The drone hit a car with Al Qaeda fighters in Marib province, in the Husoun al-Jalal area in Abieda Valley, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. They said authorities were checking for the identities of the slain militants.
Last year and in early January, drone strikes killed more than 12 suspected Al Qaeda militants in the same area of Marib province.
The U.S. considers Yemen’s branch of Al Qaeda, also known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, to be the most dangerous in the world. The group overran large swaths of territory in southern Yemen in 2011 but the military has pushed back and over the past few weeks, the army and security forces have stepped up an offensive to rout militants from their strongholds.
The U.S., which trains Yemen’s counterterrorism forces, has been waging a heavy campaign of drone strikes in the impoverished country against suspected Al Qaeda targets, launching more than 100 such strikes since 2002, according to the nonpartisan public policy institute New America Foundation.
However, civilian casualties in the drone strikes have sparked anger in the country and among human rights groups.
Yemen’s Interior Ministry corrected late Sunday an earlier press release saying three suspected Al Qaeda militants were killed in clashes with security forces not far from the presidential palace in the capital, Sanaa, during the day. The new statement said the three victims were civilians who died in the crossfire.

The attack comes a couple of days after gunfire near the presidential palace in Sanaa and an apparent assassination attempt on the defense minister.

Witnesses said the clashes were ongoing and heavy gunfire could be heard in the area surrounding the presidential place. An explosion was also heard near a government building housing political security staff, although the cause of the explosion was not clear. Yemen has been plagued by secessionist and religious insurgency for the last decade.
#AceWorldNews – SANAA, Yemen – Yemeni military officials say thousands of troops, backed by tanks and war-planes, have launched a major offensive in a southern province to rout Al-Qaeda militants from the area.
The officials say the operation in Hadramawt began at dawn on Wednesday, involving more than 10,000 troops, backed with tanks and artillery. Helicopter gunships and jet-fighters are providing air support.
They said the fighting was taking place in farmlands and that civilians have been instructed to stay indoors.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
The United States sees Al Qaeda in Yemen as among the world’s most active branches of the terror network.
Its fighters overran large swathes of southern Yemen in 2001 but they have been pushed back with U.S. help.

#AceWorldNews- SANAA – April 24 – (ALKABAR) – Al-Qaeda militants have seized hospitals in southern Yemen to treat wounded comrades following blistering air strikes that killed scores of gunmen in two days, medics said Thursday.
An intensive aerial campaign by US drones and Yemeni jet fighters on al-Qaeda bases in the rugged mountains of nearby Abyan province killed some 70 people over the weekend, many of them believed to be militants.
On Sunday, militants stormed the hospital of Azzan, in Shabwa province, as well as two smaller medical centres in nearby districts, the sources said.

Kidnapping is common in Yemen where the government is fighting an insurgency from separatist movements in the north, Al-Qaeda-linked Islamists and armed tribes.

The unmanned aircraft fired two rockets at a vehicle in the Khalka area of Jawf province, AFP reported.
Ali Juraym, a local militant chief, who had fought in Iraq, was reportedly among those killed.
The US military operates all drones flying over Yemen in support of Sanaa’s campaign against Al-Qaeda.
#AceWorldNews says that Yemeni security forces were on Friday hunting down 29 inmates, including 19 suspected Al-Qaeda members, who broke out of jail in the capital, Sanaa, AFP reported.
The Interior Ministry said 29 people convicted “of various terrorist and criminal charges” escaped when a blast breached the facility’s outer wall Thursday.
The two-pronged assault began when an explosives-laden vehicle slammed into the jail’s eastern gate just after sunset. Seven members of the security forces were reportedly killed and four wounded in the assault.
