The fire in the port city of Constanta marks Romania’s third such blaze in under a year. In January, a ward in Bucharest’s Matei Bals Hospital went up in flames, killing at least five people. The blaze in the capital prompted President Klaus Iohannis to call for urgent reform to his country’s underdeveloped healthcare infrastructure, vowing that such a tragedy must never happen again.

Last November, 10 patients died after a fire engulfed an intensive care unit for Covid cases in Piatra Neamt, in the country’s north.

Romania, which is home to some 19 million people, ranks second-lowest for vaccinations against coronavirus across the 27-member state EU bloc, with only around 28% of its population having so far been immunized.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Eastern European nation has registered more than 1.2 million cases and 37,041 Covid-related fatalities.

(LONDON) MET Specialist Crime Command Report: Thirteen men have been arrested – and 54 men and one male juvenile have been safeguarded – following a joint operation with the Romanian Police #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Sept.29: The investigation was launched by detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command in August 2019 after intelligence highlighted a Romanian organised crime group (OCG) operating between Romania and the UK.

#AceDailyNews says that thirteen people have been arrested in raids by MET officers and the Romania Police simultaneously executed a number of warrants in early morning raids on Tuesday, 28 September, as part of a proactive operation targeting the human trafficking of Romanian citizens to the UK: As enquires continue……

CASE NOTES: Romanian adult nationals have been recruited and trafficked to the Kingsbury area of north London to work on building sites as unskilled labourers: Four warrants were executed in Harrow and Brent. Cash and a firearm were also seized: The males were found housed in multi-occupancy addresses with mattresses covering the whole floor space. Occupants were found sleeping in extremely cramped conditions. They are now receiving support from specialist officers: Eight men have been arrested in London for human trafficking. They have been taken to a north London police station: A further five men were arrested in Romania where gold and around 250,000 Euros were seized from the OCG: Officers have been working in conjunction with the Romanian authorities on this investigation: Four warrants were executed in Harrow and Brent. They were carried out with the assistance of officers from the Taskforce’s Territorial Support Group (TSG) and Romanian Police: Those arrested are aged between 22 and 49 years old. They have been arrested for a variety of offences, including causing another to complete forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking contrary to the modern slavery act 2015.

Detective Constable Dec Wilson, from Central Specialist Crime, said: “These arrests in the UK and abroad are the result of working closely with our partners in Romania for the past 18 months, to identify those involved in the human trafficking and labour exploitation: This Eurojust Joint Investigation Team should serve as a warning to other organised crime networks that the Met is committed to working with international law enforcement to target those committing modern day slavery offences in London: We need the public’s help as they have an important role to play in recognising and reporting modern slavery. If you suspect someone may be a victim of modern slavery, report it. You will always be taken seriously, and protection and support is available: Often those affected do not see themselves as potential victims of labour exploitation and many will have been coerced into this life to make money for an organised crime network: We believe there are victims of modern slavery in every borough across London and the public may encounter them every day, possibly without realising. As well as being exploited for labour, victims have been found working in construction, domestic servitude, agriculture, cannabis factories and in places you use yourself, such as car washes, barbers and nail bars: Victims are often told the police and authorities in the UK are not to be trusted and with limited English the victims are unable to seek help, even if they want to.”

If you suspect that you, or someone you have come into contact with, may be a victim of modern slavery or trafficking and require support, please call The Salvation Army’s 24 hour confidential referral helpline on 0800 808 3733. This is the best way to get support to anyone you suspect might be a victim……………….You can also report a suspicion or seek advice through the Modern Slavery Helpline confidentially on 08000 121 700. This is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year…………….You can also report to the police online or by calling 101, in case of an emergency dial 999. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

MOLDOVA: ‘ Dignity & Truth Protesters Rally Against Corruption ‘

#AceNewsReport – MOLDOVA:June.07: Nearly 10,000 protesters came out onto the streets of central Chisinau on Sunday to protest corruption and to call on those responsible for the country’s corruption-ridden paralysis to resign and face prosecution, local media have reported.

