` China Marks 25 Years Since Tiananmen Square Massacre ‘

#AceNewsServicesBEIJING – June 04 – China is marking 25 years since the suppression of pro-democracy protests on Wednesday under a cloak of security, Reuters reported.

Soldiers, police and security personnel enveloped Tiananmen Square, which was closed to foreign media.

The 1989 ‘counter-revolutionary’ demonstrations on Tiananmen Square, which spread to other cities, have never been publicly marked in mainland China.

Every year, there are commemorations in Hong Kong and in self-ruled Taiwan.

Several governments including the United States urged China to account for what happened on June 4, 1989, comments that riled China, which has said the protest movement was “counter-revolutionary”. Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama used the anniversary to call on China to embrace democracy.

China has never released a death toll for the crackdown, but estimates from human rights groups and witnesses range from several hundred to several thousand.

Troops shot their way into central Beijing after demonstrators had clogged Tiananmen Square in Beijing for about six weeks.

There were also protests in many other cities.

Taking no chances on Wednesday, police, soldiers and plain-clothes security personnel enveloped Tiananmen Square, checking identity cards and rummaging through bags looking for any hint that people might try to sneak onto the square to commemorate the day.

Police escorted a Reuters reporter off the square, which was thronged with tourists, saying it was closed to foreign media. Police also detained another Reuters journalist for trying to report on the anniversary in one of Beijing’s university districts, releasing him after a few hours.

Public discussion of the crackdown is off-limits in China. Many young people are unaware of what happened because of years of government efforts to banish memories of the People’s Liberation Army shooting its own citizens.

“They have covered up history. They don’t want people to know the truth of what they did,” veteran activist Hu Jia told Reuters from his home in Beijing, where he said police were present to prevent him from leaving.

“Nobody would have confidence in them if they knew what they did… They should have fallen because of what they did,” he added, speaking by mobile telephone.

` Anti-China-Protesters Set Dozens of Factories on Fire ‘

#AceWorldNews – HANOI – May 14  –  Anti-China protesters set more than a dozen factories on fire in Vietnam, state media said Wednesday, in an escalating backlash against Beijing’s deployment of an oil rig in contested waters.

The South China Seas Trade Route

Workers looted goods and attacked offices in a rare outburst of public unrest Tuesday in the authoritarian communist nation, which allowed mass anti-China rallies around Vietnam at the weekend.

The protesters targeted manufacturing companies that are owned or managed by Chinese as well as Chinese workers in Binh Duong province, the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park said in a statement.

There were no reports of casualties.

Tens of thousands of workers poured onto the streets Tuesday and a small number of them began looting and attacking security guards and factory management before setting fire to at least 15 factories, the state-run VNExpress website reported.

` Ehud Olmert Sentenced to Six Years for Accepting Bribes Linked to Real Estate ‘

#AceNewsServices – JERUSALEM – May 13 – Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment on Tuesday for accepting bribes linked to a real-estate deal, Reuters reported.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert waits to hear his verdict at the Tel Aviv District Court

Olmert had denied wrongdoing in the Holyland apartment complex deal, which took place while he was in his previous post of Jerusalem mayor.

The politician is credited internationally with working towards a peace settlement with the Palestinians.

This is the first time a former head of government in Israel has been sentenced to prison.

(NYPost) – July 10 2012 – Reported an Israeli court cleared former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Tuesday of the central charges in a multi-case corruption trial that forced him from power, but convicted him of a lesser charge of breach of trust.

The verdict was seen as a major victory for Olmert, who stepped down as prime minister in 2009 to battle allegations that included accepting cash-stuffed envelopes from a supporter and pocketing the proceeds from a double-billing scam on overseas travel.

His conviction on the lesser charge of “breach of trust” made him the first Israeli prime minister ever convicted of a crime.

Beating the main charges could significantly rehabilitate Olmert’s public standing and shift the focus to questions on whether an overzealous prosecution unnecessarily hounded him from office.

Olmert’s legal troubles are far from over, however.

He will be sentenced in September and is currently standing trial in a separate real estate bribery case.

For now at least, a return to politics for the 66-year-old Olmert appears unlikely.

