(CALIFORNIA) Justice Court Report: A man was sentenced Friday to 55 years in prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release for sexual exploitation of a minor and distribution of child pornography #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Oct.12: Investigators thereafter searched Blanco’s residence and digital devices and discovered that he had successfully persuaded and coerced multiple minors to produce sexually explicit material. Blanco used various methods of deception and enticement, including by pretending to be a modeling agent or to be a minor himself. Blanco used Snapchat, Kik, Musical.ly and other applications to communicate with minor females for the purpose of having those minors create and transmit to him images of themselves engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Blanco admitted, as part of his plea agreement, that he communicated with at least 50 minors and asked for and received sexually explicit images from many of them.

#AceDailyNews reports that a man has been sentenced to 55yrs-in-prison: Jacob Blanco, 29, of Fresno, pleaded guilty in May 2020 to sexual exploitation of a minor and receipt and distribution of material involving sexual exploitation of minors. According to court documents, Blanco’s activities were discovered in March 2017 when the parents of a then six-year-old discovered the child had communicated with and created sexually explicit images at the request of another user on the social media application Musical.ly (now TikTok). Law enforcement investigators subsequently identified the offender as Blanco.

“The defendant used an array of social media to target and manipulate young children,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “I commend the investigative and prosecution teams for their success in removing a dangerous child predator from the community. While no amount of jail time can undo the pain caused in this case, I hope today’s sentence brings a sense of justice and healing to those harmed by the defendant’s crimes.”

“Today’s sentence is warranted due to the seriousness of the defendant’s conduct, the large number of minor victims, and the impact that the defendant’s conduct has had – and will continue to have – on the dozens of children victimized by the defendant,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert for the Eastern District of California. “The fact that the defendant used social media to sexually exploit the victims serves as a reminder that the internet can be a dangerous place especially for children.”

“The abuse and exploitation of children is deeply cruel, violating the trust and safety of victims, which generates trauma that may never fully heal. We hope today’s sentence provides some measure of justice to those he harmed,” said Special Agent in Charge Tatum King of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). “HSI stands ready with its local, state and federal partners to bring a network of resources and its international law enforcement capabilities to bare against those who seek to exploit our most vulnerable. HSI appreciates the dedicated work of its special agents, computer forensics agents, criminal analysts, victim witness coordinators and forensic interviewers, together with the investigative and prosecutorial teams of our law enforcement partners, who are unwavering in their commitment to pursue these predators.”

HSI investigated the case, with valuable assistance provided by the Fresno County Sherriff’s Office and the Fresno Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David L. Gappa of the Eastern District of California and Trial Attorney Nadia C. Prinz of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) prosecuted the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute those who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. (SILICON VALLEY) JUST IN: Power Outrage Report: Social media services Facebook Inc with their associated services WhatsApp & Instagram hit and now backup after six hours #AceNewsDesk report

#AceDailyNews says according to media news Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram back after outage that lasted 6-hours with it being blamed on technical issue but Brian Krebs security analyst says it was their DNS records show no data present see below ……

Cybersecurity Expert Brian Krebs Explains What Is Known About Catastrophic Facebook Outage according to Breitbart By 04.Oct: 2021

Cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs says Facebook, as well as its Instagram and WhatsApp platforms, are all suffering from ongoing global outages due to someone from inside Facebook updating the company’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) records, which took away the map telling the world’s computers how to find its online properties. According to a New York Times reporter, employees cannot even open doors with their security cards due to the catastrophic outage.

While it remains unclear why this happened, Krebs says how it happened is clear: On Monday morning, something inside Facebook caused the company to rescind key digital records that tell computers and other devices how to find the destinations online.

A Tale of DNS & BGP: The Facebook Outage, October 2021

This is a short tale. One of despair and intrigue, as we realise the fragility of the global internet that we all so love and adore. On Monday 4th October 2021, people stopped scrolling through Facebook, they gave up posting selfies to Instagram, they ceased texting on WhatsApp, and Facebook employees abandoned doing any work. For all Facebook-owned websites were down, thanks to a couple of three letter acronyms: DNS and BGP.

While Facebook have not released any key details nor a postmortem, the internet is built on a series of open source standards and protocols that allow us to remotely inspect some of the fallout.

When you type facebook.comriskledger.com or any other name into your web browser of choice, an invisible background process begins. This starts with the Domain Name System, or DNS for short. It is often said to be the phone book of the internet. It is responsible for converting long series of arcane numbers, useful only to machines, to something memorable.

The DNS system is contacted by your web browser asking simply, “what is the internet address for facebook.com?”. Now if one device was answering every DNS question, it would quickly become overwhelmed, so over the years a distributed hierarchy formed. This starts with a DNS implementation built right into your device’s operating system, to devices called “recursers” operated by your ISP and sometimes large organizations such as Google or CloudFlare, and even scaling up to central “root” devices that know the whereabouts of every .com, .co.uk and more.

