*BREAKING NEWS* Ukraine: Helicopter Shot Down Over Slavyansk

A Ukrainian helicopter has been shot down over the pro-Russian stronghold of Slavyansk as fighting there continues to worsen.
Ukraine’s defence ministry said the pilots had survived but elsewhere in the east of the country four paramilitary policemen were shot dead in fighting.
A number of other rebels and civilians are also thought to have been killed or injured, according to Sky’s Stuart Ramsey, who is in eastern Ukraine.

The helicopter, an Mi-24, came under fire from a heavy machine gun and crashed into a river.
The ministry said in a statement the crew were evacuated to a nearby camp but did not give any detail of their condition.
At least three other helicopters have been shot down by pro-Russian rebels in the violence that is increasing in eastern parts of the country.
Pictures shot by news wires showed pro-Russia rebels carrying rocket launchers and rocket propelled grenades.
The four police officers were killed in fighting near Slavyansk after Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said they were ambushed by separatist rebels on the outskirts of the city of 118,000.
The fighting has been intensifying since the Ukrainian forces began an operation to remove the rebels from the strongholds in a number of eastern towns and cities.
Reuters reported that cars were ferrying the wounded from the sites of the clashes but there were no figures for fatalities on the side of the separatists.
One civilian woman in Slavyansk was reported to have been hit in the head by a bullet, and pictures showed the funeral of a 21-year-old nurse Yulia Izotova, in Kramatorsk, who was said to have been killed in fighting in the surrounding area in the days before.

Russian internet giant Yandex has apologized for the remarks of the head of Yandex.Urkaine, Sergey Petrenko, who seemingly hailed the May-2 Odessa massacre by saying that “All is good [now]. The city has been practically cleansed of separatists,” in a discussion on his Facebook page.

According to Yandex’ press-service, Petrenko’s remarks, which have caused outrage online, “is not our official position, it is, certainly, his personal and emotional statement,” adding that the particular quote has also been taken out of discussion’s context.

“We would like to express our sincere condolences to all the relatives and loved ones of the people who died in Odessa, and once again apologize for the situation,” the press-service said.

Hate speech has been on the rise in Russian-Ukrainian discussions on social networks, and the tragic Friday events sparked both anti-Ukrainian and anti-Russian rhetoric online. To downplay the pro-Kiev radicals’ responsibility for the death of some 40 anti-government activists, many, including Petrenko, have blamed the deceased for “calls for unrest and violence,” “provocations” and “rallying under foreign flags,” claiming they caused the incident themselves.

According to Morozov, a commission from Kiev has been dispatched to the central Ukrainian city to force the Berkut officers to join the military operation.

The situation must be immediately discussed with the OSCE and relayed to the international military tribunal at The Hague, he said.

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE – April 27 – Commander of the “Donetsk Republic” self-defence forces, Igor Strelkov, has confirmed reports that three members of the Alpha special tactical assault group of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) have been detained in the city of Gorlovka, in Donetsk region.

Their task reportedly was to abduct one of the self-defence force leaders, Igor Bezler, whose group is controlling the local police department in Gorlovka, but instead they were captured themselves.

The prisoners were searched and blindfolded and brought to nearby Slavyansk, where their guns, documents and IDs as well as other belongings were demonstrated to the media during a press conference.

During questioning, the detained officers revealed that a special unit that has infiltrated the city comprised of seven men.

The captives claimed they had no time for any wrongdoing as they “just arrived” in the city and were getting acquainted with it and investigating approaches for fulfilling their mission, which they admitted was “invariably impossible.”

They did not say however who authorized the operation and was in control of it. They also did not tell where the rest of the group went after they split, or how many similar groups could be operating in the region.

No Ukrainian troops were injured or killed during the military operation at the Kramatorsk airfield, a source in the Ukrainian Defence Ministry told Interfax-Ukraine. The source could not provide any details on the number of casualties among the ranks of anti-government activists.

According to the ministry and sources cited by RIA Novosti, routes in and out of Kramatorsk are being controlled by the Ukrainian armed forces. However, some 100 anti-government protesters are still holding barricades inside the town.

Itar-Tass cites Ukrainian military sources as saying that the situation in the town is “calm,” and that National Guard troops loyal to Kiev are operating there.

Ukraine’s acting president says army troops have restored control over a small airport in eastern Ukraine, Kramatorsk that had been occupied by pro-Russian activists.

It was the first military action taken by the government after acting President Aleksandr Turchinov announced an “anti-terrorist operation” against the protesters who have seized control of numerous buildings in the east of the country. (AP)

A Ukrainian general leading the operation against protesters in the east of the country has warned that activists who refuse to lay down their arms will be “destroyed.”

“They must be warned that if they do not lay down their arms, they will be destroyed,”General Vasily Krutov, first deputy head of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) told reporters, as cited by AFP.

Krutov, recently appointed chief of the SBU’s Anti-Terrorist Center, then alleged that activists were being supported by hundreds of soldiers from the Russian army’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).

There are several confirmed deaths among anti-government activists in Kramatorsk, reports war correspondent and member of the Russian Presidential Council of Human Rights, Maksim Shevchenko. “Ukraine is on the brink of civil war and it is scary,” he said after a meeting with his counterparts from Belarus and Kazakhstan.

The only way to normalize the situation is to create conditions for economic development and dialogue so that the interests of all ethnic groups are taken into account and ethnic Russians can use their language, he said.

15:24 GMT:
There are currently no Ukrainian army vehicles inside the Donetsk region city of Slavyansk, say live reports on anti-government channels set up by eastern Ukrainian activists.

The activists dismissed media reports that 500 soldiers and 20 APCs had entered the city.

A Reuters correspondent heard several shots fired from inside Kramatorsk air base on Tuesday as a crowd of pro-Russian locals approached the gate of the facility that appeared to be under the control of Ukrainian forces.

There was no sign of casualties and no gunfire or fighting during the 40 minutes before the shots were fired, the correspondent said. (Reuters)

#AceWorldNews – SLAVYANSK, April 15 – Anti-Kiev protesters in Slavyansk, eastern Ukraine, have returned weapons to the local militia after it had taken the side of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The main task of the militia is to maintain public order and fight manifestations of extremism

All weapons, except automatic guns, have been returned to the militiamen who have started patrolling the city streets, Slavyansk’s acting mayor Vyacheslav Ponomaryov told ITAR-TASS on Monday.
“Militia is on our side.

They are starting to patrol the streets together with the Cossacks and the self-defence forces,” Ponomaryov said.