Casually dressed in a blue button-down shirt, Olmert appeared calm and relieved as the verdict was delivered in the Jerusalem district court.

As he left the courtroom, the former prime minister had a wide smile and kissed defence lawyers and advisers.

“There was no corruption. There was no taking of money. There was no use of money. There were no cash envelopes. There was nothing of what they tried to attribute to me,” Olmert told reporters defiantly afterward, saying the lone conviction was merely a “procedural lapse” from which he would draw the necessary lessons.

The verdict, which capped a two-year trial, covered three separate allegations: illegally accepting funds from an American supporter, double-billing Jewish groups for trips abroad and channelling state grants to companies linked to a close friend.

He was acquitted in the first two cases and found guilty in the last.

` United States Deploys Manned Drones to Search for Missing Schoolgirls ‘

#AceWorldNews – WASHINGTON  – May 13  –  The United States has deployed manned surveillance aircraft over Nigeria and is sharing satellite imagery with the Nigerian government to find more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Islamist insurgents, a senior Obama administration official said on Monday.

Washington has sent military, law-enforcement and development experts to Nigeria to help search for the missing girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram militants from a secondary school in Chibok in remote north-eastern Nigeria on April 14.

“We have shared commercial satellite imagery with the Nigerians and are flying manned ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) assets over Nigeria with the government’s permission,” the U.S. official said.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a news briefing on Monday that the U.S. was providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support. She said U.S. teams on the ground “are digging in on the search and coordinating closely with the Nigerian government as well as international partners and allies.”

Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the United States was also considering deploying unmanned, drone aircraft to aid the search.

One of the U.S. officials told Reuters the United States had carried out the manned surveillance flights “for a few days” but did not elaborate.

Last week, U.S. Under-Secretary for Africa Linda Thomas-Greenfield told Reuters in an interview that Nigeria had requested surveillance and intelligence from the United States.

` Case of Collateral Murder is Still Waiting For the Culprits to Be Charged ‘

#AceNewsServices – UNITED STATES – Update: On July 6, 2010, Private Bradley Manning, a 22-year-old intelligence analyst with the United States Army in Baghdad, was charged with disclosing this video (after allegedly speaking to an unfaithful journalist). The whistle-blower behind the Pentagon Papers, Daniel Ellsberg, has called Mr. Manning a ‘hero’. He is currently imprisoned in Kuwait. The Apache crew and those behind the cover up depicted in the video have yet to be charged.

On the 5th April 2010 10:44 EST WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad — including two Reuters news staff.

Reuters has tried to  obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack.

The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-sight, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers.

Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.

Wikileaks has obtained and decrypted this previously unreleased video footage from a US Apache helicopter in 2007.

The military did not reveal how the Reuters staff were killed, and stated that they did not know how the children were injured.

After demands by Reuters, the incident was investigated and the U.S. military concluded that the actions of the soldiers were in accordance with the law of armed conflict and its own “Rules of Engagement”.

Consequently, WikiLeaks has released the classified Rules of Engagement for 2006, 2007 and 2008, revealing these rules before, during, and after the killings.

WikiLeaks has released both the original 38  minutes video and a shorter version with an initial analysis. Subtitles have been added to both versions from the radio  transmissions.

WikiLeaks obtained this video as well as supporting documents from a number of military whistleblowers. WikiLeaks goes to great lengths to verify the authenticity of the information it receives. We have analyzed the information about this incident from a variety of source material.

We have spoken to witnesses and journalists directly involved in  the incident.

WikiLeaks wants to ensure that all the leaked information it receives gets the attention it deserves. In this particular case, some  of the people killed were journalists that were simply doing their jobs: putting their lives at risk in order to report on war.

Iraq is a very dangerous place for journalists: from 2003- 2009, 139 journalists were killed while doing their work.

It shows Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen, driver Saeed Chmagh, and several others as the Apache  shoots and kills them in a public square in Eastern Baghdad.

They are apparently assumed to be insurgents.

Carrying Girl Wikileaks-Baghdad

After the initial shooting, an unarmed group of adults and children in a minivan arrives  on the scene and attempts to transport the wounded.