Facebook in this case, operates a set of intermediary DNS servers that are responsible for everything between your ISP’s recursers and the roots. These are responsible for facebook.com, instagram.com, whatsapp.com and everything else they operate. These servers are not responding. This is what we see above from our web browser when it hints to us the error is DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN. Our web browser tried it’s best to work out the internet address for Facebook, but it didn’t get a reply.

While DNS may allow our computers to rapidly translate from names useful to humans to numbers useful for computers, how does your device, with it’s own internet address, traverse the global internet to reach Facebook?

No two devices on the internet are directly connected. At home, you will have your residential ISP. In a datacentre, there will be multiple commercial ISPs. Given two internet addresses, how do the two communicate? This is where routing comes in.

multiple internet routers

Routing is the system by which a path between two devices is calculated and established, potentially traversing dozens of ISP networks in the process. Given there must be tens-of-thousands of ISPs, how do we ensure they all can speak to each other?

We establish a standard! In 1989 no less, the Border Gateway Protocol, or BGP for short, was accepted by the internet community as RFC 1105. The document laid out a protocol by which routers operated by different companies and ISPs could exchange routing information which each other.

So what does this have to do with Facebook? We discussed earlier how our web browsers were not receiving a response to their DNS questions, this was however not a result of DNS itself, it was a result of Facebook’s routers ceasing to speak BGP with the rest of the internet, and ultimately all of our ISP’s routers stopped knowing where to send our DNS requests, or any traffic to Facebook for that matter.

While we can speculate all day as to exactly what issue occurred on the 4th of October in Facebook’s infrastructure, it is however fun to arm-chair investigate using open source information, and send #hugops to the Facebook’s network operations team!

It blamed an internal technical issue, which not only affected Facebook’s services, but reportedly also employees’ work passes and email.

The services were down from about 16:00 GMT until around 22:00 on Monday.

But the company said there was “no evidence that user data was compromised”.

Sheera Frenkel, the New York Times’ technology reporter, told the Today programme part of the reason it took so long to fix was because “the people trying to figure out what this problem was couldn’t even physically get into the building” to work out what had gone wrong.

In a statement, Facebook said that the faulty configuration change affected the company’s internal tools and systems which complicated attempts to resolve the problem.

Downdetector, which tracks outages, said some 10.6 million problem reports around the world. However, the real number of people affected is much higher: more than 3.5 billion people use Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp.

According to the business website Fortune, it also cost Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg an estimated $6bn (£4.4bn) at one point as shares plummeted.

Mr Zuckerberg has apologised to those affected by the outage.

Some people also reported problems using Facebook’s virtual reality headset platform, Oculus, and apps which require Facebook logins were affected, including Pokémon Go.

An outage of this scale for such a long time is rare. A disruption in 2019 left Facebook and its other apps mostly inaccessible across the world for more than 14 hours

Several other tech companies, including Reddit and Twitter, poked fun at the social media giant’s predicament – prompting responses from the affected apps.

Hi and happy Monday 😵‍💫— Instagram (@instagram) October 4, 2021

The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.View original tweet on Twitter

The disruption comes the day after an interview with a former Facebook employee who leaked documents about the company.

Frances Haugen told CBS news on Sunday that the company had prioritised “growth over safety”.

On Tuesday she will testify before a Senate subcommittee in a hearing titled “Protecting Kids Online”, about the company’s research into Instagram’s effect on the mental health of young users.

Many outages get resolved fairly quickly. They are often localised too, with some people unable to open a website that can be viewed in another country.

This outage, however, was global, and affected all of Facebook’s many spin-offs.

The length of time it was off grid is also unusual. There were reports of “mayhem” in Facebook headquarters, as technicians scrambled to fix the problem.

Interesting too that the outage hampered Facebook’s ability to tackle the crash – bringing down internal tools needed to remedy the problem.

It should also be said that Facebook’s statement is carefully written. It doesn’t rule out foul play.

The week had already started off badly – after the whistleblower in the “Facebook Files” revelations revealed herself on Sunday.

But a bad week has become a terrible one for the social network.

(NEW YORK) Justice Dept Court Report: N.Y. Man sentenced to 36-months in prison for stealing dozens of nude photos of women by hacking into online social media accounts #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.22; Faber then stole, and traded online with others, private nude photographs and movies stored in the victims’ social media accounts. As a result of Faber’s crimes, the university had to allocate money and staff to identifying compromised accounts, reviewing computer and server access logs, resetting passwords and notifying students and parents.