People protest on Streets against Corruption '
‘ People protest on Streets against Corruption ‘

Organized by the ‘Dignity and Truth’ civic group, an eclectic collection of civic activists, political scientists and journalists, the mostly pro-EU oriented protesters voted on a resolution against the pro-EU coalition government, saying its lack of political will has led to a loss of confidence inside the country and in the eyes of its international partners.

The resolution demanded that members of the parliament and judges be stripped of their immunity from prosecution, and called on state officials involved in the scandal surrounding the theft of nearly a billion euros from three banks to face punishment. The civic group gave the government until August 27 (Moldova’s Independence Day) to meet their demands, threatening to return with larger protests.

The phrases “Down with the traitors!”, “Down with the Mafia!”, “Criminals to Jail!” and “Igor Plahotnyuk [a local oligarch], don’t forget, your home is in jail!” could be heard coming from the crowd and seen on homemade posters. Some of the protesters carried Moldovan, Romanian and EU flags.

Speaking before the crowd, Igor Botan, a well-known local pro-EU political scientist and one of the leaders of Dignity and Truth, stated that “we must step up protests in order to see justice, including over the theft of a billion euros from the banking system. We believe that the architects of this robbery of the century are themselves the leaders of the ruling parties. Without active protests, [authorities] will not do anything.”

Botan added that authorities have promised that a third of the money stolen in the country’s recent banking scandal may be returned, “two thirds will be transferred to the national debt, so that we the tax payers will be forced to return it. We cannot sit idly by and watch this. It is obvious that those who are responsible for this situation will not punish themselves.”

Dignity and Truth had earlier held several large-scale meetings, the last of which took place in early May and gathered nearly 50,000 people.

#AceWorldNews MOSCOW May 23 Russia has to take…

#AceWorldNews – MOSCOW – May 23 – Russia has to take retaliatory measures as NATO is building up its forces near the country’s borders, General Valery Gerasimov, the chief of general staff of the Russian armed forces, said on Friday.

“NATO’s military groupings in the Baltic states, Poland and Romania are being built up, as well as the military presence of the bloc in the Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea,” Reuters quoted Gerasimov as saying at a conference in Moscow.

The events in Ukraine have aggravated a military-political situation in Europe, he said.

` NATO Considering Permanently Stationing Troops in Parts of Eastern Europe ‘

#AceWorldNews – NATO – May 07 – NATO’s top military commander says the alliance must consider permanently stationing troops in parts of Eastern Europe as a result of tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove said on May 6 that the issue will be discussed by NATO commanders, defense ministers, and foreign ministers in the run-up to a summit in Wales in early September.

NATO’s short-term agreements to rotate land, sea, and air forces in places like the Baltics, Romania, and Poland are expiring at the end of 2014.

The alliance has deployed additional forces in the Baltics and Poland in response to Russia’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula and the deployment of tens of thousands of Russian troops on Russia’s border with Ukraine.

NATO officials have said recently that Russia can no longer be viewed as a potential partner but rather must be seen as an adversary.

` Canadian Forces Personnel Leaves for Romania to Assist NATO Forces in Eastern Europe ‘

#AceBreakingNews – CANADA – April 30 – Six CF-18s and hundreds of Canadian Forces personnel left for Romania to help NATO forces in Eastern Europe amid uncertainty over the scope of the mission.

It is the biggest deployment of military aircraft to Romania from another NATO member since the Ukraine crisis broke out.

“There is a lot of uncertainty about what we’re going to be doing over there,” Lieutenant-General Yvan Blondin said at a press conference with Defence Minister Rob Nicholson in Bagotville, where the CF-18 Hornets are based.

Blondin mentioned that the troops were going to perhaps participate in routine training exercises – but he is still not sure what the mission will involve.

