EGYPT: ‘ Egyptians including Soldiers Killed in Islamic Attack on Sinai Checkpoints ‘

#AceNewsReport – EGYPT:July.01: At least 50 Egyptians, including soldiers, were killed after an Islamic State affiliate launched simultaneous attacks on army checkpoints in the Sinai Peninsula, officials said. It comes two days after Egypt’s top prosecutor was assassinated.

The identities of those killed were not immediately clear, Reuters reported. Sources earlier said there were soldiers among the dead. The army also said that troops have been killed.

The assaults took place just south of the town of Sheikh Zuweid and targeted at least six military checkpoints, officials told AP. Two of the checkpoints were completely destroyed.

The militants took soldiers captive and seized weapons and several armored vehicles, the officials added, stating that the attackers used mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir, put the number of killed soldiers at 10, and said that fighting was still under way between armed forces and militants.

Samir’s statement, posted on his official Facebook page, said that about 70 militants attacked five checkpoints in northern Sinai, and that Egyptian troops killed 22 of them. He said soldiers destroyed three all-terrain vehicles fitted with anti-aircraft guns.

AFGHANISTAN: AMERICANS OUT & TALIBAN IN AS AFGHAN FORCES TAKE OVER SECURITY ON NEW YEARS DAY ‘

#AceNewsServices – EditorsPost:Dec.31: The smoke from mortar and rocket attacks rises from the mountains of Dangam in the remote eastern border region of Afghanistan as Taliban insurgents battle government forces in a bid to establish a permanent presence now that the American soldiers who led the fight here for more than a decade have left officials reported to AP.

' Taliban move into Dangam Mountains as American Forces leave Country '

‘ Taliban move into Dangam Mountains as American Forces leave Country ‘

Heavy fighting has been raging for almost three weeks, with wave after wave of Taliban militants assaulting this picturesque but poverty-stricken district of Kunar province just four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the border with Pakistan, officials and residents said.

The U.S.-led international effort to rid Afghanistan of the Taliban officially shifts from a combat to a training band support mission Wednesday, with Afghan forces assuming full responsibility for security nationwide on New Year’s Day. A residual force of 10,800 Americans and almost 3,000 NATO soldiers will remain, under the banner of a new mission called Resolute Support.

Over the last 18 months, U.S. and NATO forces have been closing their bases across the country, taking their battlefield prowess, air support and medical evacuation assets with them.

The war is meanwhile creeping into urban and residential areas, putting ordinary people at greater risk. Civilian casualties look set to hit 10,000 in 2014, the highest yearly total of dead and wounded since the U.N. began keeping records in 2008. More than 75 percent of the deaths and injuries are caused by Taliban attacks, according to the U.N.

There are few places where Afghan forces have been tested as ferociously as in Dangam, a forested valley where life has changed little for centuries.

The fighting began when local residents decided they had had enough of the Taliban, who had set up a “shadow” administration and were attempting to take control of the valley, according to Gen. Mohammad Zaman Waziri, Afghan army corps commander for eastern Afghanistan.

The Afghan army came to help, he said, and fighting has been going on ever since.

‘ ISLAMIC STATE RECRUITING HEARTS & MINDS OF CHILDREN TO BECOME SOLDIERS ‘

#AceNewsServices – LEBANON – Nov.26 – According to multiple reports, the Islamic State (ISIS) has hit a new low. While ISIS is not the first terrorist group to recruit and deploy child soldiers, one official told the Associated Press that the Islamic State’s veracity and boldness sets them apart.

‘ ISLAMIC STATE RECRUITING HEARTS & MINDS OF CHILDREN TO BECOME SOLDIERS ‘

“ISIS seems to be quite transparent and vocal about their intention and their practice of recruiting children,” UNICEF’s regional child protection adviser for the Middle East and North Africa, Laurent Chapuis, told the AP.

In a report earlier this month, an Islamic State fighter in Syria confirmed Chapuis’ observance to NBC News.

“We should start to train them from now because they will complete what we started: the expansion of the Islamic caliphate,” said Abu Dujana.

The Islamic State’s recruitment of child-soldiers comes as no surprise to Baptist Global Response (BGR), says Jeff Palmer. However, he hopes their ministry to Iraq and Syrian refugees can help prevent the exploitation.

“If we can keep them fed, if we can keep them in safe places, if we can start to find some jobs, and…we can provide some educational opportunities, we’re thinking that surely helps,” Palmer says.

A few days ago, ISIS released videos and pictures of child soldiers supposedly recruited from Kazakhstan.

“This is a strategy to ‘win over’ the hearts and mind’s of the children and indoctrinate them for future ‘muhajadeen,’” explains Palmer.

