The Chinese ambassador Nong Rong was staying at the hotel but wasn’t there when the bomb went off:

‘Pakistan bombing narrowly misses Chinese ambassador: Pakistan’s Interior Minister told local TV channel ARY News this was a big blast and the Chinese ambassador was also staying at this hotel, but he wasn’t there at the time; he was out at a function’

Posted 10h ago

Key points:

  • China’s ambassador to Pakistan had been staying at the hotel, but it’s not clear if he was the target
  • The Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility hours afterward, but authorities are still investigating who is behind it
  • Balochistan is home to Gwadar Port, considered the flagship project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor under the Belt and Road Initiative
A car park is shown aflame, and police and a soldier are seen at the blast site.

Mr Rong had earlier in the day met provincial Chief Minister Jam Kamal in the city, according to a tweet from the provincial government spokesman.

Provincial Home Minister Ziaullah Lango told reporters he’d spoken with Mr Rong since the explosion.

“I just met him. He is in high spirits,” adding the envoy would complete his visit to Quetta on Thursday.

The province of Balochistan, of which Quetta is the capital, hosts the newly expanded Gwadar deepwater port that is key to a planned $65 billion investment in China’s Belt and Road Initiative economic corridor.

It was not clear whether the envoy or members of his delegation were a target of the attack, but Chinese nationals and their interests in the region have been attacked before by Taliban militants and nationalist insurgents.

Hours after the attack, the Pakistani Taliban in a statement claimed responsibility, saying it was a suicide attack.

The Pakistani Taliban is a separate insurgent group from the Afghan Taliban.

Authorities are investigating to determine whether it was a suicide attack.

It was unclear who was behind the attack since no-one immediately claimed responsibility.

South-western Balochistan province is the scene of a long-running insurgency by secessionist groups like the Balochistan Liberation Front and the Balochistan Liberation Army.

They have for decades staged attacks to press their demands for independence. The Pakistani Taliban and Islamic State group also have a presence there.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mr Ahmed quickly blamed neighbouring India for the hotel bombing, although he provided no evidence to back up the allegation.

He told a Pakistani Geo news channel that Pakistan had only one enemy and it was neighbouring India, which he alleged was behind the bombing.

The hotel is frequented by foreigners as it is the city’s only luxury hotel and is considered safe.

` Marking Press Freedom Day as Journalists Marched the Roads of Quetta to Mourn Killings of Colleagues ‘

#AceNewsServices – QUETTA – May 02 – To mark the World Press Freedom Day, journalists marched on the roads of Quetta to mourn the killings of colleagues and voice for freedom of speech and expression on Saturday.

The members of Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) staged a protest rally outside the Quetta Press Club to mark the International Press Freedom Day.

The journalists were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans demanding the arrest of journalists’ killers and compensation to the affected families.

The BUJ demanded functioning of the judicial commission already formed by Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch to probe the killings of journalists in Balochistan, Pakistan’s volatile and least developed province.

“We want the commission to probe the murder of our colleagues,” Shehzada Zulfiqar, a senior official of the BUJ told Dawn.com.

More than 30 journalists have been killed in Quetta and other troubled parts of Balochistan during last more than seven years.

“The murderers are still at large, despite our repeated appeals,” Zulfiqar said.

The protesters chanted full-throated slogans for freedom of expression and speech and demanded an end to impunity in the province, plagued by violent attacks by militants.

The rally turned into a protest demonstration outside Quetta Press Club where senior journalists addressed the protesting media men. They lashed out at law enforcers for their inability to bring the perpetrators of journalists’ killings to book.

“We stand for freedom of expression, despite all odds,” Khaliq Baloch, the Secretary General of QPC said.

Apart from working journalists, a large number of hawkers also participated in the rally to mark the International Press Freedom Day.

The journalists demanded protection and expressed concerned voice over increasing polarisation in the media.

“We will not bow down our heads before any pressure,” Khudai Noor Nasar, a young journalist who works for Radio Mashaal told Dawn.com.

Nasar urged upon the journalists to bury their hatchet and struggle for common cause of freedom of expression and speech.

Balochistan is considered to be the most dangerous province in Pakistan for journalists.

With New York size population of 8 million people, more than 30 journalists have lost their lives in their struggle to inform, educate the people about the unfolding stories in Pakistan’s geographically largest province.

` Secret Agencies `Alert Police ‘ that `Militants Opposed ‘ to `Tehrik-i-Taliban Peace Talks’ are `Planning ‘ Terrorist Attacks ‘

#AceNewsServices – ISLAMABAD – April 09 – (DAWN) – Secret agencies have alerted the police that militants opposed to the government-Tehrik-i-Taliban peace talks are planning terrorist activities in Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta, according to police and interior ministry officials.

They did not know when the malignant elements would strike, but the officials confided to Dawn that a new group, Ansarul Hind, would claim responsibility for the attacks.

Their intelligence sources, who raised the alert on April 3, said the TTP leadership had wished its informal affiliates to create the so far unheard of group.

Despite the possibility that the TTP sympathisers may be trying to pressurise the government by raising the threat of terrorist attacks in the three cities, the authorities took the threat seriously, police sources said.

“Although peace talks are in progress, we are taking necessary measures to counter terrorism in the cities,” said one official.

“Law enforcing agencies will be the main target of the terrorists, and in the case of their failure, any other official installation or public place.”

“TTP will choose the targets and the informal groups under its umbrella will provide support to the Ansarul Hind activists with weapons and other materials,” he added.

Security sources say the scenario looks similar to the terrorist attacks that quickly followed the announcement of a month-long ceasefire by the TTP last month. The most audacious of them was the bomb-and-gun attack on the district courts complex in Islamabad on March 3, which was claimed by Ahararul Hind group.

That group was heard of for the first time on February 9 when it sent emails to media outlets that it shared the ideology of the TTP but opposed it negotiating peace with the Pakistan government.

Its ownership of the March 3 attack gave rise to speculation that the Ahrarul Hind was affiliated with the Al Qaeda.