#AceDailyNews reports that a New York man was sentenced today to 36 months in federal prison for computer fraud and aggravated identity theft in connection with his hacking of online social media accounts and theft of nude images of dozens of women: Nicholas Faber, 25, of Rochester, pleaded guilty on Feb. 8. According to court documents, Faber admitted that from about 2017 to 2019, he worked with co-conspirator Michael Fish to access the school email accounts of dozens of female SUNY-Plattsburgh students and then used information from those school email accounts to gain access to the victims’ social media accounts……

Faber obtained his undergraduate degree from SUNY-Plattsburgh, graduating in 2017.

In addition to the 36 month prison sentence, United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino also imposed a three year term of supervised release, which will start after Faber is released from prison, and ordered him to pay $35,430 in restitution to SUNY-Plattsburgh and a $200 special assessment.

Fish pleaded guilty to computer hacking, aggravated identity theft and child pornography offenses on May 19, 2020 and is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 3.

This case was investigated by the FBI’s Albany Field Office with substantial assistance from the SUNY-Plattsburgh Police Department.

Deputy Chief Michael Stawasz of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua R. Rosenthal and Wayne A. Myers of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York are handling the case.

(BEIJING) State Tech Entities Report: The Chinese government has taken stakes in Chinese entities owned by tech companies ByteDance and Sina Weibo corporate records showed, amid a widening regulatory crackdown on the industry as shares plummet #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.17: WangTouZhongWen (Beijing) Technology, which is owned by three Chinese state entities including a fund backed by China’s main internet watchdog, has a 1% stake in Beijing ByteDance Technology, according to shareholder data from the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System.

#AceSocialDesk says Beijing owns stakes in ByteDance, Weibo domestic entities, records show news of the stakes and the board seat was first reported by The Information on Monday. read more

The stake gives Beijing a board seat at the subsidiary which holds some of the business licenses covering Douyin and Toutiao, some of ByteDance’s most popular domestic apps, a source familiar with the matter said.

August.17, 20214:57 AM BSTLast Updated 6 hours ago

It does not give not give the Chinese government any stake in the firm’s hit short video app TikTok, the source said. TikTok is not available in China.

The Chinese subsidiary “only relates to some of ByteDance’s China-market video and information platforms, and holds some of the licenses they require to operate under local law,” a ByteDance spokesperson told Reuters on Monday.

An affiliate, WangTouTongDa (Beijing) Technology, similarly holds a 1% stake in Beijing Weimeng Technology, Weibo’s main domestic subsidiary, according to a separate government data report and filings it made to the U.S. securities regulator.

Weibo did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the SEC filing, it said its unit received the investment from WangTouTongDa in April 2020 and that WangTouTongDa (Beijing) Technology had the right to appoint a director to Weiming’s three-member board.

Corporate information app Tianyancha said the ByteDance unit stake transfer was registered on April 30, 2021.

Although Chinese regulators have clamped down on a range of sectors, tech has come in for some of the harshest measures to date.

Regulators say they are concerned about issues ranging from its technology giants’ market power to their management of user data, and have launched antitrust probes, cancelled deals and published new guidance for the sector.

WangTouZhongWen (Beijing) Technology is co-owned by the China Internet Investment Fund, a China National Radio subsidiary and the Beijing Cultural Investment Development Group, its company registration filing showed.

The China Internet Investment Fund, which was established by the Cyberspace Administration of China and the country’s finance ministry, fully owns WangTouTongDa (Beijing) Technology.

Chinese tech stocks plummet as Beijing cracks down on online monopolies

Chinese tech stocks plummet as Beijing cracks down on online monopolies
RT Business Report:

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has issued draft rules aimed at preventing unfair competition on the internet. The news triggered a selloff in Chinese listed technology stocks in Hong Kong.

The latest measure comes as part of Beijing’s broader crackdown on Chinese technology majors and covers multiple areas, including prohibitions on the way corporations are using data, and stamping out fake product reviews.

Shares in game development giant Tencent dropped 3.5% in late morning trading on Tuesday, while online retail giant Alibaba was down 2.5%.

SAMR is expected to hire third-party auditors to check whether the companies fall foul of the rules. The regulator is currently seeking public opinion on the new restrictions until September 15. It hasn’t set a date for when the regulations will come into effect if publicly approved: Chinese tech stocks suffer worst sell-off since global financial crisis as Beijing pledges to step up screening of US-listed firms

Earlier this year, the regulator released new anti-monopoly guidelines targeting internet platforms. The new rules have tightened the existing restrictions faced by the country’s tech giants.

SAMR has also taken legal actions against some Chinese technology corporations, having issued hefty fines to Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings. The regulator blocked Tencent’s plan to merge video game streaming sites Huya and DouYu over antitrust concerns. It has also initiated a probe into food delivery firm Meituan for “suspected monopolistic practices.”

