WASHINGTON: Whitehouses West Wing Evacuated after Bomb threat at Capitol Hill @ABC

@acenewsgroup – The West Wing at the White House was evacuated today shortly after the Capitol community had its own scare when a bomb threat was phoned into a Senate office building.

Metropolitan Police received a bomb threat over the phone at 1:53 p.m., according to a Secret Service official, after which the West Wing was evacuated.

The evacuation was limited to the West Wing, the official said.

The West Wing threat was cleared shortly after 2:30 p.m. The press corps has returned to the briefing room and the daily briefing is continuing as scheduled.

Shortly after noon, the U.S. Capitol Police evacuated a portion of the Dirksen Senate Office Building after an unidentified individual phoned in a bomb threat, authorities said.

A short time later, U.S. Capitol Police investigated a second suspicious package that was in the Russell Office Building’s courtyard that turned out to be an unattended lunch cooler, authorities said.

The phoned bomb threat at the Dirksen building also was cleared and nothing hazardous was located.

At the White House, the press corps was moved to the South Court Auditorium in Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

` Six Car Oil-Train Derailment Cause Unknown Though One of 100 Cars is Known to have Leaked ‘

#AceWorldNews – COLORADO – May 09 – Emergency crews have been working to clear a six-car oil train derailment that leaked some crude into a ditch Friday in northern Colorado, AP reported.

A vacuum truck was brought in to suck up the spill, with tanker trucks nearby to transfer the oil.

State and local emergency officials determined that one car of the 100-car train was leaking after the 8 a.m. derailment near LaSalle, about 45 miles north of Denver.

The cause of the derailment was under investigation, said Micki Trost, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Division of Emergency Management. Crews had contained the spill to a ditch away from any waterways, Trost said.

The amount of oil spilled wasn’t immediately known, but a vacuum truck was brought in to suck up the spill. Tanker trucks lined up nearby to transfer the oil.

According to The Greeley Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/m96ows9 ), the train was loaded in nearby Windsor with Niobrara crude and was bound for New York. Niobrara oil comes from the Niobrara shale formation in Colorado, Wyoming and Kansas. It’s not considered as volatile as Bakken crude from North Dakota and eastern Montana.

` South Sudan Rival Leaders Sign a Ceasefire in Next 24 hours to Prevent All Out Genocide ‘

#AceWorldNewsSouth Sudan‘s two rival leaders have signed a ceasefire deal, following international pressure to avert famine and genocide.

President Salva Kiir and rebel chief Riek Machar met face-to-face on Friday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, for the first time since mass violence broke out in December.

After a signing ceremony in the city’s presidential palace, Kiir said: “Now we have come to our senses…dialogue is the only answer to whatever problem we had. We will continue to move in the right direction.”

White House National Security Advisor Susan E Rice welcomed the development. In a statement issued on Friday evening, she said that fighting in South Sudan had “robbed the country of hope and denied its people the peace and prosperity they deserve”.

“We urge President Kiir and Mr. Machar to move swiftly to honor the agreement in word and deed by ending the violence and negotiating in good faith to reach a political agreement that can ensure stability, prosperity and peace for all of South Sudan’s people.”

Joseph Ochieno, a London-based commentator on African affairs, told Al Jazeera: “There is just about a possibility that it [the ceasefire] will work.

` Scientists Create a Self-Healing Skin Inspired by the Human Vascular System ‘

#AceNewsServices – ILLINOIS – May 09 – Developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, the new polymer is 100 times stronger then previously designed self-repairing plastics, making it capable of fixing holes as wide as 3 cm.

According to BBC News, researchers were inspired by the veins and arteries found in the human body, and moved to recreate a synthetic vascular system capable of delivering the liquid healing agent needed to patch holes that occur.

“Although self-healing of microscopic defects has been demonstrated, the re-growth of material lost through catastrophic damage requires a regenerative-like approach,” Professor Scott White, one of the lead researchers at the University of Illinois, told the news outlet.

Previously, scientists filled polymers with a capsule containing a specific chemical capable of making repairs. When the polymer was penetrated, the liquid was released and “bridged” the newly created gaps.

By recreating a network similar to the human vascular system, scientists developed a much faster way to distribute the healing chemicals, which now arrive in two different streams and combine to spread a gel-like substance over the affected area. When the gel hardens, the plastic regains roughly 62 percent of its original strength.

“We filled regions exceeding 35mm within 20 minutes, and restored mechanical function within three hours,” the researchers wrote in an article for Science.

“Vascular systems can potentially eliminate fracture in materials by preventing small, noncritical cracks from propagating to critical sizes,” they added.

While the breakthrough is impressive, White and his fellow researchers stated that further research would be needed, and an even more effective distribution system would be required before the plastic would be able to repair itself after more devastating ruptures. In the future, scientists would like products to be able to repair themselves after suffering from bullet strikes and even bomb damage.

“When damage is unpredictable and uncontrolled, more complex and interconnected vascular networks will be necessary to provide sufficient vascular coverage and redundancy to circumvent channel blockage,” Prof White and his co-authors wrote.

Until then, let’s just hope they figure out a way to fix all these broken smartphone screens.