They are fired upon as well. The official statement on this incident initially listed all adults as insurgents and claimed the US military did not know how the deaths occurred.

Wikileaks released this video with transcripts and a package of supporting documents on April 5th 2010

` Remains of Those Killed in 911 Attack are Moved Amid Family Protests ‘

#AceGuestNews – NEW YORK –  The unidentified remains of those killed in the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City were moved into a repository at the bedrock level of Ground Zero on Saturday after a procession through Manhattan streets.

The 7,930 fragmentary remains in sealed containers were escorted by fire, police and Port Authority vehicles with flashing lights and no sirens from a Manhattan forensics lab to the repository at the site of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

The repository will be under the care of the city’s chief medical examiner, whose office will continue trying to match the fragments to the more than 1,000 victims of the attacks that have yet to have had any remains identified.

The repository is sealed off from exhibition areas by a wall and will only be accessible to the medical examiner’s staff and family members of the victims, who will be able to visit the space even when the museum is closed, the city has said.

Some family members of those killed in the attacks protested the move, saying it was wrong to store the remains at what is essentially a tourist site, adding that the underground repository could be subject to flooding.

They put black bands over their mouths in a silent protest as the procession rolled past.

“The human remains repository is most certainly a part of the museum,” Jim Riches, the chairman of the 9/11 Parents & Families of Firefighters and WTC Victims group, said in a statement.

Other family members have supported the move.

` Abu Ghaith has been Convicted of ` Terrorism-Related Charges ‘ including, Conspiring to Provide Material for Terrorist’s ‘

#AceWorldNews – NEW YORK – (Reuters) – Suleiman Abu Ghaith, a son-in-law of Osama Bin Laden, was found guilty of terrorism-related charges on Wednesday following a three-week trial that offered unusually vivid details of the former al Qaeda leader’s actions in the days after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Abu Ghaith, 48, a Kuwait-born Muslim cleric, faces life in prison after a federal court jury in New York convicted him of conspiring to kill Americans, conspiring to provide material support for terrorists, and providing such support.

Jurors took just over one day to reach a verdict in a courtroom that is blocks from the site of the World Trade Centre destroyed in the hijacked plane attacks nearly 13 years ago.

Abu Ghaith’s court-appointed lawyer, Stanley Cohen, said there were several issues he would raise on appeal.
They include U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan’s decision to bar testimony from Pakistan-born Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the man the U.S. government accuses of masterminding the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

“He was stoic, he was at ease,” Cohen said of Abu Ghaith’s reaction to the verdict. “I think he feels that it was impossible under the circumstances to receive a fair trial.”

The judge scheduled September 8 for sentencing.

UN Report: `Clearly indicates that the `Syrian Government ‘ bears the bulk of the ` Responsibility ‘ in the Ability of Aid reaching People ‘

#AceWorldNews – UNITED NATIONS – March 26 – A U.S. official said that the UN report clearly indicates that the Syrian government bears the bulk of responsibility in the inability of aid workers from reaching civilians most in need of assistance.

After a month of reaching the UN Security Council to agree a rare and issued a resolution calling for the entry of aid to Syria in a fast, safe and unhindered said OIC Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a new report that the situation “is still a very big challenge.”

He criticized the report submitted to the Security Council that on Sunday, but did not officially published after the Syrian government and opposition groups alike because of disabled and aid to civilians trapped by the fire in the civil war for more than three years.

But the report casts from the standpoint of Washington, the bulk of the blame on the Syrian government.

He said the U.S. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity, “the report shows that the scale of the violence perpetrated by the Assad regime and the level of frequency is much more than what is done by the armed groups in Syria.”

“The Syrian government has resorted to massive and indiscriminate violence is the single most important factor behind the humanitarian crisis … the report is very clear in this regard and in reference to the government’s failure to implement the terms of the resolution.”

And rejected the Syrian ambassador to the United Nations, Bashar Jaafari, the so-called “biased way and is sincere in looking at the report.”

He told Reuters that Washington “does not recognize the enormous positive developments that have been made between the Syrian government and by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the other side.”

“The U.S. approach is negative from the beginning of the crisis in Syria.”