SEC Warns US Investors About Risks Of Buying Chinese Stocks As Crackdown In Beijing Continues

August 17, 2021A few weeks ago, the SEC quietly shut down the processing of any new Chinese IPOs, which seemed almost comical to us, considering any underwriter would probably have trouble lining up the financing since there’s approximately zero appetite for new Chinese listings in the post-DIDI world. And not because of what’s happening on the American side, but due to the mounting political risks in China.

But let’s set all that aside for a moment. Early Tuesday morning, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler released a new “Office Hours” clips where he not only confirmed that the SEC had, in fact, shut down processing of any new potential Chinese listings, but he also explained to American investors exactly what it is they’re owning when they buy shares in Chinese listings.

(LONDON) SCAM ALERT: BBC Action Fraud Report: On social media, there’s a new type of influencer, but instead of promoting clothing lines and lifestyle products, they promote fraud #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.16: They flash stacks of cash, hide their faces, and some even lure new recruits by selling guides on committing fraud: You’d think these scammers and their illegal products would be hard to find, and once upon a time, they were, hidden in the shadows of the dark web. But not any more.

#AceDailyNews says that the influencers promoting criminal scams on TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube all told us they did not allow fraud on their platforms. They said that they took fraud very seriously and were constantly clamping down on criminal content. The question is whether they can take it down faster than it’s being posted: Panorama: Hunting the Social Media Fraudsters is on BBC One at 19:35 BST on Monday or later on iPlayer

Delivery text scams and how to deal with them

By Kafui Okpattah
BBC Panorama

Stock photo of a man in a demin jacket lookig at his phone

As part of an investigation for BBC Panorama, I discovered just how easy it was to make deals with fraudsters and purchase fraud guides online. I also unmasked one anonymous influencer who has been selling them in a bid to use criminal cash to refund scam victims

On social, perpetrators of online retail fraud refer to it as “clicking”, making it seem more innocuous.

But committing fraud – which is defined by the police-run service Action Fraud as using trickery to gain a dishonest advantage, often financial, over another person – can lead to up to 10 years in prison.

The guides being traded are known as methods.

They can target banks, retailers and even the government’s Universal Credit system, leaving organisations and members of the public out of pocket.

And they all rely heavily on something known as fullz, slang for full information.

These are the personal details of an unconnected person: typically an individual’s name, phone number, address and bank details.

With the fullz in hand, fraudsters can follow the steps in the guides to make online purchases or even take out a loan in someone else’s name.

They have often come from phishing scams: Think of those dodgy emails or text messages that pretend to be from legitimate sources and con people into revealing their personal information.Sometimes these fraudsters conduct or commission phishing activities themselves, or sometimes they get hold of the information via others.

Exploiting a person’s “fullz” – by, for example, making purchases using their details – can wreck their credit score. A bad credit score can have life-changing implications: it affects your chances of applying for a loan, or getting a mortgage, or even opening a new bank account. I contacted one fraudster who was advertising his services on social media and, through a messaging app, he offered to build me a fake website and send 4,000 phishing texts on my behalf to get people’s personal details.

His fee was £115.Terms used by scammersmethods – tips on how to commit fraud fullz – short for full details. Relates to personal banking information (e.g. I can get you their fullz)clicking – fraudulently purchasing products from online retailersOn a separate Instagram profile, I noticed a scammer had posted some “fullz” – as a sort of free sample, encouraging people to pay to receive many more stolen details.

I decided to call some of the phone numbers that were listed. It was difficult listening to a stranger react as I told them their names, addresses, card details and phone numbers were posted online for anyone to see and exploit.I later met up with one of the victims, Wilson from Oxford, who said seeing all his details online was scary because it made him realise how unprotected he was. So why aren’t more people behind these schemes being caught?

Cybercrime specialist Jake Moore says investigators are facing an uphill battle to find the culprits.“Anonymous accounts are leaving not just a small amount of breadcrumbs to investigate them – there are no breadcrumbs,” he says. “There’s no digital footprint left behind them. So to investigate this is nearly impossible.”

But being an influencer inevitably means sharing some elements of your life online – and over time, one influencer has left behind a few too many clues. He calls himself Tankz, and in videos of him rapping online, he boasts: “I’m a London scammer. I see it, I want it, I click it.”He sells fraud guides – or methods.I posed as someone interested in learning about fraud and messaged Tankz about his methods via Instagram. We bought his top guide for £100. It arrived as a link, sent via social media, to 43 files on a cloud storage system: The files were filled with detailed techniques on how to exploit online retailers: They also directed would-be criminals to websites where they can buy “fullz”. We wanted to find out who this masked fraud influencer was.