“We’re not sure how long we’re going to be staying, but we’ll be staying until the government tells us it’s time to come back,” Blondin said.

Six fighters have set off, accompanied by a C-17 cargo plane carrying spare parts, tools and mechanical equipment.

The fighters first headed to Iceland before receiving further direction from Department of National Defence’s Central Command on where they will be stationed in Romania, which borders Ukraine.

All in all, up to 250 Canadian military personnel are set to be deployed for the NATO mission.

` Russian Attack Plane engaged in `Provacative Acts ‘ towards the USS Donald Cook in International Waters ‘

#AceWorldNews – UNITED STATES – April 15 – (QHA) – A Russian attack plane engaged in “provocative” acts Saturday towards the destroyer USS Donald Cook in international waters, the Pentagon said on Monday evening, Novinite reports.

Over the course of about 90 minutes, a Russian SU-24 fighter jet made 12 “close-range, low-altitude” passes near the Cook while the ship was in international waters in the western Black Sea near Romania, Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters.

Warren said the aircraft did not respond to multiple queries and warnings from the Cook. No shots were fired and the plane appeared to be unarmed, based on visual observations made by those aboard the Cook, Warren said.

“This provocative and unprofessional Russian action is inconsistent with international protocols and previous agreements on the professional interaction between our militaries,” Warren said.

There have been no communications between the Pentagon and the Russian ministry of defence since the incident.

` When Begging Becomes a `Business ‘ in the ` Story of How to Become a Good Beggar ‘ in Germany ‘

#AceGuestNews – HAMBURG – March 30 – The new recruit learned how to be a good beggar on his first day in Germany, on an abandoned lot on the far side of the tracks at Hamburg’s central train station.

At the beginning of his lesson, he was told to put on two old sweaters and was given a blue crutch so that he could practice walking with it.

He would through his left leg further forward than his right, causing his hips to buckle as he stumbled across the grass.

After about 10 meters (40 feet), he came to a stop, bent his upper body forward and said three German words, drawing out the first vowel sound: bitte (please), danke (thank you) and Entschuldigung (excuse me).

Then he haltingly told a story in which he described himself as the father of a son who is waiting for an operation in a Romanian Orphanage.

The child in this story has brittle bone disease, and his limbs are twisted and fragile. The man practised for half an hour while his boss, as he says, stood next to him and watched.

The man, Vasile Rotaru, a 31-year-old whose name has been changed by the editors, has a slight build, a solid belly and thick arms.

He comes from a village in Transylvania, in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, in central Romania. When he arrived in Germany at the beginning of the year, he had a modest dream:

He wanted to find work, perhaps build a small house and achieve happiness. He had no idea of the high standards that exist in the German labour market.

The sky is dark blue on this late January afternoon, three days after his arrival in Hamburg, and Rotaru is standing in a corner at the train station, wrapped in an old jacket. He holds out a paper cup containing a few coins, and appears to be perspiring.

Pedestrians walk past him, buses depart behind him and cooing pigeons land in front of his feet. If someone were to take a long-exposure photograph of Rotaru from above, he would appear as an unmoving dot in the midst of a blurred tide of movement.

` US Military are Planning large scale ` War Games ‘ in ` Poland ‘ comes three days after visit by Biden ‘

#AceWorldNews – The United States military are planning large scale war games in Poland, which would involve troops from several eastern European states, the American ambassador to the country, Stephen Mull, said.

Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) will be participating in drills, together with the Americans, Mull told Radio ZET.

Lask airbase in central Poland has been selected as the venue for the military exercise, the ambassador said, refraining from saying when it was scheduled for.

Mull’s announcement comes just three days after US Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to the Polish capital of Warsaw.

Biden’s trip was aimed at reassuring that America remains a “steadfast ally” to Poland and the Baltic States after they expressed anxiety over the events in the Crimea, which signed a treaty of accession to the Russian Federation on Tuesday.