He says BGR employs a different strategy to “win over” the hearts of refugee families for Christ: compassion.

The ISIS crisis continually puts families in an extremely difficult position.

‘ PAKISTANI MAN UNLAWFUL DETAINED & TORTURED CAN SUE UK GOVERNMENT ‘

AceWorldNews – Nov.18 – A Pakistani man can sue the UK government over claims he was unlawfully detained and tortured by British soldiers in Iraq, the High Court has ruled the BBC reported.

' Yunus Rahmatullah '

‘ Yunus Rahmatullah ‘

According to Reprieve: Yunus Rahmatullah was captured in 2004, then sent from British to US custody and held for 10 years without charge.

The UK knew he may face unlawful detention and torture, lawyers said.

The Ministry of Defence said it should not face UK courts as the alleged behaviour was also conducted by the US.

The MoD also said it should have either state immunity or that the courts do not have jurisdiction over the acts of a foreign state, the US in this case.

Sapna Malik – who represents Mr Rahmatullah – said: “It is now high time for the British government to abandon its attempts to evade judicial scrutiny of its conduct in operations involving the US in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

‘ OBAMA SAYS HE WOULD ORDER BOOTS ON THE GROUND IF ISLAMIC STATE GOT NUCLEAR WEAPONS ‘

#AceNewsServices – WASHINGTON – Nov.18 – US President Barack Obama has, for the first time, admitted he would deploy US ground troops to Syria and Iraq to fight Islamic State – that is, if the extremist group obtained a nuclear weapon.

'Obama: I will send US troops to fight ISIS if they get nukes '

‘Obama: I will send US troops to fight ISIS if they get nukes ‘

“If we discovered that [Islamic State] had gotten possession of a nuclear weapon, and we had to run an operation to get it out of their hands, then, yes,” Obama told reporters at a news conference in Brisbane, Australia, on Sunday.

I would order it.”

Since Operation Inherent Resolve – or US-led airstrikes against Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) – began in August, President Obama has maintained that he would not send a large fighting force to Syria and Iraq to confront the jihadist network, which has come to control large areas of the two adjacent Middle Eastern nations.

However, Obama authorized the deployment of about 1,500 troops to Iraq earlier this month, doubling the American military presence in the country. Yet all soldiers sent to the region are there to “advise” Iraqi forces and not engage in combat, according to official explanations.

US officials said there is no evidence that Islamic State possesses or could easily attain a nuclear weapon.

‘IRAQI MILITARY ARE PLANNING 80,000 TROOPS ADVANCE TO LIBERATE MOSUL ‘

#AceNewsServices – MOSUL – Nov.18 – An Iraqi military operation to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) will be launched at the start of the new year, Iraq’s Nineveh governorate council has announced.

Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, council member Ghazwan Hamid said around 80,000 troops will be involved in the offensive, and that preparations for the operation were already under-way.

Iraqi soldiers who fled their posts in Mosul upon the city’s capture by ISIS back in June will be reintroduced into the Iraqi Army as part of the operation, Hamid said.

Members of the Nineveh police force will also be involved, as will fighters from the Kurdish Peshmerga, “who will be contributing to the operation by capturing the Nineveh plains area [which borders the northern and eastern regions of Mosul], and then surrounding the city from every direction.”

Training camps for the operation have now been set up in the Kurdistan region, Hamid said, adding that many of those currently being trained were previously members of the Iraqi armed forces.

“As for the rest, they comprise volunteers and members of Nineveh’s police force, all of whom need intense training in order to ready them for the upcoming battle,” he said.

Mosul is the Nineveh governorate’s capital city.

BAGHDAD: ‘ IRAQI ARMY RECAPTURES REFINERY IN BEIJI FROM ISLAMIC STATE ‘

#AceNewsServices – BAGHDAD – Nov.09 – Iraqi soldiers battling the Islamic State group recaptured the heart and outlying districts of the town of Beiji, home to the country’s largest oil refinery, state television and a provincial governor said Tuesday AP reported.

Retaking Beiji, 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of Baghdad, could allow Iraqi forces a base to attack neighboring Tikrit, taken by the extremists in their lightning advance this summer.

But troops backed by Shiite militias faced pockets of stiff resistance around Beiji, hindering their advance.

The top army commander in Beiji, General Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, was quoted by state television as saying that troops had recaptured the city’s local government and police headquarters.

The town is home to the country’s largest oil refinery. Retaking Beiji could allow Iraqi forces to use it as a base to attack neighbouring Tikrit, which was taken by the extremists this summer.

It’s also a morale boost for Iraq’s security forces.