Panorama analysed footage Tankz posted on social media, and realised he gave too much away while trying to remain anonymous: We noted a reference to north London’s Wembley as his local area, a mention of studying economics and finance at university, and a glimpse of his car number plate. One clip also featured a distinctive black-and-grey carpet, and we were able to find a match on a website advertising student accommodation in the Wembley area.We went to the block, spotted the car, and waited: Then we saw a man approach the car wearing the exact same tracksuit Tankz had been wearing earlier that day in a social media video.YouTube/

We had unmasked the masked fraudster but who was he? His social media posts are anonymous, but we discovered that his songs were also listed on Apple Music. On one of his tracks, the copyright isn’t listed to Tankz, but to what seems is his real name: Luke Joseph. It didn’t stop there. We discovered an email sent from Tankz’s official address which also made a reference to the same name: There was even an eBay account under the name of Tankz, where Luke Joseph is the contact address. Finally, we discovered that there was someone of the same name living in the same student accommodation block in Wembley. It seems that Tankz may be a London student called Luke Joseph. We contacted Luke Joseph, and Tankz, but we didn’t get a response: His TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat accounts were removed by the respective social media platforms after Panorama notified them about the content: Since then, he has created a new TikTok account where he continues to post about his life: So what are the wider authorities doing to crack down on online fraud and those who promote it?

Earlier this year, the government revealed plans to reduce illegal and harmful digital content. It wants the communications regulator Ofcom to police social media and hold big tech giants to account: Fraud-related content was not originally set to be included in this Online Safety Bill, but at the last minute the government changed its mind. The word “fraud” is still absent, but it could be covered by what the bill refers to as “illegal content”.Some have voiced concerns that it won’t specifically address the problem.

Arun Chauhan, a solicitor specialising in fraud, says he thinks the bill “is not fit for purpose in the fight against fraud”.But a government spokesperson told Panorama the new law would “increase people’s protection” from scams, and said they “continue to pursue fraudsters” and “close down the vulnerabilities they exploit”.

(ANKARA, Turkey.) JUST IN: Erdogan prepares to form a ‘Fake News’ monitoring agency on social media #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.16: President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signaled in the latest Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) the formation of a new monitoring agency that would restrict social media activity, the daily Türkiye reported on July 11.

#AceDailyNews says Erdoğan ‘signals formation of social media supervision agency,’” Duvar English, July 12, 2021 (thanks to The Religion of Peace): Biden’s handlers are likely taking notes in this and ready to make this social media censorship a government activity…..

The president noted a recent misunderstanding about legislation signed with Qatar, claiming that main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu had purposefully spread misunderstanding.

The legislation was interpreted as allowing all students from Qatar to study medicine in Turkey without any required qualifying exams, when in reality it allowed for military students to do so.

“What Kılıçdaroğlu did is not spreading fake news. It’s misinformation. The European Union equates and penalizes misinformation with terrorism crimes,” the president reportedly said.

The president urged his staff to include misinformation and fake news in legislation, adding that “appropriate penalties” were needed.

The president recently said that the government would launch an operation of truth against fake news by pointing to Kılıçdaroğlu who had repeated the misinterpretation of the news on Qatar students.

“Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu needs to apologize about this story,” the president reportedly said.

AKP officials reportedly said that the new monitoring agency would be similar to the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), known for its excessive censorship of opposition media outlets.

“A supervisory mechanism is needed for manipulative posts created by fake accounts and social media agencies,” one AKP official reportedly said. “Perception dominates facts. This is very dangerous.”…

(NEW DELHI, India.) Farmers Law Report: Are Leading One of the Largest Protests Yet Against Modi’s Government. Here’s What They’re Fighting For #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Mar.26: Hundreds of thousands of farmers have been protesting on the outskirts of Delhi for nearly two weeks, blocking many of the main arteries into the capital: Farmers are protesting against laws that deregulate the sale of crops, allowing private buyers more free rein in a marketplace that has long been dominated by government subsidies. Farmers say the reforms to laws that have long protected small landholders’ place in the market will put them at risk of losing their businesses and land to big corporations:

Farmers fighting against Modi reforms but the government says the reforms are necessary to increase the efficiency of India’s huge but meager farming sector, which accounts for nearly half of the country’s workforce but makes up only 16% of GDP:

The explosive demonstrations show the difficulty the Indian government faces passing economic reforms in such a large sector where there are many vested interests. It is also an example of an emerging trend of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popular government running into trouble after pushing through significant laws unilaterally.

Here’s what to know about the Indian farmer protests:

What have the protests been like?

The protests began in August in the states of Punjab and Haryana, and marched on Delhi in November. There, they were met by a heavy-handed police response. Officers used tear gas and water cannon on protesters in late November. And on Dec. 1 they detained Bilkis, an 82 year-old woman who became a figurehead of demonstrations against a controversial citizenship law earlier this year, who joined the farmers out of solidarity. Farmers received worldwide shows of support too, with diaspora communities protesting on their behalf in the U.K. and Canada.

Farmers' protest in India

Although some economists say the reforms are necessary, many have criticized the manner in which the laws were imposed. In September, at the height of the pandemic in India, the government succeeded in passing three agricultural reform laws in a short session of parliament, using a parliamentary maneuver to push through the reforms in the upper house. There was also barely any consultation with farmers. “The government did not consult a single farmers’ organization,” says Yogendra Yadav, the national president of Swaraj India, a political party that is supporting the farmers’ demands.

What are the Indian government’s reforms?

Since India’s “Green Revolution” in the 1960s, the Indian government has run a scheme where it guarantees farmers a set price for certain crops. Combined with advances in farming technology, that system has helped India move from widespread hunger to big annual food surpluses. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March, officials estimated there would be 100 million tons of grain available to see India through the lockdown, enough to last at least 18 months. But the system has also affected crop diversity, impacted the environment and disproportionately benefited larger farms over smaller ones.

The new laws do not eradicate the guaranteed minimum prices, which will remain in place. But they do get rid of previous restrictions on corporations buying land and stockpiling commodities beyond a certain level. They allow businesses to bypass markets where farmers’ produce is normally sold, and strike direct deals that farmers worry will be less subject to regulations. They also outlaw the practice of stubble burning, a change that farmers have demanded be reversed despite its environmental benefits.

“There’s no doubt that agriculture and markets need a lot of very serious public investment and reform,” says Mekhala Krishnamurthy, a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research, a New Delhi think tank. “We have a situation where Indian agriculture is the site of enormous livelihoods and economic opportunity, but it has also been riddled with huge challenges and a lot of economic distress.”

Why have farmers been resistant to the reforms?

While the government says the new laws will “empower farmers,” farmers’ unions say that the rule changes are not policies they have asked for. Instead, they fear that instead of trying to help farmers, the government is opening the door to big corporations who may eventually force them off their land and out of business.

“For many years, a certain agri-business lobby, backed by some of the biggest corporations in the county, has been wanting to enter agriculture,” says Yadav, of Swaraj India. “Similar proposals were put to previous governments as well, but no government had the political courage to do it because they knew it would be very unpopular with the farmers. There are large groups which want to enter agriculture. The problem is the laws in the country which do not allow big corporations to purchase land.”

What farmers really want, says Yadav, is the government to actually guarantee that its minimum prices for farm produce are accessible to all farmers. Currently, Yadav says, as many as 80% of farmers don’t receive the promised amount. “The government announces the minimum support price every year, but it remains on paper,” he says. “Because the government doesn’t back it with a system where farmers are actually assured that price.”

How widespread are the protests, and what is likely to happen next?

Farmers from across north India have resisted the reforms, but the protests have by and large been led by unions from Punjab and Haryana, two relatively prosperous states where the government-mandated markets are most developed, and where the government buys a majority of the wheat and rice produced by farmers.

“Farmers who depend on the system are worried that it will be removed over time, and they are not sure what will come in its place,” says Krishnamurthy. “The narrative is that private investment will come in its place. But that is not something that gives a lot of farmers a great deal of comfort.”

The protests so far have won the unions access to the government for negotiations. Three rounds of talks have happened so far, but have been inconclusive. More are scheduled for Wednesday. “The protests and the negotiations are the beginning of a process that should have started at the beginning,” Krishnamurthy says. “When you bring consequential reforms like this, without having adequate consultation and consensus building, there is a genuine expression of anxiety and concern.”

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) Breaking911 Report: At least 158-people have been arrested in Palmdale at a ‘ super spreader event ‘ last Saturday involving drugs, prostitution, underage drinking, and violence #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Dec.11: On Tuesday Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced details and results from an operation at a super-spreader event on Saturday, December 5, 2020, in Palmdale: The operation was done with extensive coordination and meticulous planning from various bureaus and units, including the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station, Human Trafficking Force, Operation Safe Streets Bureau, Aero Bureau, three patrol squads of the Mobile Field Force Personnel, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department obtained information that a massive underground party would occur at a vacant house in Palmdale. Previous incidents revealed parties like these often involve drugs, prostitution, underage drinking, and violence: During the well-executed operation on the 6300 blocks of West Avenue M8, 158 individuals were arrested; 116 of them were adults, and 35 were juveniles: Six firearms were confiscated: Most importantly, a girl that was categorized as a Commercially Sexually Exploited Child was rescued: The event was not only a violation of the Governor’s health order, but it was also criminal in nature:

Sheriff Villanueva asked local and state politicians to reconsider allowing the restaurant industry to re-open and instead target super-spreader events, which account for most COVID-19 transmissions: ” We will continue to apply common sense to our enforcement actions and weigh the letter of the law with the spirit of the law. It is my firm belief that this approach is a more efficient and effective means to manage the spread of this potentially deadly virus,” said Sheriff Villanueva:

(MONTREAL, Canada.) Coronavirus Report: #COVID19 Vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech has been approved in the second country to do so after the UK, where the first members of the public were inoculated with the jab on Tuesday according to the regulator #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport- Dec.10: Health Canada, the country’s drug regulator, announced the approval for Canadians aged 16 and over in a statement on Wednesday: The availability of a safe and effective vaccine will reduce the spread and severity of Covid-19 disease and reduce its social and economic consequences,” the statement said in its justification of the approval:

It added that the vaccine’s accompanying data supports its safety and said that its efficacy was found to be around 95 percent, while no safety concerns had been raised: Canada’s approval comes as US regulator the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on Wednesday reported concerns over the Pfizer jab, which began being rolled out across the UK on Tuesday in a world-first: The FDA said that four volunteers in phase-three trials for the vaccine had suffered facial paralysis, although it added that there is no evidence to link their taking of the jab to the medical condition, which resembles a stroke:

On Wednesday, UK regulator the Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) also issued a warning over the vaccine, telling people with a history of ‘significant’ allergies not to take it after two medics who were administered it suffered severe reactions:

The first Canadians could be given the vaccine as soon as next week, with those first in line for the jab including some 4,000 classed as “high-risk” in British Columbia and 124,500 key health workers across the country:

(PARIS, France.) JUST IN: President Emmanuel Macron has unveiled plans for France’s new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which will replace the navy’s current flagship, the Charles de Gaulle, by 2038 according to RT News #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Dec.08: Nuclear power will remain the cornerstone of our strategic autonomy,” Macron said on Tuesday, as he visited the Framatome nuclear reactor construction plant in the eastern town of Le Creusot: France’s new carrier – its 11th in total – will boast speeds of up to 27 knots (50 km/h), weigh in at around 75,000 tons, and run some 300 meters long – about 1.5 times the size of the Charles de Gaulle:

The new vessel will also be fitted with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system made by American defense firm General Atomics, and will be able to hold around 30 next-generation Rafale fighter jets: Set to be in service until around 2080, the new project’s price tag has been estimated at around €7 billion ($8.5 billion) by some media, although French officials have not confirmed its total cost:

France’s minister of the armed forces, Florence Parly, said the construction of the new aircraft carrier would create 2,000 jobs: The development of the vessel is part of a wider nuclear strategy Macron has set out for France. “Our energy and ecological future depends on nuclear power,” he said on Tuesday, adding that abandoning the energy source would “pave the way for the reopening of a coal plant.”

Macron also pledged to invest €500 million ($605 million) in the French nuclear sector:

(PARIS, France.) JUST IN: At least two riot police officers have been injured as demonstrations against the French government’s security bill in the city of Nantes descended into violence #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Dec.05: Some 3,000 people in Nantes joined Saturday’s nationwide protest action against the draft security policy bill introduced by President Emmanuel Macron’s government. The rally mostly went off peacefully, but things started rapidly heating up as evening drew in: As the rally spilled over into clashes between the demonstrators and police, protesters pelted officers with various projectiles while law enforcement responded with tear gas. The standoff ended up with two riot police officers being injured.

One of them was hit by a Molotov cocktail, according to the Loire-Atlantique prefecture. Both officers were evacuated by an emergency medical service. At least 13 people were arrested following the riots, according to the local authorities.

Over 90 protests against the security bill were held across France on Saturday. Paris saw particularly severe clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement, as groups of protesters smashed windows, burned cars and set barricades on fire. The scuffles ended up in some 30 arrests, according to various reports.

The country has been hit by a wave of protests over legislation introduced by the government and recently approved by the lower house of the French parliament in November. It provides additional surveillance tools to law enforcement and prohibits filming on-duty officers, as well as sharing their images online with the “intent to harm.”

Tear gas & burning cars: 22 arrested following clashes between protesters & police in Paris (VIDEOS)

In particular, the ban on filming police has sparked public anger and the French government responded by pledging to “rewrite” the relevant article earlier this week. Critics say the bill, if adopted, could make police less accountable for any brutality in their actions. They also argue that the latest government concession is not enough.

(BEIJING, China.) #Coronavirus Report: Promising candidate vaccines containing adjuvants provided by US & UK firms have delivered positive trial data, demonstrating their safety and efficacy against #COVID19 bio pharmaceuticals firm Clover claimed claimed from human trials on Friday as Russia rolls out Sputnik V next week #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthReport – Dec.04: On Friday, China’s biopharmaceuticals firm Clover claimed data from human trials showed their two candidate vaccines triggered a “strong immune response” against #Covid19 : Based on the positive Phase 1 results reported and the unprecedented need for COVID-19 vaccines, Clover and its partners are confident to enter late-stage clinical development for both adjuvanted vaccines,” the company said: The vaccines use adjuvants – that is, ingredients that can boost immune response – from UK pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and US firm Dynavax”

Clover says the vaccines did not trigger any serious adverse reactions in the 150 adults and senior citizens who took part in the trial: The candidate vaccine that used the adjuvant provided by GSK will begin global phase-two/three trials in December, funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)…….This vaccine variant induced neutralizing antibody production in all adult and elderly participants.

Clover also announced that the data shows both vaccines can be stored at temperatures of 2C to 8C for at least six months: This is considered a considerable plus, as both Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines required subzero storage and substantial cold-chain infrastructure: ” Combined with our ability to potentially produce more than one billion doses of antigen annually and the stability of our vaccines under standard refrigeration conditions, our adjuvanted COVID-19 S-Trimer vaccines are positioned to be well suited for worldwide distribution,” said Chief Executive Officer of Clover Biopharmaceuticals Joshua Liang.

The militants ambushed the farmers as they went into the rice fields to gather the harvest on Saturday. The bodies of 43 farmers have been recovered after the massacre, with around 30 of them being beheaded. The security forces have been searching the area for those missing: No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the tactics of the insurgents resembled those used by Islamic State-affiliate Boko Haram, which is responsible for thousands of civilian deaths in Nigeria over the past decade.

The burial ceremony for the 43 victims took place in Zabarmari village on Sunday, attended by hundreds of mourners and Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum: The bodies were wrapped in white burial shrouds and placed on wooden pallets as the priests led prayers for those killed: During his speech, Zulum called upon the federal government to recruit more security personnel to protect the local farmers, who found themselves “in a very difficult situation.”………….” On one side, they stay at home they may be killed by hunger and starvation, on the other, they go out to their farmlands and risk getting killed by the insurgents,” he pointed out:

(PUNE, India.) #Coronavirus Report: An Indian man who helped test a #COVID19 jab based on AstraZeneca’s candidate vaccine has filed suit, claiming that he suffered extreme side effects during his participation in the trial #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealthDesk – Nov.29: The plaintiff, identified in media reports as a 40-year-old man from Chennai, is suing the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) for Rs 5 crore ($676,000 USD). The individual alleges that he suffered serious neurological damage after taking part in the phase three trial of Covishield, the SII’s version of the Covid-19 jab being developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The man was purportedly told that the vaccine was safe and chose to participate in the program in “the spirit of public service.” …..The lawsuit also demands that SII, AstraZeneca and the Oxford Vaccine Group immediately halt vaccine trials, in which some 1,600 volunteers are currently enrolled:

‘More information needed’: WHO says it needs more than just press release to assess AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine

Ten days after receiving the shot, the man complained of a pounding headache and experienced vomiting, his wife told local media. He was bedridden and acting abnormally before being transferred to the emergency ward of the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital. A review by the hospital concluded that the medical problems were not linked to the vaccine, and a medical official cited by Indian media claimed that the patient was “now alright” and had not incurred any expenses stemming from the health episode: The man’s discharge summary said he requested to leave the hospital and was recovering from “acute encephalopathy”. He also suffered from deficiencies of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D, and was suspected of having a “connective tissue disorder.”………………..However, the man’s wife insists that he has not fully recovered and is unable to work as before:

In September, SII briefly paused its clinical trials of Covishield after a recipient of the AstraZeneca jab showed adverse symptoms:

India has faced criticism for not being more transparent about its Covid-19 vaccine trials. According to Science Magazine, SII is not using the same phase three testing protocol implemented by AstraZeneca, and has also declined to make its guidelines public.

Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm issued a statement following the update, calling it a sad development, but not surprising: ” For weeks we have been sounding the alarm about the dramatic growth in COVID-19 cases. We know that more cases leads to more hospitalizations and deaths, and today’s news reinforces that tragic pattern,” she said: Malcolm says every public activity is now more risky than it was even a few weeks ago, so the best way to slow the spread is to stay home: ” This is painful and frustrating, but every day we get closer to having safe and effective vaccines that should help resolve this crisis. We anxiously await that day, and until then we all must do our part to ensure that all of our loved ones, friends and neighbors can celebrate those days with us,” she said.

#COVID19 Additionl Data:

Total cases in the state is now at 295,001. Nearly 22,000 cases have been found amongst health care workers; 244,982 people who have contracted the virus no longer need to quarantine: The state’s health system continues to strain with more COVID-19 patients being admitted for treatment.

According to MDH data as recent as Nov. 24, there are 387 patients with the virus needing ICU beds and an additional 1,454 patients needing non-ICU beds. That’s a total of 1,812 patients currently needing treatment for the virus in the state. Both ICU and non-ICU bed use for COVID-19 patients continues to reach levels not seen before in the state, and have increased since mid-September. There were about 271 patients being treated for COVID-19 on Sept. 15:

As for testing, over 55,000 tests were completed on Wednesday: A total of 2.4 million people have been tested in the state so far:
